Love a Victoria's Secret fragrance? Looking for a BPAL cousin to it?
mamoyer replied to foundmyhappyplace's topic in Recommendations
Heavenly smells a lot like Haloes, IMHO. Heavenly: Top notes: quince, cardamon, wild ivy, mandarin. Middle notes: waterlily, white peony, freesia, iris, violet, poppy. Low notes: white musk, sandalwood, orchid vanilla Haloes: Oak, tonka, vanilla, white sandalwood, lily of the valley, white ginger, amber, and apricot. -
Hkhm's review says it better than I could have myself; that's exactly what I think of Old Moon. It is a gorgeous scent, very evocative, but unfortunately I don't think it will be used by me much--I don't often like to smell cold and pine-y, but when I do, The Shivering Boy is my scent of choice for that! I would LOVE to have a candle that smells like this, though! Maybe I'll keep it for room scenting....

I think I love you.

Absolutely gorgeous. It's all honey and chocolate over fruity florals for me. Very creamy and decadent. I wish Gluttony had been like this, instead of the plasticky mess it was on me! I actually tried it on on one hand and the original Honey Moon on the other, and initially there was no huge difference. On the drydown, Hony Mone actually had more staying power where Honey Moon fades to a really light floral. SUPER yum. I've also gotten so many compliments on it! Every time I wear it, people around me tell me how good I smell. I'm a huge fan. ETA: Still one of my new favorites! I even found a backup bottle to tuck away...I just hope that that will be enough for me!

It is EXACTLY like this on me. Powdered Red kool-aid. It almost feels like I'm SNORTING pixi stix, it's that sweet. It's enough to make me nauseated. Good thing I only got a half decant.

Black Lace smells just like you came back from work/classes, changed into fresh going-out clothes and put on sexy oriental perfume, spent the night in a smoky bar, got a few drinks splashed on you, and then had drunken sex with a guy wearing musky men's cologne before passing out on the bed. I like it.

I want a BPAL that smells like Bath & Body Works...

What about Vanilla Bean Noel? Sugar Skull doesn't do it for me, and neither do Gluttony or Cockaigne. BBW says: Vanilla Bean Noel-fragrance top notes: Caramel, Burnt Sugar; mid note: Vanilla; base notes: Tonka Bean, Musk -
Is that anything like, "kittens and THEE glitz" I say BEE-pal too. In fact, I kinda assumed everybody does. Well, I thought it was pretty simple but this was what I found at the beginning of this thread: And then thought that maybe I was the only one who saw "BPAL" and thought "Bee-Pal" instead of "Bee-Pee-Ay-Ell". :-P I'm a silly.

It'd probably be nicer if you wore something else. The Swan Maiden sounds perfect for a bride, though. If I'd had BPAL on my wedding day, I would have worn Snake Charmer for sure. I ended up being bridesmaid at a friend's wedding wearing that and got tons of comments! You know, I hadn't even thought of Snake Charmer. I've been trying to save my two partial imps for special occasions--I guess this would count!

A friend's wedding is this weekend, and I'm going to be a bridesmaid! I had given her a couple BPAL imps to try a couple months ago, and found that she liked white florals best. She also said that she needed a wedding day scent, so I got right to work. I d my Swan Maiden so much that I had someone pick up another bottle of it at Will Call to give to her. I gave it to her last Wednesday as a bachelorette present and she loves it! She's going to wear it at the wedding. Question: Would it be très gauche if I also wear Swan Maiden? If so, I'll wear The Unicorn or Día de los Muertos (it's a very autumnal wedding, with golden, red, and brown tones) instead.

In the bottle: Sharp peppermint! Clears my sinuses. On me: Definitely minty and actually kind of soft. Strangely enough, the first Lick It incarnation was the sweetest of the three to my nose. I only had a sniffie of Lick It Again, but both that and Lick It One More Time are sharper and less sweet to me. LIOMT, though, is definitely the softest of the three though. They all smell like candy cane to me! Drydown: Relatively faint now. I have LI and LIOMT about 6 inches apart on my arm for comparative purposes. LI has a sweeter drydown and LIOMT has a different kind of sugar in it, I think, because it's very faint now. I may swap this b/c I like LI 05 better, and the bottle I have of it serves me well. I will keep this for a while though to retest and see if I have a different chemistry day. I definitely love the smell! I just wish it would last longer.

