BPAL

  • Favorite Scents
I love sweet and subdued scents that seem very gentle and feminine at first, but then lure you in and knock you out with an unexpected twist. I am particularly fond of jasmine, rose, neroli, vanilla, honey, and anything that makes me think of a warm breeze on a cool autumn afternoon.

    Blood Kiss

I really tried with this one. I wanted to at least be able to say I attempted to expand my horizons away from my typical, foody-sweet tastes. I couldn't take Blood Kiss, though: I caved and scrubbed it off after five minutes. The clove, the musk, and the vetiver all come together to smell like dirt. Freshly-dug dirt. Keep it away.

    The Haunted Palace

In the bottle, this reminds me of a sweet orange sherbet with just a tiny hint of amber in the background. It seems to be a mysterious and rather unexpected scent for a perfume named "The Haunted Palace." Upon application, the scent changes dramatically and the floral notes are very clear, crisp, and clean. I don't think they're overpowering, but this wouldn't to be a blend for one who finds floral scents to be particularly noxious. The dry-down makes me think of the Coty face powder my grandmother wore, which isn't really a bad thing, mind you. It's not an "old lady" smell by any means. It's just a surprisingly floral, and faintly feminine blend that I find to be intriguing and full of nostalgia. The scent of captured glory, indeed. This is a dainty, lovely scent and I really do enjoy it, even if I don't think I would wear it everyday.

    Pink Phoenix

Okay... let me preface this by saying girly scents are my thing. Pink, girly, bubblegum, and strawberry are four adjectives that mean "must buy" in my world. After reading so many lovely reviews here, I knew I had to get an imp of Pink Phoenix. Perhaps now you can understand my disappointment when I say: this fragrance makes me want to gag. I almost wonder if I got the wrong imp. I can *almost* smell a faint whiff of plasticky strawberry. But all I can really smell is musk. A noxious musk mixed with a faint whiff of plasticky strawberry. The combination is so grotesque that I am actually reminded of those cheap industrial-smelling toilet bowl cleaners, just dropped into the bowl to do whatever it is those things do. Ugh. And this was all IN THE BOTTLE. When I put it my wrists, the smell only intensified. I had to wash it off. I am dismayed.

    Beaver Moon 2005

This smells exactly like yellow cake batter--the kind you can't help but lick from the spoon once you've poured most of your batter into cupcake tins. Both in the bottle and on my skin, Beaver Moon maintains this amazingly warm, deliciously butter-sweet scent that honestly makes me hungry. And my God, does it linger. A few hours after application, I could still smell the delicious scent of warm cupcakes with a cream cheese frosting. Now, about 10 hours after I first applied the oil, the fragrance has settled into a scent that almost reminds of of hot cocoa. This fragrance is dee-lish. I don't know if I could wear it a lot, though. Why? Because I'd be tempted to bake cupcakes upon every application. And there's only so much temptation a girl can resist before she gives in.

    Glasgow

I'm not sure how I feel about Glasgow. I want to really like it. The description is pure poetry; I could also see the mist floating across a quiet, never-ending greenscape. In the bottle, I think it's absolutely horrid--like bitter sea water. If I'm honest, it almost faintly reminds me of urine. At any rate, it's far more aquatic than I had anticipated. On my skin, it maintains the aquatic-ness for about 10 minutes before it slowly morphs and a fainter, slightly sweeter scent emerges. Once it's dry, I can just barely locate the blackberry, which I believe is responsible the faint bitterness of the scent, over all. Though I do somewhat appreciate the scent after the 20 minute mark has passed, I don't think I'd buy a full-size bottle.

    Midwinter's Eve

I do believe I am in love. Upon opening the bottle, I find I am reminded of my beloved Snow Fairy shower gel from LUSH. There is a candy sweetness about this oil, and that is probably why I love it so much. Of course, as with all BPAL oils, this candy sweetness has an edge. There is a very cool, very tart undertone that balances the sweetness and creates a blissful harmony of scents. It's like Sweet Tarts for your skin! I'd highly recommend this fragrance for anyone who loves sweet, soft, girly scents.
  7. TheFairestLady

    Devil's Night

A very strong, strictly Autumnal blend that makes me think of walking on a crisp, October evening with dried leaves crunching under my feet. There is sugar and spice with a hint of pumpkin pie. A bit too strong for me. And I can't help but smell something that reminds me of Avon's Skin-So-Soft bug repellent. Ick.
  8. TheFairestLady

    The City in the Sea

I would imagine this would make a lovely scent for one's significant other, though it is slightly too masculine for me, personally. I bet this would go beautifully with LUSH's Sea Vegetable soap. In the bottle, it smells rather... unappealing, almost like some strange blend your great-grandfather might have worn. Upon application, however, it shifts into a fainter, more comforting scent--one that reminds me of standing on a beach as the tide comes in, tickling my sand-covered toes. Yet there is something else, something undefinable. There is a sense of florality, almost, as though wild flowers might be growing among the sand dunes and tall grass. Nice, but not for me.
  9. TheFairestLady

    All Saints'

Upon opening my imp of All Saints, all I could think was: Old Lady Face Powder. You know, that kind of powder your grandmother used to wear on her face that turned her all white and smelled strongly of musk and dried flowers. And that is exactly what it smells like dry. Too much of a strong, floral scent for me.
  10. TheFairestLady

    Samhain

Opening the bottle, I was almost knocked over by how strong this one was. It smelled of an overdose of apple pie spice and nutmeg. When it dried, however, there was something special about Samhain. Something that seemed to bring about a memory I still cannot place. There's a definite air of Autumn sunset in this blend. I can only feel the chill of the faint, warm wind on the back of my neck and the crunch of leaves under my feet. If I close my eyes, I can almost see a lit jack-o-latern casting its shadows onto the October night. Strong, but lovely.

    Jailbait

Upon first opening my Jailbait imp, I was intoxication by a familiar scent from childhood: Bubblegum. Delicious, pink bubblegum. Oh, happy joy for a pink, girly-girl like me! Just a few moments after applying the perfume, the scent slowly changed into something far more complex. There was still a bubblegum faintness, but it was overpowered by a subtle, sexy cinnamon and spice scent that simply radiated off of my skin. Much to my dismay, however, this perfume broke me out into itchy, red splotches. I had never had this happen with a perfume before, so I am deeply saddened and wish I knew what it is that causes the reaction. The cinnamon, I suppose. Curses. It's a beautiful perfume with a great complexity about it. Perfect for young ladies and sexy women alike.
