Winter smells and scents, including the perfect winter forest
Katherynne replied to Fury's topic in Recommendations
I definitely agree with the suggestions of Ultraviolet and Cloister Graveyard in the Snow. Also Pain, which is GC, it's lavender & pennyroyal -- it smells very 'cold' to me, very herbal and cold. -
Crypt Queen is, on me, all black pepper, musk, and rose. It's gorgeous; definitely the most pepper-heavy scent I have. I distinguish between the pepper of black pepper/pink pepper/etc and the peppery bite of carnation, though -- because pink moon 07 is brightly green peppery carnation and HOD is of course, creamy carnation-pepper.
-
Hod Res. 09 is note as spicily carnation as my old 10ml. It's a little sharper, I can tell the notes melded with age. It's BEAUTIFUL though, and I love it, and I'm so glad I have it to wear in lieu of my original, which I will still continue to hoard until this 5ml is gone.

Sexy, Smutty, Seductive, Provocative... It's All in Here

My Mr goes nuts over Judith & Holofernes. Really. I don't know what it is in there... but its very honey and skin musk on me, so maybe that's why? -
^ Hanerot is more ummmm smoky, I would say, and it has this orangey hint in it. I think it's the 'olive oil' component. Lights is more vanilla-like to me and more honey-sweet. It has less of that smoke component.
-
Yeah, I just tried my imp of The Lights of Men's Lives and it is all honey and beeswax on me. It's really great.

I wish that were the case! For me, BPAL's scents with jasmine amp the jasmine highly and cause migraines. I have to be really careful with it. That is so strange they smell similar to you -- to me they don't really smell much alike! Little Bird: thank you!
-
I was hoping to love this but I think it is possibly going to give me a migraine. I am getting nothing but benzoin, maybe a hint of chili if I put my nose RIGHT up to where I applied it. Wet it smells almost like clove cigarettes, the vanilla Djarum kind. I really don't know if I like it or not. What a perplexing scent! If it doesn't give me a migraine, then I'll try it again -- if it does, I'm swapping it off ASAP. EDIT a few months later and after a few more testings: This isn't causing a migraine like I thought it would -- but the beginning is VERY strong and clove-y, almost painfully so. As it dries down, I'm getting more of the dried red chili in there. Whoever said that this oil gives them a sense of An Morrigan is correct; I get that feeling also. The vanilla takes a while to come out, maybe thirty minutes to an hour into wear. This scent is really... weird, you guys. I STILL don't know if I like it or loathe it! The vanilla end of things, when it dries way down and softens out, is kind of darkly comforting and nice. The stages it goes through getting there, though, are what I'm not so sure about. There's a dry, acrid feeling about this scent. It's almost malevolent in the beginning stages -- this oil definitely goes on with its claws out and has to be given time to dry down into something suitable. I think this might get swapped.

This is wet and sweet in the imp, much more aquatic than I was expecting. When I put it on the hyssop scent warms on my skin, and while I, too, don't know what life everlasting smells like, if that is the note of AWESOME I am experiencing, then I'm in love with it. This is an herbal, wet floral, it is extremely beautiful. It's a very serene scent. Will need a bottle.
-
To me the bottle smells somewhat cold and very herbal. As soon as it put it on it goes through a really weird, sort of clashing medicinal-resin smell, but once dry, this smells like hyssop. Pretty much smells like hyssop with dried patchouli and fruit. It's kind of a weird combination! I am all right with that, and I think I'll use my imp, but I don't think I'll need a bottle.

Purple Phoenix is the most purple scent I know of. Also The Shivering Boy is a nice icy purple.

I'm re-reviewing this years after I first tried it. This was one of the first BPALs I tried, and I sadly didn't like it back then. Well, my tastes have changed over the years -- because now I love it. The Unicorn is a softly herbal, clean scent that is perfect to wear to work. It smells very calming to me, and very white. It has that ethereal quality to it that I had hoped it would so many years ago. I love it.
-
Holy crap. I can't believe for all those years I thought I hated rose scents -- Zombi & Seance broke me through that wall, and now here I am trying on Rose Red. It is beautiful. It is Seance without the golden warmth, like a silvered and cold version of that beautiful blooming red rose. It smells like the heart of a rose in frost. I am in love with this. If it is ever reissued I am totally buying multiples.

