The Phantom Cow of Yerba Buena Island

I managed to get a full bottle of this one and am glad that I did. I usually hate bpal's milk scents (they smell sour and cloying on me), but I really like this one. Phantom Cow actually smells a lot like Ochosi & Buck Moon do on my skin. It's like a sunny, sweet, soft green smell. It smells like an enchanted meadow, fresh and uplifting. I don't smell any milk notes until this has been on my skin for about an hour and then it's a cool, smooth cream fragrance underneath the greenery. It doesn't smell like any of the other milk blends that I've tried. It's actually quite nice and wearable for me.

    Hideous Heart

In the bottle, this smells just like black cherry kool-aid powder. Tart and scary. On my skin, the cinnamon comes rushing in to terrorize everyone. Sharp, aggressive cinnamon. It eats the cherry alive and leaves no traces left behind. Every once in a while, I think I smell something licorice-like underneath the cinnamon, but it just smells strange. I'm not sure why I bought a bottle of this, because I know that bpal's cinnamon amps up and goes all sharp and overwhelming on my skin. It makes me smell like cheap, obnoxious potpourri . Hideous Heart is not a keeper for me. I have to wash off this cinnamon-fest before it starts to give me a splitting headache...

    Soothing System

In the bottle, this reminded me of Gluhwein and my heart skipped a beat (I just adore Gluhwein <3). It's like sweet, sexy, dark fruitiness and a bit of bubblegum. Gluhwein without the spice. On my skin, this has a brief moment of smelling like sexy wine and then quickly dissolves into smelling of grape juice and grape bubble tape gum. It's sweet, strong, happy, artificial purple grape. It softens after a while and becomes less in-your-face sweet, but it's still sweet and smells like grape bubblegum. I find this oddly appealing. Soothing System is a sweet, cheery fragrance. I'm going to use this for layering & mixing with other scents, as I can imagine it adding a fun touch to a lot of different things.

    A Fit of Artistic Enthusiasm

In the bottle, this smells like a crisp men's cologne. Aquatic, salty, and with a bit of woods. There's also a chill here that makes me think of pine and menthol, though that doesn't transfer over on to my skin. On my skin, I'm delighted that this doesn't instantly morph into laundry soap, as most aquatics do. It actually smells like a complex cologne on me. It's masculine and clean (and definitely has that salty-ocean smell), but also cool and has a slightly spicy feel that I get from a lot of men's colognes, with a hint of dry wood. Cold, salty ocean spray, dry wood, and that generic men's cologne base smell that makes me think of menfolk. I'm surprised at how much I like this. I don't know if I'd wear this much myself, but I'll love this on my husband. A Fit of Artistic Enthusiasm makes me fantasize about being on a ship in the middle of the ocean with my man. Not too shabby .

    Detestable Putrescence

In the bottle, this smells like a very warm, buttery, cloying vanilla. It's a bit like butterscotch. On my skin, this smells odd and boozy. It's like some sort of warm, creamy, butterscotch & booze drink. It smells like there's a hint of almond on my skin too (the closest thing it reminds me of is Dana O'Shee). As it dries down, this is less butterscotch and more of an odd, warm, sweet, grainy sort of vanilla. It still smells slightly of almond on my skin. It's a simple and high pitched sort of sweetness. Doesn't have much throw and only lasts about an hour. To call it vanilla ice cream would be a bit of a stretch, in my opinion. It's a sugary, buttery mess. Eta: I recently pulled this out to try again, to see if 2 1/2 years of aging made any difference with this scent, and now it smells oddly like banana candy and circus peanuts on me

Cinnamon Sugar Cookies & Egg Nog

In the vial, this smells like creamy cinnamon and a sweet syrup. On my skin, this kinda smells like burnt snickerdoodles. It reminds me of Sugar Cookie, which also smelled oddly like burnt cookies and play-doh on my skin. I definitely smell the cinnamon, but it isn't amping up & going crazy like it usually does. Smells like burnt-on-the-edges sugar cookies dusted with cinnamon and a hint of creamy play-doh. It sounds great, but it doesn't smell so great on me. At least I won't have to try to find more of this rarity.

What do bottles and labels look like?

Awww. I think that's the best label ever...

