Blacker than the Raven Wings of Midnight
VetchVesper replied to Jennifurious's topic in Limited Editions
This one did not work for me. Something about the black tea with the resins makes for an interesting combo, but not one I particularly enjoy. Murky black tea is by far the strongest note on me. It reminds me a little bit of Sluagh, but that worked better for me. I get some of the more cool toned, minty anise, vs. black licorice. It burns off pretty fast though. I don't really get any vanilla, but there's definitively some dark patchouli and heavy incense notes giving this one it's weight and murk. I could certainly see why this could be a favorite for some. It's different and it's got a lot of atmosphere. Not my cup of tea though. Swap! -
I don't get soap from this. Perhaps it's b/c my imp is aged, or perhaps it's b/c I amp clove. This is a gentle clove scent on me, sweetened by a hint of the sugary carnation and rose in the background. I don't know if I love it, but it doesn't read as grandma or anything bad to me. It's feminine. Maybe a bit mysterious and maternal. It's a tad incensey. Rosy glow is a good descriptor. Hmmmm.... I'll have to wear this one a bit more and see if it grows on me. As of yet, not bad... but not a love. ETA: So after wearing this around for most of the day, I've decided I officially like it. Don't know if I'll hunt down a bottle, but if one ended up finding its way to me, I wouldn't mind. No soap. Only a tad bit of rose. Mostly a gentle, warm carnation scent on me, with the amber grounding it and keeping it from just being pure floral.

Really lovely. Chrysanthemum has a distinctive, almost fresh water aquatic smell to it that I recognize from a previous Luper, "Flowering Chrysanthemums." Kind of like a much lighter, sweeter version of marigold. The incense is gentle and warm, like Japanese incense sticks. It's understated but present. The carnation is the sweeter, more floral variety, vs. the clovey smell I usually get. Think "Maiden." DVAH is a gentle floral incense smell that's got it's own vibe. It also lasts a good while. 5 hours of wear and it's still going strong. If you like incense, but prefer softer blends, this would be a good one to check out. If you like florals, and want to try something different, this also worth checking out.

AAAAAAAAAALL the mugwort. Right up front. POW! Right in the kisser. It's a fragrance I kind of oddly like, but it's not something I would want in a perfume. But then.... The mugwort starts to soften and the chamomile starts to take over, and it's just this soft, soothing veil over everything, and the orris is just doing it's creamy powdery thing to add to the effect. At this point, I don't even smell the mugwort except maybe the faaaaaintest greenness poking up around the edges. This is very soothing/calming. I've been very depressed lately, and wearing this has put me in a better mood. It's not something I would ever wear enough to warrant a bottle, but I'm glad I have the imp, and I'll have to keep it around for those blue or anxious moods.

This starts out very strong on the chewy, tobacco note, a hint of sharpness from black leather, and something dusty and resinous adding weight in the background. It's very nice, but I think it would smell better on a man than on me. A woody patchouli starts to make it's appearance. After V's been on about half an hour it becomes much softer, the sandalwood, oakmoss, and orris come out, giving this a soft, powdery/dusty edge that still leans masculine. It makes me think of tobacco and suede. It also reminds me a bit of Mythological Scene w/a Warrior.... and would fit nicely in amongst Criminal Glamour and Disrespect for Established Authority. This is a really nice scent, very dynamic as it runs through the notes, but always edges on masculine. The black leather isn't super prominent. If you like warm, woody, resinous blends, oakmoss and woody patchouli - I'd check V out. Nok - Love that description. You ever come across that ASMR video, you let me know. ?

Astringent white tea, jasmine, and soap. ? I'm pretty sure it's the musk in this, mixed with the clean, citrusy tea, that's really amping the soap factor on my chemistry. I think this might work well for someone who likes Embalming Fluid and wants a more grandiose, floral vibe. Alas, I get no leather. This one isn't right for my chemistry.

Queen Venus with a Hood Striped Gold and Black
VetchVesper replied to Lycanthrope's topic in Lupercalia
This is very rosey on me, more so than I would like. I was hoping for a bit more balance between the rose and the resins. This is also the type of rose that tends to turn sour on my skin, though this one's not behaving TOO badly. I get a bit of myrrh and the tickle of dusty amber in the background of this, darkening and adding depth to the rose, and I wonder if there's a touch of red musk in this. It definitely smells very "red" to me. I prefer the balance in Crucifixion though, where the rose is present, but the resins take center stage. This is the opposite. This also reminds me of Importune Me No More with it's very red, full-bodied, floral feel. Not my thing, but if you love rose, I could see how you'd be a fan. -
This smells gently fruity and creamy sweet to me at first, like the creamy filling of a confection. But there's just enough soft, incensey champaca in the background to ground it and keep it from smelling too foodie. The coconut is becoming more identifiable. It's luscious, but not tropical. The champaca is really nice in this. Very soft, but present. This seems like really delectable skin scent. I think the ambrette is giving it sort of a "lived-in" feel. Subtley sexy and nibble worthy. I might have to snag a bottle of this if they re-release it. Yum. ETA: Just realized what this is reminding me. Temple Viper with that sugar cane and champaca combo. This is much gently sweet though. More fruity, less incense. I"m a fan of both though.

