I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but it was not this. I get a touch of sour vetiver (the sour vegetal kind rather than the smoky kind) sweet booze...and...stank. It's kind of OK! One of those scents where you really can't tell if you like it or not, and keep sniffing it. It does go somewhat plastic on me. Happy to have tried it, equally happy I don't need to track down more.

I'm on the hunt for soft, subtle skin scents currently, so this sounded like it might fit the bill. Wet: Light, sweet. A bit spicy from the ginger, which I love. Oh this is really pretty. It's very fresh and clean smelling, without smelling of soap. Dry: Doesn't morph, just gets a bit sweeter, but not sickeningly so - just perfect. It's so light and clean and pretty. Perfect for what I wanted it for! If you like scents with a huge presence and throw, this is likely not it, but if you're looking for a light skin scent that makes you feel pretty and feminine without being noticeable by anyone around you, this is perfect!

    Velvet Tiki

I am obsessed with tropical things, and this sounds right up my alley! Wet: Mmm. Citrusy, tropical, slightly floral - just what I expected and hoped for, really! It's very light, low throw, which I am OK with. It's nice to have some subtle summer scents that aren't too in-your-face. Dry: This is very light - a beautiful tropical skin scent, perfect for warm months, and totally wearable for any occasion. Light enough to be work appropriate, but pretty enough to wear anywhere.

Wet: Mint! Love this mint, actually. It's more of a sweet, herbal mint than a cold sharp mint. It mixes with the musk to make something I really like, and immediately think how relaxing and soothing this would be to wear to bed on hot summer nights. The mint gradually gets colder, but not sharp and it maintains its sweetness. I am enjoying this way more than I expected to! Dry: Mint and sweet musk with a soft sweet fougere are what I get from this, and I love the combo. I expected it to be really masculine, but instead it is 100% unisex and I am enjoying wearing it a lot. Not sure I would wear it out or to work, but I feel like it's a wonderful relaxing scent that I would love to wear to bed or lounging around at home. There is something so utterly comforting about it. I likely need a bottle.

    Tweedledee

Wet: Fruity, zingy, a little spicy pepper kick! I've tried this before, but maybe 8 years ago, and I didn't much care for it then. Now I find myself in need of a variety of light, inoffensive scents for work, and I wonder if this would maybe be perfect. Might be too strong though. But it`s certainly inoffensive. Dry: very pleasant. I would find it impossible to pinpoint what type of fruit it is, but it`s light and sweet, a little zingy, and very nice. I like the hint of spice, it`s really different. I don`t get either of the tea or orange blossom, which is fine by me - orange blossom is typically horrid on me, and white tea is not my best note either. So peppery fruit is what I am left with! Not sure it`s something I want to wear to work after all, I think the pepper is a little much, but it`s a neat scent and I like it.

    Titus Andronicus

Wet: Oh wow, this is sexy. Syrupy dark musk with really smooth sandalwood. I love red sandalwood. There's a hint of citrus lifting it, but not a lot. It's nice. Somewhat masculine, but not overly so, I still feel I could wear it, even though I like more classically feminine scents. Dry: Resiny musk. Really good. Less masculine as it dries. It's soft and sweet. I really enjoy it. I do wish the red sandalwood was more prominent, because I love it so, but this is still pretty great. Might be bottle worthy.

    Lysander

Wet: Lilac, wood and..caramel? Then the wood fades, and this is like Red Lantern, but with lilac. So unexpected, and really really good (I LOVE Red Lantern). I don't know why it smells similar, but it's boozy, smoky, and caramelly, in a way that feels like red lantern, with the addition of lilac! There's some sharp green in there too, but it's balanced nicely by the sweet notes. It smells less and less like Red Lantern as it dries, and I think it was just that initial blast of smoky caramel that reminded me of it so much. It's still very nice though, and for one violet isn't ruining things. Dry: Whatever was reminding me of caramel has now receded to a general, pleasant sweetness. The lilac is most prominent, making this a nice soft, sweet lilac scent. Lovely! I adore lilac, so this might be bottle worthy for me.

