    Rosalind

When I first opened the imp, I had to stick the vial up my nose to get any sort of scent from it. (My entire order smells like a head shop, so florals don't poke through that well.) I knew when I ordered that florals weren't for me. I thought, "Hey, I'll try one. Why not? BPAL sounds so damn awesome, I just might find a nice green scent for me." Hahahahahahahaha not. Upon opening the vial: Yellow. Yellow, yellow, yellow scent. On my skin: Lemon. WOOH, LEMON! Now it smells like...floral-scented disinfectant. It's been about fifteen minutes and that's all it's been; I'm getting a slight peek-through of berries. I'll come back and update on the state of Rosalind. (On a better note—no pun intended—I have Black Forest on the other wrist and am falling in love for the second time!) Edited for spelling retardation. And later: A hint—hint—of berry, but it's not even enough to convince my stupid nose that it's berry. No sign of the disinfectant going away. I knew florals hated me. Another edit: I went and applied more on, since I couldn't tell if berries were peeking out at me or not. I like it more. Unless it really changes, I won't wear it, but it's a nice, fresh, green scent, reminiscent of sunshine and green, grassy hills and little girls in pigtails and blue checkered smocks picking flowers...uurgh. I actually think I really like this. I'd never wear it, not in a million years, and it's headed straight to the 'Swap' pile, but I like it. Go figure. Another another edit: Wow. It fades quickly. My last and final edit: I tried this once more, after having let it sit for a short while (just to let everything settle) and there is definitely an "Ooh, bubblegum" quality to it. It's a very dry, smooth berry that reminds me of air freshener. Citrus cleaner and air freshener—Lord, I should wear it when I clean motel rooms. *laughs* Ooh, the more it sits on me, the more berry it gets. Sadly, I'm not a floral girl.

    Loviatar

This is warm, spicy; a simply gorgeous cloud of myrrh and amber. (I didn't even want to try this imp on my skin. I just opened it to smell it, and I swiped the wand across my nose. So I rubbed my nose on my hand and went off to wash my face, lol.) Unfortunately, I'm not getting any leather. I love the scent by itself, but...I wanted leather! Maybe I need to get an imp of De Sade to layer with it. The "Ooh, leather, dominatrix" chain of thought is what drove me to Loviatar in the first place. Maybe I'd have more luck with Wanda (or Whip, or Perversion...I want to try them all anyways.) Gosh, it's such a gorgeous scent. There's a tangy bite to it—spicy goodness—but *sob* no leather! Edit: I am officially jealous of everyone who loves this scent. I wanted to love it--I was all ready to love it--but *sob* it turned into "Old lady addicted to pot" on me. It reminds me of disinfectant and bad perfume. I have a love/hate relationship with it, but I had The Boy sniffing me and saying, "Oh my Lord! I smelled a perfume in Spencer's that smelled just like you. What was it called? Oh yeah, Man on Fire." Haha, yeah. Thanks. Then, later, I was sniffing myself and I whined, "I smell like old lady!" He looked at me and laughed and said, "Yeah, I wasn't going to mention anything, but now that you brought it up, yes, you do." So Loviatar is out, as well as Snake Oil. *sigh*

    Snake Oil

Ugh. I was really hoping to like this. It's a beautiful, sweet, creamy, thick scent, that's waaaaaaay too foody for me. I'm more of a fan of the spicy, sharp vanilla (that I thought Snake Oil would be on me ). It's really a wonderfully blended note; I can't distinguish the vanilla above everything else, but it smells too..."glazed". It's too sugary for my tastes. (Watch this be the one I get all the compliments on. Go figure.) [Edit: This is a very dusty sweet scent, like old candy. I'm not swapping it, because I rather like all my imps (except Satyr, which just smells like goat pee)]

    Satyr

*sigh* Wet, this screams with musk. It's a dark, thick, sweaty scent. If I smell from my wrist (and I can't smell it unless I really shove my nose up to my wrist, which makes me think that through my allergies, I put too much on) and sniff deep, I get an acrid, nasty 'cat pee' smell from the civet. Edit: It's drying down and oozing sex. I can't keep from smelling my wrist. This has a salty brine on top of a blend of spices and musks. It does smell like goat, though, which is making me think twice about wearing it to the county fair next week. Another Edit: It turned sweet. It still has the sweaty, feral scent, but it's sweeter; less bitter and acrid. Another another edit: I layered it over Scherezade, which had all but disappeared (I couldn't smell it, at least). That might have something to do with the sweetness.

