Just wanna say how excited I am to find these reviews, having just noticed that this blend is still not included in the collection on the BPAL site. Gonna see if I can change that! At first sniff it seemed like some kind of dark vanilla/cedar goo, but on the skin I'm getting that mysterious tart fruit note (cherry? currant? prune?) and a hint of anise amidst this backdrop of swirling resins. The oil is almost gummy on the skin, how decadent!

The basics, and then the gossip: • Regretfully, due to health concerns, BPAL is pulling out of Dragon Con • Instead, we will be releasing this year's convention exclusive products online • If you had been planning to attend the con to pick up for others, please email Customer Service (if you have someone picking up for you, please let THEM be the point of contact with the Lab) Yesterday, amidst the rising tide of Delta variant Covid-19 cases, Dragon Con announced that proof of vaccination (or negative test results) would be required for entry at this year's convention. We salute them for taking this responsible precaution, which will surely save lives. However, when BPAL originally committed to attending, the Delta variant and breakthrough cases were not a concern as they are now. Also, due to the region's rising level of infection, we cannot count on receiving adequate medical care in the event of ANY illness or injury. As a family business this is deeply concerning and we've decided we cannot expose ourselves or our employees to this level of risk. As a result, we feel we have no choice but to withdraw. We recognize this will be a terrific disappointment to many of our customers. It's a loss for us as well, in terms of our reservation fee and the event sales which are part of our annual budget, not to mention the chance to reunite with those we haven't seen in far too long. We extend our sympathies to loyal customers as well as the Dragon Con team, all of whom have been stuck similarly weighing difficult decisions related to their own safety as well as others'. To help lessen the sting, we have decided to make all of our 2021 Con Exclusive products available online, so that no one misses out on a particular scent they had been planning to buy; more on this release will be forthcoming ASAP. I'm about to share the July Lunacy announcement more widely, and wanted to make sure to circulate info about down dates as well! Firstly, this Lunacy update is accompanied by two bonus collections: a pair of scents tying in with an upcoming interactive program launched by our Shakespeare buddies, and also a new set of RPG scents. As for what's coming down: we lose all the Lupers on August 16th. No Lunacy scents are being taken down this month, but next month the Double Lunacy stuff will vanish. So there ya go!

Just a post updating folks about the situation with Dragon Con, which will soon be upon us! 1. We are currently planning to attend! BUT, as you may have noticed, we're still currently living through a pandemic, and anything could change at any moment. 2. If we make it, our booth and retail experience will likely be overhauled to minimize contact and keep people safe. We don't know yet how any of that will work... details TBA! 3. We promise we will continue closely monitoring convention standards, health reports, and all the variables that might affect the safety of our customers and our staff. Ultimately we will make the best decisions we possibly can, up to and including when we're at the event. We'll try to be as clear and direct as possible in keeping everyone updated, to minimize disappointment or concern. Although there's likely to be SOME disappointment and concern no matter what, since we simply can't guarantee the cozy, familiar experience that we've all gotten used to over the years. Hi ho, hi ho! We aren't sharing this "publicly" yet, but I wanted folks here to be the first to hear it so there will be plenty of time to process your feelings before we start re-releasing The Last Unicorn this summer. In a nutshell, there are going to be some differences. I know everyone wants to recapture the EXACT scent they fell in love with before, but ingredient accessibility over the span of a decade can make that impossible; in certain cases we'll be approximating original formulas using updated components based on what's actually available now, not unlike the "Resurrected" collection a few years back. And in other cases (I don't know which yet!) the formula itself will be tweaked, reflecting areas in which our beloved perfumer has been convinced FOR YEARS that she could do better. It's essentially the same spirit that has inspired us to update the labels, beloved and familiar as the old ones have become. We have grown! And we want to present our best work. So we know there's likely to be a certain element of surprise in this collection, welcome or otherwise, and we wanna be up front about it so the actual release itself isn't too marred by disappointed reactions, and no one ends up feeling tricked. Questions are welcome, I'll answer what I can, when I can! Overall this re-release represents a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes and we're terribly proud of it. Please keep that in mind amidst your unavoidable pangs of nostalgia for the original stuff. We feel them too, but we've simply gotta do what we must in order to keep holding our heads up. Here to break the internet with news that our beloved "The Last Unicorn" perfume collaboration with author Peter S. Beagle will FINALLY be returning this summer! Featuring brand new label art by Julie Dillon (@juliedillonart), these fully licensed perfumes will be re-released in small groups until the full set is restored. And we plan to expand the collection as well, formulating new original scents! Please help us spread the word about this occasion, which we hope will serve as a joyous reunion with many beloved characters from the book as well as vintage BPAL scent memories. Zilch. What do we look like? A dispensary?) (Wait, don't answer that...)

The Fortunes of the Harvest A hymn for increasing fecundity, and to help nurture all the seeds that you plant in the coming year: patchouli, licorice root, tobacco, and sandalwood. In the bottle: a cool, damp, gritty tobacco, like a pouch that's been kept in a farmer's pocket close to the skin. On the skin: Almost immediately becomes warmer and spicier as the patchouli breaks from the pack of notes, in the most inviting way imaginable. I'm not getting a clear bead on the licorice root or sandalwood notes, they are all expertly harmonized with the tobacco in a beautiful earthy chord (so, don't let that licorice note scare you). In the drydown the scent becomes less lively on the skin and more earthbound. The hint of sweetness from the tobacco (and I assume, the licorice) is quite pleasant. I would definitely scent a drawer or closet with this, in addition to wearing on the skin -- it completely reminds me of all the out-of-the-way corners of my grandparent's farmhouse, and the old books, clothes, and relics that gave off an enticing aroma of hard work and age.

Good morning! It seems like most folks saw our announcement about DOUBLE LUNACY, and I wanted to follow that up on the more private channels with an update about the state of our Customer Service, aka Ted P. Barrial, email-slayer extraordinaire, who is also packing most of the orders. By now most BPAL fans have gotten the memo about the urgency of our situation over here, in terms of too much work being done by too few people. But we've also gotten a lot of new customers during the pandemic (yay!) who don't really know anything about what's going on behind the scenes (boo! but not their fault) and have more intense expectations in terms of accessibility and order turnaround. Anyhow, every hour Ted spends answering emails is an hour when X amount of orders don't get shipped out. And bit by bit, week by week, this has contributed to a major slowdown, which is why we're still struggling to complete orders that people made a month (or longer) ago. And this, dear faithful readers, is one factor in the decision to bump Lunacy farther down the road: as sorely as we need the business, we simply can't handle the influx of new orders. I know many of you are already only emailing etc. as a last resort, but it still behooves me to issue a reminder that Pandemic Roolz are still very much in effect, and our labor shortage has got the remaining crew working 6-7 days a week and we're STILL falling further behind. There's not much anyone can do to help, but one way is that if you see anyone grumbling about the turnaround time or about our Customer Service, you can gently (because we want to keep them around!) catch them up on our situation. We are not Amazon. We are not Target. Heck, we're not even BPAL in terms of how things were running a year ago. We are starkly limited in our ability to scratch every itch or see further ahead than this week.
