La Prostitution et la Folie Dominent le Monde
tinyvulture replied to Bassmastadroog's topic in Lupercalia
I'm so thrilled I blind-bought this. I love sugared or creamy florals, and I adore jasmine, so this could really be my signature scent. It's very womanly, not girlish at all. Worldly and sophisticated. Anise gives the slightest touch of spicy sexiness. SO perfect, new #1 scent!! -
GORGEOUS rose incense. Not totally rose...the frankincense is there, too. So pretty. No red licorice at all for me! Smells ancient and mysterious. I don't know my rose from rose champaca, but whatever it is, I love it.
-
French toast, maple syrup, and cinnamon sugar! My mom used to always serve French toast with cinnamon sugar and that's the scent memory The Strange Old Woman conjures up for me. Straight-up foodie breakfast goodness!
-
Like a sexy French version of the lab's various cold/icy/slushy blends. It's sweet, smoky, incensy, I could swear there's a bit of anise. Beautiful and sophisticated. Others smelled citrus, but there's none for me, thankfully. It's like being warm and cozy in bed with a sexy someone, in a cabin in the snowy woods.

This starts as a nicely spicy ginger blend. There's a citrusy note (cubeb?) that I don't care for, but the sweet amber and warm ginger are valiantly trying to temper it. There's nothing hot and spicy about it...sorry, scorpion pepper! 20 minute later -- the citrus won that battle. Off to swaps you go.

I love De Vos' Unicorn so! I'm going to have to stockpile any and all blends containing mallow. It's my current obsession. And I'm always a soft touch for a sugared floral. Peony can get lemony on me, but that's not happening here. Sugar, vanilla and mallow are soft and powdery and gorgeous. It's a floral blend, though, not foodie. Dreamy and light-hearted, just like a unicorn floating on a cloud, wearing a crown of flowers!

Almost a single-note lavender. Warmed and sweetened just slightly by the amber. I like these notes, but as far as the lavender blends in this batch of Liliths, my preference is with the aquatic wistfulness of Waiting.
-
Hazelnut and patchouli...a match made in heaven! Rich, warm and indulgent. The red musk is present as well, but it's not amping too bad. Same with the leather. They're noticeable, but they're letting the salty, buttery, vanilla hazelnut and earthy patchouli shine. Stays close to the skin, but so lovely.

Dignified and somber, a scent of ancient wisdom! I admit I'm partial to this blend since I work in a library. I'm picking up dusty parchment, paper, candlewax, and quite a bit of rose. I'm not sure I could pick out the stryax or onycha. Not getting any leather at all. Later on, it's still a combination of roses, wax, and books. Love.
-
It's so reedy. I was expecting a somewhat foody scent, but I get no vanilla frosting at all. It's actually the green, watery papyrus reed that's center stage here. It's sunny, almost lemony. I don't really do lemony or watery, personally, but it's a unique and interesting perfume. Can't say I've ever smelled of papyrus before!

At first I get salt, like a salted caramel almost. Or salted tortilla chips as Lycanthrope said. A touch of ginger floats in the background. The white tobacco is eluding me. The tropical fruits are surprisingly understated. I was anticipating more guava and mango since they're kind of uncommon notes. I haven't been to Cuba, but this reminds me of eating fruit for breakfast in Mexico under the warm sun by the beach. 10 minutes in, salt spray and gingery floral perfume is what remains.
-
A big splash of root beer with vanilla - yum! It's a nice contrast with the sharp leather note. Like drinking a rootbeer float with your biker boyfriend past curfew - retro and naughty. I won't need a bottle as I already own Stimulating Sassafras Strengthener, although I think I prefer the boldness of this scent.
-
A cluster of roses and other gorgeous, lush flowers. I'm not familiar with mariposa (butterfly jasmine) or mahoe, but I love the bright, exotic vibe of this floral blend. Makes me wanna visit Cuba so bad!!
-
Sandalwood and vanilla - a fantastic everyday, every situation perfume. My nose sometimes confuses sandalwood and cedar ("pencil shavings"), and I think of this blend as Tombstone's sweeter little sister. I wish it was a GC so I could just buy bottles from time to time...I'd wear it that often. It would make a great gift for someone just getting into scents as well.

