Phoenix Steamworks
ShannonElisabethJones replied to persianmouse's topic in Phoenix Steamworks & Research Facility
I really wanted to like this one. It smelled so interesting in the imp. Alas, it immediately went to powder on me. Yick! -
So, in the imp this smelled a little powdery - soft and not a whole lot of definition. Not bad, just soft. When I applied it, though, the woods started really coming out. Almost like my great-grandfather's old cigar box decades after his last cigar and before I put all my BPALs in it. There's some spicy florals in there too, but mainly warm and woody. After a few minutes, I'm getting that peach-skin scent..almost like I'm just biting into a peach and the skin has just broken. I like this one, maybe for work. It's not really in-your-face, it's soft and pretty, and the warm woods keep it from being cloying. Nice!

This one is truly lovely. Soft apple surrounded by green and white florals. Very pretty, very sparkling, and just all-around feminine.
-
This is one of my favorites - hands down. I use it just about every night before going to bed. The lavender starts out sharp and herbal, but quiets down. It's fantastic!
-
In the imp - exactly like cherry-filled chocolates. I don't like to eat them, but they sure smell nice. First applied - More cherry than chocolate. Not bad. Verrrrrrrrry sweet. I don't get any orange blossom. Definitely more fruity than flowery. After a while - it's not super strong, but it's super yummy! Don't think I'll spring for an entire bottle, but this one is just plain fun.

I don't remember trying this one, but I found it in my swaps bag. That meant I took such a dislike to it I didn't even bother adding it to My Stash or writing a review. I would say that it was most likely the amber I took exception to - or rather, my body chemistry did. I don't do well with resinous scents, and this one had tons.
-
This is very faint on me. I do get both rose and frankincense, and they are well-balanced. It's a nice, simple blend. But as it wears on, it smells of rose and armpit and it's making my eyes itch a little. Not going to the swaps yet...I might try it again. But for right now - no.

In the imp, it was like melon soda. Sparkling melon. When I applied it, the sparkling melon really amped and was joined by an ashy note. Not overpowering, but there. This is a lot sweeter than I thought it would be. After a few minutes, I'm getting the juniper. At this point, my BF says it smelled like campsite urinal cake, but i think he means he catches that piney scent (he's a master of creative hyperbole). I don't know about this one yet. Ogun has really surprised me. I'll hang on to him and try him again.

So this one smelled kind of greeny/floral in the imp, and the green got kind of sharp just after I applied it. Not super sharp like Belladonna, but just a few thorns. My BF asked if I spilled pickle juice on myself*, so I told him, "It's Katharina...it's supposed to be a little sharp." After a few minutes, it's reminding me of some of the other Illyria scents I like - Desdemona and Hermia - but with that sharp thorny green. I'm enjoying this one. Katharina's a keeper. *My BF likes to be creative with his critiques of the scents I try.

In the imp it smelled like a creamy wood. Almost foody. After iit was applied, it was fruity, then a bit (just a bit) powdery. There's something really intriguing about it...if I could just keep from sneezing. Now I'm getting the jasmine, which I love, but the myrrh and amber just don't agree with me. The go bad on me, like a diaper pail. I can't handle it without headaches. Ugh. Sorry, sweetheart, but it's off to swaps with you.
-
The tobacco just doesn't agree with me. It turns the orange blossom into this weird root-beer-y mess. I thought maybe my BF would like it but no luck. Off to swaps!

I really really really wanted to like this one. I love all the scents listed in the description, but they must not love me or there's something else going on. It just kinda turns to overly-sweet headache inducing blah on me. Bye bye.

On first sniff in the bottle, I get clean sandalwood and citrus. When I put it on, it warmed and sweetened with vanilla. Now about a half hour in it's getting a wee bit cloying with the opium. I'm not sure about this one yet - maybe for nights out, but might be to sweet for everyday wear.
-
In the bottle and freshly applied it smells like grapefruit pith (the bitter white part of the peel). The bitterness is not off-putting, though. It's clean and refreshing - got a nice bite. In fact, it's doing wonders clearing away a scent that didn't agree with me that for some reason got stuck in my sinuses. So far so good.

Fire for Thy Stepmother's Daughters

This was one of my first frimps and I'm just now trying it. LOL, for some reason I was scared to. In the bottle and freshly applied it smelled like black jelly beans. I love black jelly beans to eat, not so sure about wearing. As it dries, I'm getting cloves, too. But....nope. I've barely had it on 5 minutes before it turns into icky baby powder/diaper bag. I don't think this one is for me. -
In the bottle, this is fresh, sharp apple skins and some sort of dry herb/spice. Tasty, but probably not something I could wear often. Just after application, I get a wee bit of menthol in with the OMGAPPLE. My BF says it smells like Lifesavers wrappers (I honestly don't know where he gets this stuff, but it does make life interesting). If the apple doesn't calm down, I don't know if I'd have a wearable scent. I just don't think I could carry off smelling like apples all day. I like the scent.....maybe in a oil burner.

Wow, the descriptions of this one are all so different! I decided on a whim to finally test it - I got it as a frimp months ago. So, in the bottle it smelled like a sharp, heavy green floral with dark chocolate undertones. Eh...interesting. After about a minute, I caught a whiff of warm woodiness. Ehhhh.... Now it's getting that weird baby-powder/clean diaper bag smell to it, like Eros did with me. It's kind of making me want to gag. SWAPS!!

Fresh peach and florals. Not too sweet or cloying. Sticks around a while, too, without getting overbearing. Very beautiful and spring-like. I love this scent.
-
It's like a nice floral soap, pleasant and soft, with a touch of green herbals. It's almost dewy - not drenched florals like The Lady of Shalott or Desdemona, but just barely misted with dew. This is what I imagine Ireland to smell like. I love it.
-
Very piney. Sharp and refreshing. At first all I got were fresh pine needles, but it's starting to warm up a little with the woodiness. I'm not really getting any berries yet, but if they never show up, I'll still be happy with this scent.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Bat
ShannonElisabethJones replied to Heavenlyrabbit's topic in Mad Tea Party
Something about this is like melony Sprite. I really like it. It's floaty and a bit silly but not too sweet. Unfortunately the throw is very short. This little bat flew right away in about two hours. -
Why oh why did I wait so long to try this? It's amazing! When I first applied it, it was all vanilla. Tasty and cakey. Then it got spicy and sexy. So wonderful. I will definitely be ordering more!

I received this as a frimp. On first sniff I got RUM DRINK! But not in an overly-sweet way. I also caught the slight woody note and a wee bit of the sea. Very nice. However, I just can't wear it. It's too dude-smelling for me. I'm glad my boyfriend liked it, because he will be wearing it.
-
Wowie. Sharp, dark herbals at first. I can definitely catch the vetiver and tobacco. And something almost...minty? Menthol-y? I can taste it in the back of my throat. After a few minutes, I got a whiff of dusty florals along with the tobacco. Veerrrry interesting... I hope it sweetens up a bit. Overall, though, I like it. ETA: I just couldn't do it. It was like sucking on the bowl-end of my grandpa's pipe. I washed it off, but I can still taste the ashy tobacco.

Woo, menthol! Definitely cuts through the sinus-glue, lol. I just wish I didn't have to keep reapplying it.
