To me, "The Knave of Hearts" instantly smelled cake-y and bready. My mom quickly recoiled while smelling it and claimed that it smelled strongly of patchouli. I don't smell even a hint of patchouli here, so perhaps my mother's nose is far different from mine. I really like cake-y scents, but I'm not the biggest fan of this one. "The Journey of the Oil" In the bottle (imp): Large inhale. I smell sweet bread very strongly, with a tiny bit of blackberry creeping through. It's nice, but I am no big bread loaf boy. (Pictured below: me while wearing this scent.) It's very sugar-biscuit like. I like having hints of cake in my perfume, like Tokyo Milk's (I think that's the name) Bittersweet. I LOVED that perfume, but sadly it had very little staying power. But this is TOO MUCH CAKE. On my skin initially: Knave of Hearts reminds me, oddly enough, of a Joanne's/Michael's craft store which inevitably has that odd, artificial old lady scent that sort of permeates the air at all times. Maybe it's from the really cheap holiday candles they have? Anyway, I am not the biggest fan of smelling like cheap old lady candle. Smelling this intensely has given me a mild headache. I smell like a big blueberry muffin candle. Post drydown: This is the first BPAL scent so far I've actively tried to remove. I really, really don't like this one It's actually mildly nauseating after a while. Something about it has a little artificial acrid-ness as well that just doesn't rub well with me. Oh well

A friend bought me this for my birthday and I've been smelling it from the confines of my bed all day. This is a delicious floral with heavy notes of rose and some sort of sweet flower (very unsophisticated nose here, I'm still working on it!) that is very delicate and yummy. Unfortunately, it vanishes pretty instantly on my skin, unless I just have a bad nose and can't smell it. So far, the perfume that lasts the longest on my skin is Black Moths.

Love makes monsters of us all: faded red roses and a glimmer of garnet with black lily, ylang ylang, smoky plum musk and black amber. I really love this scent. It's somehow florally while managing to be sort of dark and grotesque. I definitely also get a elegant Victorian vibe that reminds me of one of the velvet dresses that she'd wear, swishing off into the darkness to cause some chaos. "Lucille Sharpe" is definitely worthy of her namesake--- like rotting florals covered with a splash of blood. So yummy.

Woo! I just got this scent today after three weeks of anticipation and a little bit of worry since this is my first BPAL purchase. It turns out that I'm a big fan. I started off with putting on a little bit of Lucille Sharpe, and then layering over with Black Moths. Since I'm a big dummy who has giant hands and cannot properly handle tiny bottles, I splashed WAY too much of it all over me. At least it smells really good! I don't know if it's Black Moths or Lucille that softened out to become almost sweet on my skin, but it smells super amazing. From the bottle, Black Moths smells vaguely medicinal-- nowhere near your normal "perfume". It's definitely an interesting smell, but I could see it being too strong for someone. In my case, I was looking for a scent that wasn't the typical floral, woodsy or citrus scent. I wanted something unique with a bit of a dark/Gothic edge, and I think I found it here! On my skin originally it smelled a bit harsh and moth ball-esque but that faded pretty quickly. I can still smell that sharp original edge, however--- which is a good thing. My nose is very unsophisticated and I've been feeling like I'm going to sneeze since this morning, but I will attempt to identify some of the notes I detected in Black Moths. Bottle: Strong liquor, wood, dampness, old and very astringent medicine, tiny bit of incense? On skin, first hour: All of the above with a hint more incense. A little headache inducing (but then again, I did splash on a whole lot accidentally) On skin after two/3 hours: Woody, but sweet (not floral or candy sweet, it's definitely something darker and grimmer than that which I like!) I definitely feel sort of a Victorian edge coming from it. I really, really like it--- I'm just hoping I don't use up all of the oil in that tiny bottle. My skin tends to eat up scents!
