Recommendations for a delicate unisex scent?
lookingglass replied to enfleurage's topic in Recommendations
Katharina is fizzy, slightly floral apricot. -
Call me crazy, but this smells quite a lot like Michael Kors perfume on me: a creamy white floral! I love it, though, and drying down it's definately musky, indolic, but in a sweet, clean rather than salty, way. It's not the swarthy skin musk I know in say, Le Lethe. It's nearly fruity...there's a tanginess like berries or an underipe peach. It's simple yet interesting, and altogether pleasent. Some days we need that in a fragrance!

I've never publicly expressed my love for the Bloody Banister, and find it difficult even now, when I feel compelled to do so. It evokes a very powerful scent memory for me...a haunting banister... Sweet, incensey wood...a nod to classic orientals, but more raw, yet cozy to me in its darkness...leading me down the stairs...

Psychological Horror is the Other Miss Forcible's equally disturbing, less foody sister. Wet, it's musk, musk, musk...soft powdery notes, and skin scents of various levels of cleanliness. On the drydown, it becomes deeper and more complex. I am thinking a bit of rose, maybe a touch of violet, a sweet yet dusty note, and scalpy, creamy orris. It definately has a vintage feel, and I love it!

Yeah, Zombie totallly freaks me out...

I think this is a good dupe for Inez! I don't find this scent heavy or dark. I find it slightly sweet and powdery with a clean, musky finish. Gender neutral, nuzzly, yum.

Yeah...I don't know why all the Banshee Beat freaks aren't just beating down the Lab's door for Goblin. It's very, very close, and truly, I like it better! Goblin is more woody, and less sweet/powdery/weed seeds than Banshee Beat. The patchouli is dark and dank like in my beloved Depraved (yuuuuummy, nasty, freaky stuff!). I thought (fearfully) that the coconut would smell like suntan lotion, or a coconut scented hair product but it does NOT; the black coconut is not a typical one...I wouldn't even guess coconut if I didn't know it was there, I'd truly say black vanilla and benzoin, maybe another resin. Knowing it's there, it's more like the husk instead of the meat or milk of the stuff. Goblin is a dry, dark, woody, slightly sweet, sexy scent. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE eeeeet!!!

WORD! I remember when Beth posted the pic of Lil with the tarantula fascinator on facebook. SO ADORABLE!!! It's got the Boomslang choco/spice thing and the Snake Charmer plumy, sassy thing going on FOR SURE. The hazelnut isn't too nutty...more like Nutella than nuts. The drydown is A-MAAAA-zing, snuggly sandalwood and I would guess some sweet musk, too. Iz LOVEZ eeeeet!

So Below sounds like it should be added to the list, though I haven't tried it. Has Vixen been mentioned? It has now!

While there are a lot of florals listed here, it's the soft musks that steal the show. "Clean" or "scrubbed" patchouli has been trending in the fragrance industry, and this blend does evoke a similar feeling as the popular scents mentioned above; I'll add Lancôme's ' La Vie Est Belle to the list. However, BF&JA is BPAL!, and melts into my skin with much more quality, warmth, and creaminess. The white patchouli is not vampy or earthy (for those who both love and hate patchouli!) , nor is it as woody as Tom Ford's. This scent is pink, sparkling, sweet, soft, and darling.

Wet: Squirting cherry almond, freshly tooled leather, and sweet, almost coconutty jasmine all rush to the front right away, like dom getting ready to bake an almond cream cake with the windows thrown wide open in spring. It's hilariously, bizarrely awesome and just makes me smile. Drying down: almond softens...less cherry...more like soft marzipan...and mingles with the dark vanilla, becoming more creamy, but not too sweet. The leather stays at the forefront, waxy, zingy, and unabashedly LEATHERY. Dry: THERE's the white patchouli! I've been LOOKING for YOU! (She's really why I bought the bottle blind!) Definitely patchouli, but soft and herbal, slightly rooty and indolic, but not really floral...it's hard to tell where the patchouli ends and the floral/wood accord begins, because this is a new BPAL note to me (I've smelled other White Patchoulis, and they've been more woody/floral...less patchouli than this-go figure!). Leather/Wood/Patchouli gather together and grrrowl...smooth and hard. Jasmine is not all cray-cray...she's leaving that job to the LEATHER... just adds a bit of live, delicate warmth. I can imagine smelling like this as I run through a sodden forrest, tearing and soiling the hem of my trailing lace dress, new leather corset laced far too tightly for such a warm day, to an impromptu, and quite mad, tea party. It's a quirky blend of severe and bohemian...grounded and airy...sweet and dank...nature made and human processed. I'm reminded of classic, badassed, leathery perfumes like Bandit, but with a distinctly modern twist. BRAVA! I really, really like this blend, and look forward to getting to know her better. She's a strange one!

The Other Miss Forcible!

I smell DELICIOUS, in a dark and brooding way, just how I like it! Peach IV starts out with a blast of juicy fruit, bright resins (very like the All Souls incense note), and fresh wood-OUDH!!! It dries out quickly and flawlessly on me to a creeeamy, soft, slightly sweet, glowing skin scent. It's SO good! EGYPTIAN AAAAAMBER! Nuzzley, sexy, MINE!

