Fairytale Art Swap Q's

What is your favorite fairy tale, persona, or motif? What imagery does the story/person/thing evoke for you? Do you like or hate how it was handled by a movie or show? How about illustrations and pictures on the subject? Any you are particularly in love with? I’ve got to think about this one.   How are you with ethically sourced (read: found in the woods on the ground, on the beach, etc.) formerly living bits? Examples: feathers, butterfly wings, fossilized teeth/bone, clean-but-not fossilized bone. All good.   Would you rather have half of something that was super fabulous in conception, but ultimately too much to pull off completely in the time frame(although still fully functional? Why not – I also wouldn’t mind if you needed extra time to pull off and just sent me a hint of what’s to come (if that would be fine with the swap leaders).   Is there something specifically in fairytales you do NOT want to see? Can’t think of anything at the moment – will let you know if something comes up.   And would you be limited to the idea of 'fairytales' or would you be happy with crossing over into 'origin stories' or 'mythology'? I love mythology especially Greek and Egyptian.   If you've mentioned that purple is a favorite color, which shades do you prefer? Darker, royal shades or ones that tend to lean more red than blue. Lighter shades are also fine but not the biggest fan of pastels.   If in your questionnaire you talked about different styles or listed a number of favorite stories, now that we've been talking about the subject, has anything sort of popped into your head as a "you know I REALLY wish my artist would do something with X story/theme/subject/style." ? Not really.   How do you feeel about nudity? No problems with it.   How do you feel about more practical crafty kinds of things, rather than more traditional "art"? Like would you be ok with a decorated box or bag, or something like that? If I could use the art that you make me, that would be a bonus. I would love to get a bag for my gaming dice.   Would you like a retold fairy tale (in poem or story form) written by your artist as part of your swap? That would be really neat.   How do you feel about receiving a recipe of some sort based off your faerie tale of choice? Or say a meal plan you could do for a day or like a dinner party or something? This sounds so awesome.   How do you feel about anime in general? I love anime – go to conventions and cosplay too. I’m going as Sailor Moon for this year’s Sakura Con.   What kind of bodyshapes appeal to you in pin up art, male and female? I enjoy pin up – curves are always nice. Don’t really pay attention or look at a lot of male models, so just female for me.   How do you feel about excerpts in your art? Are words okay, or would you rather leave language to the imagination? If excerpts are needed, go ahead. If not tastefully, excerpts can really bring a piece together.   What is your favorite grimms tale?   Would you mind getting extra non fairytale goodies along with the required item? Like teas, bacon caramels, soap? Extras of any kind are always welcomed (though I’m not sure about bacon caramels).   Would you enjoy a wearable item? something hand knit by chance? Love knitted stuff.   What kinds of things do you like to eat? Snack wise, donuts and Asian sweets/cookies.   If you were my patron, is there are particular animal (or animals, or animal tale) from a faerie tale/myth/modern tale/legend that you love or emphasize with?   Do you have a particular house color palette? Not really; I’m also hoping to move out sometime in April or around that time and I don’t have any particular color palette in mind either.   If you were my patron, what would you be hoping for in miniature Miniatures are super fun! I'm up for anything, but dragons especially

A note on swap/sales package goodies.

Hi there! To get here, you likely clicked a link my wishlist or swap thread, thanks for being so thoughtful as to look around for information about things like this!   While I greatly appreciate freebies and extras in swap and sales packages, I needed to make a note regarding allergies and such.   We have a few food-related allergies in the house that are, honestly, difficult to avoid. The big one is soy - which rules out a lot of strange stuff. I have a (seizure-related) sensitivity to artificial sweeteners and a sulfa-related allergy to sodium saccharine. Household allergies to: beets, tomatoes, eggplant, strawberries, bananas.   I do enjoy tea, coffee, spices and the like provided they are soy and artificial sweetener free (you'd be surprised at what isn't!)   Here are some odd ones that I never knew I'd need to call out
Latex allergy - so no cute Band-Aids or other skin-touching-sticky things, please
Polyester allergy
Many candles are soy-wax based these days, if you aren't sure please hang onto it for your next package   There is also a household sensitivity (asthma-related) to most synthetic fragrance. I usually just avoid non-BPAL scents because so many of them also use synthetic carriers or soy-based products, which we can't have in the house. Other than BPAL, our house is mostly unscented - we don't use scented bath, beauty, laundry or household products. No incense, please, asthmatic child in the home (and we run HePA filters with UV-C sanitizing lights all the time, so the incense would be gone pretty quickly if we did try.)   I have a post up in the likes/dislikes thread that is linked in my wishlist for BPAL-related death-notes and other assorted scent-based information. This is linked in my wishlist.   Of course, if you include things that I can't have, I'll just pass them on to someone at the office (or in the case of scents and such, offer them up for swapping, frimp them to my next swapper) but I thought I'd try and make sure that everything you pay to ship is loved where it arrives.   Thanks so much for being so generous, everyone!

