Dragon's Milk

Dragon's blood resin and honeyed vanilla.

Okay, after an embarrassing absence, I'm back to fulfill my obligations as a BPALer.

in the bottle: I haven't researched to see what Dragon's Blood is, but I've learned to associate it with a strangely mellow/spicy/sweet scent that resides somewhere near the intersection of amber, cinnamon and almond -- at least to my nose. This is that, with a kind of creamy, smooth undertone.

on wet: Exactly the same as in the bottle.

drydown: The sweetish component (almond-y) and the creamy component have come to the fore. I get the amber-like scent too, which (as amber always does) reminds me of soap.

one hour later: This has mellowed out to a lighter version of what I smelled in the bottle, which is interesting to me; this is the first BPAL fragrance I've smelled that is, on me, exactly what it seems to be initially -- all the rest change, many dramatically.

end of day: Light, sweetish, mellow, creamy, hint of spice.

compared to official description: The creamy/smooth component has to be the vanilla, but it doesn't stand out to me as vanilla; perhaps that has something to do with the "honeyed" component. [Edit: In the end the vanilla did stand out. I'm not sure this is a vanilla that I'm fond of -- a little too ... I don't know. I can't really describe what it it that I don't like about it.]

notes: I would call this scent "not me", or at least atypical of scents I like, but there's something about it that appeals to me. Jury's out. I'll have to try it again later.

I want to buy or try

Updated 5/19/2010   So far I know I want a bottle (or more) of Snake Oil, a partial or bottle of Josie, a partial or imp of Sol Invictus. And so many things I still have to try!   Want to TRY: -Inez "Golden amber, vanilla musk, myrrh, cedar, carnation, and red sandalwood."   -Bordello "Bawdy plum with amaretto, burgundy wine and black currant."   -Bakeneko "Warm amber musk, Satsuma tangerine, black tea leaf, cardamom, cherry blossom and cinnamon."   -Vechernyaya "Three white musks with poppy and patchouli."   -Event Horizon "A disconcerting scent, heavy and oppressive, through which no light, no matter, and no spirit can escape. Black opium, labdanum, opoponax, black orchid, and benzoin."   -Shattered, Bewitching Brews A blend of white champagne notes, grapefruit, lotus, slivered mint and crystalline aquatic blooms   - Thalia, Excolo Plumeria, pear and white champagne.   - How Doth the Little Crocodile?, Moral Hymnody and Nonsense Chocolate peppermint, mint-soaked vanilla, pistachio, oakmoss, and green cedar. - out of pure curiosity   -Sacred Whore of Babylon "A sweet floral over vanilla and cinnamon."   -Hunger Ars Amatoria Black narcissus, orange blossoms, and vanilla.   -Ozymandias - often compared with Chanel No. 5 (not that I like Chanel No. 5)   -Rapture? Moroccan rose, Sumatran rose, mandarin, Egyptian myrrh, night-blooming jasmine, bergamot and neroli thrust into Arabian musk.   -Pepper Wild English roses, French gardenia, vanilla, honey, golden ginger, blood orange, pine resin, pink pepper, crushed berries, tuberose, bergamot, and geranium.   -Smut (second try? I don't think I skin tested)   - Euphrosyne Gardenia, jasmine, tea rose, and vanilla

Good Judy: Bread Pudding

Bread Pudding Category: Mary Jo's Bakery Quantity: sample   Description: BREAD PUDDING Warm bread soaked in milk and eggs and spices. Baked golden bubbly and served drenched in an ooey-gooey vanilla rum sauce. Delightfully rich and satisfying!   Review:   In the bottle: I smell a mix of bread, eggs, spices (especially cinnamon, yum!), vanilla, and a bit of rum.   Wet: This really smells like french toast (or “pain doré/pain perdu”; as usual, please forgive my french) with spices, and some sort of a rich vanilla sauce, with a strong sugar undernote.   Dry: Yeah, old bread or old cake soaked in a preparation of milk and eggs to remove dryness. It took some time, but I finally got some of the rum back. And as usual, the perfume turned sugary-sweet on me.   Verdict: Not bad; but maybe a little bit too “french toast”, the ressemblance is just too obvious for me. Other than that, it’s lovely, and so yummy that it makes me want to bake.

