Beanman & Beanwoman Prepare to Attack the Vagina
plainjean replied to capnlizaveta's topic in Lupercalia
I got this as a frimp in a forum purchase. And I must say, that person must be psychic. I've been looking for a good coconut blend, but something that didn't smell all preteen and beachy. THIS. THIS IS IT. I, personally, would love to know what sunscreen you all are using, because this smells NOTHING like sunscreen to me. On me, it's pure, creamy, coconutty perfection, with a bit of a salty vibe (probably due to the ambergris) and some non-cloying floral thrown in. It doesn't have that weird, faux-tropical feeling I get with most coconut perfume and sunscreen. I agree with the reviewer who said it reminded them of white skin and tissue paper. Perfectly clean, soft skin and slightly crumpled (but beautifully crumpled, if that makes sense, haha) white tissue paper. This scent is seductive, but totally understated. That's not to say it has no lasting power or throw, though! It definitely has both. I put on a little bit last night before I went to bed, and I was still catching little wafts of coconut this morning. And as far as throw goes, I just put on two little drops: one on the back of my hand and one on my wrist, and it's really strong. Beanpeople, I love you so much. -
Chaos Theory VI: Recursive Self-Similarity v5
plainjean replied to MCS4096's topic in Limited Editions
#207 In the decant, it's very much melon. Sort of a mix of watermelon and honeydew, with a bit of a perfumey air, probably due to the amber. When wet, it's very much the same and I quite like it. The thought that came into my head was, "This would be perfect for summer." But then..THEN. It turns into generic bathroom cleaner, possibly pine scented. I had such high hopes for you, #207! Alas. To the swaps pile you go! -
The scent that immediately popped into my mind was Miskatonic University. Maybe Shub-Niggurath, also. And perhaps you should give Samhain a go!

I was almost 100 percent sure this would be excellent on me. I can do incense, currant, and cake really well. I figured this would be like an incense-y Eat Me, which is one of my favorites. In the bottle, it's very much like Eat Me, but a little dustier and smokier. Wet, it smoothes out quite a bit, though something odd is happening that makes it smell a bit..strange. Not bad, just different. I'm not quite sure how to explain it. Once dry, however, it's lovely. Soft, smoky, cake-y, currant-y..it's like small cakes floating in a swirl of incense smoke. Beautiful. It's very faint, and there's not much throw, but you know what? I'm okay with that. It's a very intimate, comforting scent, and I'm so happy I have a bottle. ETA: One month later, and it just doesn't work for me anymore. Now it's really sharp, kind of sour incense with a bit of cake in the background. Sigh.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume
plainjean replied to Ina Garten Davita's topic in Recommendations
I've never smelled Egyptian Goddess, but it sounds like Bastet (Luxuriant amber, warm Egyptian musk, fierce saffron and soft myrrh, almond, cardamom and golden lotus), Salomé (Exotic and lush, brimming with grace and viciousness: almond with star jasmine, oakmoss, red sandalwood and Egyptian musk), and possibly Mr. Ibis (Papyrus, vanilla flower, Egyptian musk, African musk, aloe ferox, white sandalwood) might be similar, or at least in the same scent family. I've only tried Bastet out of those three, and it's truly beautiful. -
Leonine amber, tanned hides, clove, and clary sage. This scent is so, so beautiful. It's a soft, golden suede with just a hint of clove, if I really sniff my wrist. On me, it turns into this gorgeous skin scent, light but long lasting. I put it on at about 2:00 in the afternoon, and I was still catching whiffs of it at 7:00 that night. It's such a gorgeous blend, and it makes me feel confident and really quite pretty when I wear it. It's warm and comforting, and I'm so glad I have a bottle making its way to me soon. It will be lovely in the cooler months. Though today, when it was 90+ degrees and extremely humid, it blossomed! I think I will be wearing this one year-round.