    Juke Joint

Wet: Much lighter than I expected. Sugary, syrupy sweet. I like it so far, but it's very faint. Dry: I really get no mint out of this, and no real bourbon, but there is a faint hint of booze. I's mostly musky sugar and what smells like amber? It's totally lovely, and not at all what I expected. I do worry that I got an aged imp, and that maybe fresh there is more mint. So I will try to get a Lab fresh imp, and if that smells the same, I will likely need a bottle. This is so light and pretty and totally inoffensive that I feel it could join the limited collection of scents that I can wear to work.

    Antony

Wet: Mugwort! It's not listed, but I swear that's what I am smelling. It's very herbal. The basil is creeping in, and I smell like pesto. Not my jam right now. Dry: This smells identical to the new American Gods scent, Take The Moon, at least on my skin. I thought that smelled of musk and mugwort with maybe a hint of lemon? Other than the musk, there are no listed notes that are the same, yet they are seriously identical on me. Weird. Anyway, I do like it, but I had already pretty much decided this type of scent is not for me.

    Different smells/colors, same perfume

I have two decants and a bottle of Mother Ghost, all are pale yellow and smell identical (which musk dominant on me, and utterly gorgeous). I had planned on getting a back-up bottle and now I'm worried it won't smell like the MG I love! Is the white musk still detectable in the reddish coloured one you have? I totally had no idea there was a batch variation for this...

    The Court of Honor

Went out on a limb with this, as orris is not my friend. But it sounded like it might be a nice clean, subtle sort of scent, and I am looking for those currently Wet: Yep, that's clean! Smells like stones wet from the rain. Neat! It's not a typical aquatic - it doesn't smell like water, it just smells damp. I love that smell! The "marble" note is beautiful, elegant and sophisticated. I totally don't get any of the listed notes, AT ALL it all just combines to smell like wet stone. It's really cool, and pretty much what I was hoping it would be. So different than anything I own. It's light, and has low throw (which is perfect for my purposes right now). Dry: *sigh* tobacco flower single note. I amp tobacco flower like you would not believe - if it is in a scent, that scent is tobacco flower single note on me. Venustas - tobacco flower is not even listed, but it was single note on me. Arachnina, - single note tobacco flower (nicotiana). Fractured Singularity smells exactly the same. If you lined them all up I would never be able to tell the difference. ANYWAY, all that to say, this is actually the nicest tobacco flower I have smelled. It avoids going to soapy or high pitched and screechy. It's still fairly soft and clean smelling. I do wish the wet rock scent had stuck around, that was pretty cool, but this is enjoyable in its own way, and I think it'll be OK for my purposes. And if I huff really hard, I can still get a bit of that marble note in there, and I love it. As an added bonus, orris never even showed up. So, ya, this is nice and I like it and will keep it and see how it wears.

    Lilith vs. the Giant Crab

My skin chemistry is slowly changing, allowing me to wear more orange scents where I never could before. I am cautiously trying a few things that always sounded good but I avoided due to the dreaded "orange powered bathroom cleaner" effect. Wet: Ermagherd, like a grown up creamsicle + sandalwood. YUM. There's a hint of creamy muskiness from the ambergris as well. Oh this is just gorgeous, and if my skin ruins it I may cry. Please please please, skin! Be good! Dry: Well, it doesn't quite turn into orange powder, but it's not as lovely as it is when it's wet. That being said, it really is quite a pleasant smell, it's very light, low throw, and utterly inoffensive, which is sort of what I am looking for for work right now, so I think I will get wear out of it all the same. Still, man I wish it could have stayed the way it was when wet, that was magnificent. ETA: Now that I am huffing some more, the ambergris is really noticeable and very lovely. It's a really nice skin scent, and though I am sad it isn't a grown up creamsicle anymore, I should appreciate it for what it is!

