The Lowdown on Incense & Resin - The Best Recommendations

Ooh! Try Nephilim! -
Zephyr has some beachyness to it. I hear that Sea of Glass is nice and salty as well. Ooh, that makes me crave margaritas.

Floral Recs for those who usually don't like florals

The Unicorn, Veil, and Desdemona, I'd also agree with. I'd throw in Ophelia too. -
I'll chime in for Wanda and Perversion too. Loviatar was one of a few scents which utterly did not work on me at all, so at first I thought I couldn't do leather, but Wanda proved me wrong. Tintagel doesn't smell very leathery to me at all. Perversion definitely has detectable leather, and it kicks ass in general, though I agree it fades pretty fast.

The Lowdown on Incense & Resin - The Best Recommendations

Nephilim=delicious and incensy. Aureus=lovely, light, and incensy. Second Xiuhtecuhtli too. -
A midnight scent, evoking images of flickering golden firelight reflecting off the sheen of glistening skin and the jerking shadows of bodies suffused with spiritual ecstasy. A deep, powerful, resonant blend of myrrh, patchouli, vetiver, lime, vanilla, pine, almond and clove. The lime is most prominent in this. Especially when you smell the lime fringed by the patchouli, it reminds me an awful lot of the discontinued celestial blend Leo. The lime floats on top of the hippie-store, mellow woodsyness and is brightened by the other flowers and spices on the edges. Voodoo is a scent that's more happy and less smoky than I expected. Not vastly ritualistic, but a nice touch when you're out shopping for coffin nails and graveyard dust.

This was a freebie in my last order. I never would have gotten it on my own, partially because I couldn't imagine what it would be like from the description, and partially because the name sounded, admittedly, to me, less remarkable than most of BPAL's funky names. However, I love the fragrance. It smells almost exactly like my all time favorite massage oil , which is Enobe Balanced. (The website is here. ) Anyway, it's a very subtle, comforting, yet incredibly sexy rose/vanilla/lavendar scent. It's much sexier than you'd expect, and not nearly as dry as the description makes you think.

Eve is much happier and more innocent than I had imagined. Fresh, wet tea rose and apple blossom are the prominent notes. If anybody ever wore Tinkerbell's tea rose perfume in childhood, this reminds me of a slightly apple-ier version of that. The fragrance stays bright and true and doesn't change much to my nose, but lasts longer than many florals. It's good for girls or just for young women who feel free and mirthful.

Xiuhtecuhtli is one of those rare scents on me where a little goes a long way; usually it takes a lot on my skin to become potent. Orange is dominant, but it's neither a cheerful citrus cleaner nor a festive holiday pomader. Oh no, this is far more mysterious and beguiling. The incense smoke surrounds the orange, making you feel as if you might have only ever caught a whiff of orange in passing down the street of a busy bazaar. When you dance, the scent changes, and snippets of jungle blooms waft around you, turning to orange, to incense, and back again, through the cycle. This is a very magical, mysterious blend which perfectly encapsulates what I imagine as the feeling of Aztec offerings. A brightness of joy, but a sharp smokiness of sacrifice. And it lasts for a long time.

Again, not BPAL, but some witchy oil supplies have New Mown Hay Oil. I know Azure Green does. I haven't smelled Scarecrow, but it sounds like it could be a good approximation.

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

They're both very light and smell light blue to me, but I can't really pick out many single notes in either. -

Ice Queen reminds me of Blue Moon, if you have that. -
I would suggest Dublin, which is very green, and Queen Mab, which is grassy but floral.

Very gingerbready without being too sweet. A lot of gingerbread scents are very candy-like and therefore smell artificial, but this is pure gingerbread candy. For days you want to smell warm and snuggly, this is a good choice. Also, I did ritual the day I wore this. The ritual involved scattering cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. The combination of the scents those spices left on my hands plus Gingerbread Poppet was edibly divine!

