    The Human Double

Among the most intelligent inquirers with whom I converse at Brighton was a lady of title. She told me that she was one of those present at the Davenport séance, held at the residence of Sir Hesketh Fleetwood. She was seated in the dark séance by the side of a gentleman whose previous scepticism, he confessed to her, was fast disappearing in the face of the facts they were witnessing, when a light was suddenly struck, and both of them distinctly saw the form of Ira Davenport glide close past them. This incident very much disturbed the confidence of Lady L—, and entirely satisfied the sceptic that imposition was practiced, and he left the room a confirmed unbeliever. I told Lady L—that, on his return to London, Mr. Ferguson spoke to me of this very fact, as one of the most curious that had yet occurred at any of the séances. He was holding, he said, the box of matches, as he usually does, when the box was snatched from his hand, and a light was struck by the invisible operator, and during the momentary ignition of the match he plainly saw a form, apparently of a human figure. He said nothing at the moment, but whispering the fact to Mr. Fay, he confirmed it, and afterwards several of those present admitted that that, too, had seen it. Mr. Ferguson, however, was not aware that anyone present supposed it to be the actual person of Ira Davenport, as no observation to that effect was made, and as Ira Davenport was seen instantly afterwards when the light was restored, fast bound to his chair, it was simply impossible that the suspicions of Lady L—or her friend could have been well founded. But, admitting that two competent witnesses did actually see the form of Ira Davenport on that occasion, it is corroborative of a very important and interesting fact, and distinct phase of these puzzling mysteries of spiritual appearances – viz., the duplication of individual form. Mr. Ferguson, who did not on that occasion recognize the resemblance to Ira Davenport, nevertheless has, as he solemnly asserts, seen at other times, when alone with them, the entire duplicated form of Ira Davenport, and a part of Mr. Fay ; and in my first conversation with the Davenport Brothers they told me, among other curious facts of their extraordinary history, that persons had said they had met one or other of them in places where they had not been. On one occasion their father went to a neighbouring shop to order some fruit, when he was told by the shopkeeper that his son Ira had just been there, and had ordered the fruit. It was, however, satisfactorily proved that Ira had not left the house, and that the man must have seen his “wraith,” or “double.” The Spiritualist, December 19, 1873 The uncanny echo of your second self: a shadow-blackened fougere steeped in an uncanny, discomfiting lavender tar.

    Fire Poppy

A rare wild herb that only grows in California, primarily where fires have recently erupted. A scent of renewal, a vibrant cascade of crimson, orange, and russet: tangerine, scarlet musk, honey absolute, red amber, pink peppercorn, and champaca. Please note: this oil is not vegan.

    Sinister Restlessness

Fear and fascination: blackened vetiver, amber smoke, clove, and oudh. …It was a sooty-black animal that resembled a monstrous cat. It appeared to me about four or five feet long for it measured fully the length of the hearthrug as it passed over it; and it continued to-ing and fro-ing with the lithe, sinister restlessness of a beast in a cage. I could not cry out, although as you may suppose, I was terrified.

    Draconic Bedtime Stories

No reviews yet!? Time to remedy that! This features an incense-y dragon's blood (not the spicy floral variety that's wonky on me) with lots of lavender and hops. I think it is relaxing. I slather this before bed sometimes and forgot there was fir in this -- I haven't noticed it, but next time I slather it, I'll have to see if I can pick it out. I decided to risk a bottle of this when the 2024 Dragoncon exclusives were up on the website, and I'm so glad I did! It's one of my favorite Con exclusives from the past few years. I may have to try to track down a back-up bottle!

    Black & White Cookie

Whatever your preferred term for this eye-catching bodega snack, its iconic design undeniably lingers in the backdrop of core New York memories. A simple, jumbo-sized treat, it unifies by transcending differences to mostly taste all like one thing!

    Black & White Cookie

On me, this is mostly a lightly chocolate-glazed cookie (because only half of the cookie is glazed in chocolate and it's not as strong as if it were like, dipped in straight-up chocolate) with an almondy note in the sugar cookie base. I like it, but I don't need more than my decant.

    Peach Sticky Rice

This is a light peach scent on me, backed by some coconut milk. Despite this having sticky rice in the name, the rice component is pretty fleeting on me.

    Apple Tree I

I do get the sun-warmed red apples from this, but the apple note with the wildflower note veers into shampoo territory. I've tried this a few times, and it used to be more wildflower-forward when the decant arrived, but it's a little more balanced after a couple of months (but like I said, somewhat reminiscent of apple shampoo). I don't dislike this, but it wasn't the apple win that I thought it would be. Apple Vulva Hair Gloss and the Harvest Moon: Apple and Oats duet were my apples of 2024.

    Woman Putting on her Stocking

This is all about the silk and skin musk on me, backed by a little bit of amber. I was here for the coffee bean, but it is very fleeting on me. It's too perfume-y to my nose, but maybe that's just my skin running away with the silk? I wish I had had a more coffee-forward experience like some of the other reviewers.

    Krampus Kreme Latte

If you don’t have access to fresh Krampus Kreme, store-bought is fine! Here’s a warm draught for the naughty-listers: hazelnuts, almonds, and coffee beans sweetened with heavy cream froth and honey and spiced with ginger, black pepper, black cardamom, and cacao.

