    The Abandonment of the Unicorn

Violets and I generally do not get along, but I gave this one a chance due to all of the other notes, and because the violet and vanilla chiffon duet from last year ended up being a win on me. I get more violet than lavender from this, although the violet here is much more gentle than most violet is on my skin. I've tested this three times, and all three times, the violet was the star of the show on me. However, the first time I tried this, it was more like if you took Lush's Twilight and made it with more violet than lavender (although that's making this sound way more lavender-forward than this scent really is), with a soft myrrh and musk in place of any tonka. But the second and third time I tried this, I was like, "Violet and honeydew?" And now that I've thought that, it's what I smell whenever I sniff this scent. I believe it's the spun sugar note that is giving off that honeydew quality, because I've experienced that in some of Astrid's scents containing a spun sugar note. It does help lend a sort of ethereal vibe to this scent, but I enjoyed this the most the first time I tested it, when the other notes got to play a bigger role. I think this is very pretty and will have to spend more time with my decant to see if I need more of it. That said, I'm very happy that I decided to give this a chance despite my tendency to avoid scents with violet notes!

    La Sylphe de Forêt Noire

I grabbed a decant of this because I've made an effort to try all of the Gorey scents thus far, and the pine and candle smoke notes appealed to me. La Sylphe de Forêt Noire isn't strong on the pine, though. I actually get a lot of lily, satin, and myrrh from this, with some pine and moss lingering in the background during the first few hours of wear. I think the satin note may be reminding me of the something in Black Silk, but I no longer have that blend and haven't smelled it in ages, so I can't test it and know for sure. The lily in this is a sweet variety -- I believe it's the same lily note that was used in Je Suis Toujours la Grande Isis, which also featured a myrrh note. When the pine note fades away, the candle smoke makes itself more known, and the combination of the fabric note, the lily, and the sweet beeswax candle smoke is somehow reminding me of House of Mirrors Atmo from Denver Comic Con in 2015 -- like, not an exact match, but I feel like it could be a cousin to that scent. Although it's not the pine-centric blend I was hoping for, I would have enjoyed this scent more if it were like its end result from the beginning -- with more of that candle smoke to help tame that lily and fabric. As it is, this isn't something I need more of, but if you're a fan of lily, you should definitely give this a whirl.

    Hiss & Hearse

Like the atmo, this starts off with a blast of moss-tinged mud, but the mossy mud lasts longer on the skin than it does in atmo form. When the mossy mud does calm down, the musky Snake Oil is the strongest aspect of the scent on me -- again, like the atmo -- but I, too, get more Dorian on me than I do from the atmo, especially once this has been on the skin for several hours, and it ends up being a main player. It's the musk and vanilla of both Snake Oil and Dorian that I get the most from both of those scents, and I'm pleased to report that this has some great staying power, still going strong on me the next morning after I tested it one evening. Hiss and Hearse is a top tier Snake Oil and Dorian hybrid scent. It may possibly be the best hybrid of the two since No DNA Test Required from the 2018 Lilith collection. If you're a fan of Snake Oil and Dorian, you will enjoy this, unless you dislike dirt. I enjoy all of the components of this scent, so I'm very happy to have a bottle in my collection -- and I may have to scoop up another before it goes away.

    On Friendship

This isn't a bread scent like Unsubtle Euphanism, Lavender Rosemary Baguette, Olisbokollike, or Loaf -- at least, not on me. On me, this is all about the roasted chestnut (which smells like an actual roasted chestnut and not the sort of chestnut you might find in a dessert) and the oakwood smoke, with touches of the bergamot and the honeyed part of the labdanum. It's warm, nutty, and smoky, but the bergamot helps to lift the scent a little, and the honey adds a bit of welcome sweetness. The smoke in this isn't acrid at all and ends up being the dominant note on me after several hours of wear -- and it's probably one of the best smoke notes I've encountered from the Lab. I don't think I need a whole bottle of this, but if you're looking for a smoky roasted chestnut scent, this one should be up your alley!

    Hearse of Pancakes

This smells exactly like last year's atmo, which is to say, it smells DELICIOUS. This is more syrup-drenched pancake on me than coffee, but again, the syrup in this does not smell like most maple syrups. I have not been loving maple as a note the past few years, so that is a good thing, in my book. The syrup is really dark and somehow not cloying, and the pancakes themselves aren't overly buttery. The coffee is even less noticeable on my skin than in the atmo, so that must just be my skin amping up the pancake aspects, compared to other reviewers. If you think you will like this, you probably will. I'm glad I decided to grab perfume oil to go along with my atmo, and I look forward to trying it with Pumpkin Brioche French Toast Hair Gloss when my decant arrives, so that I can smell like the best breakfast! ETA: I slathered this on before heading to work on Wednesday, and the scent just lasted and lasted all day and had a ton of throw, with the sugary glaze of the cruller becoming more prominent as the day went on, cozying up to the syrupy buckwheat pancakes. UGH, it's SO GOOD. Some of the perfume must have gotten on my seatbelt, because now it also smells like the most delicious breakfast.

