Best BPALs for SUMMER - is it hot, sweltering, sticky outside?
theasylph replied to Donnababe's topic in Recommendations
As the weather gets warmer I anticipate wearing : Torture Queen, Et Lux Fuit, and Penis Admiration. I think Penis Admiration spells SO pretty/floral/springy. I love the clean-ness of Torture Queen. Et Lux Fuit smells just like sunflower pollen to me... slightly sweet and spicy. I'm debating on Embalming Fluid or Carnaval Diabolique too. oh, I so look forward to summer. -
Bliss on me smells like a true milk chocolate candy bar, not dark cocoa or but straight MOR hersheys kiss. It's very high on the milk or butter it seems. Bliss seems to stick around for a short time. At first I smelled like I had gone tanning out in the sun with hershey's kisses placed all over me. Then in 15 minutes time, bliss turned into a chocolate ovaltine-like powder on my skin. The sweet powdery milk note in here makes me slightlly nauseous and want to scrub. I think I'm more of a dark cocoa kind of girl.

I tried hanging gardens today and it smells very lush and purple to me.

Starts out with a real Kapow from the citrus - smells like a lemon lime mix. Then she starts to get quite dusty and mellow, sweet and tart. This reminds me of a close cousin to Jezebel which I got an insane amount of dusty book nostalgia from. The sweet dusty honey then turns sort of powdery. In the end I feel that the drydown is sort of sour and then fades to a dusty honey baby powder. I think some people will love and adore this. I just like it.... I totally smell the Fruit Loops similarity! LOL.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume
theasylph replied to Ina Garten Davita's topic in Recommendations
Haven't tried this one either, but I hate seeing people not get suggestions! A search of the forum turned up only one comparison: La Mort Qui Danse. It's definitely peppery, and I also got a light floral and something slightly green, and it's very unique (translation: you may hate it ). Have you tried that one yet? Has anything you've tried come close, except "xyz"? Unfortunately nothing I have ever tried has compared to it. There's a perfume called Etro Etra that is supposed to be similar but to a lesser degree of awesome than Le Feu. La Mort Qui Danse will be added to my "imps to try list" sounds very promising. Thanks for the recommendation! -
Just smelled Torture Queen - White amber, vanilla musk, white tea, ambergris, gardenia, and chrome I am considering this for myself or my boyfriend very unisex and very very nice. Also - Embalming Fluid and Ded Moroz i think would be nice on a man.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

I tried Torture Queen today and it reminded me (and a number of other reviewers) of CK1, also reminds me of Carolina Herreras 212 for men. Nice clean fresh musk and white gardenia. Now if I could only find a scent that smells like Le Feu D'issey by Issey Miyake. Hopelessly discontinued and 100$ or more for a bottle. SHEEZ. It is SO good. Has anyone smelled this? It's unlike any other mainstream frags out there which is probably why it's now discontinued. Notes are: Top Notes: Rose, lily, coriander leaf, pepper Heart Notes: Amber Base Notes: Guaiac wood, benzoin, amber it's a spicey floral w/ a wood base. -
That's funny everyone else is getting a ck1 scent memory from this too, this also reminds me a little of Carolina Herrera 212 for men. This is so much better though. MMMM. It smells like very clean fresh musk at first. Then sweetens with some vanilla sweetness. I get such a clean crisp feeling from this blend. As other posters before have said it does scream the color of white which I really love about it. This has more of an actual mens cologne scent than any Bpal blend I've smelled yet but it's very beautiful. I'm wondering if the chrome note makes it so. I think I love the labs metal notes. I can't stop smelling my wrist now. I think I have to push this on my bf for real.

At first this smells dirty, in a good way. Like warm dirt and sun and roots. Then it smells a little herby, a little floral, a little soapy. I was thinking maybe clary sage, ylang ylang, dirty ginger and white musk? I definately think of the color white when I smell this. So I couldn't help to look up High John the Conqueror and it turns out that it's a root relative to morning glory and sweet potato. It's used in many attracting blends. This blend reminds me ALOT of this voodoo love oil I got from New Orleans. While it's definitely not my favorite smell to wear, it sort of reminds me of cleaning agents, I still love the feeling I get when I smell this. Maybe it's the nostalgia of the scent association or maybe this is good mojo.

When I first tried this on I was struck by the yumminess of the well rounded vanilla bean mixed with the subdued lavender. I got mental images of vanilla bean specks in a lavender ice cream. It was something earthquakingly magical and soothing. I imagine this as an evening blend for that hour of blue after the sun goes down. The dry down of the musks and amber are beeeutiful and sweeter than the initial lavender vanilla combo. I've found that the carnation comes in around the dry down and compliments the musk with a slight spice. At first I got little or no rose in this blend but for some reason tonight I smell a whole lot of rose taking over. I hope I'm just having a whack chemistry day and that rose doesn't take over during the aging process or I may have to kick it to the swap pile. Lab rose turns tangy and metallic like a copper penny on me. .poop. I'm really hoping that the vanilla flourishes during the dry down and the rose remains mellow. If so this will be much loved.