    Scherezade

This is going to be a quickie review, because I have my wrist glued to my nose. I'm not sure how I feel about Scherezade. I layered it over dry Snake Oil, because on its first try (and two layerings) Snake Oil has no throw whatsoever. It's a bit foody for me, anyways. In these reviews, some people said that Scherezade is Snake Oil minus the vanilla. I'm not getting that at all. Snake Oil was smooth, and round, and (a little too) foody, but it was sweet and nice in its own way. Not sexy. Scherezade is a spicy, thick blend. It's sharp and it tickles your nose. It smells complex (probably just because I'm too dense to pick out particular notes ). All in all, I think I like Sin better—but I suppose I need to take my imps on a couple more test drives. Edit: About three hours later (Neither Sin, Snake Oil or Scherezade have any sort of staying power on me ) it's mellowed (and faded) into a faint, faint, faint but smooth blend of spices, with just enough sharpness to lend interest. I like it like this, but it doesn't ooze confidence like Sin did with me. I swear, nothing sticks to me. It's barely dry before POOF! it's gone.

    Sin

Oh, my. Oh my, my, my. I myself can barely smell this on me (damn both my allergies and the stupid evolution of the "block out scent" part of the brain), but my mom and I were at a barbeque today, and she leaned in to tell me something and I said, "Ooh! Smell me!" just on a whim. She didn't let go. She was going insane over Sin on me. Apparently, it smells really, really good. I'm going to try it on Mister Termite (I haven't seen him for over a week) and see what kind of reaction I get. I'll come back and make a better "scent review" later, but for now, Wet on my skin: I was expecting Sin to be a sweet cinnamon, like Hot Tamales or an Atomic Fireball. Wow, was I pleasantly mistaken! This is dry cinnamon, exactly like the sticks I chew to clear my sinuses. This is a cinnamon stick burning and the smoke curling up into the air. It's a gorgeous, smoky cinnamon, but not something I'd like to be smelling like. Dry a couple hours later: I love love love the drydown on this. It almost has a bitter tang to it (bitter and sweet, go figure), and there's still a smoky undertone that feels acidic when you breathe it in. The cinnamon has all but disappeared, and the amber and patchouli are creating a lusty, thick, deep scent. (I really hope this has awesome throw. I hate it when I can't tell if something smells on me or not.) This is a prostitute prowling in a first-rate pub. This is the smoky aftermath of sex with all sorts of kinky additions. I am in awe. I did layer this over Black Forest (BF doesn't stay well on me. Pity; I love the dry scent), so that may have affected it, but there wasn't any pine when it dried. (Now if only Black Forest had more throw on me. )

