Sugar-Slathered Candied Apple
edenssixthday replied to UberClaire's topic in Black Phoenix Trading Post
Sugar-Slathered Candied Apple - Oh wow, this smells exactly like a caramel apple! You know that very first bite of a caramel apple when you get a smidge of sticky sweet caramel on your cheeks and the juice of the sweet, crisp apple dribbles down your chin just a bit? That's what this smells like -- it smells like that first bite of caramel apple. It is mostly an apple scent with a hint of caramel. Apple almost always turns rancid on my skin and caramel usually turns into a burnt sugar scent, but the apple and caramel in this scent stay true on my skin for a good 45-60 minutes, at which point I start to get a bit of a plastic scent coming from my skin where I applied this blend. The scent is very strong for the first 30-45 minutes and about average after that. I am amazed at how true-to-life the caramel apple scent is. For people who love apple and caramel, I would strongly recommend this scent. If you loved Creepy, you'll probably love this one, too. -
Aeris - While I give the actual oil of this one the same high ratings as the other three massage oils, I can't do the same for the scent. It's predominantly lavender and grass on me, both which are scents that I rarely, if ever, find appealing. It's earthy in an herbal sense, yet somehow it maintains an airy quality about it. I would definitely recommend this to people who love the scent of lavender.

Ignus - I didn't think I could find a scent more spectacular than Aquae...until I tried Ignus. What an amazing scent! Along with Aquae, it's one of my two favorite scents ever and I wish it came in perfume oil form! I made the mistake of putting this on right before bed when I needed to sleep. I'll never do that again! This is a bright, fiery, and invigorating scent -- one that will will you up in the morning, keep you up all day, and is only appropriate for a night spent in bed with no intention of sleeping. This is predominantly a myrrh, sandalwood, and mandarin scent on me. The notes blend gorgeously. As with the other massage oils, the oil is smooth and non-greasy and wonderful used as a body fragrance. I just wish the scent lasted all day. I also wish I could get my soap, shower gel, shampoo, dog's shampoo, etc. to smell like this!

Aquae - If this were available as a perfume oil, it would be only one of two perfume oils I would ever need again (the other one being Ignis!) Aquae's scent is so incredibly gorgeous, tranquil, soothing, and cleansing. I can't begin to describe how emotional this scent is for me. It makes me very honored to be a water-sign. The scent is predominantly chamomile, frankincense and geranium on me with the tiniest hint of sandalwood in the background. I can't get over how gorgeous these notes are together. The oil has a wonderfully smooth and sensuous texture and soaks into my skin without leaving a miserable and greasy residue. I only wish the scent lasted longer, as I would wear it all day long every day if I could. I'm so glad I bought this. It's really, really fantastic.

Pirate Moon - Oh wow, this is lovely! I positively adore ambergris scents, and this is most definitely predominantly ambergris and date on me. Behind the ambergris is the lovely fresh scent of palm, wood, tobacco, and balsam. It's warm and sweet and musky and woody and positively amazing. It's really strong when I first apply it, but it lightens up as it dries down. It doesn't morph much at all. It's definitely a gender-neutral scent. I wish I were better at describing this one because it's so incredibly beautiful and elegant. I am completely in love with it.
-
The Phoenix - Due to the "gunpowder" note, this is the one blend of the September lunar update that I thought I was going to really dislike. As it turns out, it's my favorite. This is definitely a woody ozone scent and the gunpowder in it is very evident, yet in this blend (unlike all other blends with similar notes) it gives the overall scent a depth and an edge that makes it positively perfect. It's bold, dangerous, and super sexy. This is not an aquatic in the typical sense, yet I definitely get the feeling of being on a war-battered ship on the sea. This is definitely a gender-neutral scent, and I could see my husband really pulling off this scent...but he's not going to have a chance to because I'm keeping it all for myself! Once the scent has been on my skin for about an hour, it mellows out a lot and the various notes all soften and become virtually indistinguisha ble from one another, except for the Snake Oil, which is now the dominant scent. This is most definitely my favorite Snake Oil blend of all time. I am totally in love with this scent. I especially love it when worn in a scent locket because it seems to maintain its strength that way and I can also smell a hint of the lime, which apparently fades from my skin instantly.
-
Plunder - Spices, spices, spices! When I first apply this, all I smell is cinnamon. Loads and loads of spicy cinnamon. And then my skin starts to feel like it's on fire and it's pretty obvious there's cassia in this, which I start to smell after about 10 minutes when the cinnamon scent recedes a bit. At this point, I can also smell so many of the other notes - tea leaf, clove, tobacco, peppercorn, but what's really stunning is how the dry, woodiness of the sandalwood blends so gorgeously with these other notes. This blend smells so damn good -- woody, spicy, and quite exotic. Unfortunately, the cassia burns my skin horribly so I cannot continue to wear this. In a scent locket, all I smell is that strong cinnamon note and nothing else. If I can figure out another way to experience the fullness of this scent without my skin hurting so much from wearing it, I will certainly do so because it's really damn gorgeous.