    Kypris

I adore Ranier Cherries, so I was totally drawn to this. Wet: Honey and cherries, with a hint of lemon sugar, and totally better than I would have expected. I really love it right now, and hope it doesn't morph as it dries. The only other cherry scent that has ever worked this well on me is Youth's Disengagement. In other scents it either goes plastic, cough syrup, or you just can't detect it. Dry: This is soooo yummy. It's got good throw, so I keep catching whiffs of this amazing honey/sugar and cherry scent with hints of lemon. I love it! I have discovered I adore the combination of honey and sugar (you would think that would be overkill, but no!) and the addition of hints of fruit is just stellar. I cant pick out any of the other notes really, except maybe hints of either the vanilla bean or benzoin. It's just lovely, and I need a bottle pretty much immediately.

    Dancing Koi

I needed to try this, cuz clove, but also because my Dad has a huge pond full of gorgeous Koi, and I just liked the thought of having a perfume named Dancing Koi (weird, right?) Wet: Wow, this is much softer than I expected it to be! The musk is like a creamy skin musk, which I am loving. A bit of syrupy labdanum comes through, which I am also quite enjoying. The clove reads almost more like ginger though? Not really mad about it though, this is really nice. Very soft, low throw, but oh so pretty - which is actually the type of stuff I have been looking for lately since my work went to a "scent-sensitive" policy. I can only wear light scents with low throw. This might be totally perfect. Dry: This is BEAUTIFUL. I think it reminds me a bit of Unicorn and Ram, which I love. It's a lovely soft musky skin scent, with tiny hints of well worn leather and sandalwood. There's something quite vanillic about it as well. It's kind of like sinking into your favourite leather chair with soft cashmere blanket. Gorgeous. Off to find a bottle!

    Different smells/colors, same perfume

OMG - I totally didn't check my backup of Hesiods to make sure it was the same as my original...I have no clue whether either have the misspelled label. I guess I had better check! I am totally keeping this bottle of Bensiabel, after all the time I spent looking for it, and the lovely person who took to time to answer my DISO and send it to me....yes, I'll keep it and just keep my fingers crossed!

    Different smells/colors, same perfume

Thank you Celestia! Mods, sorry for the somewhat duplicate type thread, not sure if you want to merge it or not. Bensiabel is not mentioned in that other thread that I can find, so my question remains, anyone have any thoughts?
  17. LizziesLuck

    Different smells/colors, same perfume

Do we have a thread to discuss this already? I searched and couldn't find one, but mods please merge if there is one (and I apologize). There have been some sort of "famous" batch variations, like Infernal Lover - the version that had no red musk. I also had a heart breaking incident with Gnome where I had at least 5 imps that all smelled like Ginger Ale, but when I ordered a bottle it smelled like motor oil....*shudder*. Haven't had the heart to try again. Now I am heartbroken by Bensiabel. I have three imps, they all look somewhat aged. They all smell primarily of plum, with hints of soft leather and lilac. They are beautiful. I didn't want to wait until it comes back in stock at the Lab, who knows how long that will be, so I hunted down a bottle on the Facebook groups. I opened it to sniff before labelling it, and was like WHOA leather. That was not what I remembered! So I got out my imps, tested them all against the bottle - NOT THE SAME. All three imps are identical, but this bottle is all leather, which is not a favourite and not what I wanted. I'm pretty sad! Anyone else experience this batch variation? Or can you tell me if this is an age thing? I do think imps age faster than bottles, so can I hope some of the leather with age out of my bottle eventually? Please post your own batch variation woes!

    The Book

Old, yellowed parchment paper, tattered leather bindings. There's a distinct warmth to the scent, though it is ancient and brittle. Wet: This is a really warm scent. The paper reads almost as wood to me, but the kind of wood I like. It glows. This is much sweeter than I expected. The leather isn't horrible (some leather notes are on me). There's much more depth to it than I was expecting, and I am really enjoying it! I wish I knew how aged this imp is - I am guessing since release, as it's Lab labelled. There is something so soothing about this. It really does feel like curling up with a good book (one of the best feelings in the world, for me). Dry: There's almost some spice or something to this! Its really enjoyable. I quite like it. Trying to decide if I would ever wear it. I can't really describe the scent, other than homey and comforting. I guess it does actually smell like this used book store that I love, when I think about it. Just really pleasant and nostalgic.

