History - I wrote my thesis about China during the Maoist era (particularly the Cultural Revolution), Russian revolution history & it's "big brother" aspect to China; other than that I'll read just about anything to do with history, I'm not picky! Victorian and New Orleans fashion, jewelry, and the like. Writing is my baby.

Favorite Scents
Flower Moon, Beltane, Morocco, Alice, Snake Oil, Aizen-Myoo. My favorite ever is probably Snow Bunny, I wish everything I own could smell like it. Favorite notes are carnation, pine, cypress, sweet violet, anything grassy or green, lavender (has to be a true lavender), lemon and lime (but not too sweet). I love florals but some of the labs don't work for me and I'm not sure yet which exact note is doing it - might be lilac or a more bitter violet.

OMG I loved this right when I put it on for the first time. Right off the bat I think the lemon keeps the "drier" notes from seeming too dusty. It's slightly soapy, quite masculine (almost bay rum-ish) and just delicious. Once it dries down I get the wood and crispness, still touched with a soapy clean background. I can definitely see this as a summer scent, when it's windy outside and not too warm. I think the name is very apt, as well. I wouldn't call this a traditionally feminine scent by any stretch of the imagination. I think it's the kind of perfume that would stay in the minds of others if they smelled it on someone of the fairer sex.

This is one of those scents that I desperately wanted to love from the description. Unfortunately (boo!) I ran into two major problems - 1) One of the notes in here that adds to the sweetness is a note from the lab that never works for me. It gets amped up to the extreme and goes sickeningly sweet and slightly burnt smelling. 2) Something goes tropical and I sort of smell like I should be sipping from a coconut filled with pineapple juice and a cocktail parasol. The most obvious answer would be the rum, but I've tried rum in other mixes and not gotten this from it so I'm guessing it's from the rum in addition to something else (might be the hazelnut). I didn't get any almond, very little cream and any hint of honey mead was way overlooked by the tropical rummy-ness. Oh well, I should know better than to try anything remotely foodish by now.

Oh my gosh. This is not for me. On me it's maple sugar with a deeper woodsy quality (I think the fact that it leans towards molasses-y brown sugar amps up the woodsiness, too). It's also almost ridiculously strong and only gets stronger with time. I've washed my wrists three times now and it's still going strong. I can be prone to headaches/queasy stomach from too strong of scents, and if you're like me, I'd suggest not getting a bottle of this. If you're into super-sweet scents, go for it. Just don't slather, I beg you.

If I had a bottle of this and a bottle of Alice next to each other without labels it would be very, very difficult to tell the difference. The rose in Alice may be tempered a bit more by the spiciness in the beginning and the creaminess in the end - but very slightly. If you love rose, Katrina is for you, it's definitely the dominant note here. If you love Alice (like me!) I say pass on this one. It's a lovely scent but just too similar to justify.

This is not for me. I love florals, and although I can't remember whether I ordered this one or it was an extra, from the description, I'd guess it was the former. Unfortunately, this does really weird stuff on my skin. I definitely get the sharp, high florals right off the bat, it almost comes off as soapy. The worst part, though, is that in addition to that, it smells like cigarette smoke. Now, considering the feel that this blend evokes, if it weren't on my skin that might be kind of cool. But it is on my skin! It smells like floraly, old woman-ish bath soap that a smoker tried to use to cover up their little habit. Hey, at least I got a creative image out of it.

I definitely get a rum note in this one, but it quickly gets overwhelmed by butterscotch/caramel. Initially it's a bit much for me being that foody scents and I tend not to get along, but after about an hour the hyperbutteryness (can you tell I made that word up?) calms down and it becomes a nice, subtle sweetness. This stage seems to have a pretty long life, at least five or six hours. I have a bottle of this, and I don't see myself using the whole thing but I would keep it just to have at least one foody scent, and because the artwork is so nice. Edit - well, I've really been noticing a prominent nutty beginning to this one, which just isn't working for me. So once again I'm on a foody that works for me quest.