The Ghastly Garden - I haven't really been digging on the florals lately, so I wasn't expecting to be impressed by this scent, but I am. It's not what I'd consider a typical "garden scent." It's very green and wet, kind of swampy and aquatic, and reminds me of the overgrown, neglected garden of a large plantation house in the Deep South. The first note I detect is definitely bright green, followed by the sweetness of soft, watery florals. There is the scent of heavy, damp air in this blend, and I can almost hear the whirr of the cicadas and the chirps of crickets. This is drop-dead gorgeous and I'm wishing I had more than one single imp! It sticks somewhat close to my skin, but it lasts for hours and hours.

Death of Autumn - I thought for sure I was smelling clove and vetiver in this scent, but apparently it's clove and something else that's gritty, earthy, and dark. This is not a very pleasant scent on my skin. It's very dark, raw, and earthy in a way that doesn't mesh so well with my skin chemistry. The clove and whatever I thought was vetiver (but isn't) are the two strongest notes on my skin and the scent of crunchy, dead leaves is not far behind those first two notes. It's not very pleasant, and my skin eats it up really fast so it has no staying power on me. It's not going to get any additional wear from me.

October - When I smelled this for the first time, I was immediately whisked back in time by the memory of being a teenager and riding my bike over leaves that had fallen to the ground, and the scent of freshly-fallen autumn leaves and the soft, damp dirt beneath the leaves. In my memory, the day is one of those absolutely perfect autumn days, when the sun is warm but the air has a bit of a nip to it, and the sky is as blue as can be and there's not a cloud as far as the eye can see. There's a sweetness to the scent that is, I'm guessing, the "sap in the air" note and it really does remind me of autumn in New England or Northern Minnesota. It's an exquisite scent, one that's totally not my usual style, and yet the scent evokes such vivid memories and imagery that I do think I'll be wearing this on occasion over the next couple months. The throw is average and the staying power is a bit below average.

Libra 2007 - Holy smokes! I just read the scent description and blown away because there are so many fruits and florals in this, and that's completely not what I smelled when I tried this on! I'm going to have to go test this again now that I know the scent description. Okay, I've got it applied to my skin again and hmm... same as before. I only smell the slightest bit of rose and really, the only thing I smell beyond that is a hint of powdery honey. It almost smells like there is white musk and/or skin musk in this blend. It's incredibly subtle on my skin and I'm surprised that the carnation doesn't show up on me, as it's usually a nice, spicy floral, and I'm surprised the black currant isn't evident, since it usually shows up as a hideous cat pee scent on my skin. Quite a strange one that apparently isn't meant to work for someone with my skin chemistry. It also disappears on me quite quickly -- pretty much as soon as the oil dries down, it turns into a lightly powdery almost-nothing.

The Twisted Oak Tree - This is totally different than what I expected. Use the word "rotted" in a scent description and of course, my brain interprets that as "decaying corpse" or something equally grody. This is not really my type of fragrance, but it's still not bad at all! It's mostly a sweet moss scent on me with a hint of wood in the background and a lovely layer of ivy and a pinch of dirt. I do wish there were more ivy used in BPAL blends because it's a gorgeous, green note. This has an average level of throw and staying power on me. I imagine people who are drawn to earthy/mossy type scents will eat this one up.