Very pretty, hazy, floral. I was thinking it smelled like it had soft white musk in it and almond, but that didn't seem quite right. Looking at the notes, I realize it's a powdery orris with the coconut. It's not super sweet though, and has enough going on that it's not floral overkill for me. Creamy and dreamy. Perfect for spring.

Very floral right up front. Just a big ol bouquet of flowers Flowers FLOWERS. I get quite a bit of peony up front. This is one of the fragrances, in fact, that made me realize, peony's not my jive. Then a sweet, gentle rose comes forward. Very pink. I think the lilac's in the background, adding a hint of creaminess and maybe tempering the sweetness a bit? SO many flowers. I don't know what rice flowers smell like so I don't know if I'm smelling them. This is an unabashedly floral and feminine blend. Creamy. Medium weight. Sort of demure? Peony and rose lovers might really dig it. If you like scents like The Reaper and the Flowers and Les Fleurs du Mal, you might dig it. It's not for me though.

So... without looking at the notes, I got musky peach and a white floral. Maybe magnolia or gardenia? Apparently that's gardenia. It's tempered quite a bit by the other notes though, at least to my nose. The peach and nectarine, which were the most prominent notes at first, are now making way for the gardenia, and it's becoming more and more recognizable. It doesn't want to share the stage either. It's pretty, but something about the way it plays with the frankincense's dusty resinous aspect tingles my nose and reminds me of soap. I think this is a pretty blend, but I have other gardenia scents I prefer. BUT, if the idea of a peach and white floral combo sounds nice to you, this one's quite pleasant.

Kind of herbal and green, like a nice shampoo. I DO get the ginger, and it reminds me a bit of Dubious Ginseng Formula, but that was fizzier and sharper, and this is a bit more soapy/clean smelling, but not in the typical "aquatic" way. This seems like a nice bet for someone (male or female) to wear when they just want to smell fresh and clean, but not perfumey. Not me, but pleasant none the less and probably a very good choice for summer.

This is really lovely. A musky orange blossom honey draped over a gentle base of amber and cedar that's just perceptible enough to give depth and warmth. The beeswax is there too, adding that sort of subtle glow it can give fragrances. Very pretty. i can see why this one was popular, and this coming from someone who doesn't care for beeswax and avoids cedar like the plague.

Kneel Down, Fair Love, and Fill Thyself with Tears

Very pretty and sheer. Powdery from the orris, and an almost mint like coolness. Maybe that's the musk giving it that sort of aldehyde chill? The magnolia just gives the fragrance a bit of floral roundness. Very feminine, delicate, and understated. Something you'd wear on a misty, spring day when everything looks like an impressionist painting. -
This one reminds me a bit of Sugar Skull at first, if you replaced the fruity sugar with fruity marshmallow. It's gentle, creamy sweetness mixed with indefinable "fruit" smell. It becomes more complex after it's been on for a while though, and I get sort of a ....woodiness and muskiness underneath? It's a hard smell to put my finger on. I think I get a hint of ozoney "fog." There's a lot of stuff going on, but I'm not sure what it is or whether I like it, but over the top of all of it is a soft sugary sweetness that sure seems like it SHOULD smell appealing. .... I think Alternative Facts fits the concept well.

I get loads of acrid vetiver at first sniff. I actually like the note, but it needs to tame down here some. .... Ok. It's doing so. Hmmmmm.... something else is coming out now. Very nice. Something I smell more at a distance than I do up close, but something that makes me want to get close. The tobacco perhaps? This is a very dry tobacco though, not the chewy ones I'm more used too. There's something soft and powdery in the mix. Maybe the incense? And the leather seems soft. "Leather" never smells strongly of leather on me; it tends to just merge with the blend and add something warm, wonderful, and undefinable. That's what this is doing. This reads masculine to me, but I could see wearing it as a lady of bold and intrepid daring do. It has a splash of steam punk to me. Very nice, and sure to age well.

Bought a bottle of this a while back. Finally getting around to a review! When first applied, I get a light, slightly soapy champaca, mixed with undefinable floral. It's perfumey, but not heavy. After it's been on a while, it grows stronger, but also smoother, as if the notes are blossoming into one another. The lotus is sweet, but dark and creamy rather than bubble-gummy. The leather and amber just give this a warm base. I don't know what papyrus smells like, so I don't know if I'm getting that, but there is something a bit dry and smooth over the top. Obviously, I'm a fan of this blend. It's smooth and sweet, floral, yet not cloying, incensey, yet not heavy, and it last for more than six hours on me. A beautiful spin on champaca. ?