    High-Strung Daisies

In the imp, this smells pink and sweet. It actually reminds me of cotton candy. I can see why people have mentioned bubblegum. On my skin, this is so girly and lovely. It's like pink cotton candy and a hint of sweet, innocent, slightly clean floral. High-Strung Daisies is cotton candy, a clean sundress, and a handful of pink, sugared flowers - very pretty. I really like High-Strung Daisies, and I find that I like it more and more as it sits on my skin. It's a very charming little scent . It's not an aggressive fragrance, but it does have good staying power; it just sort of dances around me in a light, pink cloud... I kinda love it.

    Aperotos Eros

In the bottle and on my skin at first, I can definitely smell the fir note. It smells very bitter, green, woodsy and slightly medicinal. As it dries down, I get more of a dark musk and sweet, smooth resinous myrrh & benzoin. I sometimes have trouble wearing musk notes (they tend to turn sharp on my skin), but the benzoin and myrrh really round out and calm the musk here. Overall it has a dark brown, warmed, sensual feel.

    Berry Moon 2009

In the bottle... this smells like a hint of blueberry drowning in a sea of sharp, clean, perfumey musk. This seems like it's going to be way too musky for me. It's not a good sort of musky either. It's harsh and chemical smelling. On my skin... umm... berries? Hello? There are no berries anywhere to be found. I get nothing but bad musk from this, from start to finish. I normally amp up honey, berries, and fig notes, but the musk has apparently killed them off in this blend. Yup. This is nothing but a sharp, clean, gross musk on me. It's a little bit like hairspray on my skin. Blech. I'm really sorry that I bought two bottles of this, because it's pretty awful. It smells nothing like any of the listed notes.

'Tis The Voice Of The Lobster

Smelling this in the imp, my first thought was "craft store." It's an overwhelming mishmash of sweet, fakey fruit notes with something oddly perfumey and artificial laying over the whole thing. Not good. I think that I'm hating the "musky-weird base." On my skin, this is a sharp, perfumey musk, a fresh spray of orange citrus, and watermelon candy. I love how juicy and realistic the mandarin smells; it's like peeling a fresh orange. The mandarin isn't enough to save this blend for me, though. As this dries down, I'm just getting an overall impression of too many cheap home fragrances crammed into one area. It's all perfumey and artificial smelling on me . Voice of the Lobster started to give me a headache after I had it on for about fifteen minutes, so I had to scrub it off. I had really high hopes for this scent, but it's too perfumey, sickly sweet, and artificial smelling. It smells more like a potpourri scent to me than a personal perfume...

    How Doth the Little Crocodile

:love!: This smells like a mix of a lot of my favorite scents. It's like someone crammed Spooky, Tokyo Stomp, Lump of Coal, and Tombstone together in a bottle with a drop of oakmoss. I get a really rich chocolate brownie, vanilla mint cookies, and an edge of dry cedar and oakmoss. I love foodie scents and I love them even more when they have a unique, earthier side. All of the notes in this blend together sooo well. I love this Little Crocodile. My only complaint is that it fades rather quickly on me (lasts an hour on my skin), but it's definitely full bottle worthy and worth reapplying.

    Against Idleness and Mischief

In the imp, this smells like a soft, slightly herbal-earthy honey. It's a gentle, golden sweetness. On my skin, the honey amps up and freaks out, as it often does on my skin. It instantly becomes cloying, sickly sweet honey with a sharp, almost green grass smell in the background. Thankfully, Against Idleness calms down a lot after about fifteen minutes. This dries down into a soft honeyed vanilla powder with a hint of freshly cut lawn (I'm not sure what note is doing that on my skin, but it's a fresh, slightly green smell). Surprisingly, I'll probably keep my imp of this. I like the gentle, slightly powdery drydown a lot.

    The Sluggard

In the imp, this smells like it has a lot going on. It smells sweet and softly fruity, but also herbal and floral. It's a dark, muddy sort of smell, if that makes sense (doesn't smell like dirt, but just seems dark and muddled). It's weird. On my skin, this reminds me of Eternal, which must be the gardenia. It has that ultra-creamy 'flower milkshake' smell. Gardenia is one of the few floral notes that I actually like, because it goes all creamy and sweet. And it isn't sharp like most florals are on my skin. The Sluggard is tons of creamy, sweet gardenia with a little hint of pear (and it isn't going sickly sweet like most pear notes do on my skin, it actually smells like real pear), with the sweetness calmed down by an awesome, resinous frankincense note. The frankincense comes out more in the drydown, as does the prickly thistle. It really smells like a prickly plant. I kinda love this blend. Creamy gardenia, sweet pear, prickly thistle, and resins make for a really unusual, unique fragrance, but it somehow works for me. I might have to get a full bottle of this.

