Best BPALs for SUMMER - is it hot, sweltering, sticky outside?
bonny replied to Donnababe's topic in Recommendations
i've been getting a lot of mileage out of baobhan sith, i love grapefruit in the summer. fae is an old summer standby, and i've JUST started to be able to wear my antikythera mechanism, it's aged enough, so that an black lace are my summer creamy scents. black lace doesn't really count maybe, because i wear it year round regardless of 'appropriate' weather -

for some reason i tend to reach for samhain when i need comfort- i think it really does smell like autumn and the onset of nostalgia-steeped holidays. mme moriarty is another one. just got a hold of a decant of comforting plush companion, and i must say it IS. comforting, that is. if i wasn't so worried about hoarding the small amount i have, i'd probably slather it when i got upset. -
dian's bud was a really dark, wet, lush green on me. think a mass of rain-soaked, heavy greenery, ALMOST on the edge of rotting but not quite.

The absolute darkest scents? dark, ghostly, haunting, scary,

nosferatu is, understandably, a super creepy scent. like something's crawling out of freshly-turned earth, RIGHT NOW. -
"sparkly" is the perfect word for this. i'd had this imp forever and forgotten the notes, so i was astounded when both grape and pear showed up on the list- neither are notes i normally go for but this is just beautiful. it's... it's... do you remember the little mermaid? that last scene where ariel comes out of the sea in that perfectly draped dress made of sparkles? this is what that dress smelled like. super feminine, completely romantic. i feel like this would be an awesome introduction to bpal for chicks who normally wear commercial florals- it's not weird, but fantastically different.

weird. this is smelling to me EXACTLY like one of the black helicopter scents, i THINK it's staged moon landing- i can sorta see it, since both have been described as fuzzy or dusty, but the only note they seem to have in common is the vanilla. mostly vanilla cake notes here with a slight fruity rose. it's a little more foody and a little less snuggly than i was anticipating, but i'm still enjoying it.

a deep purple scent to me- almost black- womanly, heady. this is something worn by a woman who knows her power and apologizes to no one. SUPER sexy, a bit much for daytime wear, maybe, but a major favorite nighttime oil for me. very reminiscent of a traditional floral, but darkly resinous and mossy. i LOVE this. have a bottle, could go for a backup.

this is a nice, spicy buttery ambery almond instead of the sharp cherry that I usually get from almond. aged bastet is truy marvelous, it doesn't last long on me fresh but give it eight months or so and yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. a very warm golden scent. LOVE this.

i expected to see lots of reviews comparing this to womb furie, but maybe i am just weird. this is almost EXACTLY womb furie on me, but like a younger, sweeter, quieter sister to WF. it's lacking the in-your-face heaviness of the other, it's a little more appropriate for work wear or family wear. golden spicy honey loveliness:)

#314- i'm so thrilled to have recieved this in a swap! in the bottle- smells a lot like i remember my strawberry shortcake dolls smelling. creamy, vanilla-strawberry-plastic. on- still slightly plasticky, but that usually fades with age. the strawberry is still here but tempered by something creamy and slightly spicy, if I had to guess I'd say carnation? as it dries the spicy comes out a little more and darkens the strawberry. i love, love this and i think it will only get better

i'm a bit confused because i can't smell this at all. a very faint sweetness coming from the bottle if i practically stick my nose in it, but after slathering it on an arm- nothing. at all. eta: i must revise! i tried this straight out of the mailbox and maybe it seperated or something, but i tried it after rolling it around and letting it cool down and now it's a lovely, very soft, coconut-tinged peach with a light grounding of vetiver. after a few hours there's just a bit of the orchid. this is EXACTLY what i wanted common jezebel to be. i will now stop staring mopily at my decant of C. jezebel:wub:

i expected to like this a lot more than i did the first time- but i'm expecting it to get better. right now my bottle smells 'like a strudel' according to dr. boyfriend and just like a faint, powdered-sugar vanilla on me. i got no cardamom or tonka which are usually great notes for me- this faded quickly and just wasn't that awesome. it was pleasant, but didn't make me want to cuddle myself like the harp or mouse's long sad tale. it might age in to something nicer, so i'll keep it around for now.
-
i had high hopes for this, as a lot of scents that don't work out on most people are lovely on me (yes you milk moon) but i had a problem with the vetiver too. I don't have a lot of this note around so I don't know what'll happen, but I'm hoping it'll age out- I WANT to want a bottle. I almost like this, but the vetiver is way strong and doing sort of a chemical/hairspray thing? but if i can ignore that, there's a lovely apricot/coconutiness there. i'm gonna open this decant again just before the butterflies come down. crossing my fingers for this.

hmmm i'm feeling cthulu in love, antikythera mechanism (it's got this sharpness but when you give it a few minutes there's a lovely sweetness underneath) and maybe maenad. i'll play! i was an art major, but only because i didn't know what i really wanted to do, and i've always loved art- i just don't want to do it for a living. i'm afraid it will make me not love it as much. i bartend and make jewelry on the side, very inspired by steampunk/victorian styles with a lot of filigree and laciness; lots of rough edges meeting soft curves. i read tons of fantasy and sci fi, my favorite movies are the last unicorn and the life aquatic. i'm extremely quiet and shy until i get used to people; at work or with people who know me well i tend to be very silly and sarcastic. i'm always thinking of weird random questions and irrelevant observations. i curse like a sailor but i'm super emotional and high strung. i like animals a lot more than people and dote unendingly on my four dogs.
-
oh, god. seriously, if you are on the fence about this one, BUY IT, because people like me will snatch up your unloved bottles for backups in no time. this made it's way to my top five instantly. it's a cousin of mouse's long and sad tale, with the amber and vanilla, but where mouse's is all soft sweetness this is a little more alluring, a bit more sophisticated and deep. mostly creamy vanilla and powdery amber up close, but as i move around i get these amaing spicy wafts of the tiare and cardamom. the floral note is almost reminding me of carnation? i wish it lasted a but longer but i have absolutely no problem slathering and reapplying this. this is going to age amazingly, but it's already gorgeous. i often have trouble with 'new' vanilla (i'm talking to you, brand new black lace) but this didn't go plasticky or weird on me at all- it's wearable right away, and i'm so glad. I LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE THIS.