Isn't it D/Cd?

Thanks for the clarification! I've changed the title of the thread accordingly!

Yes. THIS!

ETA: Let's talk about NEROLI! (Neroli thread merged w/orange blossom thread) I see BPAL released a neroli single note back in the day, and although the BPAL Search feature is down while I write this, thanks to Google, I get this old list. I see that Yves Roche recently released a neroli fragrance that has been received well (neroli and white musk), and I watched this , put out by Lush. I have Lorelei, Tisiphone, and Titus on the TO SNIFF list right now (I've tried many on the above list, but none live with me right now). How do you feel about neroli and what are your BPAL favorites? ETA: (remembers that bottle of Old Demons of the First Class in the back of the BPAL cabinet...rushes to slather...) ETA: Jezebel in the imp box!

BPAL Patchouli - there's nothing else like it
lookingglass replied to Ishtar's topic in Recommendations
OK-WHITE PATCHOULI, ya'll! The new Lilith new blend, Butterflies, Flowers, and Jewels Attending is the first BPAL I know of to contain it,and I cannot WAIT to smell it!!!! Does anyone know of another? The first time I smelled white patchouli was as the Tom Ford, White Patchouli. I've also smelled (and used up a bottle of) Maggie's Pharm'sWhite Patchouli oil. From the Now Smell This article linked above: "* Per Tom Ford, “We used patchouli orpur, which takes out some of the darker, smoky notes of patchouli”. (Women's Wear Daily, 6/20/2008). As near as I can tell, the word “orpur” is of fairly recent coinage. It seems to refer to ingredients that are of natural origin, but that have been molecularly modified, and according to W Magazine, the word is derived from “origin” + “purity”." In both the cases I've smelled it, it's quite fresh yet exotic: a blend of "clean" pachouli (that seems to be the base of the new orientals, a la Coco Mademoiselle), soft wood, a slight incense note, and white flowers, creamy, but with a distinctive green note. I've gotton numerous complements when I wear them, and I appreciate its "summer oriental" quality. I wonder what the BPAL White Patchouli note will smell like!!! (((grabby hands!))) Who else is with me?! -
Mouse Circus and The Other Hot Chocolate, too...
-
From the GC I'd start with: Sin, Chimera (cinnamon), Bengal (creamy spicy-like chai spice), Shub (evil gingerbread!), Morocco (sweet, creamy spices, but more vanilla and a bit lighter in feal than Bengal), Siren (spicy ginger but fresh, too), Jack (pumpkin), Lights of Men's Lives (beeswax sweetness), Hellcat (nuts, cream, rum), Dana O'Shee (if you want something lighter and milky), Obatala (for even lighter milk), Eat Me (thick vanilla cake/currant), Drink Me (everything and the kitchen sink!), Bliss (chocolate), Misk U (coffee), Kali (chocolate w/flowers), Antikytheria Mechanism , Dragon's Bone(sweet woods), and Snake Oil (of course!-spicy/musky/sweet amazeballz; even if you don't think you like musk... you just might change your mind!). Here's this thread, too, with more links to more threads!

Sounds like Thunder Moon might fit the bill, though I've never had the chance to smell it.

This is an earthy, warm, sweet, yet "finished" ambery floral. I don't get any harsh or jarring notes. The light rose, amber, and musk seem all at once to be creamy and softly powdery, slightly darkened by oakmoss. It reminds me of how Burt's Bees Baby Lotion used to smell, before the dreaded reformulation, but for grown ups. It's so soft, yet rich, like brand new Uggs feel. She really smells like a forrest sodden Alice... Totally dreamy...I am heartbroken to learn this scent will be discontinued.

I ripped through the Dragon's Bone this spring! I am a slatherer, and I really just could not get enough, and am now CRAZY about this scent. The dragon's blood is characteristically incensey/red fruity/lilacy. Orris is so nuzzley, and makes a lovely appearance here, comforting and sensual, like the scent of a loved one's warm, sleepy head. The woods are so sharp they read to my nose almost like a white musk, and keep the scent fresh (directly related to the White Rider, me thinks). It's like...a wanton's dusting powder. It's clean but creamy and slightly sweet. Top 10 update. No joke.

My partner loves this one on me. He says it smells both classy and bawdy. I didn't know what I thought of it at first-it took me several wearings before I "got" it. Fresh, I found it thin and disjointed, the tea and anise were shrill and demanding, the cookies buttery but crumbly. Wearing it, though, it softens into the skin and becomes nuzzley and sweet, powdery enough to smell like a classic perfume, weird enough to be modern, and edible enough to be sexy. It's not the vintage musk I was hoping for, but I'm keepin' this ol'broad!

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?
lookingglass replied to Absinthe's topic in Recommendations
I'd give Serpent's Kiss (Seething with passion, yet utterly cold-blooded. Dragon's blood, vetivert and spice), and Blood Kiss (Lush, creamy vanilla and the honey of the sweetest kiss smeared with the vital throb of husky clove, swollen red cherries, but darkened with the vampiric sensuality of vetiver, soporific poppy and blood red wine, and a skin-light pulse of feral musk) a go. They are both rich, sweet versions of vetiver.