Wishes

I wish for the health and happiness of my family. I wish to be a more mindful, attentive person. I wish to be better at prioritizing so I accomplish more and stress my husband less. I wish to be more generous, to be less attached to unimportant things, to not waste energy on what doesn't deserve it. I wish to make the most of my life. Even as I am wishing these things for myself, I know I'm incredibly blessed with many joys, and I wish these joys and more on everyone.   I wish to get my packing for the trip done soon. I wish to write more and better poetry that sings of the world. I wish to do well on the LSAT. I wish for consolation for the grieving. I wish upon a falling star. I wish on the first star I see at night. I wish on the stray eyelashes I find on my love's cheek. I wish on wishies.   I wish so much that "wish" now looks and sounds like a gibberish word. I wish for the fulfillment of wishes, through generosity and hard work.   And I wish everyone happy holidays!

I have a cold and despite all the conjestion my nose is hyper sensitive right now. I walk in to the bathroom and I can smell all the soaps, shampoos, conditioner, lotions, etc. Everything seems sooo strong right now.

Me and Dragon's Blood do not like each other. I seem to be allergic, as in nasal allergies, luckily no skin reaction. It smells sharp and strong to me, it eventually comes out even if it was a back note and becomes strong. Although my skin likes to pull out a lot of notes one at a time (apparently), humph.

To Order:

Spellbound - Ars Amatoria - Perfectly enchanting! An irresistibly sexual, utterly rapturous blend of three roses, radiant amber, and sensual red musk.   Queen Mab - Excolo - Warrior, Trickster and Goddess of Magic and Poets, she is one of the Tuatha De Danaan and the Queen of the Faeries. A very complex scent, both shadowy and fierce: black orchid, sandalwood, night-blooming jasmine, osmanthus, Somalian rose, and Chinese musk.   Perversion - Ars Amatoria - The perfect scent to wear to your next bondage ball, dungeon adventure or sojourn to your favorite pleasure dome. Smoky rum and black tobacco with a whisper of steamy leather with a splash of crystalline chardonnay, layered over a sensual, sweet, and deceptively magnetic base of ton   Swank - Bewitching Brews - Simply cool, the essence of Lounge: the scent of a crisp pomegranate martini.   #20 Love Oil - Bewitching Brews - A potent, enticing love formula, favored among Louisiana courtesans.   Scherezade - Bewitching Brews - A master storyteller who possessed unfailing courage and compassion, a sharp, quick wit, and a true understanding of human nature. Saffron and Middle Eastern spices swirled through sensual red musk.   Persephone - Excolo - Beautiful, radiant daughter of Demeter... her loveliness was so exquisite that even Hell itself could not resist her. Pomegranate and rose.   Voodoo - Bewitching Brews - A midnight scent, evoking images of flickering golden firelight reflecting off the sheen of glistening skin and the jerking shadows of bodies suffused with spiritual ecstasy. A deep, powerful, resonant blend of myrrh, patchouli, vetiver, lime, vanilla, pine, almond and clove.   List not done, review Conjurer's Bag.

Quick reviews

Gacela.....almost works, clove is really iffy on me and it doesn't quite work for me here. It comes off a little dusty or something.   Faunalia.....Eek....this reminds me of Golden Priapus, a lot, which I hated, except this isn't quite as bad as that was. Still, this isn't for me.   Men Loved Darkness......Another miss.....a lot of times clove and patchouli combine and turn really sour on me, which is what happened here, just like in Smiling Spider. They amp each other up until it's all sour clove and patchouli.   Season Of Ghosts.....Very odd for a citrus scent....actually I don't even get much citrus. I recognize the rose geranium from On Darkness, and overall this scent turns weird and soapy on me. Did not like at all!   Joulumuori......Big winner for me! I love this scent, and I had a feeling I should have gone straight for a bottle. Well, I was right. For all the foody notes, this is a wearable scent that isn't as foody as I thought it would be. The wood smoke or hearth note is very, very much like Djinn, my favorite GC scent. But it has the fabulous cheery spices mixed in, and I just love this. Kind of reminds me of the best parts of Djinn and Jolasveinar, with none of the snow or pine notes from Jolasveinar. Just great.   Pink Snowballs......Not a fan.....I understand the comparisons to Snow White, but Pink Snowballs is more perfumey, fluffy, almost powdery, and not cold at all. Very commercial smelling to me. It's not terrible, but not what I was hoping for.   Snowball Fracas.....Familiar snow note, but I do smell the soil from Graveyard Dirt underneath it. After a while more moss comes out. It's a good scent because I like these things, but doesn't stand out enough for me to want more. The soil note can be a little yucky but mixed with the snow notes, it's not bad.   First Soft Snowfall......At first reminds me of Death Of The Grave Digger, a lot. Then as it dries, it becomes more floral, and I find myself thinking of Archangel Winter. Again, not a bad scent, but not quite as good as Death Of The Grave Digger.

