Snake Oil Help! Layering it, Snake Pit scents, blends with Snake Oil
InvinciChicken replied to spaceprostitute's topic in Recommendations
I'm convinced that somewhere hidden in Snake Oil is the richest, most beautiful vanilla I have ever smelled. Unfortunately the throw I get is all patchouli, incense, headshop, and old-lady perfume. Only when I smell it up close do I get that lovely and sweet vanilla... I have tried O (which turns into a disgusting flavor reminiscent of stale popcorn butter on me), Gluttony (which is toffee and caramel, and then turns into the same popcorn butter), Eclipse (lovely but not in the same category), and Blood Kiss (also lovely and with a beautiful vanilla, but not rich enough), all at the recommendation of a friend. Any other recs? I am still looking for that perfect vanilla fragrance! -
This Nocturne belonged to my friend and I sniffed it when she brought it to school, so I had no idea what it was supposed to smell like. In-bottle: Oooh, flowers. One of those night-blooming flowers (duh). It smelled a little like jasmine and a bunch of other sweet, ethereal floral scents all thrown together but in a very tasteful way. Of all the scents my friend let me sniff, this was my favorite and so I put some on. Dry-down: For some reason I smelled cream in this...? Still smelled mainly of jasmine, florals, and more florals. Still pretty. Still has that mysterious scent that only night-blooming flowers have. But with cream. Maybe my nose is bonkers, lol Dry: The cream faded away after about an hour. So did the rest of the florals, so it smelled basically like jasmine with a hint of greenery. Now, about 7 hours after applying, I can still faintly smell flowers and greenery. Very long lasting, but the complexity fades pretty fast. Overall: I was really happy when I smelled cream in this perfume, even though it might have been my imagination, since I'm a foody-scent kinda gal. I like florals, but I don't really wear them. This would be an incredible potpourri scent, though. Highly recommended if you like florals, mysterious scents, or lovely room scents.

This was a free imp from the lab. I would never have ordered it myself, so I'm glad they sent me a sample In the bottle: It's very sweet. Yes, it does smell like freshly laundered blankets and sweaters, but it also smells fruity and floral. It actually smells a lot like B&BW's Sweet Pea scent. I really like Sweet Pea so it's all good. Wet: Ah. Smells the same. It's a little too strong to be "breezy" and "cool", though. Dry: Hmm. It still smells like laundry and sweet pea, but now I'm getting something greenish in the background. Trampled grass, maybe. It also smells rather like shampoo bubbles and freshly scrubbed skin. And laundry. Very strong detergent. Verdict: I'm not a laundry-scent person, so this isn't for me. However, it's a very beautiful fragrance. You could almost call it simple, but it's lovely in its simplicity. It reminds me of lounging around in a clean kitchen, with the sunlight shining through the white curtains on top of the white countertop and just staring at the brightly lit neighborhood outside. I think its that grassy note that reminds me of all of this. I'm rambling now, so I'll just say that if you like those clean-laundry-cotton-sheet-soap scents, this is perfect. Probably not going to wear it all that often, but summer's coming up and this is the perfect weekend relaxation scent. --edit--- Ok, I think my skin is weird or something. Maybe it's my sniffer, too. Some note that I cannot identify that smells extremely sharp and chemically just popped up. I really don't like it. It was such a nice laundry-fresh scent before, too! But I gotta wash this off now. I'm feeling nauseated. I'm so sad. My body chemistry is wonkyyy!

