This is a soft scent (i.e. no sharp edges or strident notes), but very strong. It smells old-fashioned, like someone’s grandmother (not *my* grandmother, who has never worn perfume), and I don’t mean that in a bad way – it’s soothing and calming, like a hug from someone who’s much older and wiser and knows that whatever it is that’s upsetting you really *doesn’t* matter that much in the long run. I’m getting visuals of an old-fashioned dressing table with violet or lilac-scented soap and dusting powder. Nice. I can’t comment on the voodoo properties, as I have nothing upsetting me at the moment, but I’ll update my review if and when I have a chance to test that aspect of the oil. Update: I unfortunately had an opportunity to test out the voodoo properties of this oil back in late March-early April. It works.

My first thought was "Blueberries?" It's fruity when wet, which didn't bode particularly well for me, as I tend to dislike fruity candy-like scents. I needn't have worried. It's more an impression of fruitiness than actual fruitiness, if that makes any sense - soft and ethereal. I really like it.

Wet: Lemon. Cheerful lemon, though, not gloomy. This is a cold glass of really strong lemonade on a hot day. Dry: Gah, strident lemon. I like lemon, but this really does smell like bathroom cleaner on me. Gave me a headache.

Oh dear. I smell like hummus. How very unfortunate. (Queen of Sheba and Snake Oil must have a note in common, as they both did very similar, very nasty things with my body chemistry.)

BPAL to represent each month, each season? Holidays, like Christmas?

Golden Priapus smells like Christmas to me - lots of pine with a whisper of vanilla. Three Witches is the olfactory embodiment of fall. -
Three Witches is awesome. Cinnamon and clove, lots of gorgeous spice, smells like fall. Yum. Eclipse and Chimera didn't work on me. Eclipse was too boozy, Chimera way too sweet. Old Port-au-Prince has some lovely spices in it - not cinnamon, but I think clove's in there somewhere. It's really nice. Worth a shot. Old Morocco is spicy, but not cinnamon or clove spicy. More like cardamom or coriander, I think. Not really what you're looking for.

Wet: Whoa, almond! Dry: Okay, much better. Mmm. MMMMM. This is delicious. Gorgeous, warm, exotic spices. A fabulous fall/winter scent, but also great for a hot, humid summer night. I agree that this would probably smell fantastic on a man, but it smells pretty damn good on me as well!

I quite like this one. It's only the second voodoo blend I've tried, but from what I hear they're all somewhat herbal, and this is no exception. At first it's soapy-herbal - not offensive, but not wonderful. Drydown is an absolutely lovely, subtle, slightly sweet skin scent. I *really* like it. I don't know about its voodoo effects, but the scent is delightful.

Oh yeah. This is a good one. Wet: smells shockingly similar to Florida Water (which is good, as Florida Water is one of my favorite scents). Like Florida Water, it manages to be cool and refreshing and spicy (warm spices, no less) at the same time. Really nice. Drydown: It's woodsy-earthy on me now. Subtle. I don't know that I'd wear this one as a perfume, but it's the perfect scent to wear for meditation. I'm going to play with this one some more, but I suspect it'll be a 10 mL purchase. Edit: Oh, hell. Now I'm getting Eau de Pencil Shavings. Still definitely like it for meditation purposes, but definitely not for a perfume. Edit again: I'm giving The World another shot, and it's marvelously calming and grounding. Oh my god, I love it. Still not a perfume, but much more of a "mental health" scent. I will be buying a bottle in my next order.

It's official - BPAL's amber does absolutely magical things on my skin. In the imp and while wet, this oil smells of Juicy Fruit gum. Not unpleasant, but nothing I'd choose to wear as a perfume. The drydown, however, is gorgeous. Beautiful powdery amber.

Oh man, massive deja vu. This smells exactly like my aunt's house in New York. I haven't been there since I was very young, but as soon as I smelled this oil I was transported back there. It's not a particularly pleasant association. Dark, somewhat dingy, small and crowded with linoleum floors. I'm sure that this scent could be lovely on someone else, but the strong deja vu is ruining it for me.

This is quite masculine on me. I smell no lemon or vanilla. I do wear men's cologne occasionally, but this one smells too much like deodorant soap for my liking .

