I received this as a frimp with an order a very long time ago. I've used it off and on and just realized how much I truly loved it as I have run out of the imp! I've never had that happen before. It has aged about a year+ I believe and boy has it aged well. It has mostly smelled the same on me from the start, though the wine note and spicy quality to it has deepened. This is definitely an interesting take on the character. He was unique and I feel this oil is fitting. This has a spicy green quality to it that I love! While I wouldn't want to wear this all the time, it is extremely pleasant to the senses. I love scents that can take you places, and this takes me to Caliban's island. It's a beautiful exotic beach scent and that bit of wine in their comes out on me in the dry down. It's not strong, but adds a delightful bitter sweetness to the salty, aquatic air. So to break it down: In imp: aquatic goodness. Not really cologney to my senses, though. Wet on skin: green and salty immediately, the aquatic scent is blended very well into this. Those that fear it going soapy, sour, or synthetic shouldn't worry! Dry: as I said previously, that beautiful spicy green quality is the best part for me. I feel like I'm walking among the bright green plants right before you walk onto the beach, the ocean just in sight on the other side of the sand dunes. Dry down: the wine makes for a fitting end to this. It is subtle, but really stands out among the greenery and oceanic notes. This lasts great on me. Usually green or aquatic/ozone scents are gone within a few hours but this lasted from the moment I put it on for work (7:30 am) to my lunch break(12:30 pm) where I had to stick my nose to my wrist to just barely smell what remained of the wine and salty air.

Am I overlooking it or are people really not recommending CP's Alan McMichael?? I feel like this scent, just like his character, is so under appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you want something masculine and foody-ish. I noticed you listed boozey and earthy as well! I wouldn't say it was extremely gourmand but the bay rum has a spicy vanilla quality further deepened by the sandalwood. It's not too sweet at all. As I saw in the reviews on it, someone said this was something you would wear lumberjacking and I can't agree more. It has a piney, cloviness under the bayrum and sandalwood at the dry down that is gorgeous. I can't think of any perfect ways to describe this but it really is a very unique scent to me. It almost has a Christmasy(not to deter you) quality to it because of the pine, bay rum, and clove. It's not as simple as 'bayrum and sandalwood.' The scent note description make it come off so simple and boring but it's NOT. I don't gender perfume oils at all but if I had to this is the perfect masculine blend. Sweet(but not too sweet, I stress) and spicy and comforting. A bit warm, but not stifling. Edit: I know this isn't within the last 5-6 years (it's from 2008) but have you considered Fredric?(Victorian whimsy and piratical romance: a reluctant seamans chypre sloshed with a mix of bay rum, patchouli, amber musk, dark woods, tea rose, and red currant.) It's mouth watering. Earthy, boozey, sweet, spicy. I tend to amp rose, but its all so well blended it really behaves! No sour or powdery monstrosity at all! It has it all and is my signature scent! It ages so, so, so well.(I am collecting several backups as I find them lol)

The Manuscript Really my favorites depend on my mood so they change a lot, these just happen to be the ones I've been wearing a lot recently. I am on my second bottle of Lucy's Kiss and nearly out of Catherine, Zombi, Dorian, Morocco, and Lucille Sharpe :'( I recently received The Bride, John Watson, and Yorick as well and I cant get enough of them!

I recently received this as a frimp from someone on the forums, I cant remember who but I really appreciate them. Something about this (I suspect the oleander) immediately made me start to cry... This smells exactly like my late grandmother's house. It's perfumey, sweet, and warm. Oleander reminds me of older perfumes and for some reason that's what I remember her house smelling like. The honey is sticky sweet and gives a really pleasant warmth to this blend, but isn't foody at all here. This is cloyingly sweet to me. To tolerate it I just put a little bit on my wrists and spread/dab elsewhere on my body so that it calms down. This is my grandmother and her home. This is how she smelled before the hospitals and the Alzheimer's and dementia. I missed this smell and I will always miss her. Thank you BPAL and whoever frimped this to me for bringing this memory into my hands. I will cherish it.

