Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?
sofaking6 replied to Nadirah's topic in Recommendations
Unfortunately I bet the LE Parlement of Foules would be perfect. I also like Two, Five and Seven for a green, dewy kind of rose. -
I get total spicy chai tea (unsweetened)...mm the clove is luscious. I can smell the spices but on my skin the tea is easily the dominant note, and it never lets up. This lasts a long time on me and does not morph.

Of course nobody has thought of my little underloved darling, Tezcatlipoca. The lab's awesome metallic drying to dusty hot leather. Ultraviolet...eucalyptus drying to violet so intense it's hardly floral.

I was askeered to try this since cinammon usually burns me, but I am determined to review all the CD IV scents so I gave it a brave swab...and it came out all yum! I'm really surprised that my skin showed no reaction to the spice. I get all of the notes in here...I love the sweet pine sap, so far there hasn't been a BPAL pine that I haven't loved. Right off the bat it's sweet pine and cinnamon...like breakfast in Vermont in the fall. As it starts to dry, the vanilla becomes clear, and the clove, too!! Honestly, for me the only problem is that it's so sweet it makes me hungry, and I don't like that. But for fans of gourmand scents you should definitely give Pickled Imp a try.

Not totally CD but Xanthe the Weeping Clown (Carnivale Diabolique) has a "spun sugar" in it that is very back-teeth-on-edge sweet. I love it. Gennivre L'Artiste du Diable has sugar cane in it, that's a lovely sweet tea blend. There's Kill-Devil which I have not tried but a lot of people really like. Let's see.. Horreur Sympathique - Sooooper sweet. OMG Shango is a must, sugar cane and chili pepper. It may work on you or not but you totally have to check it out. Have fun

Thalassa is very pretty, but I like Undertow even better. It's very oceanic and seems to have a little more depth (metaphorically) than some of the more floral aquatics.

I was expecting a very different scent here, with the salt peter and pepper...but it is amazingly gorgeous. I love the imagery and the deep, rich, smoky sweetness that lasts and lasts, all through the night and half the next day. There isn't much to add to all of the descriptive reviews above. Whoever noted that if you caught a whiff of this on someone walking by you would be completely intrigued by them is right on. I'm intrigued by myself! I layered this with Snake Oil to try and boost the throw and that is some golden shiznit right there.

When I first put this on, I didn't have the notes in front of me and the first thing I thought was, why is Hated Vetiver suddenly delicious on me? I really like deep dark scents but feel I miss out on so many by not being able to wear vetiver, and so the Blasphemare Reliquary is really a jewel for me. The incredibly rich resins with the slightly dusty copal is mesmerizing and beautiful. I cannot make out the rose on its own which is rare since I normally amp amp amp it. Just a testament to how well-blended this is. This will be a bottle for me, and one that will see a lot of use! This does not morph much while it dries - it lightens a bit and becomes more identifiable as incense is really all. The throw is close-to-medium...but it did waft all over my car while I was driving into work Gorgeous.

I was really looking forward to this blend because of the mint and violet...of course, I get hardly any mint or violet and all mushroom gasses and swamp mist...and I love it!! It's mysterious but also joyous. It's a mist that nurtures planting and growth. This is a very bright herbal, and yes I do think I smell a little grapefruit. After drydown I can smell the mint and get just a hint of violet. I could definitely see this blend being a winner for a lot of people.

Woo! This imp really screams when I put it on. In the imp it's more earthy/woodsy, but man once it got on my wrist it started screaming like an evil Sweet-tart. I am pretty sure it's apple but maybe with grapefruit as well. After maybe 2 hours it calmed down enough for me to smell woods and a little coconut. Very intense, fun little imp.

In the bottle: kind of sour and woodsy. On right away: loads of sandalwood and bitter florals, but from arm's length I do smell the tropical florals in here. On dry: PLUMERIA! Sometimes my skin really does right by a scent! I adore plumeria, it's so sweet and joyful and so is this blend. The moss keeps it very green. I can smell the sandalwood for about an hour, and then it's down to straight florals. It does fade @ an hour after that. I have noticed that to entice out the florals it really helps to warm it up a lot. The more I rub my wrists the more the sweetness emerges.

In the bottle: HONEY, HONEYSUCKLE, JASMINE with a nice bit of fig/apricot back there...it almost smells like blackberry to me. On wet: sour honey, tonka and jasmine...not exactly luscious but still very intriguiging and actually pleasant..I think it may be the bitter of the almond causing the sourness. Yeah the throw is honeysuckle, jasmine and carnation...a little reminiscent of Hell's Belle. On dry: sweet honey and fruit...but not too sweet, not too fruity. The honey is so soft and enveloping, this is a very warm, loving blend like an embrace.

