Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils
Siberia replied to friendthegirl's topic in BPAL FAQs
I had a strong reaction to Blood, including a metallic taste in my mouth, mild headache, and most strangely, it made my hands ache severely when I applied it to my wrists, even after I washed it off. I mostly liked the scent, but there was a faint "ashtray" note that I also get from the snake-oil derived oils, Boomslang and Green Tree Viper. The snakes don't cause an allergic reaction other than the unpleasant note, however. Does anyone have an idea what the common note between Blood and snake oil might be? Or an idea what the allergic note in blood is? It might be dragon's blood, although I used to burn dragon's blood resin as incense and never had a problem with it then... Thanks! -
In the vial and wet, this is a very bright, juicy fruity scent - mostly raspberries. It smells like sweet tarts when it dries. It's too candy-like for me.

This is the second snake pit blend I've tried, the first being green tree viper. I'm guessing from the results I've had that snake oil does not like me at all, even though I haven't tried it. I get a very strong tobacco scent from each of them. I really want to love Boomslang and I'll try it again. In the bottle: deep, dark, chocolate. On me, wet: Chocolate covered cigar, anyone? The cigar scent is stronger than with the Green Tree Viper (vanilla cigar, anyone? anyone?) Dry, later: The cigar-y scent is still there but mellower, and the chocolate is stronger. I'll try with a scent locket. I am determined to love this and Green Tree Viper and I won't stop until they love me, too.

I would use No. 93 Engine for Dumbledore's Office. The smells of wood, beeswax, and a hint of incense do remind me of all of the delicate and incomprehensible contraptions he has there. -
In the bottle and wet, this is awesome: the first time I smelled it, I imagined exotic fruits covered in pastel rock sugar and fairy spices. I can actually smell the sugar, sweet fruits, and a field of fresh flowers. If it would stay like this, it would be exquisite. Unfortunately my skin turns this extraordinary thing into stink. Dry, it settles down first into a soapy perfume scent - the soap feel of it is so strong, that I can actually feel it in the back of my throat, as if I had tasted soap. The scent of this wet is so amazing that I'm not willing to part with it, though - I am holding out for a Gaiman scent locket to try this with.

This is really good. In fall I hunt for mushrooms for fun, and this scent reminds me of being in an old growth oregon forest, picking chanterelles in the deep humus of soil and evergeen needles on the forest floor. I agree with previous reviews that there is the faintest hint of coconut in the wet phase. I don't get a whole lot of the fungus smell (maybe the faintest whiff), but the most beautiful forest and clean humus smell, only sweeter. The soil scent fades first and it settles down into a sweet earthy and slightly evergreen scent. I would say throw is medium and after about 6 hours or so, my skin had mostly eaten it up. One of my favorites so far.

Smells like lemons and honey. I have never noticed that green tea has any particular scent, and I guess I'm not getting one here, either. It's a nice, fresh, summery scent. I would recommend this to anyone who loves lemon.

Grog (bewitching brews) smells just like butterscotch and is how I imagine butterbeer would smell. -
In the bottle and wet, the first whiff is sweet, wet earth, like the saturated black silt left behind when the Nile floods. There is a lot of sweetness from the myrrh and balsam, and a hint of something fresh and aquatic over the top of everything. As this dries, I lose the earth and aquatic notes, and am left with a warm, sweet scent that I am guessing is a combination of myrrh and balsam. I think this would be a nice everyday scent for someone who likes to smell warm and sweet, and a little spicy.

I love the scent of fir, so this is wonderful. It is almost all a big, fruity and sweet fir scent, with a bit of earth underneath. The earth is very understated, but enough to invoke this oil's namesake. Try this if you love fir.

This is really pretty! I don't really know enough about the notes to recognize them individually. I would say this is floral and woody. There is a light, almost buttery-smoky, wood scent that keeps the florals from becoming overwhelming. Dry, there seem to be two "layers" of scent, with the lighter, woody, note floating over the deeper floral scent. The layering does seem evocative of smoke, even if it doesn't actually smell smoky. Later on, I lose the layered sensation, and it settles into a lightly sweet musk. Lovely!

This had a strong floral - musk scent in the bottle. On, the peach and musk come forward in a nice balance. The peach seems to predominate, but it has a fuzzy quality from the musk. Very nice! I think throw is light and wearing time is not too long. Could probably be applied a little more heavily than some of the other oils.

In the bottle, this smells very sweet, with something a little dark. I smell molasses, brown sugar, and something a little buttery, like caramel corn. On, the patchouli comes forward, with a little vanilla and something fruity, probably the red currant. It smells a little head shop-y, like those incense cones that my mom used to buy in the 80's. It's definitely a sweet, herbal, patchouli smell. I rather like it. I applied sparingly, throw seems medium-light. I think the patchouli scent will linger for quite a while.

I got this today, and it's my favorite BPAL so far! In the bottle: At first I thought this was a dark brown oil, but now I see the oil is light with some dark brown particles that need to be rubbed into the skin. This smells strongly of the deepest, darkest chocolate imaginable - like a bottomless well of chocolate - and maybe a little coffee? It's definitely a very dark smell. Wet: Cinnamon, chocolate, and just a hint of maize, like tamale dough. It smells like Mexican hot chocolate and tamales. Dry: This mellows into a fruity, complex, chocolate scent for me - the cinnamon faded out completely. I'd say throw is light and I will put this on a bit more heavily than some of the others. I'm going to order another bottle of this because it is made of awesome.

Blood rose was a very fruity and sweet rose in the imp, and on me. It did not really change from wet to dry, and while the scent eventually faded, it did not change very much. It finished sweet, fruity, and a little powdery.

This is probably going to sound odd, but I don't get any mint from this. I get vanilla and . . . . tobacco. Yep, I smell like an old-fashioned tobacco shop. And so does my office - maybe it's a fougere? It's not an unpleasant smell - I've always enjoyed the smell of tobacco shops, but it's a weird thing for me to smell like. Not sure what to do with this one - maybe I'll try it in a scent locket.

Hi, this is my first post and I'm new to BPAL. My favorite perfume of all time is Bulgari Blu or Blv. I'm not good at picking apart frangrances, but it's described as "This icy-hot fragrance for the frankly feminine female combines surprisingly chilly notes with warm chords reflecting her passion. Icy vibrations of ginger are unconventionally mixed with the freshness of wisteria, intensity of musk and depth of sandalwood on a feminine base of flax flower and warm vanilla." Any recommendations for a BPAL that has the same icy-hot mood and some of the components ETA: sorry I noticed there is a thread where this should have gone, but I don't now how to move my post.