Alice is very nice, although not quite as strong as I would like. I think I like scents with a lot of oomph, but the gentle sweetness of Alice is very pleasant. I was worried that the carnation would be too powerful, but it's just a nice little kick to the sweet honey and cream-ness of the rest of the scent. I don't pick out much bergamot, but I wasn't looking for it.

This reminds me of a more nocturnal, dessert-y version of Lady MacBeth. The wine is prominent, juicy, and very red. There's chocolate overtones, though, so wearing this is like eating a yummy mocha chocolate with an inside full of sticky red wine syrup. ETA: This blend is what Kali would be without balsam or rose, if that helps at all.

This reminds me of O, but more subtle. It stays closer to your skin, so you can still slink around all furtively and catlike, but it has the same ambery warmth of O.

I recently got an order which contained bottles of Tarot: the Star and Aureus. I'd used up the imps of both of those that I had before. I know that the nature of the product is somewhat fluid (no pun intended!) so I realize that every batch can't smell exactly the same. But these smell rather different from the way they did in the imps, and I want to know what their usual scent is so I know what to expect if I order more. the new bottle of the Star that I got almost smells peppermint-y. There's something very cool and crisp here, and the lime and coconut aren't as prominent as they were in the imp. the bottle of Aureus smells rather powdery, not the patchouli-hippie-store scent I was used to before. Has anyone else experienced these scents changing? And how should I find out what to expect from future batches? Thanks.

O doesn't smell like roses or jasmine to me, it's very honeyed and warm and amber-y. I haven't tried (Old) New Orleans, but I hear the jasmine is pretty prominent and lovely there. Eve, on me, has the apple blossoms very prominently. It's a nice, girlish floral.

The strawberry is definitely prominent here. It is somewhere between a fresh-picked berry and a candy strawberry. The champagne really just adds a bubbyness to the scent and doesn't contribute its own fragrance, to my nose. Bon Vivant is very cheerful. It doesn't last very long, but I think I would get tired of its sweet berryness if it lasted all day, mostly because it doesn't change very much on me. It is really great in the bath, I think. The strawberries are uplifting and relaxing, but the crystalline-ness of the champagne still makes it feel clean to soak in. ADDED May 17: Very fizzy and very strawberry indeed! It's a chipper scent, good for days of feeling perky or girly. Not creamy or anything, and doesn't seem to have a lot of depth, but it's cheerful.

I started doing the imps in film containers idea per Andrabell, which works really well, plus the folks at film developing places will often have lots of extra film containers on hand that you can ask for. I just traveled with BPAL and didn't get my imps or bottles checked, though they must've looked weird on the x ray. I wrapped mine in plastic wrap and put them in little paper cups, also saran-wrapped, and put those upright in a makeup bag. On the planes, whenever possible, I kept the bag right in front of my feet under the seat in front of me so it stayed upright. One flight I didn't have that compartment so I had to stow my bag in the overhead bin and there was a little leakage. Perfumes leaked onto their own labels, but not much disappeared from the bottle. and they didn't leak onto each other.

I don't really like lemons, but I was still drawn to this one, and I'm glad. It smells more like a grove of lemon trees than it does just a bottle of lemon Joy or something. The tea is a nice anchoring scent that is freshened by the lemon but not too overpowering.

This is one of the dreamiest scents I've tried. The violets are ethereal. For those of you who ever played with Charmkins when you were little, this smell reminds me of the way the scented Charmkins would smell. There's something fairy-like about it.

I was surprised by how much I loved this. The bamboo is very clean and grounding, but the metallic bite of the ozone gives it a nice, faraway feel. The cherry blossom and orchids are there, adding a wistful and delicate note at the end, but they certainly don't overpower.

I was nervous about this because of the "gentleman" in the description, but as it turned out, there was no need. I don't find it to be very masculine or anything, although men could certainly wear it. Definitely, limes are predominant. The lilacs and tea really serve more to anchor the lime scent than to overpower it. It's a very calming, yet cherry scent. Not the lime of margaritas, but the lime of frothy key lime martinis, something creamy and sweet beneath the tart lime.
