White Chocolate, Marshmallow, Honey, and Goat’s Milk
LizziesLuck replied to VioletChaos's topic in Lupercalia
Wet: I am always a little hesitant with goat's milk, but these other notes were too good to pass up. Wet, I am getting something that reminds me of the beaver moons - it's like a graham cracker crust note. It's yummy, but I want more marshmallow and honey. Dry: Pretty yummy. The jury is still out though. Sometimes I sniff and get yummy marshmallow, which is a favourite, other times I get a burnt smell that's not pleasant. I'll have to find time for a second test before they come down. -
Wet: Blah, oudh is doing that fecal thing it does on me sometimes. One of these days I am going to have to accept that oudh is really not good with my chemistry...smells like dirty diapers. Dry: I don't get any red sandalwood, which was why I wanted to try this, and hardly any saffron (red sandalwood and saffron sounded so amazing!). Sadly, on me, this is all about the oudh, and oudh is all about poopy diapers. Thanks, skin. That's super. This is clearly not for me. Sad! I had high hopes.

Wet: At first I am getting the cherry cough syrup effect. Then the red musk comes through strongly. I find it a bit bitter in this. So far this is not a winning combo on me, it's lacking the sweetness I like with my red musk. Dry: This actually dries down to a really lovely fruity red musk. It sweetens up as it's warmed by my skin. I would wear it. However, I have a ton of red musk, and since I can't wear it to work, I don't think I'll need a bottle of this. I need to stop hoarding red musk that I can't wear hardly ever.

And Thridi said: Just as cold arose out of Niflheim, and all terrible things, so also all that looked toward Múspellheim became hot and glowing; but Ginnungagap was as mild as windless air, and when the breath of heat met the rime, so that it melted and dripped, life was quickened from the yeast-drops, by the power of that which sent the heat, and became a mans form. And that man is named Ymir, but the Rime-Giants call him Aurgelimir But concerning this says Vafthrúdnir the giant: Out of the Ice-waves | issued venom-drops, Waxing until | a giant was; Thence are our kindred | come all together, So it is | they are savage forever. A giant born of the force of elemental savagery, given form by venom and ice: frozen ambergris and dark, primal musk, molten amber, black cypress, and frost-limned opoponax. Wet: This is a dark scent. I am getting lots of cypress, which reads as very cold. Black musk. It was really strong at first, but is fading fast. It's fresh out of the mailbox today, I likely should have given it more time to settle, but this was the scent I was most torn about - couldn't decide if I thought I would love it or hate it. Still can't decide. This is dark and cold and brooding. I'm actually picking up hints of mint - the frost, I imagine. This smells of winter, but whereas the other winter scents I own are happy or nostalgic winter scents, this is the scent of a forest on a frigid, moonless winter night. The menthol gets stronger and stronger, and really mimics the feeling of breathing in cold night air. This scent is much more atmospheric than I expected, and I do find I am enjoying it. Dry: SO. Having a hard time deciding how I feel about this. No, that's not it. Having a hard time accepting how I feel about this. I don't like mint for anything other than bedtime in the summer. I mean, I like the smell of mint, I just don't typically want to smell like it. But this....this scent has essentially dried down to dark, sweet musk and mint. Hints of opoponax if I really huff, hints of woods also. But mostly mint and musk. And I really enjoy it. Beth will never cease to amaze me. This scent is beautiful. I can't wait to hear how it smells on other people's skin - whether or not I am a weird skin-chem anomaly.

I love the name of this, and the label art so much! Wet: Mmmfg, coffee and tobacco and everything good in the world. Reminds me of Pinched with Four Aces. This is some good stuff. The leather comes through a bit. The carnation adds some sweetness and spice (along with the tobacco) and keeps this from being too masculine for me. Oh gosh that coffee note is so good!! Coffee and tobacco together make me so happy (in life, and in scents, lol). Dry: fantastic. In the same vein as Pinched, and also slightly reminiscent of Arabian Dance. A classic. Glad I found some!

Wet: Kind of muddled - neither rose or tobacco are coming through clearly. It's...weird...on me. Dry: Much better, It gets sweeter, and I can pick out a luscious rose note and a dry spicy tobacco note. I think, though I love both notes, I don't really love them together. I don't know why.

^ Congrats, LadyLuckless! I don't know why I felt the need to try this - it sounds like it'll be aquatic, which is never good on me, but honey incense and saffron....hmmm. Wet: Yep, aquatic. Hello dryer sheets. Golden floral dryer sheets is how I would describe this right now. Dry: All-in-all it's a lovely aquatic, but it's still aquatic, and gradually gives me a headache, as much as I want to love it.