not a big morpher on me, perhaps i get a bit more of the tea in the imp- on me it's wonderful tangy grapefruit softened by lavender. the lavender doesn't cut out the bite all together, it's still a nice crisp grapefuit, but there's no bitterness, and this is defenitely a happy scent. bottle for me.
-
oh, my god. i love this. i LOVE THIS. spicy carnation is what i pick out most of all, and there's something just slighty foody-but-not, and 'wooly wine' is the perfect description of the base. this stays creamy and spicy on me, it's not too overly sexy to wear during the day but perfectly acceptable to wear out at night. this is my favorite bpal and the bottle i reach for most often. if this was being discontinued i would cry, hoard, and cry some more. eta: forgot to mention in my love fest that this last extremely well on me as stays fairly strong. i'd day if i want to wear it all day long i might reapply once.
-
baaahhh this is gorgeous! if i had to pick one bottle from the luper/shunga update to buy, this might be it. the notes blend really, really nicely on my skin- i can pick out the tobacco, sweetened a good bit by the honey and vanilla. i LOVE tobacco notes- i'm a kentucky girl and my uncle was one of the last independant tobacco farmers in the area, and the tobacco note here is so much like walking through his cutting/drying room- this is tobacco straight from the ground, still with a bit of green wetness to it. SO nice and not at all 'biting' like the one in antikythera mechanism, though i love that one too- if AM made you think tobacco wasn't for you, try this before giving it up all together. a few hours later this has faded to a faint honey/mandarin sweetness, but cents usually last a lot longer in cleavage than on my arms, which is where i tested.

the '10 version, in imp: yep, drunken snake oil, a little less spicy and more sweet. the musk reminds me of the musk in devil's night, which i guess makes sense as they are both described as 'swarthy.' must remember to pick up all scents with swarthy musk in description! on me, the sweet booziness hangs out for a few minutes before going totally rubbery. indeed, like condoms and vinyl sheets-rubbery. buuuut i have high hopes for this as it ages! i'll keep it around.

Lilac, ho wood, smoky vanilla, galbanum, and tonka. wah. this is GREAT in the imp. very unique- i get a bit of floral/wood, mostly tonka and smoky vanilla. on me it's screaming, headache-inducing lilac with a hint of promising vanilla in the background. i'll put this away for a few months and hope that the other notes team up and murder the lilac.

The embodiment of Victorian funereal elegance. A delicate sugar-spun vanilla cream cotton, stained by tobacco and incense smoke, Indian musk, and drops of cognac. i have a decant and a bottle, both from the forums- my decant is a gorgeous, smoky dark vanilla. no morping on skin, wear length is decent. can see where it might come off as a little 'cologne'-y from the alcohol note but this is amazing on me. not one to wear to grandma's house. this is for sitting in a dimly lit bar playing the femme fatale. on the other hand.... i hate to say it, but my bottle is actually almost horrible. it's similar to the vanilla-scented plastic i got from snow white, or maybe a vanilla scratch n sniff sticker. i'm desperate to believe the bottle will age in to smelling like my decant but i'm also terrified it's the other way around

Best BPALs for SUMMER - is it hot, sweltering, sticky outside?
bonny replied to Donnababe's topic in Recommendations
black pearl is far and away my favorite summer scent, or for that matter my favorite summer-memories scent- i also wear it when the winter cold is really getting me down and i need to remind myself that it won't last forever. it's coconutty enough to remind me of tropical beaches and drinks with paper umbrellas, but the iris and musk keep it from being too sunscreenish. -
well, i wasn't scared of this smelling like cat pee until i read this thread i'll have to wait until doctor boyfriend gets home and ask him to huff me, but to my nose this is just lovely. it's really, really well blended- if i didn't look at the notes i MIGHT have picked out orange but they just waft up seamlessly. i can pick out a bit of the berry but it's not screaming berry, it's just adding a lower end to what might otherwise be a somewhat high-pitched blend for me. i would NEVER have picked this out for myself but i am so grateful to have recieved a frottle in a recent forum sale! overall this is a fairly light but not insubstantial scent, fruity but not overly sweet, sexy but in a comfortable way, not a COME GET ME NOW scent.
-
this was immediately familiar and it took me a while to figure out what it smelled like that i already wore a lot- it's queen alice! without looking at the notes there's the same warm creaminess with a little but of dark fruit, maybe wine, and just a hint of spice. i don't get as much depth or wear length with this, though, i'm going to slather sometime this week and see how it plays out.

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils

eeek had my first actual physical pain resulting from bpal today:/ tested a bit on tarot: the star in my elbows and was immediately hit with a stinging pain intense enough that i half-ran for the bathroom to wash it off! doesn't seem to be anything too crazy as far as notes go, looking at reviews i'm seeing all lime, coconut, mint all of which i have worn with no problem. get out of here, imp!