For as long as I can remember I have LOVED the smell and colors of Hyacinth flowers. I adore the mythology behind it, the 'bromance' between Apollo And Hyacinthus A lot of perfumes I have sniffed that try to emulate it are pretty sub-par or make them smell too sour, cloying, or wilted *COUGH*Penhaligon's Bluebell*COUGH* I own Grief and love it, but it is unfortunately one of those BPAL scents that just don't throw or last on me. I don't mind too much, as I enjoy it while it's there. I also have Egle, probably the best perfume I own with Hyacinth in it. It throws and lasts very well. It can just be very sweet! Recently I got my hands on Whirling Wind Moon (2013) and a decant of the earlier one (2008?) and found the 2013 had a stronger hyacinth note while in the 2008 version it was more in the background. This could easily be the age difference and the added ginger note in the 2013 version. I do love both, though. I love the ones I have, but that said they are not the Hyacinth I am seeking. I don't mind the mild blue sweet-sour scent that has become the main stream version. Hyacinth is the best at smelling sad, given the story behind its namesake. I just want something closer to what's in my garden, greener and spicier than the BPAL oils I have now. The closest right now is Egle, but it is a bit cloying. I am nonbinary and while I do not gender-label perfume oils and consider everything unisex, I prefer to smell what can be deemed 'masculine.' Suggestions of anything outside of BPAL are also welcome. Any tips on layering? What can amp Grief? What can calm Egle down?

I still have a good bit left in my imp so I'm not panicking, but does anyone know a good replacement for Wolfsbane? It's probably a stretch to ask. On me It smells so sharply green and peppery, I love it.

My first review on the forums! Yay! I came to review this one in particular because it took me by surprise. I had been rushing to get ready for work in the morning and had stopped by my BPAL shrine to swipe on one of my oils. Not paying attention I accidentally swiped Fredric onto my wrists, which I had just received the day prior. I wasn't bothered and thought today would be a good day to test it out anyway, so I rolled with it. While driving I sniffed my wrist a few times and really couldn't pick up much more than damp wood (mulch minus the cedar??) and something very faint, but akin to fig preserves(maybe the red currant but it was not smelling very red..). It almost had an aquatic and airy twang to it (the chypre maybe?). It was very light already so I was disappointed and expected my body chemistry to eat it up. Fast forward a few hours and I am at work, busily filing. I really couldn't smell anything on myself and had put on a cardigan, so my wrists were covered. As I was reaching upwards I suddenly caught a wiff of something sweet and cologny(sp?) but blew it off as one of the guys in the office wearing a cologne that left a trail. I kept smelling it and I actually really enjoyed it so I sniffed the air a few times but didn't catch much of it. It took me a few minutes to realize it was coming from me as I moved around. I stuck my nose to my wrist and could not believe what it smelled like!! Surely this was not the Fredric I had put on that morning! I could instantly tell I was smelling the tea rose perfectly surrounded by the sweetest bay rum, amber, and patchouli. It had transformed completely. It was gorgeous! The tea rose was slightly powdery but it was not overbearing at all, more fresh and sweet. The amber and bay rum were warm(not too warm, more airy!) and inviting but never turned into a gourmand vanilla note. The patchouli gave this ground. It leveled everything and deepened the notes, controlling the sweetness and making it slightly masculine. It was so divine. A few coworkers noticed it and complimented me, to my delight. I wear 'men's' colognes pretty often and a friend noted this was pretty masculine, just mildly sweet on me. (Note: I view all scents as unisex but will recognize certain notes as leaning femme or masculine. I will say at this point it is a strongly unisex fragrance.) After lunch it had stayed the same and I enjoyed every second of it. As the day wound down I noticed it start to change again, this time I was able to catch it as it morphed into something a bit deeper. The red currant was reemerging but not like it had at the beginning. It was playing with the bay rum and rose. It almost had a 'baked' red currant quality but this fragrance never goes gourmand to me, oddly enough. It was warm but not hot and the chypre seemed to be keeping things cool and airy this entire time. The dry down was a very cologny experience but never cold or soapy. I cant really tell when this finally wore off. I kept catching wiffs of the earthy/musky amber up until I took a shower the next morning. I have a new favorite. I am going to need bottles and bottles of this adventure-in-a-bottle ASAP!! The breakdown: In bottle: patchouli and damp wood Wet on skin: Damp wood, something airy(the chypre?), and a faint hint of something akin to earthy fruit preserves(red currant?) Somewhere between application and the dry down: The amber, tea rose, and bay rum come up well blended and grounded by the patchouli. Dry Down: The bay rum fades into the amber and the red currant comes back, not foody or juicy, deepen it. The tea rose and patchouli are in the backseat keeping things earthy. This fades wonderfully and the amber musk seems to be the one left behind. This never goes gourmand, I stress. I usually amp rose but this tea rose, though lightly powdered and sweet, does not misbehave thanks to the amber and patchouli. This wavers in and out of being sweet and cologny, but not in a soapy clean way. More of an alluring, deep cologne that is subtle and pleasant. I find this highly unisex the majority of the time! This truly lived up to the description for me. It was a strongly Victorian scent romancing the adventures of a pirate!