Art Swap Questions

What is your favorite fairy tale, persona, or motif? What imagery does the story/person/thing evoke for you? Do you like or hate how it was handled by a movie or show? How about illustrations and pictures on the subject? Any you are particularly in love with?   I think I answered this at length in the thread.   How are you with ethically sourced (read: found in the woods on the ground, on the beach, etc.) formerly living bits? Examples: feathers, butterfly wings, fossilized teeth/bone, clean-but-not fossilized bone.   Go for it!   Would you rather have half of something that was super fabulous in conception, but ultimately too much to pull off completely in the time frame(although still fully functional?   Yes. Do what you want and then send it my way.   Is there something specifically in fairytales you do NOT want to see?   Really, really graphic violence and incest.   And would you be limited to the idea of 'fairytales' or would you be happy with crossing over into 'origin stories' or 'mythology'?   DO IT.   If you've mentioned that purple is a favorite color, which shades do you prefer?   Jewel tones -- so vivid but darkish.   If in your questionnaire you talked about different styles or listed a number of favorite stories, now that we've been talking about the subject, has anything sort of popped into your head as a "you know I REALLY wish my artist would do something with X story/theme/subject/style." ?   I do like Art Deco and Art Nouveau, but I would also really like whatever style you are most comfortable with. I'd rather have a piece you are comfortable and confident making than something you bent over backwards to make in a style I like, but weren't as comfortable in. I'd like to see your expertise.   How do you feeel about nudity?   I'm not opposed.   How do you feel about more practical crafty kinds of things, rather than more traditional "art"? Like would you be ok with a decorated box or bag, or something like that?   I would love it.   Would you like a retold fairy tale (in poem or story form) written by your artist as part of your swap?   Sure!   How do you feel about receiving a recipe of some sort based off your faerie tale of choice?   Yessssss.   Or say a meal plan you could do for a day or like a dinner party or something?   Okay, yes, this would be fun.   How do you feel about anime in general?   I'm down with it.   What kind of bodyshapes appeal to you in pin up art, male and female?   Curvy, but realistic lady shapes.   How do you feel about excerpts in your art? Are words okay, or would you rather leave language to the imagination?   You do what you want.   What is your favorite grimms tale?   This is haaaaaaaard. Seriously, I don't even know.   New As of 10 Feb: Would you mind getting extra non fairytale goodies along with the required item? Like teas, bacon caramels, soap?   Sure!   Would you enjoy a wearable item? something hand knit by chance?   I'd love it. The asker of this question sent me a pair of wrist warmers last year and I wear them ALL THE TIME. She's a fantastic knitter.   New As of 11 Feb: What kinds of things do you like to eat?   All kinds of things. We're serious foodies. Oh, except not mushroom-truffles. Those kind of taste like feet to me. No matter how I have 'em, then end up just being gross. And I love mushrooms. But bllerrrrgh.   If you were my patron, is there are particular animal (or animals, or animal tale) from a faerie tale/myth/modern tale/legend that you love or emphasize with?   No.   New As of 12 Feb:   Do you have a particular house color palette? I think I already said this -- we have a very nice neutral light taupe wall color. I tend to decorate in browns and jewel tones.   New As of 13 Feb: If you were my patron, what would you be hoping for in miniature?   Whatever you are planning on sending me.

Investigating Oakmoss

A question I asked today:     In testing my imps, I've been trying to give priority to the ones with oakmoss, although after a recent cold, I got sidetracked onto eucalyptus (resulting in two bottles of Ultraviolet and an upcoming purchase of Schrodinger's Cat and Jabberwocky). This may not be the best sense-of-smell day for me, since my allergies are breaking through my antihistamine a bit, but I can't help wanting to experiment anyway. The stash-tracker doesn't work well for the length of comments I sometimes want to make, or for noting the changes over time or layering/mixing effects, so I've decided to track all that here.   This morning, I'm trying Two Monsters, and it's falling kind of flat. From my stash notes:     I'm wondering if I did Two Monsters a disservice by layering it over whatever remains of yesterday's Schrodinger's Jabberwocky. I'll have to try this one again when my nose is clear and skin is clean.   Schrodinger's Jabberwocky, on the other hand, was amazing, and I kept getting lovely whiffs of it even in my sleep several hours later -- not sure how much of that was the Schrodinger's Cat, which seemed to vanish in 10-20 minutes, but I'm going to be getting bottles of both in case the Jabberwocky delightfulness was a byproduct of the layering. The combo even went amazingly well with a bedtime application of Oneroi.

Art Swap: FAIRY TALES!