Alright, I'll be honest here, I'm not good at reviewing florals. But, being that this is my favorite BPAL oil ever I feel I should give it some props. The scent in the bottle stays really true on me. It's a slightly spicy handful of fresh, dew-covered flowers from the florist. Surprisingly enough, I don't get any roses or violets out of this one, nor do I get any sweet/green notes. It's just a straight up, bouquet of flowers that blend wonderfully together. On me the staying power is great, I rub it on my wrists and chest and it lasts all day. I also love the sunny color of the oil itself. If this were a catalog, I'm sure I'd have eighty bottles of the stuff hoarded in my closet. As it is, I'll just treasure the one I do have.

Oh, how I love this when I first put it on! It's creamy, sweetened milk mixed with spicy carnations. The rose only comes out after about fifteen minutes and it can go either way - a really amplified single note rose, which, although I love rose, is too strong; or the milk and spice temper the rose and everything works out wonderfully. I love Alice, and I'll definitely keep my bottle, but I just have to figure what to wear with it in order to mellow out the rose a bit.

Wow, it seems like I'm getting something completely different than most people on this one. It starts out like a aquatic lavender scent, in a very masculine way. I had initially assumed I wouldn't be able to wear despite my love for men's scents because it was sooo manly. I kind of forgot I put it on and went to read and then about half an hour later and lo and behold! Juke Joint! I absolutely loved the dry down of Juke Joint - it was a gorgeous, sugary, bay rum, but it took at least four hours for it to get to this stage. So, I'm very glad to have found out that I can get the exact same scent from Arcana but in much less time, and it stays true. I would definitely buy this in a 5 ML.

This is pretty much a combination of two things on me - Tazo Passion Tea (a yummy, sour, dark red passionfruit herbal tea), and the spices of Bathsheba. First I get the plums and roses and then comes the spice, but everything works so well together that nothing seems to jump out above anything else. I would definitely get a bottle of this, but with so many others on my list and the similarities I get with Bathsheba it may be awhile.

On me this is baby oil, pure baby oil. It's clean and kind of powdery and very cozy. I happen to absolutely love baby oil and I've yet to find a perfume I can layer over that mimicks it, so I'm very glad to have found this. It also lasts very well on me, and being that I have a very sensitive nose I can put on just a tiny dab if I don't want to be overwhelmed. As for the voodoo implications of it - my SO loves the scent of baby oil, and I can see how the name is fitting - it makes me just want to cuddle up with someone. So, in my case, it works.

Red Devil goes through a few stages but ends with pure lilac, and it lasted quite awhile on me.

Oh my Gosh! I absolutely adore the beginning of this one. It smells just like Tihitian Treat (the pop!) on me. After a few minutes it began to get spicy in a cinnamon, carnation kind of way, which although it wasn't the fruity goodness I was still okay with. About another half an hour after that I hazarded another sniff and all I got was lilacs. Very pretty lilacs, nonetheless, but I already have a ton of white florals so I don't think I'll be buying this one in a larger size. I do think I will finish the imp, just to smell that fleeting moment of Tihitian Treat yumminess.
-
I don't know about this one. When I first opened the imp it was pure foody butter. The spices and pumpkin were probably underneath there somewhere, but I couldn't get past the butter. When I tried it out the butter stage lasted for probably half an hour which then gave way to a very strong pure clove/potpourri type scent. Lastly, it turned into a very nice mulled cider, I could detect both the peaches and the cloves. I really liked this last stage, but I don't know if I'd like it enough to go through the first two every time I wore it. From all of the LE fall/winter scents, I've noticed that I've ended up liking them more as room scents. I think I'm going to have the put Jack in that same category.

When I first put this on it smelled very, very masculine and mostly of heavy pine and soap. It quickly mellowed and if I close my eyes it really does seem like the scent of a bonfire in the middle of some dark forest. I can smell the smoke, spices, skin and the pine, which has faded into the background. One of the things that I really love about this one is how closely it sits to my skin. It's not the type that everyone around will smell, but I can see someone leaning in and then not being about to get the scent out of their mind. It's very lovely in an understated sort of way. If I had a larger bottle I'd love to mix some with body oil, I'm sure it would be great.