Hunter Moon 2007 - This smells nothing like I expected. I thought I'd get the scent of leaves and smoke, but instead, it smells strongly of pear and powdery musk -- it's like what you'd get if you crossed Perilous Parlor with Enraged Bunny Musk. It is incredibly strong and sweet when I first apply it, but it fades significantly after 15-20 minutes, leaving little behind but a faint trace of fermented pears and a hint of sweet, powdery musk. I keep smelling the fermented apple scent wafting around me, but can't really pinpoint it on my skin, oddly enough. This scent is not something I expected to like nor is it something I would typically wear, but I like it.
-
Perilous Parlor - I love how this smells in the bottle - it's a sweet, creamy, and rich vanilla-pear. It's drop-dead gorgeous. And then it turns to the Stench of Death once it hits my skin. This blend and my skin chemistry = Really Bad Combo. When it sits on my skin, it becomes heavy, thick, and cloying. It makes me horribly nauseated and gives me a terrible headache. I tried it twice, and it had the same effect both times. Plus, whatever type of vanilla that is used in this blend is the one that smells like melty plastic on me. It's such a disappointment because in the bottle, it initally smelled so amazingly good. I'm glad to know that while I can't wear it, it really is getting lots and lots of love out there from other people.

Crypt Queen - Oh good Lord this is gorgeous. G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S. Dammit. I was hoping I'd hate it since I really can't afford to keep it! But I love it! It is definitely fruity, but doesn't smell juicy or artifical or like Jolly Ranchers or Life Savers, so those of you who are afraid of the ultra sweet fruity scents, this one isn't remotely like that. The patchouli creeps in during the first couple minutes, giving the scent a dry and woody scent. There is an absolutely perfect balance between the dry wood scent and the raspberry and pomegranate scent. I smell no gardenia or rose, try as I might, and I'm usually quite sensitive to black pepper in blends, but can't detect it in this one for the life of me. The "blood accord" must be the slight metallic scent I'm smelling that is a remarkably nice companion to the patchouli and red fruits. This scent does tend to stick somewhat close to my skin and it has below-average staying power, which surprises me since patchouli usually grounds a scent to my skin for a long time. Still, it's really gorgeous and very unique.

Bonfire Night - Smoky and uber-sweet. On me, this is sort of the masculine version of Sugar Skull. It's that sweet and cloying. If there were only a hint of sweetness, I think I'd love this on my husband. But there's too much for me. The smoke and beer falls into the background as that treacle note amps up on my skin and eats up everything in sight. I'm kind of sad about this one because it smells like a smoky scent I could really love if it weren't for the blasted sugary note that's killing it for me. Oh well, that means more for someone else who loves it. The throw is really nice and the wear length is above average.

The Lurid Library - For the first hour, this smells like men's cologne, or really bad Avon perfume from the 1970s. It's kind of embarrassing to be wearing it around people. Yes, it's that bad on me. After about an hour, it becomes much more of a skin scent and while the cologne quality is still there, it's not as "cheap" smelling and it's backed up by a good amount of what smells like vanilla musk. It's really not that bad at this point and something I would actually really love to smell on my husband...but only if I don't have to be around him during that first hour while it stinks.

Sugar Skull 2007 - As with all previous years of Sugar Skull, I can't stand it. It smells like burnt molasses and carries the faint odor of rancid fruit beneath the burnt molasses. It smells like a stinky brown sugar Yankee Candle just exploded all over me. It's atrocious. Even after it dries down and mellows a bit, it's still horrific. I can honestly say that Sugar Skull (every year's version) is my least favorite BPAL ever. For those of you who read this, please note that I generally hate all brown sugar, caramel, etc. type scents. They are ghastly on me. So with Sugar Skull, your mileage may vary. *gag*

Samhain 2007 - Samhain is a blend that I haven't cared for at all in previous years. This year's blend, however, is quite nice. It's warm and spicy and a great autumn scent. The patchouli seems to be more low-key this year than in past year's blends. The apple does not turn rancid on my skin as usual, and it blends gorgeously with the pumpkin and spices. Unfortunately, just as with all previous versions of Samhain, even though I like this particular one, something in it makes me sick, giving me the world's most atrocious headache and miserable nausea. It's not a coincidence -- I have the exact same physical response to every year's version of Samhain. I'm going to blame it on the mullein since I don't really know what that note is. The scent is long-wearing and has excellent throw. I'm so bummed that this makes me ill, otherwise I'd definitely be wearing it regularly throughout Autumn.