Hi! I ramble, so I will put it here and not take up tons of thread space.     Ethically sourced creature things?   I'm averse to fur, and dead bugs would make me sad. Someone just made a very valid point that their pets might eat it, so no thank you on bones as well. feathers and plants are perfectly fine, though. Especially plants.   Who do I identify with?   Probably, the Little Mermaid and Rapunzel(haven't seen Tangled, though)? But, partly because of the trauma of sacrificing your hair. I look up to most of the heroines in my favorite stories, I guess, wanting to have characteristics like them, but not necessarily identifying with them as such.   I do prefer happy endings. But a dark twist on anything(so long as the baddie still gets theirs) is perfectly acceptable. And a dark aesthetic is lovely. Rat's Magic was one of my very favorite books as a small child.   The only time I was disappointed by an animal to human ending was in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, when Beast turned into Michael Bolton. As a kid, in the theatre, I remember there being an audible audience reaction of "AUGH!?!" Which was awesome.   I prefer humanoid fairytales, but I do still love animal stories(hedgehogs in a forest, etc.). Off the top of my head, I like the story where the monkey bets the elephant that he is stronger, and then bets the rhino the same, and then has them tug of war--because they are out of sight of each other. And, when they are both exhausted, he steals their bananas. Either it's an Aesop's Fable, or my imagination is even better than I give it credit for.   I'm currently watching both Grimm and Once Upon a Time, and liking them. Haven't seen Lost Girl, but I kind of want to now. As far as folklore goes, I like vampire, ghosts, and any kind of magical plant.   I'm not sure but I think I didn't include Princess Kaguya, or the Chinese version of Cinderella in my list of fairy tales. Of course, I probably didn't include a lot of them, but yeah. Like Sinbad and the valley of the shiny things(voyage #2, according to wiki), and also just for humor, there is a story of three brothers and a table that sets itself, a super strong donkey, and a club that smacks people. And the one with the three dogs, and the man who goes underwater and has to choose his true love from amongst her six identical sisters, and the one wit hteh super glue swan.... You know, I just like fairy tales, so you should pick something *you* will enjoy, and that will be awesome. And I should stop now.   Also, vaguely related, *HUGE* King's Quest fan. Wacky/unusual interpretations of fairy tales heartily welcomed.   So, I now have the phrase, 'kleptomaniacal lawn gnome' stuck in my head, so I will sign off.   Thank you for reading