    The Manuscript

Wet: Ick. It smells like chemicals. I have The Book (ParaNorman) on my other arm, and the contrast is interesting. The Book is warm and comforting, this is cold and jarring. I don't like it so far. I think maybe it's the ink note I am really disliking. Not pleasant on me. Dry: Chemicals. Not for me!

    Penumbra

Wet: Sharp pomegranate at the forefront, which is sort of unfortunate, as it's typically not great on me. It is mellowing out though! There's hope. This is very rich. It smells like summer at dusk, if that makes sense. It's actually becoming quite lovely. Dry: OK, this is the second Pomegranate scent that has worked on me in the last little bit! My skin chemistry seems to be magically changing for the better, and I love that. This is dark and fruity and rich, and I really enjoy it. It doesn't go sharp or powdery as pomegranate always used to. I'm quite pleased with this! The musk and moonflower turn this into a dark fruity floral, which I love. <3

    Blood Popsicle

I was intrigued by Blood Popsicle, and almost ordered it from the Lab just before it went out of stock, but I was so unsure about it, I delayed and then it was gone. I debated with myself about it, but took the plunge and hunted one down. No clue whether I will like it! Wet: WOW. I expected Dragon's Blood, somehow. Which I would not have been hugely pleased with. But this is blood musk on me, and it's fabulous. It's dark, a bit incensey, a bit resiny. Slightly fruity and sweet? Which keeps it from being an "angry" blood musk scent, if that makes sense? There's also a greenish herbal edge that I am really loving. This was NOT what I expected, in the best way possible. Oooh, now there's a very slight metallic edge, which makes total sense. Not overwhelming at all, just very faint. And now I'm getting hints of spice. Wow, this is SUCH a morpher! Dry: This scent is so neat. Musky, incensey, warm and cold at the same time. It does have faint hints of metal, to me. But also some spice. I really like it, but man is it hard to describe! Very unique. Worth the wait, and the hunt to get it.

    Eve

I can't believe I forgot to review this! I didn't think I would like it at all, I thought I was fairly safe trying it. I was wrong. It's hard to describe, to me. It's so much more than the sum of it's parts. I can never pick out notes, even though they're all quite familiar. It's smoky and rich and absolutely enchanting. Of course I had to have a bottle. So glad I was to get one, thanks to a friend. I love Eve and will cherish her! (It also lasts sooo well on my skin!)

    So Below Hair Gloss

I find this to be incredibly true to the perfume (at least the bottles I have). Much more so than Haute Macabre HG, which smells quite different to the perfume to my nose. Could also be body vs. hair chemistry? Anyway, LOVE THIS and so happy to have it!

Beanman & Beanwoman Prepare to Attack the Vagina

Wet: OMG. I immediately slather on more. Musky coconut (which is a combo I LOVE) with hints of tropical ylang ylang. It smells like expensive sunscreen (which I also love) and summer and the beach and everything good in this world. Dry: I knew I would love this, and I was not wrong. Musky coconut, not too sweet or strong. A great skin scent. It smells like summer, and it makes me so happy.

    Zorya Vechernyaya

Wet: Horrible chemicals. The vetiver and red musk are combining to smell horrid on me. Too bad, because the bit I spilled when the imp broke and I had to decant it into a fresh one smells really sophisticated and awesome. Clearly this is not good on my skin. May also need some aging. Dry: Really unpleasant, the way leather sometimes is on me. It just smells like a bunch of chemicals. Sometimes when I age leather scents that issue goes away, so I'm going to age this and hope it does too. I have never had musk or vetiver do this to me, makes me sad. I thought the orange blossom and jasmine would be the issues, but I can't even detect them.