Honestly, nothing about these scent notes would have made me purchase this - while I adore vanilla, lemon and cherry are rarely my friends. But I had to support the cause so here I am! Plus, you never know what will surprise you. Wet: CHERRY!!! A mix between cherry candy and cough syrup. Not a fan. The vanilla sugar does come out fairly quickly though, making these veer much closer to cherry candy than cough syrup, which is obviously much more pleasant. As it dries, the cherry gets fainter and the vanilla stronger, and that makes me wonder if I may actually be able to wear this. I don't get any lemon at all at this stage. Dry: You know, not nearly as bad as I expected, with these notes and my skin. The cherry disappears, the lemon never really shows up, and I am left with a mildly clean, fairly powdery vanilla scent. Very wearable, and undeniably pleasant, though it doesn't really wow me. I don't dislike it at all, and am happy to have been able to support a cause and end up with a perfume I don't hate. I bet this will be better with age, and is worth having if you like vanilla and/or fruity scents.

This is so beautiful in the bottle, I could barely stand to skin test it, for fear that the orange will do it's thing on my skin and ruin it. But spring is officially here (even if the weather hasn't caught up yet) and I couldn't wait to test it any longer. Wet: So far just as gorgeous as it is in the bottle - vanilla musk is dominant, mixed seamlessly with the tuberose, and orange provides a fresh undertone. I don`t get any almond on my skin, which is fine by me, it often smells weird on me (like fake cherry). Dry: So gorgeous. So completely wearable. It`s sort of like a `main stream` perfume, but so much better. It`s a shame that this was so limited, because it would likely be the perfect `gateway BPAL` for a lot of women used to a traditional perfume. This is super classic, feminine, and altogether lovely. Glad I took the risk on the orange and almond. I`ll likely snag more of this if I can.

Diligent Instruction for the Bridal Night
LizziesLuck replied to SadariEvenstar's topic in Lupercalia
Strawberry is so iffy (it's either glorious real fresh berries, or plastic) but I could not resist that mallow! Wet: Reminds me of those creamy strawberry candies. Yum. There's something underneath that's hard to place - it's like an earthy caramel, if that makes any sense whatsoever. This is extremely pleasant. Dry: Really lovely - fresh berries and a gentle creamy note. Doesn't really smell like marshmallow to me, but still yummy. Not sure I would wear it, but glad to have tried it, it's so nice. -
Wet: As promised - bright, spicy carnation and incensey chrysanthemum. I know it's not listed as a note, and it could just be the imagery of the name of the scent, but I do get the sense of late summer and hay bales and warm sunshine. Quite lovely, but it's gradually turning a bit bitter on my skin. Dry: This just isn't made for my skin, sadly. It goes really bitter and stays that way for a while, then eventually turns to soap. Too bad, it was so promising, and sounded lovely.

Dried patchouli leaf, brown amber, woodmoss, red currant, labdanum, khus, and wild plum. I was looking for a fall atmo, and I have high hopes that with this collection of notes this will work well for that. Mmm. This is so good. Warm, woody. The patchouli is fairly dominant, but combines with currant I can't stop sniffing it (patchouli and currant is a favourite combo of mine). I keep getting hints of something that reminds me of sassafras/sarsaparilla - I wonder if that's the labdanum? It usually reminds me more of Cola than Root Beer, but either way, LOVELY. Overall this is warm and woody, with hints of fruit, just the right amount of sweetness, and a faint impression of something I can't put my finger on (that's super helpful, right? Lol) I love it and will use it this Autumn, just as I had hoped!! ETA: This is the warm, dry, woody version of Patchouli - not at all chewy or gnarly. A very different Patchouli note than Revenant Rhythm. Just thought I would add that.

Dark Chocolate, Whiskey, and Cardamom-Infused Caramel
LizziesLuck replied to Numanoid's topic in Lupercalia
I am obsessed with cardamom right now, and I love caramel. Wet: So I went to Nashville in the fall, and we went on a tour of the Jack Daniel's distillery (which was so cool) and this takes me right back there!!! This is all whisky on me, mixed with sweet caramel. I want to drink it pretty badly, but not sure I want to wear it. Dry: The chocolate comes out, and the whisky fades a bit, and this becomes much more wearable. It's exceedingly pleasant, it's just not wowing me. The cardamom isn't present on me, which is sad because I think that would have taken it to the next level. -
Wet: Blarg! Cleaning products! Super chemically and astringent. Spilled on a pile of beautiful sweet tobacco. That tobacco note is great. Too bad it's doused in a white leather than is clearly not agreeing with my skin or nose. Ick. Dry: Sadly this is just a huge pile of nope on me. Chemically clean white leather takes over everything, and it's just not my jam.