Where is my order? What is Click N Ship? How long does this take?
plainjean replied to Snow White's topic in BPAL FAQs
Ooooh, I see. Thanks.~ Has anyone ever had a click 'n' ship that didn't update much? I received my C n S notification last week Friday, but the message has not been updated at all - says the post office has been directed to expect the package. I know it was a Labor Day weekend...will they update it when it has shipped, or when it is delivered, or not at all because of government budget cuts preventing employees from working in the offices...?! lol I'm very eager to try these out, as a newbie, so I'm DYING over here!! CnS's hardly ever update. That's not the fault of the lab, but rather USPS. Also, since it was a holiday weekend, post offices were closed. In my experience, the CnS should update when the package gets into your area. -
I find Lyonesse to be a really true vanilla scent. It has a little bit of muskiness, but it's quite nice. That's on me, though! Your results may vary.

Lush to BPAL scent comparisons (BNever included too)
plainjean replied to Vanilla's topic in Recommendations
I've found that Alice goes really well with LUSH's 13 Soap (Unlucky for Dirt). -
This is so very, very bizarre. In the imp, it's all melon. Honeydew, I believe. If I really concentrate on it, I get the tobacco and the juniper. When wet, it's very much the same. Heavy on the melon, with a bit of chili pepper coming through, and a dirtiness from the cigar tobacco. There's a bit of a cold wood feel to it, too. Like pine. Could this be the gin? I've never smelled gin, so I really don't know. Dry, it's a very clean melon with slightly smoky undertones. If I stick my nose to my hand (where I have applied it), I can smell the tobacco, which is definitely more of a raw tobacco scent. Kind of planty. It's faint, but not so faint that it doesn't have any throw. It's very unobtrusive. It's excellent to have in my arsenal for days like today, when it's swelteringly hot. I really like it! Not quite sure if it's bottle-worthy though. Maybe next summer.

This is so, so good. It makes me want to gnaw on my arm. (But I won't, because I know that BPAL is not for eating!) It smells like pretty little petit fours with pretty pink pastel vanilla frosting and covered in currants. It's a dry white cake, but it's delicious. Honestly, there's not much more to say about it. It's pretty and soft, it's delicious, it's warm and comforting, and I need a full bottle.

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?
plainjean replied to Absinthe's topic in Recommendations
I have Gypsy (LE) on my arm and Miskatonic University (GC) on my hand, and, now that they have dried and settled a bit, they smell almost exactly the same. I have no idea why this is, since they don't have any notes in common, and I know the scents aren't overlapping since they're pretty far apart. Bizarre. ETA: I think something must have gone crazy that day..because I tried them again, a little over a month later, and not similar at all. Oh, skin chemistry! You go so wonky sometimes! -
Hrm. I don't quite know what to make of this! It's sweet, but it has a sharpness to it. I understand the comparisons to baby formula, but the scent of baby formula makes me gag, and Milk Moon does not. I can smell the fig, which I really like, and I do get that pineapple feel that others are getting. I'm very happy that the honey is behaving, but I figured it would since I get along quite well with honey. For me, it dries to Defututa with milk. I think I like it? Maybe? I'll hold onto my decant for now. ETA: Okay..it's gone a bit odd now. I really don't know what to think of this! It's kind of frustrating, how confusing this is. I think I'll hold onto it for a while, though, and see if maybe layering it with something will improve it.

This is a review for Punkie Night 2010. In the bottle, it feels like an apple orchard. It's mostly apple, but these apples are still attached to the trees. Some of the apples are still in blossom form. I agree with London: There is a very windy feel to this, as if a brisk Autumn wind was blowing through the apple trees, rustling the leaves. It's not cold, but it's not warm. It's very much an Autumn feel. On, it's beautiful, crisp, juicy, cold red apples. Cold, not in a weather-sense of the word. These are the apples from that orchard in the bottle, the apples hanging on the trees with the wind and cool Autumn weather surrounding them. I get the cranberry, which is very fresh and tart. After a bit, I get more of the blossoms and the bark from the orchard again. Overall, this is absolutely spectacular. I can imagine myself in this orchard, surrounded by these trees, reaching up and pulling one of these shiny red apples off of a branch and biting into it.