Bottle: Smells like Tiramisu!!!! Seriously, yo. OR someone's breath after church when they've been drinking coffee and eating chocolate doughnuts. On me: I want to eat my arm. This smells SO GOOD. It's not really an espresso coffee. It's coffee coffee served with a chocolate dessert. Can't really smell the cinnamon or brown sugar. Drydown: O plastic! -wherefore dost thou bring ruin to EVERY foody scent on my skin? A minute later, I smell like a hot cocoa-scented scratch'n'sniff sticker, the kind I got around Christmastime on my worksheets in middle school. It's still good but...waahhh, that plastic smell haunts it. I'm hoping that it's a chemistry off-day and will try again later this week. If there's any change I'll update my review.

White gardenia, white iris, sandalwood, calla lily, French magnolia, muguet, jonquil, and orchid. There are so many white floral notes in Swan Maiden, I can't pick out any individual ones. But it is a GORGEOUS perfume that makes me feel sophisticated, pretty, and feminine when I wear it. I couldn't bear to be parted from mine, so I got another bottle of it to give to my friend who is getting married next weekend (I'm a bridesmaid, so it was a bachelorette party present). She only has a few imps I've given her, but she already knows she likes white florals best, so I ordered the bottle praying that SM would be good for her. It's totally her favorite now, and she says it's the perfect scent to wear on her wedding day. It's potent, so that a dot of it on my arm can still be smelled wafting about me hours later. This is good, b/c I have a feeling I'm going to want to wear this into my late 20's at least. Definitely one of my new favorites! EDIT: A few months later, the gardenia really sticks out the most for me. I still love this blend! It's so gorgeous. I had to get a backup bottle.

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

I've seen a lot of Snow White = Dana O'Shee, The Unicorn, or Szepasszony comparisons. I never thought of it before, but those 4 are all in my personal Top Ten list, so I decided to give layering a whirl. The Unicorn + Dana = Pretty close. Really light, but w/o that hint of "green" that's in SW. Szepasszony + Dana = Good, but not as sweet as SW. The Unicorn + Szep. + Dana = WHERE DID THE SCENT GO?? I get a really light combo of the three. Smells clean and fresh though. Hmmm... Side note- I get a slight plasticky note from the combos that I don't get from the individual blends. Oh well, I'll stick to the individual scents. Dana + Unicorn is pretty nice though, may yet wear that again. -
I'm wondering whether my decants were mislabeled, because the one labeled Pumpkin II smells like CHOCOLATE and the one labeled Pumpkin III smells herbal-y and floral. I'm trying to figure out which is which, since I really want to buy a bottle of the one labeled II! Here's my review of the one labeled II anyway: In the imp: buttery, pumpkin, chocolatey smell. MAYBE it's the tobacco, but it's just so foody! And I can't smell any carnation. I can, however, smell what may be tonka. On me: My skin is amping chocolate and cream with a hint of pumpkin pie spice. O_O Dry: It just might be a sweet tobacco scent. To my newb nose, though, it smells like Mexican hot chocolate. I hope Día de Reyes smells like this!

If anything ever smelled like a teenybopper's fantasy of Capt. Jack Sparrow, this is it. Real pirates, I am sure, reeked something awful, but Pirate Moon smells AWESOME. This is the sundrenched and sea-worn deck of a ship docked near a palm-dotted beach at mid-day after it has been scrubbed clean and stocked with goodies for a honeymoon voyage. It smells equally awesome on me and on my fiancé; in fact, it's the first BPAL scent that he's asked to wear again (though we just discovered Wilde today from a frimp, and he has asked for a bottle in my next order). This is going to be a popular, sought-after scent, I can tell already. I'm just mourning the fact that I only bought one bottle and will have to split this between the boy and myself!