    Sacrifice

In the bottle, this smells like a sexy, woodsy cologne. There's something that smells like pine, juniper, or cypress in here, making me think of Golden Priapus and The Isle of the Dead. Slightly sharp, piney green, dark, and wooden. I also smell a warm, masculine musk. Of course, there are none of those notes actually listed :/. In any case, it smells manly, outdoorsy, heated, and sensual. On my skin... this smells like a man in a leather saddle, riding his horse through a dry evergreen forest on a hot day, with pine needles crunching underneath him. I also smell a hint of the woodsmoke, but it's not enough to ruin the blend for me at all. As it dries down, the smokiness smells just like gunpowder on me. So, Sacrifice smells like hot, dry pine forest, worn leather, gunpowder, and an overall feel of rugged, manly goodness on me. I like this blend, but I *love* it on my husband, and he loves wearing this type of fragrance. I'm very glad that I took a chance and bought a bottle of this when it was available .

BPAL version of Cool Water Game by Davidoff?

I've never smelled Cool Water Game, so I'm not sure if it's mainly fruity, woodsy, clean, citrussy, or what it might smell like on your fiance... but just based on the listed notes, you might want to look at: *Bruised Violet Compound - violet, red currant, patchouli root, and spanish moss. *Cheshire Cat - grapefruit, red currant, dark musk, roman chamomile, delphinium, and lavender. *Death on a Pale Horse - white musk, mint, lavender, patchouli, vetiver, yuzu, lime, geranium bourbon, sandalwood, and lily. *Lurid - black currant, lavender, white musk, resins, and ozone. *Lysander - lilac musk, tonka, wood violet, lime, myrtle, blackberry leaf, and benzoin. *Oberon - orchid, white musk, bergamot, juniper berry, and patchouli. *Old Scratch - lavender fougere, tonka, amber, rosewood, and patchouli. *Pontarlier - swiss ferns, lilac, black currant, rose, lavender, sugar, and absinthe. *Wilde - gentleman's cologne, patchouli, tonka bean, bergamot, moss, lavender, jasmine, and thyme.

    Sunbird

My poor little Sunbirds got eaten up in the postal system, but they survived. I received the bpal box totally mangled, ripped apart, and crammed into a post office plastic bag with a "sorry we ruined your package" note. Miraculously, the perfume and books were only a bit dusty and no worse off for the wear. Very appropriate. *pets little Sunbird bottles* To me, Sunbird smells similar to The High Priest Not to be Described, both in the bottle and on my skin, though it's less spicy and has less throw. Sunbird is like a warm, glowing, spicy, exotic incense. If I had to guess at the notes, I'd say this has red sandalwood, some spice (cinnamon leaf? I don't get a heavy cinnamon feel from this at all though, maybe nutmeg), sweet, dark incense, a touch of herbs, and a curl of smoke. It's a warm, golden scent on me. It's smoky and a bit ashy without being overwhelming or smelling gross on my skin, and I tend to dislike smoky notes. I think that I wanted this scent to be darker and heavier than it actually is. It's pale, soft, and golden on me. I don't get any patchouli or vetiver from this at all. I'm not wowed by the scent right now, but I love the artwork and the story, and I love anything bird-themed. Still, I'll wear this, and I'm hoping that it gets better for me with age.

The Sailing Stones of Death Valley

Sailing Stones doesn't really smell anything like I thought it would. I expected a dry, hot fragrance, but this smells like aquatics, soapy ozone, and men's cologne on me. It also smells oddly green & herbal for the first few minutes on my skin, before drying down to just a soapy ozone and men's cologne feel. Weird. Smells mainly like soapy (dryer sheets) ozone on me, so whatever is in this isn't playing nice on my skin. This decant is off to my swap pile...