I don't really get the fruitiness on my skin from this blend. I get a musky spicy christmas candle or cinnamon potpourri as some have said. I can't get past that scent association. Too bad.

In the bottle this smells like mosses and woods. It smells thick and lush. On the skin: I smell mosses in the foreground of a green woodland with a field of lush blooming flowers in the background. The oakmoss really stands out. The flowers are not to sweet and this allows the woody resins to really bloom on your skin because they are not overpowered. The ambergris is gorgeous. This is really beautiful and hard to describe. It's so well mixed that it becomes an animal (or a butterfly ) all it's own. I see how people are comparing it to more traditional perfumery, it has a lot going on and seems quite structured. To me this still smells untamed and mysterious. The name is very appropriate. Update as of 12/1/09 : My blend has morphed! Something has taken over in these past months. I smell more mossy, powdery woods and less lush blossoming woodlands. It's gotten dryer and has more of an 'old school perfume' vibe. It seems like the gardenia and orchid have been overshadowed by this blends other big contenders. Awww what a bummer.

In the bottle it smells like a fresh little rosebud covered in dew. On my skin at first application I smell a true medium bodied rose. I imagine a dark red rose. I smell it's leaves and it's thorns. It smells almost dirty and deep. As it sits more it becomes even dirtier and maybe even citrus smelling. I realise now that I'm smelling a lotta rose geranium coming out of this blend. Maybe even geranium bourbon... It's so wierd. At first I thought the rose geranium was lemongrass because it's a little sharp, citrusy and tangy. It seems to take over the blend and kind of turn it sour. At the end it turns a little soapy and slightly incensey. This is not my favorite rose for sure.

mmm mmm! This smells SO GOOD. At first all I get is an impressive almost boozey vanilla. Then a little bit of butter... but not as much as Sugar Cookie. Now I smell the crust of the cake. When it calms down it smells like a very rich vanilla cake or scone with some mild spices, topped with frosting and berries. The currants take backseat to the vanilla on me. I do want to eat myself. I really do...

MVJBA: Summer Summoning Spectacular
theasylph replied to wl552's topic in Black Phoenix Trading Post
I tried to guess the notes blindly on this one. I guessed: summer (ha!), sun, sunflower, hay, dandelion, grass, carnation, spicey dry flowers, fig?, honey, vanilla, patchouli At least I got the dry planty thing right, and maybe incense-y patchouli? HA. Trying to train your nose is really comical w/ BPAL. The notes are SO varied! I would never have thought of coffee but I can smell it now faintly. It reminds me of a cafe latte though, not black coffee. I like this. it's kinda wierd and so well balanced. smells rich and full bodied. mellows out to be really nice and incensey. I'd hunt some down! smells like an indian summer. OOh now I want pancakes. -
in the bottle I smelled mostly a slightly sweet sharp citrus. I didn't read the notes before I put it on. So my nose was pretty confused because every time I smelled my wrist it seemed to morph. I wrote down " fresh citrus, laundry, autumnal, bees wax". pshhh, not quite. Mostly what I smelled was a magical lush but tart citrus. Not too tart, not too sweet. The chocolate doesn't show up on my skin as much as the cherry and orange. I do wish it stuck around a little longer. It seemed to fade after a coupla hours but I think I'll just have to wear more of it. I think this is my first BPAL love. aww. BTW, the moment I put this on my boyfriend expressed a great liking of it. Bonus points.

A very strong milk chocolate and peanut butter combo. Thick and syprupy smelling at first. Then dry roasted peanuts become prominent and they smell kinda rancid. I smell a little coconut too, like the first reviewer. I also smell that plastic 'My little pony' scent. After the drydown it reminds me a lot of candy fluff dusting powder by lush. Whew, this is too much for me.

Biblical witch, priestess of Astarte, and general troublemaker. A true role model for today’s upwardly mobile Modern Woman. A gloriously decadent blend of honey, roses, orange blossom and sandalwood. in the bottle it smelled like dusty books and creamsicle. Then on my skin it came really alive and vibrant for 20 minutes to half an hour. Intoxicating. Maybe that was the honey that kept things together so nicely? It reminded me of a bouquet of a bouquet of flowers in a dusty bookstore. Roses and Dust. Not unpleasant but curious... but when the honey element dried out it was powdery dried out old flowers and dank musty books. I loved it AND hated it. I would love to visit a place that smells like that but I would hate to smell like that. Oh well..