Dude. Same. I am honestly shocked by the fact that I don't like this. On me it smells like anise. And that's all. Wow.
-
I am getting aquatics and soap and .. incense?? How bizarre. Truly, it's bizarre. I am going to give this a few more tries, but so far ...: soap to start out with incense cuts in and gets cinnamony or something water rolls over the whole thing and makes it cold & damp.
-
It smells like Dial antibacterial soap. I don't know what else to say. I'm so shocked.

Oh, man. This is strongly vanilla in the bottle, but on the skin I'm getting herbal chamomile and smoke with a thick vanilla undercurrent. I AM IN LOVE. Holy crap. The drydown is sheer smoke and bright chamomile, and the vanilla stays darkly sweet underneath. Is that darkness because it's "bourbon" vanilla? Whatever it is, I really like it -- sometimes vanilla notes are way too, hmm. Sugary-bright for me? They tend to pop with a sort of cake-like sweetness that I'm not too fond of wearing. But this, this is more thick and creamy and golden smelling. I love it. It smells awesome after a bath with a chamomile bubble bath, too, not to mention when worn with Lush's "Silky Underwear" powder -- and since I tend to use BOTH of those things really often, I'm willing to bet I'll be reaching for this a lot of the time! Now I have to decide if one bottle is enough!

Golden pear, amber, fig leaf, oakmoss, bronze musk, mahogany, patchouli, and a smattering of glittering pyrite. in all seriousness, in the bottle this smells to me almost EXACTLY like Verdandi. I love it, of course. It dries down sort of powdery though, so I think I'll be swapping it back off. I wanted more staying power with that fruit, but it all hides behind some sort of powdery nondescript scent of... well, it's so 'normal' I can't even name it.
-
my love of this is shocking. on me it is very floral, lightly spicy, and the cream isn't heavy. that must be why I am okay with it being there t all! I wanted this for its carnation, and while it's not the spiciest carnation in bpal's repertoire, it still has some spice. and I'm a fan.
-
my gods I am in love with this. I wanted to try it on image alone, since I'm a rather illustrated woman myself -- the notes in this didn't sound too awesome to me though, honestly. Skin musk? Honey? Vanilla? No thanks. However....... on me it has this almost chrome note in it, very similar to the one in Torture Queen. The honey is softer and the vanilla is more an undercurrent of sweetness, with which I am so down. I am so impressed with this; it's not at all what I expected. It's a very warm, sexy, deep scent. DH loves it as well, which helps.

Oh, wow. I am surprised by how much I absolutely love this. It comes off as mostly caramel to me in the bottle. When I put it on, it stays very sweet while wet & on the immediate drydown, with a sort of earthy-herbal undercurrent to it. It's not very "mossy" to me until a few hours have passed, and then it's a very sweet, creamy sort of moss. I absolutely adore this. When I put it on after giving the bottle a good roll, it's a lot more spicy & earthy than it is without me doing that, I've discovered. I can smell the dust in it and the vetiver. Complete win.
-
Yeah, I don't know what happened here, but -- on me, this is a dead ringer for Cloister Graveyard in the Snow, which I already have. It's a slightly sweet mint with a bare whisper of herbal tones underneath... Therefore I won't be needing a bottle!

On me, Lady Lilith? Dead ringer for Mme Moriarty. No, I don't understand it either. I'm planning to put one on one arm and one on the other tomorrow to see how close they actually are, but wow. I had to double-check the bottle to make sure I put on the right one. This is crazy. ETA: I wore Lady Lilith on one arm and Mme on the other day to make sure I was not insane. Nope. Not insane. Lady Lilith is a dead ringer for Mme on me, the only differences are a lack of staying power (whereas mme stays all day) and Lilith doesn't have that pungent undertone that Mme has, which I assume is the patchouli playing around. This is just -- nuts!! I love it, obviously, but it seems redundant in the face of my Mme backup

Hmm. I was able to get my hands on a decant of this from a very sweet BPALer. I have to say it's a very green apple! Wet, it's very crisp and tart and fresh. On the drydown it seems to be getting more perfume-y, more snowy. It lacks the chill I thought it would have, and I'm disappointed about that, but it is still a very lovely apple scent. I agree it gets more musky as it dries. This isn't Verdandi's rich apple, which I think honestly has my heart and soul forever. But I love this imp and I will use it 'til it's gone. Thank God I finally found ONE LE that I don't need to track down a 5ml of!