A gorgeous lavender blend. "Wistful" is a good way to describe it, as whitewhale said. It's a little soapy, but in a pleasant way - very clean and natural. Like lavender mixed with a rain-scented candle. One of the few aquatics that I love!
-
An inspired, complex rose scent worthy of the English poets buried in Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. Think of a single rose laid in an underground crypt. Stone walls and faded incense with soft rose petals. From this entire batch of Liliths, this was the one I needed a bottle of!
-
I tested this at a meet & sniff a couple years ago and I have been trying to acquire a bottle ever since. Now it's mine! It's very clean and stark. Like brittle alien flowers glowing on an otherwise cold and empty planet. Cold, clean, unpolluted space atmosphere, with the strange florals that grow in the pale glow of the moon. One of a kind.
-
Earthy, hippie blend of fig and patchouli. Very sweet due to the honey and vanilla, but not cloying. The closest GC is probably Gomorrah. This scent reminds me more of Bernie than Hillary, to be honest! But, hippie is totally what I go for, so I'm pleased to have a bottle in spite of the sad political circumstances it connotes. Nasty Woman is a winner just like Hillary with the popular vote.
-
A masculine scent...the leather and tobacco blend smoothly with spiced rum. It's not that boozy...I could probably wear it to work and not receive strange looks. It dries down to a spicy leather, which is nice, but not enough for me to want a whole bottle.

I love Witch Dance and Scherezade, so I'll definitely have to check out Crimson! And that Dead Leaves blend sounds lovely, I do love a good clove note. Aside from Florence which I adore (because of the Renaissance, you nailed it! ) these others haven't been on my radar. Definitely adding to my wishlist! Cleric sounds amazzzing. Ah! there is just soooooooooo much to choose from! From the start to the finish, you are evidently aligned with being Good. Your Love for your children and that which is shown to your students is clearly so pure and whole that it reminds me of all the sugary playfulness contained in the scent..especially fitting as it is also perfect for the love you have of teaching young ones. They probably consider you a shining light in their lives... Dia probably resides in you somewhere! Such a patience is needing in The School-House (okay, in the school enviornment haha), that your love of history and art just seems to reflect how passionate you are about books and even though you may not have been to The Library of John Dee, you clearly have a vested interest in furthering your own knowledge. For your willingness to go on adventures and enjoy the kind of fun that is intensive, Thunder and Blazes and manic sugary jolts of energy! I get the impression also, that you appreciate nature and balance from your text- so On the Porch and in the Rain are great reflections of this. Philommeides a laughter loving epithet of Aphrodite strikes me as a core of who you are and what you extract from doing the things you enjoy with those whom you love...and for the uncanny mention of being in the woods placed right before the mention of a hot beverage, I have also suggested Hell's Acres Yule Tree Farm. You definitely seem to enjoy all aspects life has to offer, even the finer, more indulgent things.. you might be The Light of Men's Lives (hahahaha- so cheesy but it begged to be here!). ____________________________________________________________________ Here is the more comprehensive list of everything I selected based on your dialogue about your personality Dia: Divine, shining. White amber, coconut, white musk, oakmoss, and tobacco flower. Good: Shimmering celestial musk with vanilla, white honey, acacia, and sugar cane. Hell's Acres Yule Tree Farm: We have pyre-ready firewood for sale, plus free candy canes and hot cocoa for the kids! We also offer ceremonial flocking! Love: Marshmallows and rose sugar with whipped vanilla cream and a hint of strawberry. On the Porch in the Rain: A white chypre drenched in soft spring rain against a backdrop of gently swaying bamboo reeds. Enchanted Wood Florist: Unmatched artistry! Skilled in terrestrial, extra-terrestrial, and dreamscape floristry, these are the only artisans on Earth that are qualified to work with Moon-trees. Philommeides: Laughter loving. Peach wine, carnation, lemon peel, osmanthus, blood orange, wood violet, and tuberose. The Lights of Men's Lives: The wax and smoke of millions upon millions of candles illuminating the walls of Death’s shadowy cave: some tall, straight, and strong, blazing with the fire of life, others dim and guttering. The Library of John Dee: Worn leather bindings, the dry crackle of ancient paper, styrax and onycha, frankincense, a drop of candle wax, and the barest fleck of dried Tudor roses. The School-House: Dandelion, white clover, balsam fir logs, and birchwood switches. Thunder and Blazes: Leather, crushed grass, mud, sangre de grado, and crushed lemon candy. Venus Genetrix: Venus the Progenitor Black amber and jasmine tea with 7-year aged vanilla bourbon absolute. Thank you so much for this amazing list! Love is on my MUST HAVE list, I have trouble tracking down a bottle to purchase because the name is hard to search, but some day! And On the Porch and Library of John Dee sound totally enchanting. Thank you all who took the time to think of suggestions for me, it is greatly appreciated and I think you all have a real talent for this! -
Scent Recs based on your PERSONALITY!