So, I wasn't really a fan of Hearth, even though I thought I would be, but all the incensey goodness this one had to offer was too hard to resist, so I ended up with a decant. It's definitely got the "Hearth" base going on, which is acrid and sort of cloying on me, but I do like the way the incense tempers the smell. Hearthflame is better with the incense, a bit more mellow and a touch sweeter, but this is still very much a hearth, campfire, burning wood sort of smell. I aaaalmost really like it, but it's still a little rough around the edges for me. I think it would make a very nice candle, but it's just kind of loud on me as a perfume.

The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
VetchVesper replied to RaeiNarcissus's topic in Discontinued Scents
Interesting blend! I get a golden sweetness at first which I think I've smelled in other things with "spikenard," so maybe I'm starting to hone in on that note. There's also something nutty, but that quickly shifts to a warm fruitiness. Without looking at the notes, I got a mix of apple, raisins, and undefinable fruit conglomeration. Looking at the notes, I think the "raisins" are probably a mix of the grape and earthy fig, and I smell a dash of tart pomegranate as well. It's all seamlessly blended. This is like a fruit cake without the cake. It's yummy, but not really me. It was a treat to try though! -
Wow. This is all kinds of NOPE on me, which is weird b/c it seems like all the notes here should be fine, but I haven't had much luck with the Good Omens line. This is like... baby powder with something weird, earthy, and sort of funky in the background. Like, I could swear there's some oudh lurking under the other notes. Frankincense sometimes goes really powdery on me, so I'm guessing it's doing that here, and then something about the lilac just makes it floral sweet, but kind of in a rotten way? The only saving grace is it disappears within an hour. This is just no no bueno on me. A shame.

I love this one as a sleep blend. It's a dark, powdery violet nesting on a bed of dusty fir trees. I don't detect lily of the valley, which usually goes soapy on me. All the edges in this are soft. I'd say it's a unisex blend. It doesn't last more than a couple hours on my skin, but it's perfect when I want something calming and regal to wear to bed.

Starts off with a soft brush of powdery anise/ absinthe overlaying something green. There's a nice depth to it, but it's a bit nose tickling. Looking at the notes, I realize I'm smelling the lavender in this stage as part of the greenery. It's dry and herbal. After it's been on for a few minutes, the lilac begins to emerge, and Pontarlier stays a soft floral on me the rest of it's wear time. It's an interesting blend where the sum of it's parts create a unique fragrance. I'd call it a lilac blend with a lavender bite, but I'm guessing, it changes a lot depending on your chemistry. It's a bit powdery and perfumey, definitely falls into my "fancy floral" category, but I rather enjoy it on occasion.

I'm guessing this is the resurrected version, b/c the imp's label is in really good shape. Initially, I get an almost green apple tartness with something kind of dark underneath. It's a little bit bitter, a little bit soapy, and a little bit floral without being sweet. The soapiness comes out after the green apple bit recedes. It's not unpleasant to me though. It's not like - bar of soap soapiness. There is something darkly clean and green about this that I like. :) It smells like someone's been rolling around in Grimm forest greenery. I think it would work for a guy or a girl.

Ok guys. Grab it while it's still there. This is good stuff. I was pretty heart broken Vampire Lace sold out so quickly. The notes in Lycan Lace are a bit iffy for my, but I decided to trust the lab. I haven't smelled a bad lace yet. This is no exception. It's much gentler than I expected, and extremely well blended. The lace note is right up front with a soft backing of pine, rose, and tobacco that blend seamlessly. Although I can tell they're each in there, they really come off as one note. The rose isn't floral. The pine is very understated, mostly just adding to a bit of dusty nose tingle feel, and the tobacco is soft, dry, and warm. After it's been on a while, a dry earthiness comes out. Again... dusty and VERY much like a pleasant spin on moldering cloth. This isn't a wet, loamy earth note. It's really kind of fascinating, and I could totally see THIS being the smell of a vampire - clad in old lace and fresh risen from his dusty tomb. Ok... NOW the rose is becoming more pronounced and floral. It's lovely, like desiccated petals. I was worried this might be like Zombie, which I don't like, but it's not. It's more like La Pierreuse got dried out as a bouquet and wrapped with old lace. I'm hoarding this. LOVE

This is mostly coconut and musky milk on me. It's not sugary or almondy. It's an almond milk specifically. It smells like a complex Obatala. I'm not getting any honeysuckle. Pleasant, but not ringing my bells. If you like unsweetened coconut though, you'd probably dig this.