My fiancé LOVES Wilde and the new Pirate Moon on himself! He also enjoys Scarecrow and October.

That's how I say it in my head, but if I was talking I'd probably just end up saying "the lab" because I don't like spelling out acronyms either. So at least you're not the only idiot Thanks guys! I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone in my pronunciation.

As some of the will-call reviews have said, Plunder smells just like a spice rack. The spice I predominantly get is cinnamon bark, with maybe slight touches of the other listed notes. It's a very dry scent. For cinnamon fans, this cinnamon is completely different from any other BPAL cinnamon scent I've smelled--where Wrath smells like Big Red gum and Chimera is a sweet cinnamon, Plunder is a dry, almost bitter cinnamon with no sweetness at all. I agree with Betty that it is heavily reminiscent of holiday potpourri and lasts quite long, even after attempts to wash it off (only because I was putting on Temple of Dreams to go to bed!). I thought about getting a bottle of this unsniffed, and I'm glad I didn't simply because I don't think I'd be able to use it all. I'm definitely keeping the imp around to use in my burner or when I feel like smelling sharply like cinnamon--maybe to keep me awake during an exam!

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but does anyone else pronounce "BPAL" like "Bee-pal"? I hate spelling out acronyms and Bee-pall is easier to say, but I'll feel like an idiot if no one else calls it that. :-P

Samhain 07 This is the BPAL scent I was most anticipating as soon as I saw the website for the first time (about a month ago), and I was almost heartbroken when I finally put it on. Almost. In the imp: Oh...mmm...mulled cider awesomeness with a hint of crisp leaves. My friend Martha sniffs it and says she smells more of a woodsy dried leaf smell. Wet on skin: Huh? It's all damp woods and burning leaves the moment it touches my skin. It smells GOOD but a little masculine, and I want my pumpkin, apples, and spices! Initial drydown: Ok, NOW I'm getting a whiff of chemical plastic under the leaves, which is exactly what Jack did to me (please don't it let be the pumpkin note!). I'm devastated! One hour later: Oh thank GOD. The plastic scent only lasted a minute and now I have the beautiful scent of apple cider wafting around me, complemented by the bite of the dry leaves and damp wood. YAY, THIS IS WHAT I WANTED. The verdict: Absolutely gorgeous and after having worn this multiple times, I never smelled the chemical plastic scent again. It has decent throw but not overwhelming. Hours later it's a faint lovely spicy scent, and I have no problem with reapplying to get the woods again and start the "scent adventure" all over! Goes straight to my top five! PERFECT Fall scent!

First review ever! I knew I was going to have a LOOONG day (classes/meetings/sorority recruitment from 11am- 11pm) so I chose one of my newly-ordered BPALs that I thought would bring me energy and keep me from falling asleep in class. *When I first put it on at 10am, it smelled exactly like Big Red gum. Not bad- it was energizing and interesting. *Two hours later, in Spanish, it smelled like Big Red gum. *At 4:00 when I was walking to opera rehearsal in the sweaty, humid Indiana air, I was thinking What smells so good? Yeah, you guessed it, it was ME. The Big Red smell had died down a bit, and it was spicy and slightly sweet/floral. It made me feel very attentive and happy, confident. *Throughout recruitment (8pm-11), I caught little whiffs of the same spicy-floral scent lingering about me, which was reassuring because I felt like I had been sweating all day between walking all over campus in the heat and now being in a room packed with sorority girls. *Sitting at my computer now, at almost 12:30, more than FOURTEEN HOURS after I had applied Wrath, it's STILL there, and it smells like yummy fancy soap, the kind that sits in little dishes and is carved into shapes of flowers, with a light touch of the spicy cinnamon scent. It's a nice, soft, relaxing, and CLEAN scent to end my day with. In short, Wrath worked amazingly well with my body chemistry, adapting to my various needs all day. I got so hot and sticky, yet it made me smell and feel clean and fresh throughout it all. I didn't think I'd like it all that much, but I'm so glad I ordered an imp to try. Next time I order, I'm getting a bottle for SURE.
