    Ethereal Scents?

FAEU BOULANGER I thought this was an effect of bioluminescence, but it seems there is no source. Could it truly be a soul trapped within this glass dome? Impossible. Mushroom gases, swamp mist, green mint, and bog violet

    Honey of Friendship Bath Oil

this has a nice, rich smell. i can't wear all honey notes but this one works scent wise for me provided I apply it in small doses. I've worn it applied sparingly in my hair or massaged into my skin but around the calves, ankles. I don't want the honey amping too much even though it's a nice one (some bpal honey scents such as womb furie, blooming flowers of spring, and imaginer are stunning on me. a few others just smell off on my chemistry.) as for intention: every time I have worn this, the effect has been phenomenal. I've put it on prior to social occasions during times of high stress or fatigue where i didn't want life's craziness to get in the way of my enjoying the company of others. each and every time I've ended up coming home, refreshed and revitalized and recharged from fantastic social encounters. above and beyond what i'd expected when I'd left my house earlier in the night. each time I've remembered after the fact that, oh, yeah! I had this magic goodness on. in short, I'm a believer. this stuff resonates with me and it's a bit of a lifesaver. thank you, Beth!
  3. the worm moons have the dirt note with a layer of elegant perfume (maybe a lily note??). goofballs has the dirt note with a tuberose-flower layer zombie has dirt and roses burial has dirt and flowers penny dreadful has dirt and cookies yorick also has dirt with other notes the lab's etsy has the classic graveyard dirt scent listed, which you could then layer other perfumes of your choice!

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

Jacobs ladder and la lugubre gondola aren't dupes, but are in the same family. Llg is a rare, but jl is a yule that repeats every now and again and is currently on the lab's etsy. Sorry did you mean Ebay? no I meant etsy

    Tattie Bogle

this was a trading post frimp. this is one of those bpals that is simply a gorgeous perfume. it's strong, it's smokey. I get fantastic sour resins and rich woods. it really does evoke smokey autumnal air. I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago when I was curious about how the lab does gunpowder and it's been one of my most reached for scents ever since.
  7. Put yourself on the waiting list for Spider and pick up a bottle of aubin grandpied bunmanchi from the sales page while you wait. I think bluestblood had a couple on her sales page... Vicomte is amazing, as is his associate, the marquise de merteuil (sp)

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

Well I haven't smelled the gentlemen, but how about Spider, the convocation or vicomte de valmont? Another scent that should be hoarded but alas appears frequently on the sales pages is aubin grandpied bunmanchi. It's amazing in hot summer weather and nice when it gets colder, too.

    Recommendations - Haute Macabre

there is something about the marquis de carabas that is strangely similar to haute macabre. it's not a sweet nor feminine scent, but I wear it and adore it and there's that strange similarity. I second the suggestion for Liz and as above. perversion is great too. you might also enjoy urd, shoggoth, vixen.

These Were the Four Loves Faded Bath Oil

this is a strange and wonderous creature, difficult to describe. in the bottle and first applied (I've so far been using this mostly in my hair) I can smell the coconut and honeysuckle over a foundation of "creamy, pale neon green, and 'other.'" the coconut is not sunscreenish nor is it foodie. there is a touch of brightness from the mint, which is otherwise subtle and not at all toothpasty (I have honestly never had a bpal mint evoke toothpaste). something in this scent reminds me of the green musk in palus nebularum, laughter of loki, the frogges plague scents. i will definitely try layering this with palus in the very near future. this morning on the way to work i stopped in to grab coffee. the kid who took my order was leaning across the counter to get closer to me. "are you wearing some kind of amber resin?" it was this stuff, in my hair..."yes, I am. sorry if it's too strong." "no. no it's amazing. absolutely amazing." he kept huffing at me during the remainder of our transaction. he's right. the amber in this combination is unusual and remarkable. very different from the other resiny blends I am prone to hoard. a few reviewers have gotten a tropical feel from this. for me, this is otherwordly. a beach on a foreign planet found in a 60's dell fantasy fiction paperback. if this pops up on etsy, please save me a bottle!

Where do I go from here?

I suggest reading the reviews of the scents you love and try to spot the other reviewers who share your taste and or skin chemistry...some migh do one but not both. then keep an eye out for their reviews to help you suss out future fun scents to try. It doesn't look like you've tried a lot of leather scents, another whole family to love or avoid. Do you like tobacco scents? Vanilla? Of your listed scents, I like and wear elf and Vixen ( blood kiss Bonbon). 51, voodoo and Alice are nice on me but I don't really wear them. The others I don't know or don't care for. Scents I like that I think/hope you might like are marquise de merteuil, haunted, black forest, urd, crossroads, czernobog, coyote, le lethe, event horizon, how doth the little crocodile, Hollywood Babylon. Also jareth and Liz, although imps may not be as easy to come by. Good luck!