A little scared of the goats' milk, but I love the other notes too much not to try it. Wet: This immediately reminds me of Ivory Vulva. No joke, they smell quite similar on me. Baked goods and coconut. Like coconut cookies, maybe. Seriously yummy, and I am now hungry. Wow, this might be even better than Ivory Vulva. Somehow I was not expecting it to be this gourmand, or this good. Wet: YUM. Coconut baked goods gloriousness. I need to test it against Ivory Vulva to see if I really need a bottle of both, but man is this yummy! If you like coconut gourmands, don't pass it up.

I almost got a blind bottle of this. My love-hate relationship with patchouli stopped me. Still excited to try my decant! Wet: There's something almost fruity about this, which is confusing. The patchouli in this is dry and earthy, rather than gnarly. The amber is sweet, and I think that's where the fruitiness is coming from. It's quite nice, but I don't love it to far. I wish there was more tobacco. Dry: I am just not loving this. Sometimes patchouli and I are awesome together, sometimes we're not. This is a time we're not. Smells a lot like a classic cologne, and it's just not for me. Glad I didn't go for the bottle.

These notes should all be pretty terrible on me, but I love everything this stands for, and just had to get a bottle anyway. I think I will keep it, even if I do hate it. It means a lot to me. Wet: Wow. Not what I was expecting. It's quite sweet. The oudh in this is so beautiful. The Frankincense hasn't stomped all over everything yet, and the iris is not masquerading as violet yet. This is rich and pretty, and so much more than the sum of it's parts, so far. I can't smell steel which is a blessing. Dry: This goes sour for a bit, and I remember why I don't always like oudh, but then it comes back. It's sweet and almost fruity?? Hard to pick out notes other than a floral note that doesn't really smell like iris, something sweet and resiny that doesn't really smell like Frank, and oudh. It's kind of crazy that this combo of notes smells the way it does. I like it much more than expected, and am happy to have it. <3 you, Beth, for all you do. And we will all persist.

Wet: Lots of patchouli, with an almost green edge to it. Woody and vegetal, rather than chewy or gnarly. It's really pretty. Soft, subdued. Classic, somehow, without smelling familiar or predictable. Very well blended, the pepper and tobacco blend seamlessly with the patch. I don't smell any metal, but it does have a old sort of feeling to it. Dry: I really enjoy this. It's sweet, but dry. Very sophisticated. Sort of hard to describe. Patchouli is the star, for sure. But I think it's a patchouli that even people who don't like patchouli could like, Happy to have it. <3 you, Beth, for all you do.

This is one of this year's Lupers that I was most excited about (hence the blind bottle) Wet: Interesting! The first thing I think of is candied roses. The beeswax and rose combine (and it is a totally different rose note than any I have smelled before!!) to do this sweet, powdery candied thing that is really different, and I am totally digging it. It's soft though, I immediately want to dab on just a little more to get a real good sniff. It's quite lovely! I get a tiny hint of smoke, like a freshly snuffed beeswax candle, but no tobacco at all. Surprising, as I typically amp it, but then again I amp beeswax and rose as well. This really does smell PURPLE. It's almost like there's a hint of grape candy, or my brain thinks there should be grape candy. Or something?? Dry: This is truly beautiful. Very girly. Sweet, a bit powdery (in a good way - like powdered sugar). The purple rose note somehow reminds me of violets, without smelling like violets (which is good, as I can't stand violets). The beeswax is so rich. The whole scent manages to smell rich and syrups, light and powdery at the same time. Very different. Really glad I snagged a bottle. I can see wearing it a lot of bright sunny days.

I think I would have purchased this, just based on the cause, but the notes really called to me too. Wet: Heavy on the champaca, which is my least favourite note of the four, but so far it's soft and glowing and I kind of like it. Different than anything I have, for sure. Very pretty. Sometimes as I huff the coconut comes through, and it's downright gorgeous. It's almost...peppery? Like in the way that cardamom can be peppery, if that makes sense. Dry: This is a really lovely, light incense scent. I don't own any champaca, so it's different than anything I have. It's light, a little spicy, a tiny bit head-shoppy, but I do think I like it. I will have to see if I end up reaching for it. I for sure couldn't wear it to work. But for now, I am keeping it.