Oh MAN...this is beautiful. The chill is pretty unique and mellow among BPAL winter blends, and even right away the musk and benzoin jump up and dance. The plum sort of glazes the florals...they are on their own but also purple and a little fruitylicious. Every note is gorgeous, distinct and perfectly complementary. On wet, L'Inverno truly sings. As it dries, the pine fades and the plum and florals take center stage. After about 3 hours it is down to skin musk and benzoin.

I smell mostly the sleet and the honeysuckle. I love this...very chilly and citrus-sweet. I am always wary of cedar and sandalwood but they are very well-behaved and do not make my head hurt. When I get flashes of the orchid it's so beautiful, I wish it were a bit stronger presence...but honestly, like puck_nc just said, this is a room spray that is on another level, and it's very, very well-done. I will definitely use up this bottle, probably quickly.

The Antikythera Mechanism

I tried this on my bf and me at the same time, and we both loved it on ourselves and each other (I know that sounds dirty but really we're talking dabs on wrists while watching CNN)....on wet it definitely has a metallic kind of tang to it, and the woods, vanilla and tobacco are so finely blended and so strong that I can't think of anything (having never tried Glowing Vulva) to compare it to. It's gorgeous and very sexy with a lot of personality. As it tries the notes stay really blended and I love the tobacco that isn't burnt. It's dark and sweet and heavy and light without having any conflicts between the notes. Love it! -
In the imp: incense and opium Wet: Lovely ozone and incense with the sweetness of opium, just gorgeous! but... As soon as this starts to dry on me, it's all smoke. I would love it if it could retain that exciting wet stage.

I love red musk, and I certainly get a lot of it from The Grindhouse! It's very sweet and musky, and for me I only get the florals at the beginning - mostly iris, some magnolia, no rose I could detect. I get no vanilla ever and almost no clove, which is sad becaue I was really looking forward to a red musk/vanilla/clove thing. But my skin sucks everything else up and after a couple of hours it's all sweet red musk, almost like dragon's blood. It's nice but Mania ends up the same for me, so I'm not overwhelmed. But I am really wondering what aging would do for this blend.

I am another that gets more gardenia and tea than chrome. Although maybe it is the chrome note that is helping me love the tea? I am loving this blend immensely...it is a gorgeous clean, *almost* creamy floral/tea with this salty/sweet undercurrent that keeps me huffing my wrist. It morphed very little in the 3 hours I had it on last night, though I couldn't smell it anymore in the morning. Thorough love!!

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

Sandalwood, champaca and patchouli are generally head shop notes; however don't let these notes themselves steer you away from blends. Always read the reviews if something sounds incensy to you. Can you list the ones you tried and found too incense-y? The most famous and possibly the most well-loved ginger blend here is Shub-Niggurath: A blend of ritual herbs and dark resins, shot through with three gingers and aphrodisiacal spices. Sweet tasty ginger. How about La Mort Qui Danse? Maybe peppery, check the reviews: Black pepper, white ginger, Calla lily, and lily of the valley. I've found that the lab's black pepper is PEPPER, and their white pepper is not Mag Mell is a popular scent that I've never tried: warmth of amber, the puissance of white ginger and the clarity of verbena, with fresh green grass, lush sage and cleansing droplets of summer rain. Pepper! Wild English roses, French gardenia, vanilla, honey, golden ginger, blood orange, tuberose, bergamot, and geranium. Have fun! -
I had the same experience as some reviewers above; namely that on wet, I get men's cologne, but dry, I get gorgeous woodsy leathery sex. It is a slightly masculine scent and I do think I'll enjoy it more on my bf than on myself, but for those ladies who prefer something less feminine it is really lovely once it passes the wet-cologne phase.

I got a frimp of this, but honestly might have tried it anyway based on the notes...but WHOA! Very medicinal, very antiseptic-smelling. For me it went from listerine to straight myrrh and I never got the poppy, nutmeg or root scents. Stupid chemistry.
-
Reminds me of girl scout camp. Fire, bug spray and stale cigarettes some girl found in her parents' attic. It's not that it's dirty, it's that it's chemically dirty.
-
I love Katharina, it's a really bright, singing apricot. I agree about Gennivre...gorgeous and sweet, but not that fruity. Xanthe is great, kind of juicyfruit fruity and I have no issue with the pepper, it's light and just spices up the blend. And I'm pretty sensitive to spices. To my nose, Xanthe has a lot in common with March Hare. I was wearing Imp yesterday and it's just so awesome. Dirty peach, dirty musk..nasssty <g> Is Lurid gone from the GC? Such an intense blend with the fruits and ozone.

What about us poor San Diegans...driving to LA is no fun!!

I found this cool little site: http://www.scentagious.com/index.html You can look up a perfume by name, and it will tell you the top, center and base notes. I'm having fun searching BPAL for the notes in my favorite, Extravagance D'Amariche, which apparently contains: Top: mandarin, jasmine & pink peppercorn Heart: Orange blossom, violet & wisteria Base: Ambrox (synthetic ambergris), sandalwood, cedarwood and black iris