Mm... Sounded quite yummy in the description and the name was perfect, so I had to try it. In the bottle: I think it's almonds. For a moment I thought it smelled almost minty, but that was probably the cinnamon being devilish Wet on skin: Ahh... almonds! It smells like almond jelly. It's reminiscent of this almond soap that I used once that smelled very nice, but it also smells kind of boring right now. If I wanted to smell like almond soap, I would use almond soap. Dry: This is still almonds, but I'm getting some vanilla and cinnamon. I have no idea what the heliotrope and frankincense is supposed to smell like, though. For some reason I think of this as an airy, cool scent, not a warm, golden one. The cinnamon doesn't feel HOT, it feels minty, kinda like chewing gum. Now that that thought is stuck in my head, I can't help but sniff Big Red and Juicy Fruit gum in this perfume. Several hours later: The scent, IT IS FADING! I can smell the body wash I used under this perfume. That makes me sad. Other than that, it hasn't changed much. Verdict: It's nice, but forgettable. It makes me think of clouds and wind and an overall feeling of delicateness. That's not really what I was expecting: I was expecting a rich, warm scent with almonds and vanilla and cinnamonny goodness with a foody tinge. This is a very pretty, soft scent, but it's not me. And it fades too fast. Meh.

I love jasmine. Or I think I do. I wanted to try something different, so I ordered this sultry sounding scent. Yayyy In the bottle: HOLY. This is overpowering. This is an entire garden squished into a few drops. Something is off about the scent of flowers, but I can't really think because it's so strong. I tentatively apply. Wet: omg. I can't smell anything but strong strong florals. Is that the touch of decay? This isn't smelling that romantic right now... Dry: Ok. It's calmed down a little. I pictured a scent reminiscent of walking through a greenhouse, the air heavy with the scent of delicate flowers. This is more jasmine-and-honeysuckle concentrate, with pure fumes being pumped directly into my nostrils. I've always thought of these flowers delicately perfuming the night air with their ethereal fragrances, but maybe I'm wrong. And I put on so little, too. And I think I'm smelling that "overripe" scent, but instead of lingering softly in the background, it's very obvious. Like you've just walked into a dead part of a garden. I do get the laziness, though. And the heat. But I can't smell anything beyond the flowers. No spice, no lemon, not even leaves or grass or any atmosphere at all. Just flowers. Eventually it overpowered me and I washed it off. *sigh* It could be nice, if diluted: I should try that next time. As it is, though, it's not me. ._. I am a little disappointed - it did sound mysterious and tempting. I really wish it worked for me...

Gluttony just sounded so tempting. Not getting it would be like blasphemy. In the bottle: I was definitely expecting chocolate. I almost thought that they had bottled the wrong perfume. All I smelled was something... nutty? Kind of like toffee. It smelled very heavy so I applied sparingly Wet: Toffee! And maybe some coffee, too. This stuff is powerful. Dry: Still smells like toffee and coffee to me. Amazingly, I don't really want to eat it. It reminds me more of very dark, sort of burnt coffee served black, the kind that smells fabulous but you wouldn't really want to drink. And perfect squares of golden toffee that look gorgeous on a small platter, but would probably knock your teeth out if you tried them. There's also something strangely woody underneath all this... the hops, maybe? nuts? I'm also getting very slight hints of caramel popcorn, like its being displayed in the back and not in your face. I was hoping for chocolate, which never surfaced. And a bigger vanilla kick, too. Meh. Final verdict: It's yummy, I'll give you that, but I was really hoping for dark chocolate and sweetness and vanilla and buttercream. The smell of burnt coffee and toffee is indeed delicious, but not really my cookie. I'm sure it would be perfect for those looking for that lovely dark coffee smell, though *edit* Is my nose adjusting?? I dunno, but I'm getting whiffs of chocolate and caramel now. Somebody said they smell like Butterfingers and I'm inclined to agree. Also Reese's Peanut Butter Cups -- mmm. There's still that honeyed toffee note that makes me feel guilty every time I smell myself, so I still don't think this is an everyday scent. But I'm liking it more and more! Also Snake Oil + Gluttony = good. *edit again* I forgot to say that this on my clothes smells absolutely rancid. Gotta be careful when putting on shirts.