The Chilling Cellar - This smells nothing at all like I thought it would. It has a touch of "wet stone" scent to it, but mostly, it smells like metallic powder. I get none of the wine/vinegar notes. The "wet stone" note reminds me a touch of Shanghai Tunnel and otherwise, it's just really sharp and powdery. Believe it or not, I like it. A lot. However, I have to be careful not to put more than the teeniest tiniest drop on my skin or everyone around me is enveloped in the scent of sweet, wet-stone powder. Very pretty and feminine, oddly enough, and kind of commercial. It's not one I'll wear a lot, but one that's likely to be worn when I dress up.

... An incense blend that invokes the higher qualities of mercy and compassion, mingled with the soft, sugared currant scent of offertory soul cakes. All Souls 2007 - All Souls 2006 is one of my favorite BPALs and it's only gotten better with age. I'm not sure what Beth did different with All Souls 2007, but it's completely lacking the "cake and currant" scents and the incense note is incredibly dry and scratchy. This year's blend turns to the charming scent of cat pee on my skin and I can't wash it off fast enough or get it away from me quickly enough. Can't win 'em all, I s'pose.

Aeaea - Oh my, this is the scent of summertime at the beach. It's incredibly beachy without being remotely tropical or reminiscent of suntan lotion. It's fresh, clean, breezy, and really pretty. The aloe is most definitely the dominant note. I don't smell the berries at all, and I'm surprised the cedar doesn't turn to pencil shavings on me. I really don't smell the cedar or cypress except to say that something is giving a sense of "body" to the aloe, and I'm certain it's these woods. I really love this blend and even though it fades quickly, I'm so glad I have some. This is going to be worn a lot next summer.

Dia De Los Muertos 2007 - This year's blend is different from previous versions of DDLM. It's predominantly cactus and incense on me and I smell no chocolate whatsoever (SCORE!) It's got a hint of tobacco to the overall smoky incense scent, which is brightened by the sweet cactus flower. This is my favorite of all the DDLM blends, and I'm delighted to have a full bottle of it. It's got above-average throw and about average staying power.

A Murder of Crows
edenssixthday replied to Heavenlyrabbit's topic in Gifts with Donation or Purchase
A Murder of Crows - This is a gorgeous scent - soft, subtle, feminine, and really pretty. It opens up with the scent of iris and verbena, but is remarkably not lemony. As it dries on my skin, I notice it's becoming a woody and herbal, floral. It's so incredibly gorgeous! Upon full drydown, the woodiness of the amber begins to take on the slightest powdery touch (as it often does on my skin), but remains subtle and beautiful. The scent lasts about 15 hours on me, which is one of the longest lasting BPALs I've ever worn. It's really beautiful and it's a shame it's impossible to procure a full bottle of this. -
Hi’iaka – WOW! This is the first blend I’ve encountered in a long time that makes me wish for 10 ml bottles to make a comeback. This is really an incredibly gorgeous tropical scent. It is a very strong floral and there’s absolutely nothing shy about it. This scent totally and completely reminds me of Hawaii. The orchid and white ginger are the strongest notes and it’s brightened up by a splash of lime. I have no idea what most of the Hawaiian notes in this blend are, but the overall scent is very bold, bright, and thoroughly South Pacific tropical. I have plane tickets for Hawaii in December of this year, and smelling this scent has me about a hundred times more excited for the trip than I already was. I’ll be buying a bottle of this to wear while I’m in Hawaii, and I have half a mind to buy bottles of it to give to all of my female family members as we celebrate Christmas in Hawaii. It’s gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous and if you like tropical floral scents, I can’t recommend this one enough. Oh, and the staying power is well above-average. Fantastic blend. Definitely a ten out of ten.