    Krampus Kreme Latte

I've tried this three times. Twice as a test amount, once as a full-day slather. The first time I tried this, I thought it was a really creamy, almondy dark coffee scent and I was tempted to get a bottle. But the subsequent test and slather has been more about the coffee than any almond, spices, or creaminess. The coffee is very dark and smells like coffee grounds to me. I didn't get the blast of almond during the last two applications... it was mostly dark coffee grounds with a bit of honey and a hint of the spices on me. While I still enjoy it, I don't love it like I loved it the first time I tried it, and I prefer the creamy coffee of Hazelnut Lavender Latte. At least there's no funky dairy in the heavy cream froth note, though. I can see little flecks of the cacao in my decant, but I couldn't smell any cacao on my skin. I'll keep my decant and probably retest this again before it goes away, but at the moment, I don't feel I need a bottle of this one.

    Sixteenth Lash

^^ Well, I'm glad someone is loving this. 🤨 This is all cumin and dark musk on me. I'm not getting any chocolate, cinnamon, or nutmeg. The musk is somewhat grape-y on me and is one of the musk notes I hate from the Lab. And this sadly has lots of throw and was really hard to scrub off after I endured it for a few hours. If you're looking for spiced chocolate, get El Dia de los Reyes instead.

    Gently, Gently, They are Timid

Softly, softly, hear the rustle Of the Spirits airy wings; They are coming down to mingle Once again with earthly things, With their rapping, and their tapping Rap-tap-tap to wake our napping, In the restless dream of error: Hear the weird the Spirit brings – Rap-tap-tap lost friends are near you; Rap-tap-tap they see and hear you; In their mystic converse rappy They declare good Spirits happy. Gently, gently, they are timid If a medium is not there; They may leave you in delusion, And dissolve again to air. Tis no fable – beings able – Rap-tap-tap upon a table; And their language is translated, While the watch with guardian care Rap-tap-tap lost friends are near you; Rap-tap-tap they see and hear you; In their mystic converse rappy They declare good Spirits happy Spirit Rappings, lyrics by T.E. Garrett, music by W.W. Rossington A joyful undeath: candied orange and pink peppercorn, sugared freesia petals, vanilla bean, and white honey.

Beaver Moon: Violet and Vanilla Chiffon

I received a tester of this with a decant order. Violet and its brethren and I do not usually get along, but I have to say: this is probably the best scent featuring violet that I've ever tried. The violet here isn't cloying and candy-like and is more iris-like in nature, with slightly powdery edges. The vanilla is not gourmand, but it is a floofy one. I love how the vanilla just billows out and softens the edges of the violet note. I'm also reminded of when I've layered something like Hanami with its sharp wisteria with Antique Lace 2017, but the way the vanilla just unravels in this and gets stronger over time, mingling with the floral note, is just beautiful. I think this one will be really popular.

    The Mulberry Tree in Autumn

Desiccated mulberries, yellowing mulberry leaves, lemon peel haze. Vincent Van Gogh

    The Mulberry Tree in Autumn

I've tried this a few times. Although it features the Lab's dead leaves note, the dead leaves here are not as harsh as they are in other blends. The lemon peel is strongest during the wet phase of the scent, floating over the dead leaves note, and then the mulberry joins in -- I'm not very familiar with mulberry and only have had dried ones once, but I agree with HerbGirl's description of the berry, and I do think this is unlike any other berry I've smelled from the Lab before. Over time, this becomes less about the lemon and dead leaves and more about the mulberry backed by the dead leaves and just a hint of the lemon. While this isn't something I feel the need to grab more of, I am glad to have gotten to experience the mulberry note, and I think the scent captures the artwork perfectly.

    Snakes in the Berry Sonker

Snake Oil slithering into a pan of baked blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries in a warm pastry crust, topped with vanilla ice cream and molasses.

    Snakes in the Berry Sonker

I like this way more than The Serpent in the Berries, which was like a synthetic strawberry and musk scent on me. The berries in this meld together in a way that it's hard to isolate them, although I definitely am getting more of the darker berries than any raspberry from this. You can tell they aren't fresh berries, but baked ones that have been sugared up, but there's no distinct pastry when I apply this, nor do I get any vanilla ice cream from it at any point during wear (although that could change with age). I get Snake Oil's musk and spices with the berries, but not much patchouli or vanilla. I do agree that it's like a dark fruit variant of Snake Oil. I enjoy this enough to keep my decant, but I definitely prefer Snake Oil Jelly Doughnut.

    Snakes in the Coconut Cake

This is foodie (non-suntan lotion-y) coconut with Snake Oil's musk and spices on me. I don't specifically smell cake, and I don't get the musty patchouli from this that I got from of last year's snek variants. While this isn't a huge win for me (because I'm not big on coconut and wanted more of the cake aspect with it), I imagine those who love coconut would enjoy this.

    Porcelain Krampus

Happy EIGHTEENTH ANNIVERSARY to our Krampus perfume! Brown leather and a bundle of switches encased in pale white orris root and rice powder, translucent white musk, Himalayan ambrette seed, and milky vanilla.
  24. doomsday_disco

    Porcelain Krampus

This one ended up being too perfume-y for me, sadly. The leather doesn't seem to be the sweet, smooth kind of brown leather that I enjoy, and the orris in this has some sharp iris-like qualities to it, while the ambrette seed adds some muskiness in the background (along with the actual musk, but the ambrette is more noticeable on me). There is some powderiness from the rice powder, but I'm not getting the vat of baby powder I usually get from most scents featuring orris. Alas, the vanilla never emerged on my skin. There is not enough sweetness here to tame the sharp, iris-like aspect of this scent. I'd recommend this more to someone who wants something more traditionally perfume-y than someone looking for leather. (On the other hand, I guess I'm lucky not to have had the fruity experience of some reviewers?)