    Cherry Cola Hearse

This is a cherry party on me throughout wear, and I'm here for it. The cherry is a deep, dark black cherry mixed with a candy-like cherry that smells like a cherry Tootsie Pop. I don't get any cola from this, although I do get a caramel-y, syrup-y aspect to the scent after a while, which I attributed to a sweet, syrup-y brown leather note (I should do a side by side with Outlaw, with its brown leather and sassafras), but mayhaps it was also a part of the soda. It reminds me more of a Black Cherry Boylan Soda than a Cherry Coke, but with way less fizziness than actual soda. Unless that syrup-y quality is due to the leather, the leather and motor oil are really subtle on me. And I say this having slathered it all over, including down the length of my forearm, on Saturday. So on me, this is more Cherry Soda/Candy Hearse than Cherry Cola Hearse, emphasis on the cherry. This means there are no complaints from me! I'm curious to see if this remains cherry-centric or gets more industrial as it ages.

    Chartreuse Dragon

Rare, reclusive, and devoted to contemplation, Chartreuse Dragons make their home in high, wooded monasteries carved into moss-draped cliff faces. Its scales shimmer in shifting tones of yellow-green, laced with the scent of lime rind, crushed apothecary herbs, and translucent vegetal musks.

    Melichrous Dragon

Sweet-tempered and kind, this emotionally generous dragon has a hoard made not of gold, but of handwritten letters, warm socks, library check out cards, and old mixtapes. Famed throughout the realms for offering a listening ear and a warm hug in lieu of unsolicited advice, it roosts in sun-warmed meadows, secondhand bookstores, and antique shops, and its scales glow softly in shades of sun tea, wildflower honey, and sweet apricot.

    Landscape with Stars

My skin brought out none of the nuance of this blend. I tested this twice, because the first time I tried it, it was so lemony that I wondered if some of the lemon juice I had used to make Vaughn Vreeland's Boozy Apple Crunch Cake got on where I applied it. But no, it's all citrus and ozone on me throughout wear, with no reprieve. The neroli is the strongest note at first, but it isn't nearly as sharp or as intense as it usually is on me, and once that calms down, it's a lemon and ozone party. And I'm not getting the sugared aspect of the lemon. I would have liked to get the lavender from this, but at least the neroli was tamer than usual on my skin, and I didn't get any powdery heliotrope or indolic jasmine.

    Black Fly Butter Moon

Black Fly Butter Moon is a very strong, almost toffee-like, buttery shortbread cookie scent on me. I swear there's some orange zest in these cookies even though there's no orange mentioned, because I get it very strongly, especially during the wet phase of the scent. It stays mostly about the cookies for a while, but then I was doing dishes some hours later and was hit with a blast of coffee and cocoa which was really nice. I didn't deathmatch the two, but I think this shortbread cookie might be somewhat similar to the cookies in A Little More Tea from the 2016 Lilith scents (if I ever do deathmatch the two, I'll update this post with my results). It also has the richness of Chocolate Stout Cupcake from Yules of yore. I don't think I need a whole bottle of this one, but I think I'll hang onto my decant!

    Black Butterfly Moon 2025

This is a very purple scent that is mostly about the violet and blackberry on me, although the tuberose, orchid, and rose are definitely not far behind those notes (I think my skin just tends to amp the violet). I get some of the myrrh in the background, and dusty is an apt description of this variation of that note -- but I don't get much in the way of the scorched vanilla resin from this on my skin, except when layered with the Vanilla-Infused Frankincense and Raspberry duet. After several hours, the tuberose and orchid do end up overtaking the violet and blackberry, and I get some musk with those notes, as well as more of the myrrh. I layered a drop of these duets with the lunacy scent, and these were my experiences: Layered with Black Butterfly Moon: Vanilla and Tobacco Flower - I mostly got the dirt and sheer vanilla floating over the blackberry-tinged purple flowers of the lunacy scent. Layered with Black Butterfly Moon: Vanilla-Infused Frankincense and Raspberry - I enjoyed the combination of the two scents more than the moon on its own. I'm not sure if the lunacy scent brought out more of the vanilla-infused frankincense from this, or if this brought out more of the vanilla resin in the lunacy, or what, but I definitely get some vanilla and resin with the tart raspberry that floats over the blackberry and purple flowers from the lunacy scent, and the vanilla and resin note make me think of the Bourbon Vanilla bath oil from several years ago (deceptively sweet: bourbon vanilla oleoresin and benzoin resinoid). This isn't a scent that is typically in my wheelhouse -- I don't really enjoy fruity florals or florals with resins, but I got it to try those layering combos, and because the artwork and the goth-y scent description gave me of Yuko Ichihara from xxxHolic vibes. This isn't something I need more than a decant of, but I am glad that I decided to try it.