I adore all these notes, and can't wait to see what they smell like together. Never would I have thought to pair lilac and cardamom. Wet: Oh my gosh the lilac. It's GORGEOUS. So true. It smells like stuffing my face in the lilac bushes that grew all over our property where I grew up. It's like being 10 and home again. This is the nest lilac scent I have smelled, EVER. I don't know what the other notes are doing, other than supporting the lilac, and I don't care. This is amazing. Honestly, I can't say it enough. If you love lilac, you must try this. Dry: Still absolutely gorgeous. I really can't say enough how utterly beautiful this is. I will likely grab a back-up. Best lilac perfume, EVER.

I'm obsessed with clove right now, and that's what I was hoping for here. Wet: Mostly champaca and opium with leather. It's rather head-shoppy at the moment. The opium is dominant enough to overpower the leather. So far this is quite discordant on my skin, and not the sexy clove and leather scent I had hoped for. Oh my gosh, then the tonka shines through, and the clove peeks out, and this might be saved! It's not what I imagined, be there's sure something about it.... Dry: The leather lingers, but everything else has sort of faded away. I have a feeling this needs some aging before all the notes truly sing together. I have learned my lesson about giving up on things too quickly, so I will be returning to this in a couple months to see how it's doing.

Love all these notes, nary an iffy note among them, so I can't wait to try it! (In my head it smells a bit like So Below, but my head is frequently wrong) Wet: Mmmm. Mmmmm!!! It's light, and close to the skin, but I immediately want to slather on more, it's so good. It is a bit like So Below, meets Unicorn and Ram. It's slightly tropical, in a sexy, sultry sort of way. Gosh I wish it was stronger though! This also reminds me of something from Lush, but I couldn't tell you what. I like this, but it's so hard to pin down, and there is so little throw. I am having to literally stuff my face into the crook of my elbow to smell it. It smells familiar and comforting and sultry all at once. Dry: This dries to a sultry, sexy, musky coconut scent. It does still have a So Below type feel to it - but maybe more of a "daytime" version of So Below, if that makes sense. It's still a light scent, but it's much easier to smell now. Not a lot of throw, but strong enough to wear and enjoy. I quite like it, and will be keeping my bottle to wear in the summer (with my million other coconut scents - we'll see how it stands up).

I haven't entirely decided how I feel about oudh yet, but these other notes were too tempting to pass up - hoping the honey part of the honey oudh is more prominent. Wet: Warm, honeyed, glowing wood. Like honeyed oudh single note (oudh/agarwood is a wood resin, and it always smells strongly of wood to me, more the polished variety than a growing tree, but I would guess that's why some get a forest feel out of this). This is so nice. I could happily sit for hours with my face buried in the crook of my elbow, breathing this in. I think I have decided I do like oudh, especially when it's drenched in rich honey. Dry: They honey really shines in this, and oudh gives it so much warmth and depth. I really can't identify any vanilla, but it's still lovely, and the vanilla may come out more with age. I have also notices that bourbon vanilla never seems to show much on my skin (sadly). Anyway, I like this a lot and will be keeping my bottle.

Can't believe there aren't more reviews of this! It was one I was most excited to try. I only skipped a blind bottle because opium can be a bit iffy. Wet: Unfg. This is eyes roll back in your head good. Sweet, rich, woody, heady, slightly spicy, a bit incensey. So much more than the sum of it's parts. I likely should have just got a bottle. The tobacco is closer to the Bulgarian than the French. It's drier than either though, less sweet, but has that spiciness that Bulgarian has. The sandalwood is so warm in this. And the amber keeps is from being masculine. The opium adds a hint of intrigue. Mmmm. This is my favourite that I have tried so far of this year's Lupers (but I've only tried like, 4. Lol). Dry: Soft, sweet, and surprisingly spicy. The tobacco note is completely mixed in with the sandalwood, and it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. I can barely distinguish the opium or amber (though the amber lends sweetness, I am sure). I like this a lot. It's very subtle and beautifully blended. Once dry, it's not as swoon worthy as when wet, but it's still really lovely. Something very classic about it. I can't stop sniffing it, which makes me think it needs a second test. Right now I am leaning slightly towards a bottle, but I have learned to test several times - my skin and nose are fickle.