    Sinus Amoris

this arrived yesterday. of course I rushed to try it on first thing; patience was not happening. on my skin there was the tiniest hot kick of cayenne/sharp spice*. just enough to catch my attention right up front and that was the last I saw of it. next up was a blend of champaca with sandalwood. spicy sandalwood, like an Indian grocery store indeed. sinus morphed quite a bit over the next few hours and each stage was lovely. sometimes it was champa heavy, other times the sandalwood heaved out to the forefront, sometimes it was a champaca/vanilla tango duet. if, over time, it evolves into any of those stages, embraces all of them, etc, I'm down. this is nice, rich intriguing. today for kicks, I deathmatched it against skekZok, the ritual master, another decadent champaca scent. next to sinus amoris, skekzok's champaca is bright and brash, and the hyssop stands out dramatically. next to skezok, the biggest notes in sinus amoris are the vanilla and the sandalwood. while the skeksi is powerful and ostentatious, sinus is coming across all smooth and rich and suave. they play very well together and are each nice! I would say having both is only redundant if you are "meh" on champaca. I'm not. I'll be keeping and wearing both of these. *(meaning scent, not skin burn! there was no skin burn at all ever...unlike with real love, I remain unscathed!) **also, doesn't "the bay of love" sound rather yachtrock-ish?

    Nice Candle

This is beautiful! Bright juicy strawberries wrapped in a sugared vanilla musk. I want to drink this. It's strangely both sweet and sophisticated.

    The Demon's School Atmosphere Spray

If House of Unquenchable Fire is a ruthless and beautiful female, this is her swarthy, handsome, right-hand man. A bit of a scoundrel when he needs to be, he gets away with murder because of his pretty pretty face. This is a rich masculine champa scent. Subtly smokey (this doesn't reach the dramatic levels of chestnuts roasting on an open pyre or bonfire) and the vetiver is sly and discreet. It enhances the scent without calling attention to itself. Very nice!

House of Unquenchable Fire Atmosphere Spray

Incredibly beautiful. A vanilla champaca scent that is regal and smooth and feminine. The name and story imagery conjure a powerful woman, absolutely stunning and with impeccable taste but a touch ruthless. This is a favorite atmo to scent scarves and clothes. If you like champaca, this scent should be right up your alley...and all over your clothes.

    Dark Rosaleen

this is absolutely beautiful. I have too many of the lab's woods/pine/forest scents already. enough that I really didn't need another one...except that this beauty, even when death matched against all others, kept calling to me. oakmoss and pine/this smells like the most beautiful fairy tale forest when wet. the amber and frankincense are luminous. I dabbed some on at 10am this morning. it's now 8pm and I'm still surrounded by the amber & frank with the barest shadow of pine. stunning.

    Searching for the Perfect Vanilla?

RR is amazing! Did some strangeness in the proportion work for you? on me, it was a sandalwood vanilla with a twist.

    Bard

Soft rich vanillic woods with a honey note that rises up and then behaves on my skin the way beeswax often does, which means it moves front and center. It's a pleasant warm beeswax scent from that point on.

What BPAL would this fictional character wear?

he relies on his sense of smells so heavily, it would need to be something light that would allow other smells to still pop. this is more of a related thing than an answer, but in the mark waid daredevil comics, matt goes crazy for the smell of women wearing clive christian perfume...the most expensive perfume in the world, with notes of jasmine, carnation, cardamom, lemon, benzoin and bergamot. foggy would smell like sweat and tears and paper and ink and spilled coffee...maybe either shadwell or mr prenderghast for him.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

aw, man. I used to love dzing! it was my last big bottle of alcohol based perfume that I ended up gifting away when I turned fully to the perume oil side. pathetically, i can't remember how it smelled enough to think of a comperable bpal right now. I'll have to sneak into a department store and try it again and see what I can come up with. regarding the flying fox, the trading post has a bath oil that was an LE last spring but still comes up on their etsy site. it is called Seblstverliebt and it is a vanilla jasmine, but it tickles the same spot in my brain as flying fox (selbstverliebt is similar to--and honestly superior to--the lush tender is the night massage bar). there was also a single note, sampaguita, that might work for you. also not an exact match, but Lily, the prostitute from the pretty deadly line, has a similar sense of jasmine to lush's flying fox and godiva shampoo. Ah, man- I wouldn't know how to explain Dzing! to people because of what it does on me- I think it's a little different than what it does for others. I can wear a lot of perfume so far- Hypnotic Poison was the only one to ever go weird on me when I tried it in a store (in 10 minutes it became salty playdoh, exactly, what the HECK). I'm curious why people completely give up alcohol based perfumes and entirely switch to oils? I've seen some others mentioning that too? If you get another whiff of Dzing, let me know what you think is similar, BPAL wise! Thanks for the possible flying fox reccomendations! I will miss the weird pot/musky thing that it does on me so much! But maybe I can find something I like even better... There's something in alcohol perfumes that smells like formaldehyde to my nose. Just a hint in the background but I notice it more since I started wearing more oil perfumes. Even my own beloved favorites, like dzing, rose elixir, untitled margiela do it, and I'd love to find bpal equivalents of all three. There's another bpal scent called lady death:savage, that is a vanilla musk with a nice jasmine in the drydown. Not an exact flying fox match, but you might enjoy it and it'll take the sting out of giving up the flying fox. I've found that all of my favorite lush scents get axed, and they took away the retro section so there is no hope if me seeing/smelling them again. Not entirely painful as lush stuff can be drying to my skin, but some of those smells are crack-like. ..as are many bpals. I hope you find new scents here that you enjoy!