I was very eager to try this because the description sounded so yummy. "Lush, creamy vanilla", "blood red wine", "skin-light pulse of feral musk", oh my! In the bottle: a punch of something that reminded me of something that I'd eaten before. Something addictive; I thought it might be some kind of nut. I couldn't place what it was. My mom said "cinnamon!" I didn't think it was cinnamon but I decided it was indeed some sort of spice. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to smell like it, but I applied it anyway. Drydown: the smell remained and intensified. It wasn't BAD, but it was almost kind of boring. Where was the vanilla and wine? I raided the kitchen cupboards to find out exactly what kind of spice it was and lo and behold: cloves! 1-2 hours later: Blood Kiss is not terribly strong, so I can't really smell it unless I put my nose a couple of inches from my wrist. And that's just how I love my perfumes. The cloves have stepped back into this really rich, delicious vanilla. It's also quite a bit sweeter than before, probably the honey? It smells a little food-y. However, I wish the cloves would fade a little bit more. It makes me feel like I've dusted myself with ground spices. If I liked spices a bit more, this perfume would be PERFECT. Unfortunately for me, it's just a bit too much. Alas my fickle likes T_T

Seeing all the lovely reviews for O, I had to try some. In the bottle it smells... sweet. That's all. Kind of like brown sugar, actually. I'm not entirely sure, but I can't pick out anything really specific. I put it on and immediately thought, "INCENSE?!" It smelled almost exactly the same as the Snake Oil I put on the night before. Maybe it layered magically and amped up the Snake Oil, so I let it sit for awhile. It still didn't seem to change after awhile. I kept thinking "incense" but it didn't REALLY smell like... I offered my wrists to my parents. Mom could only tell me that it smelled good, but Dad said "Yummy. Smells just like baby powder!" Me: ...D= what?? Dad: Well, would you rather smell like old man powder? Me: That's not the point! So I suppose that O doesn't really work with my chemistry. All I get is powder! Boo... I really, really wanted to like this. T_T ---edit--- Here I am a few months later, trying O out again. I think that amber just does not like my skin, or something. I put some on my wrist and it smells like rancid butter. Well, maybe not that bad... but something in it just makes me gag when I smell it. It reminds me simultaneously of stale popcorn butter, sweaty body odor, badly-baked buttery cookies, and baby powder. Oh, and you know the scent of a public bathroom at the start of the day? The faint smells of the previous day's "usage" still lingers, coupled with the sweet deodorizer used to mask it. That's what O reminds me of. I know, I know, this is supposedly a beautiful scent, but this perfume literally makes me sick. I think it could be just my nose, though. My mom put it on and said that it was a mature, pretty, interesting fragrance. It smelled exactly the same on her skin as it did mine: disgusting! At least to me. Yeah, my nose is bonkers. I'm giving this imp to my mom and not looking back.

Yay - my first review! When I got the cap off this overwhelming rush of incense came out of the bottle. It smelled a lot like pressing my nose against a fresh box of incense, sniffed through the plastic and unsullied by smoke. It's a nice smell but very overpowering, and not something that I particularly enjoy as a perfume. This scent is STRONG - a teeny bit got on my fingers from the cap and it was enough to scent both wrists and my neck. My mom immediately complained that she could smell me from across the room. And it still smelled like overpowering incense. Bummer. A couple hours later I could detect a little hint of something else... maybe the vanilla? but the incense is still too strong. Now it's been around 6 or 7 hours. I woke up from a nap, sniffed my wrists, and was pleasantly surprised. The incense has really mellowed out and it's now just this perfumey, exotic scent. It screams SULTRY. It's like... darkly elegant. I'm really starting to like it, but having to wait 6-7 hours for this smell is not cool I'm gonna age mine and see if it's any different a few months from now. ---edit--- Way too lazy to wait a few months, but already the oil is changing. Or maybe I'm just weird Anyway, whereas before it was incense/patchouli/perfume-y simplicity, now I can smell the vanilla. And it's rich vanilla, with a hint of slightly burnt sugar. YUM. I'm a big vanilla lover. I hope that in time this smell will become even stronger. The incense/spice gives it just the right kick to make this not another boring vanilla scent. I shall now put this imp to age and await the results eagerly, and perhaps make a 5ml purchase if my parents will let me.