I'm awkward at describing myself so I'm just going to spit some things out! Eternal optimist. Believe most people are trying to do their best. Super shy and quiet but also weirdly extroverted at times...I do like to be around people and have interesting conversations...I just don't need it every day. Dry, quiet sense of humor. I am not "crafty" but I do like making little things with my hands IE papercraft. I don't like working a desk job staring at a computer, I need to be using my hands or up moving around. I am currently an elementary school library assistant and I love it. Love working with kids, they are such sweet spirits. Good at entertaining myself, love to read, historical fiction mostly. Love history and art (majored in Italian Renaissance art history), like to draw but don't practice enough. Love TV shows that keep my brain busy like Game of Thrones, Mr. Robot. Hate sitcoms. Nerdy in some ways (see constant reading) but not into comics or Dr. Who, stuff like that. I like indie rock, world music, anything that doesn't sound like everything else. Looooove thunderstorms, rainy weather in general, being in the woods, drinking tea, being snuggly on the couch with loved ones, getting massages, hot baths, incense, candles, BPAL of course, all that sensory stuff. I love to go to art shows, new restaurants, travel, just have new experiences as much as possible. Mom of 2 sweet babes, totally into having adventures with my kids, spending time with them keeps me young, their excitement is contagious. They know I will always find us something new and fun to explore. Um what else. Love food, love to cook, lifelong vegetarian, I do yoga every day, total crunchy granola hippy liberal. Huge sweet tooth but I try not to indulge it so I've grown away from foodie scents. Love the way health food stores smell, haha. All those herbs mixed together. Favorite places that feel like home: Vancouver BC, Santa Fe NM, Valladolid MX, London UK. From Michigan, spent a long time in Oklahoma, a little time in upstate NY, now in Texas. Favorite smells: star jasmine in the spring, hot jasmine tea on a chilly morning, pumpkin guts, Nag Champa, roasted garlic, the air after it rains, sawdust, clove cigarettes, a bunch more I can't remember right now! -
Favorite BPAL name ever. "Poor monkey," is what I call my kids when they are sick. I know they don't share any notes, but this reminds me of Pink Snowballs. Both are sweet, creamy, lingering vanilla florals. My favorite kind of BPAL floral! Lotus and ylang ylang are always toothache-inducing sweet notes on me, and they're much stronger than the earthy fig which remains just under the surface. Lotus + vanilla + cream = bottle!

Somehow I passed over this, and then it was offered to me in a swap. I thought, why not? It's right up my alley -- a simple frankincense blend, quite similar to Midnight Mass (but without the odd "banana" note I get from MM!). I think it's spicier and warmer than Cathedral, thanks to the tobacco and clove notes. Clove cigarettes in church, what a picture! The frankincense note just gets bolder and bolder. This is a good one for the lapsed Catholics.

Irish cream, white cake, warm coffee, buttery caramel. It's not very boozy on me. It's very sweet and candy-ish, like walking into a See's Candy or something. All that butter, cream, and sugar in the entire shop, concentrated into one small bottle of scent. I think it's a close relation to Eat Me, but I prefer this.

BITTER orange is right. It's not a sweet citrus at all. The patchouli is DARK, earthy. Little bit of warm amber. But mostly, citrus and patchouli, so raw and almost harsh. But I like it.