    Black Forest

Open imp: Whoa. Vicks Vapo-Rub. That’s all I’m getting. Damn it. I spilled already. There’s oil all over the side of the vial. Why is it so hard to open and close the darn things? Wet on me: Pine. Pine, pine, pine. I just crushed a pile of pine needles and shoved them up my nose. (It tickles like that, too.) But wait, there’s a slight dry sweetness buried under the pine, that keeps it from being too ‘fresh’ smelling. It smells like pine candles should smell. Dry: The pine definitely faded, although it’s far from being subtle. I get that ‘incensey’ scent again aaaaand…there goes the pine. It’s gone. Whoa, I can’t smell any perfume on me, and I put it on less than twenty minutes ago. Wait, it’s there, but barely. It’s a faint, spicy-smoky scent, that's a little bit dusty; I can only smell it if I attach my nose to my wrist and breathe. I don’t know if it’s the amount I put on, or the fact that my skin just doesn’t keep scent well, but I know that no matter what my skin does, there is no way I can use a scent locket with this, or run the wand through my hair. It’s much too ‘Christmassy-pine’ strong by itself. *sigh* I was really looking forward to this one, too. I suppose I'll try again another day. Edit: I just washed it off my wrists, and I think that (HOPE THAT!) it's my nose today, because after I rinsed all the soap off I sniffed my wrist to make sure all the Black Forest was gone (I was going to go try my luck with another) and the dark spicy note was still there (is that ambergris I'm smelling?), and I couldn't smell my soap at all. *crosses her fingers* Oh please, please, please let this be an allergic reaction to Black Forest! I don't mind not smelling it, as long as my skin doesn't suck it up! Yeah. Definitely an allergic reaction. I popped open the imp of Snake Oil, and I couldn't smell anything, save the barest hint of sweetness. Thanks, Black Forest. I love you, and you hate me. In between wet and dry: I added a bit more on my wrists (and didn't eff up with the imp this time!). This is the perfect blend of pine and spice. I forgot to mention how cool this feels on my skin. It's like a tingly, cold feeling on my skin, and it smells luscious. Edited again because I'm stupid. And in love. Okay, Black Forest is officially M'm m'm good. I tried it again, along with Rosalind on the other wrist (which, for some reason, I always think is named 'Josephine' and searched fruitlessly for in Illyria;)), and it was CHRISTMAS TREE! CHRISTMAS TREE! CHRISTMAS TREE! for a few minutes until it mellowed out into a nice blend of what smells like cedar (because of the spices) and a dry, spicy sandalwood? scent. OH GOD I'M IN LOVE. I think I want to let this mellow 'til fall or winter, though. It's definitely not a summer scent; it's not sultry and thick, it's spicy and bity. Yum.

What to wear to a rock show?

Definitely Loviatar or Wanda. Even De Sade would be a good choice. "When a problem comes along, you must whip it!" Edited because I'm stupid.

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils

From the Roadhouse review thread: The description makes it sound weedy, nasty; not a 'perfume' per se, but something to make you smell like you've been working all day and are going to go home to your thirteen kids and your pickup with the piss-smelling mattress in the back. (Sorry, I live around hicks, and they only make me detest them more with each passing day.) From your descriptions, though, it sounds like something I'd truly like to try! My only concern, however, is that I'm allergic to a vast majority of the pollen-producing plant life out there. Dandelions I'm not sure of, but I know I'm allergic to hay, and someone mentioned that they could smell it in a note. I'm not too worried about a skin reaction, but would anyone know I'd have an allergic reaction (stuffy nose, watery eyes, swelling throat, etc.) from smelling this stuff? Would plant/pollen residue in the perfume oil cause an allergic reaction? Sorry to be so picky.

How do you apply your BPAL oils?

I've been perusing the forums for a couple hours, trying to find the answer to my question, and I haven't yet. I apologize dearly if this has been beaten to death in a different post, but *sob* I just couldn't find it! As far as I can tell, there are three different basic options to apply perfume: straight from the bottle; mixing it with vodka or perfumer's alcohol to create a spray; and melting some processed (unscented) shea or coconut butter and beeswax down to create a solid perfume base. (I'm not going to get into the myriad of hair products, or lockets, et cetera. ) I'm tempted to just apply with a bobby pin straight from the bottle (once I get my bottles ordered..,), but are there any problems with this (other than spillage/contamination)? I don't want to have to go through all the trouble of making a spray or solid perfume, just to screw it up or not like it. I also dislike sprays in general; I don't like all the atomized droplets floating around in the air, that don't get on me! So is it basically just a "personal preference" decision? Or are there glaring pros and cons to each of the three methods?