    Boot Hill Room Spray

I really wanted to try this room spray, and I'm so excited that I got a sample of it in my latest Post order (thank you so much BPTP! ). I spritzed Boot Hill all over the decorative pillows in our livingroom, and it smells a lot like Quincey Morris to me at first, if Quincey Morris had some black leather added into his blend. Soft leather, vanilla sweetness, and a touch of serious black leather. Every once in a while, I thought I smelled something like black licorice candy when I first sprayed this. As this dries down, it's all black leather, Quincey Morris, and a sweet, dark spiciness. It's dark, leathery, and masculine, but warm and cozy at the same time, like curling up into the warmth of a man wearing a leather jacket on a chilly fall day. It's a great fall scent, and would smell perfect for Halloween. I love this, and I'm sad that I can't buy more of it.

    Zenobia Bath Oil

In the bottle, this smells like a smooth, cool incense & soft, light wood note (reminds me of Midnight Mass, actually) with a bit of sharp floral to it. I also keep thinking that it smells like it has some beeswax in it for some reason. In the water, this smells like sweet beeswax and incense. I really don't know where my nose is getting the beeswax from. It leaves a soft, sweet incense smell on my skin after the bath. Applied directly on my skin, this is just gorgeous. It has that cool, dark, velvety night sky feel that I got from Midnight Mass. Cool, dark incense and soft wood notes. The amber comes out in the drydown and goes slightly powdery, but even that is kept in check by the resins and woods. I'd wear this one directly on my skin, because it has that exotic, slightly powdery, sweet, dark resins & woods skin scent that I love. It makes me feel sexy and mysterious. Semiramis is still my all-time favorite bath oil ever, but Zenobia can take second place .

What do bottles and labels look like?

Aww, the pumpkin patch labels are always so cute. I love the artwork for Tattie Bogle too...

    Iron Phoenix v2

In the bottle, Iron Phoenix smells like men's cologne. I'll have to echo other reviewers and say that it reminds me of blends like Bed of Nails & Torture Queen. It has that same bright, polished, slightly sweet, clean metallic smell to it. I also thought of Mechanical Phoenix. On my skin, this instantly becomes spicier & warmer. Spicy-clean men's cologne over a soft, brown wood smell. As this dries down, it starts to get slightly smoky on my skin (like snuffed out candle smoke), and I can pick out something of a sweet lemon-like note. The lemon disappears after a while and I'm left with soft woods, candle smoke, and a lingering hint of spicy, exotic, clean men's cologne. It smells really sexy on me. I'll definitely be keeping my bottle of Iron Phoenix. I like this one a lot. ETA: I wound up selling this bottle recently, as it was starting to get sharper and muskier smelling with age. Really musky, dry, sharp, clean-metallic men's cologne. Very dry and harsh smelling.

The Ghosts of the Arroyo Seco Bridge

In the bottle and on my skin, this is pretty much just a soapy-fresh aquatic with hints of a green, sweet floral (reminds me of lily) and something herbal. It’s a cool scent on my skin for the first 15 minutes or so, which makes me think of mint without smelling outright minty. As this dries down, it smells like a fancy, green, herbal soap & a spritz of sharp floral perfume. It seems sort of mellow, light, and soft, and then every once in a while I smell a bite of sharpness. All in all, this isn't a favorite for me, but I don't tend to like aquatics or herbal smells. At least it's not strong enough on me to give me a headache or anything.
  24. Little Bird

    Aswang v1

I was hoping that this would be a tropical, green sort of smell with some banana added in. Aswang v1 goes pretty sharp and perfumey on me, though. I get a burst of banana candy type smell for the first five minutes or so on my skin, and then this dissolves into something like a mix of men's aquatic cologne and musky white floral drugstore perfume. Bleh. Every once in a while, I can pick out something sweet & fruity, but it's not enough to save this blend for me...
  25. Little Bird

    Kinnabari v4

In the bottle, this smells like spicy cedar and red clay. Very interesting. On my skin, this smells like dry cedar chips, a hint of spearmint, and a hint of red clay. As it dries down, the red clay smell is stronger. It smells slick to me somehow, like slipping on wet red clay. It makes me think of earth, forests, and caves (and dinosaurs - I am strange, lol). After a half hour, this has morphed into a more a dry earth scent, and I don't pick up anything like spearmint anymore either. It still smells like red earth, though, and it's a very unique smell. I find it very comforting. I really love this. It smells like red earth and ancient, wonderful things...
