Allright m'dears! Time to assemble the troops for your fav blends that evoke 'wood'. From oiled banister to creaking pirate planks- what's done it best for you?
-
All right folks! Get me some water, cuz there I'm noticing an awefull lot of smoldering going on lately- my question is how do they all compare to one another? What makes you snifflers opt for the scent of Rumpelstilzchn over Djiin? Here's the list of known suspects: DJINN black smoke, of crackling flames, and smoldering ashes. THE APPLE OF SODOM Native to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, this fruit turns to ashes when plucked as a sign of God’s displeasure. RUMPELSTILZCHEN Firewood and ash with an oddly otherworldly blend of patchouli, cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper, tonka, vetiver, and myrrh. FIRE FOR THY STEPMOTHER'S DAUGHTERS Flaming coals, hellfire, and blackened bone. SMOKESTACK Creosote, coal, and industrial waste. THE GRAND INQUISITOR'S HERETIC'S FORK Coppery dried blood, metal, vetiver, and bonfire smoke. AGNES NUTTER Gunpowder, charred wood, smoke, and rusty nails. Anyone missing? Any LE's perhaps? and then there's the question of vetiver=smoke- what say you? and we could also muse on smokey leather's (wah! de sade I miss you!) but that might be another thread~

expect- snow white creamyness with a tea rose imp- excatley that- wet- more little girl-ish than I expected- a plastic tea set, the rose is faint~ verdict- mmm, this might grow on me-perhaps I will apply it in the secret corners of my life. The teddy bears are thirsty you know!

expect- ...to love the darkness. surprise me~ imp- smokey indeed- a bit incense-y. Was worried of this~second huff reveals a spicy berry underneath! yeehaw pimento! third wiff gives me the ginger and smokey vanilla- I am thoroughly exited! wet- hot hot hot! All of the above warmed by skin- still a tad puckering. The labdanum is still heavy duty, hand in hand with the oakmoss- we shall see who sticks around for the final level~ verdict- epp! all incense all the time folks- or at least too much for my sorry skin!~ The Labdanum sits on top of my wish for bitter smoke berries and grinds them to a pulp- perhaps I'll give it a round 2 sometime...

True to the promise- The 'nog does indeed appear in all its rich and boozy glory spice cream- alas! my skin is so hungry, it has been all gobbled up~ slathering will do me no good! perhaps it's time for those alternative uses? As it still smells delish~

expect- oats, oats, and honey!!!! a little bitta berry afterwards please~ imp- sweeter, almost in an almond way. certainly a berry eater! a bit of a plastic edge at the end, perhaps within a berry note? wet- almond oat honey- sweetened by berries- a much softer scent on the skin.(of which I am grateful~) a bit spicier verdict- the darlin' says' that you just forgot that a cherry lollipop melted on your hand! epp- I think it is a tad sweeter than I would like, but I'm quite taken with the oat note~perhaps when they're not around....heh!

expect- Been on a clove kick as of late- any spicy warm goodness send it my way! Wishing for a deep dark bitter blend- acrid and rich from the forest. Give me the brutal beast please bpal~! It seems when I want the dark, I just get snacks! Now then, here we go~! imp- Wavering between a gorgeous clove note, and the slightly mouthwashy pitch- the pine is a bridge between the two. Clove acts as a sweetener in this blend to the welcome acrid pitch. The second whiff reminds me of a new carpet-not favorably. It's a bit plasticky, and covers the clove. wet- cloves comes out after a bit of the sharp pitch- reminds me of the spicey-ness of Frederic. Nearly identical actually- perhaps it's the 'dark woods' notes in Frederic? That would make sense as the poem seems to evoke the 'dark woods' as well! Regadrless, the pine blends seemlessly~ not quite clove, nor pine. A sent unto its own, coffin planks~ dry- Softer- skin eats the pine, but blends well. A warmer, dryer scent now-from the merging- verdict- whelp, I was hoping for something new to me palette but I do quite enjoy this- but I do have me Frederic to keep me company~ Fantastic spicy stuff that, and not to be sniffed at for it's deceptive simplicity. Might layer quite well too , eh?

we met, and at first, had few words- your murky green glow draws me closer chthulhu! that minty spark in the midst of all that moody darkness- methinks I have a crush....
-
jolly good~ I feel I'm at a point with my sniffer that I can tell the difference between a tea rose and a hot-house rose! smell's like the tannins in a cuppa, with honeyed dew dropped pink roses crawling on the fence~ grandma's house really~ tell I have a soft spot?
-
yum! I'm enjoying this much more than I expected- it's not simply an evergreen scent. there's a warm vanilla-esque cedar (the bark, I'm assuming) at the center. lovely thought, eh- the scent takes the unfolds like the tree- branches, then bark. goes a bit car airfreshner cardboard on me later, thought, love the early stages!
-
really dislike aquatics, but the seaweed notes peaked me ears up~ a sweeter scent than I imagined, murky and dark oceanic- little goes a long way~

creamy dirt with yesterday's lilies in the next room!