This is so beautiful. In the vial it's an effervescent, playful sort of scent. But not playful in the "young" sense of the word. This is like forest nymphs with laughs like bells, running through the forest barefoot and naked, their long hair trailing behind them. It smells of a honeyed berry wine, though it's definitely a wine with a very low alcohol content. On the skin the dandelions poke through a bit, but they are definitely in the wine, not growing in a field. They add a faintly floral but herbal grounding aspect to what could be a very overpoweringly fruity scent. I will need a full bottle of this for sure!

Oh..this is heavenly. In the bottle, it's very rounded, the honey and dark chocolate and tobacco all standing out but complimenting each other beautifully. Once on, it's a wonderful spicy mint chocolate. After it has dried, it turns into a smoky, honeyed, spicy dark chocolate with a hint of berry. The tobacco in this reminds me of the tobacco in The Antikythera Mechanism, which is one of my favorite blends. Overall, I took a gamble buying this, since I didn't know which notes really worked for me at the time. Since then I've figured out that pretty much every note in this is a note of win for me, so yeah! I love this!

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?
plainjean replied to Absinthe's topic in Recommendations
Well, this is actually LE to Discontinued, but I thought it still would fit in this thread. Rosy Maple is practically DEAD-ON for Jester. Which makes me ecstatic, since I never got around to ordering Jester, and then it was too late to get it! -
At first I wasn't too sure about this blend. The notes sounded gorgeous, but in the vial it was a bit too fruity for my tastes. And the first time I tried it, it was kind of like a piña colada. But then! I tried it again, several days later, and wow! Everything just blossomed! It turned into this beautiful smoky, honeyed, slightly fruity vanilla that's just so wonderful. It's not overly floral, which I'm perfectly okay with, since florals go a little weird on me most of the time. It's a languid, sexy, relaxed skin scent, and, in a weird way, this is what I imagine a Bollywood film would smell like. Golden, sexy, smoky, exotic, and just really happy. I absolutely adore this, and I will definitely be needing a big bottle.

I got this mainly because I was curious. It wasn't something I'd normally try. Well, now I know I should have trusted my instinct. When I first sniffed this in the vial, I had this sort of reaction: It was so strong that it made me gag a little. It smelled of smoke and barbeque sauce, and something else I couldn't recall. I quickly closed it up again, and put it into the bottom of my imp box. Well...I decided to be brave and try it, just to see if maybe it actually could work. Um. No. I put a very, very tiny amount on the back of my hand, and again: It smells like a campground. Fire pits, bug spray, citronella candles, trees, et cetera. All that, and a little tinge of bacon. No thank you. While I do admit it's a bit better once it gets on my skin, it's still pretty foul.

Is this what you're looking for? If so, it was in the Event Exclusives.

I really wanted to love this one. But wow. In the imp, on my skin, in the air around me..it's pure, dusty tea rose. Very soapy, very "not me." If you can pull off florals, this one would be beautiful on you. It's so pretty, but not for me. Sigh.

I was a bit hesitant to try this one, since I wasn't sure how it'd work on me. I was right to be hesitant. In the imp, this is very, very strong eucalyptus, with a bit of mint and the tiniest hint of violet. The violet was barely perceptible. I was hoping it'd tone down once I got it on, but alas. It didn't. It smelled like dog shampoo. Which is all well and good for a dog, but not so great for me. I mean, yeah, I have a eucalyptus shampoo, but it's not this..harsh. I don't know. I just really didn't dig it. I'll gladly take Violet Ray over Ultraviolet for my violet scent of choice.
-
This is a really lovely violet blend. Honestly, I don't think I would have ever tried violet, in fear that it'd be too floral on me. But I was desperate to try at least one of the Steamworks blends, and this is the first one that caught my eye. In the imp, it's a slightly herbal violet scent. Quite nice, actually. Once it hits my skin, it turns into a sweet, almost candied violet. I really love it! I I'm happy to say I don't get any of the lavender, which I was really worried about. I'm slowly learning that I can't take lavender in huge doses. I noticed a lot of people have compared it to Ultraviolet, so I thought I'd do my own comparison. Ultraviolet is much, much harsher than Violet Ray. On me, Ultraviolet is mostly eucalyptus that is merely softened by the slightest hint of violet. Personally, I prefer Violet Ray. It's smoother, and I feel like the notes work better on me.