All the glory, warmth and majesty of the sun -- darkened. A delicious blend of bitter almond, vanilla, frankincense and heliotrope, with a drop of cinnamon. In the bottle and wet: strong, sweet almond. Dry, initially: sweet cinnamon, but not Big Red sweet like Chimera. I like this version of cinnamon better. Drydown: Hmm, has become really boozy. I mean REALLY boozy. I smell like I spilled Goldschlager or Aftershock on myself. Not perfect for me. The best cinnamon blend I've tried so far is Three Witches - all the gorgeous spice, none of the overwhelming sweetness.

This is an interesting oil. At first application I thought "Eh...it's light, nondescript, and plasticky." Then I took a nap, woke up two hours later, and while making lunch thought "What's that lovely smell?" It was the Vanilla Bean. It had intensified, deepened, becoming a rich, non-sugary vanilla scent. Probably my favorite vanilla out of all the vanilla fragrances I've tried (I am *not* a vanilla fan - I tend to find it overly sweet and cloying). Very nice. Would probably be good to layer with scents that need just a touch more sweetness.

Headshoppy! (Guess that would make sense, with the cloves and the incense.) Sweet-headshoppy rather than patchouli-headshoppy, though. Smells exactly like walking into a vintage clothing store. Nice, but I doubt I'll reach for it much.

Just about straight pine on me, though a tiny bit of vanilla does show through much, much later. Smells like Christmas. Rather pleasant, actually. Friend fell in love with this one, so I gave her the imp.
-
This one was quite nice on me - smelled like fall. Spicy cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg - really gorgeous. Perfect Halloween scent. This was what I wanted Jack to be for me. Didn't really change much from wet to dry stages, which was a good thing for me because I loved the wet scent. I'll need another imp of this, as my best friend fell in love with it and I sent her off with mine.

Fruity with a very strong plastic undertone. Remember how those Strawberry Shortcake dolls used to smell of fake fruit and hard smooth plastic? Yeah, that's what my skin does to this blend. Not a keeper.
-
This one isn't working for me - I'm getting mostly sharp, acrid cedar with very little floral component. Up for swap it goes!
-
Mmmm. Now *this* I like very much. A positively gorgeous rich, old-fashioned floral with a powdery drydown. Lovely. This one is a keeper. Edit: I freaking love this scent. I'm sitting here with my nose glued to my wrist. It's beautiful and ladylike yet calming and soothing at the same time. Definite 5 mL purchase.

This one is horrible on me. HORRIBLE. I can't even give a good description of what it smells like, as I had to scrub it off just about immediately. Perhaps jasmine just doesn't work with my skin chemistry, because I know that honeysuckle is usually lovely on me.
-
Wet, this smells like cherry cough syrup. Dry and after about half an hour, it mellows out into a smoother, less jarring cherry-vanilla. Thick and soft. Could be a very nice cold-weather scent (I can picture wearing it with a snuggly sweater), but I just don't love it the way I love O. Will be swapped.

Deep South, Southern belles, Gone with the Wind...
Electra replied to lavinia's topic in Recommendations
I'm wondering about the single-note Spanish Moss, myself. I got Old New Orleans in my latest order, but it's not really doing the trick for me. I'd recommend anything with honeysuckle in it (not sure if there's such a scent, but it's worth checking). Edited because I'm testing Black Dahlia right now (magnolias), and it's lovely. Very Southern belle to me, anyway. A beautiful, rich, old-fashioned floral. -
Very light scent. Smells of almonds and Play-Dough. Not for me.
-
Light, clean floral. So light and clean, in fact, that I can barely smell anything at all. I'll give it another try in a few days in case I have olfactory burnout from sniffing my new imps. It's pretty enough, from what I can tell, but not a keeper if it remains this elusive. Edit: Upon second wearing, it really is lovely - a shame that I can still barely smell it. A bit soapy, a bit creamy - I agree with the reviewers above who said that it smells like expensive soap or lingerie. Very subtle and feminine. I like it too much to swap the imp, but it's too faint to justify a 5 mL purchase. Unless I can figure out a way to scent my lingerie with it, that is.