kyoto is one of my top ten! a spicy cherry blossom, it's lovely and subtle~ kabuki is similar, but with the addition of a potent cherry. (I personally prefer kyoto, but it depends on taste!) aizen-myoo is also one of my all time favs! a juicy yuzu, it's quite a refreshing cheerful scent~ Kistsune-Tsuki I'd second- stronger ume~ akuma is a dark raspberry~ kumiho is a pleasent green tea, not earthy but perfume-y in the salon, THE LANTERN GHOST OF OIWA was strongly fruity sweet sake/ho wood, reminding me of hungry ghost moon-(meh!) and SPIRIT OF THE KOMACHI CHERRY TREE was a watery cherry blossom with lilac tones- a cold floral that has it's place, although I still prefer the warmer kyoto for cherry blossom scents. I haven't tried THE FOX-WOMAN KUZUNOHA LEAVING HER CHILD or ITASÔ KANSEI NENKAN JORÔ NO FÛZOKU or FOX FIRES ON NEW YEAR’S EVE AT THE GARMENT NETTLE TREE AT OJI or KIYOHIME CHANGES FROM A SERPENT has anyone? what do they think? -
wow! I am so surprised that I have reached for my implet thrice in the past couple of days! I braced myself for a cloying plasticky-ness that I experienced with come cake blends, but yum yum yum, what a light strawberry musky confection this is! someone quoted a Beaver'versary, and I'd say they're spot on-nom!

Gardening and the Scents of a Garden
dreadpiraterustypants2 replied to Effluvia's topic in Recommendations
All right folks! It's time to roll up those sleeves and don those wellies~ it's Plantin' Moon time! So in honor of our new update, what are your fav's for diggin' in the dirt? Is it notes of hay, earth, herbs, flowers? Lets spill those beans and water 'em too~ Right about now, I'm on a Amsterdam kick! Tulips and fresh grass, spring is in the air and on my pulse points~ ETA: yes, yes- sometimes being in the garden is about the scent of your garden! then what of the cold months, when we want to remember our garden's scent~ what bpal get's reached for then? Which bpal is your garden! or someone else's? or just shouts GARDEN in your nose! and what of blood garden, the witch's garden, the hanging garden...eden....are they garden-y? -
woah! HONEY BEEHAVE! It's that sticky soft honey powder~ how lovely! At first I got vanilla-bits, and it felt comparable to snake oil (any thoughts?)- then the honey comes out and its all musky Butterball~ good lord. watch out world.

expectations- I adore practically every Mad Tea Party scent- tea and cream and fruit love me, and I them! So seeing the alice imagery for agape made me see this as a continuation of the party~ Creamy fruit cups please~ bottle- caramel! a darker golden cream, yum-foodier than I expected! nom nom- wet- mmm-fruit comes out, tart apple in there with 'fruit cup' fruits. a gorgeous desert, fresh fruit with cream drizzled over. sweat pea gives a light floral component, mostly that tasty cream caramel and apple/passionfruit/guava. lovely and fresh! lighthearted and joyful-certainly tea party attending gear. drydown- apple comes out a bit more, less sweet- a bit of spicy carnation (carnation is adds a complexity really in the blend.) something a bit flat in there too- chalky. I recognize it and think it might be a skin chemistry oddity that happens with some 'cream' notes. but its quiet and not troublesome. verdict-- so glad for a bottle to be in my clutches! I wonder how it will age? Will the cream take over?
-
expectations- Well, I had wanted a peaty whisky grassy magic, but reviews point to just grassy magic- That'l do! I'll see what I can pick out~ also excited about tart cloudberries- imp- clover! and a bit of wine-y heather~ lovely and fresh, I can see the irish spring reference too, but it's not over the top here. wet- rolling grass covered hills, bluebells, dandelion flower, a touch of juniper- wow it's all there~ no smoke-y peat, so it goes. Perhaps that's why it's peat AND rolling grass, yes? Almost apple-y, it it's lush greeness. verdict- It's all clover blossom love for me, with supporting roles. don't need more than my half imp, she's potent stuff! Just starting to understand the difference between "throw" and gluing my nose to my wrist, this one seems to have a lovely clover up close, and a more "greener field" scent from afar ~

Dormouse! The Peony's are amazing- so fresh and crisp~ Amsterdam! Tulips and clean water~ Owen's Tomb- daffydils! Severin-the fresh citrus, with a merry tinge of darkness~ Kyoto-the spiced cherry blossom

Old books... Books, paper, libraries
dreadpiraterustypants2 replied to supervillainess's topic in Recommendations
Yes yes- I adore the lab's 'paper' notes~ So far Dee and Aziphrale are winners for me! Also- the Shunga 'Tissue" is spot on~ -
expectations- roses and pepper please imp- spicy carmelized roses~yum! wet- yum, interestingly foody-reminding me of butter rum cookies, or invasion of the flesh eating reindeer. must be the congac and caramel combo~ a bit quiet though, but that might be a nice change of pace- dry- fades to a soft rose verdict- warm and tasty, one of my fav Lupers'. A lovely comfort scent~
-
expectations- amp the ambergris/musk and have the other notes complexify' imp- mmm-yes, it might do just that~ warm musk- wet- musk-but also vanilla caramel, balsam, perhaps moss. a creamy floral note, reminding me a bit of Voyeurs Among the Cherry Blossoms? or Kyoto without the anise? odd! maybe it's the moss assisting.... getting a bit faint, but quite tasty. verdict- creamy musk, with a light floral blending (no woods for me) -quite like this one. Not gender specific~
-
expectations- smoldering red musk, a little spicy imp- hey vetiver!~ wet- blood kiss relative, a little sweeter later on-tonka? snake oil? (I'm glad other's got this too!) I like this phase, it's a less plastic-y snake oil on me. love child of blood kiss and snake oil! spicy, warm, and bitter- verdict- no need to upgrade, but certainly sniffable