Wow

I am all moved in now at my new apartment. I like it a lot more than the old one! I'm still unpacking and arranging, which will probably take me a while, but I have 5 closets, which is wonderful. I'm looking forward to a couple of relaxing days just getting settled in.

Trick Or Treat

Limited Edition -- Halloween 2009   Not *exactly* like candy corn to my nose...more like a sugary vanilla. Someone who described it as Karo or corn syrup hit it pretty much on the nose.

Suck It

Limited Edition -- Halloween 2009   Pretty much just black cherry candy, here. And that's while it lasts, which isn't terribly long...then it just dissipates to nothing.

Pumpkin III 2009

Limited Edition -- Halloween 2009   A wee, meek whiff of butter, and then spicy leaves like whoa. Lots of tomato leaf and rosemary to this one, with maybe a touch of mint. Actually, now that I think of it, this is a lot like going down to the garden to get your pumpkin -- there are lots of stems and vines and leaves covered with that strange, horny sort of velvet that tomato leaves have, all dotted with this morning's rain. Definitely a fun change.

Pumpkin II 2009

Limited Edition -- Halloween 2009   When it's initially applied, there's a warm, slick buttery smell to it. This quickly wears off, as the rose and sandalwood come out and assert themselves. It becomes a beautifully-balanced rose-and-spice/wood/incense sort of scent. Yep, I'm going to totally kick myself for not going ahead and getting a bottle...this is what Rose Cross *should* have been on me. Really, really nice.

Pumpkin I 2009

Limited Edition -- Halloween 2009   A very yummy Pumpkin, indeed! This is the first time I really came up against the 'buttery' note that a lot of people talk about. But as soon as the cap is off and it's being applied, I get a hearty blast of freshly-melted butter. It quickly ebbs a bit so that it just smells like lightly-salted buttered popcorn...and then the other notes come out to play. I like honey, but often it can smell just a little too musky or tart; here, the pumpkin mellows it out enough so that it gives a nice, mellow body to the pumpkin and takes away a light sweetness from its fellow component. I liked it so much, I made sure to buy a bottle.

Pomona

Limited Edition -- Halloween 2009   Apple juice/cider, mixed with toasted nuts, with maybe a faint whiff of blossoms here and there. It doesn't really agree with me, for some reason...the apple note is pleasant enough, but the combination of notes just...isn't jivin' with me.

Mircalla, Countess Karstein

Limited Edition -- Halloween 2009 -- The Literary Vampires   At first whiff, it is a wet, resinous patchouli salted with clove and dragon's blood. There is even a slight sort of currant smell, that makes it almost pulpy for a second. Very lovely. This wears off in a flash, and is strong on clove. As dominant as this combination of scents sounds, it really doesn't express itself very much on me...it's more of an intimate scent to be experienced in furtive huffs. This is another one that I will probably end up trading away eventually, albeit very reluctantly.

Lambs-Wool

Limited Editions -- Halloween 2009   I can see why this one was so popular! Delicious, warm, spicy apple cider...if I detect the milk note, it's as a creamy/buttery sort of edge to the scent. Super-nice. It's not an overpowering scent, but it will last much of the day on me and give me pleasant little wafts throughout. I think I like this one better than Fearful Pleasure. I of course bought a bottle!

Feeding The Dead

Limited Editions -- Halloween 2009   Primarily, this one is like a spiced bread or cake to me. The beer gives it a sweet sort of nutty aroma when I inhale *super* deeply. Alas, I really wanted to like this one, and it's not a *bad* scent, but it just can't hold a candle to my favorites from last year, Huesos De Santos and John Barleycorn.

Cristina

Limited Editions -- Halloween 2009 -- The Literary Vampires   I pretty much just get roasted chestnuts off of this. It's a rich, almost buttery sort of smell -- it's like going over to someone's house after they've been baking all day...all the smells of the various breads, cookies and such mingle together, into one warm, delicious celebration of carbohydrates. It's a very, very intriguing scent, though in my case I'm pretty sure I don't need a bottle of it. If I do ever swap my imp of this, it will be with a bittersweet and reluctant feeling.