Body Makover

Body Makeover – Day 1 Monday January 30, 2012   Preparing and making the food for my diet is a pain in the ass!! It took me an hour last night to make food for today (but I also prepared Rexford’s bag for school – and for the rest of the week, and made regular dinner for everyone.) The BIG test is going to be trying to figure out how to prepare my food for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights because of my second job. I know I’ll have to wake up earlier in the morning, probably around 6 which will be tough, but I know I can do this!!   I tried eating my breakfast at home at 7am this morning but no dice, it’s just too early for my body, considering I usually skip breakfast and eat lunch at 11am! So I waited till I got to work and I ate it at my desk, it was ok. The first few bites were tough but halfway through I was starting to enjoy it … kind of.   Breakfast:   3 oatmeal and egg white pancakes (with cinnamon and vanilla) 2 table spoons chopped strawberries 1 cup black coffee It wasn’t the most appetizing breakfast but I must admit I feel good, nice and full! The diet also requires me to drink 100 oz of water a day. I’ll admit I am not a big water drinker at all, I really don’t enjoy it so rather than make myself sick by doing the 100oz right away, I’m just going to play it by ear and aim for 60oz a day and take it from there, if I can manage more great, if not it’s better than nothing right?   Ugh drinking the water is hard because it’s so cold in the office today! Brrrrr! I’m down almost 33oz and it’s only mid-morning. I can do this! And I have to pee every 5 seconds now!!   Taking pictures, weighing and measuring myself was a real eye-opener for me last night. The measuring and weighing was no problem, seeing the pictures was very difficult! I told DH my fears last night. It boils down to this statement:   “What happens if I get to my goal weight and stick to the diet and exercise plan but I look in the mirror and I still don’t like what I see?”   This is my biggest fear.   Part of the problem is I have one leg longer than the other so when I stand my one hip is lower than the other and this makes a crease down my back/side/hip, it looks terrible. I’m hoping that when I loose some of the fat around my thigh/hip area and when I tone the muscles it’ll make it less noticeable.   Snack time! 11.30am couldn’t have come soon enough I was hungry! Here is what I had:   Mid-morning Snack:   2oz Grilled Chicken Breast Some Grilled Snow peas ½ cup strawberries   After I ate this I was still STARVING so I consulting my food plan and read that for my plan I can have unlimited salad/veggies so I went and got a salad from Publix.   Lettuce, tom, peppers, cucumber, carrots and spring onion. I topped it with Red Wine Vinaigrette, ground pepper and salt free spicy seasoning. It hit the spot. I am now full!   But I was a little too enthusiastic with the seasoning and it was very very spicy! When I got back to my desk I drank some water and had a piece of gum. I’m not sure if gum is allowed but it doesn’t have sugar so I think it’s okay.   The mid-morning snack is hard for me because I generally have my HUGE lunch meal at 11am so I have to train my body to have smaller portions earlier on and then a slightly larger lunch at around 2pm. The salad really helped and I don’t feel guilty because it’s “free food”. I am craving something sweet, will have to see what desserts I’m allowed.   EPIC FAIL at lunch time. I had made tuna, onion and oat cakes and I thought I was going to throw up. I managed 1 ½ of them with the carrots and tomato but I couldn’t eat anymore. Not a good start considering it’s my first day. I’m trying to remind myself that it’ll take a couple of days to get acclimated and I’ve already learnt that I can have endless amounts of vegetables (like lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms ect.) to fill me up as tuna is not a good idea for me   After you finish a small meal even though you’re body isn’t starving or deprived of food, it’s used to eating more so it sends a message to your brain reminding or rather telling you to eat more, the more you eat smaller meals the sooner your body will adjust!   I’m excited I did some research on the Diets forum pages and found a great dessert/evening snack recipe – Meringue Cookies (which I will be trying tonight) and a great breakfast or afternoon snack – Almond Rice Cupcakes (which I’ll make tonight for my snack tomorrow!)   I just had my afternoon snack which was really good!   Mid-afternoon Snack:   2oz Grilled Pork Steak ½ cup grilled snow peas and squash   I got home and making dinner was so-so, it was hard with the boys crawling/running around and Brice trying to do the taxes all at the same time.   Dinner: “Cottage Pie”   2oz Ground Beef with onions and mushrooms ½ cup “mashed” potato 1 cup peas and brussel sprouts   1 glass of ice water with lemon   It wasn’t a very nice meal unfortunately, very bland and when I added crushed garlic to the mash I used too much and it made it very sour/bitter. I found a recipe for home-made tomato sauce from the diet forum and will try and make that sometime to try and add some flavor and “wetness” I find a lot of the meals very dry.   After we bathed and put the boys to bed I cleaned the kitchen and got my food ready for tomorrow – took about 50min but I kept distracting myself trying to do too many things at once!   I made the meringue cookies too, they turned out okay. I used almond essence which I probably won’t again; it can also have a very odd taste. Next time I think some vanilla will be nicer. I want to try actual meringues this weekend maybe.     Body Makeover – Day 2 Tuesday January 31, 2012 Woke up at 6.30am this morning to pack lunches and make breakfast and coffee. I made Brice fried eggs on toast that he shared with Paxton. Made myself black coffee but only had 2 sips and forgot it on the counter.   Brought my breakfast to work, I still can’t stomach anything before 8:30am. Have a slight headache today but I’m sure it’s caused from all the withdrawals (sugar, salt, dairy, flour ect.) it’s not too bad, after my black coffee at work and water it’s eased considerably!   Breakfast:   2oz ground beef (from last night) 2oz scrambled egg whites ½ c mashed potato   I fried them all up with some pepper, parsley and garlic powder so it was like an egg skillet. It wasn’t bad. The first mouthful was very dry but I added some red wine vinaigrette and extra pepper and ate it with my coffee and it was better.   My snack time at 11am came quickly and it was delicious!   Mid-morning Snack:   2 ½oz (x3 slices) of low-sodium smoked Turkey 1 small tomato Half a grape fruit   Unlike yesterday, this filled me up nicely and when I had to eat lunch at 2pm I wasn’t starving. Lunch was okay, a bit bland, I still have to figure out how to make the food taste better. I really need to make some of the tomato sauce/ketcup or some kind of gravy. I also want to see about making a soup in the crockpot, think that would be really nice. Must peruse the diet forum cookbook sometime!   Lunch:   2-3oz grilled pork and chicken ½ cup rice 1 cup peas and brussel sprouts Small mixed salad (sprouts, lettuce, cucumber, peppers, carrots and spring onion)   Had a cup of tea mid-afternoon, because it’s still hard for me to stomach all the water I have to drink, it’s going well though, I’m almost done with my second bottle of water and if I can manage another one then that’ll almost be the full 100oz!   I’m a bit nervous about dinner tonight, fish …. Not sure how to cook it without batter.   Just came back from my mid-afternoon snack and all I can say is YUMMO!   Mid-afternoon Snack:   2 ½oz (x3 slices) of low-sodium smoked Turkey 1 small tomato 1 small sweet potato 3 baby carrots
