BPAL for headaches, pain, colds, seizures, sickness, illnesses...
jessamynit replied to Tesseljoan's topic in Recommendations
ugh. never fun! and almost impossible to pin down (damn those headaches!). my recommendation is mainly to avoid trying a bunch of different scents at once! even sniffing the imps. I always blow it, cause when I get 6 or more imps I want to smell them all RIGHT NOW! and sometimes this results in overwhelm and a headache, if not a migraine. another tough one for me is just trying a little tiny bit on my wrist at first (so if it bothers my head, or just doesn't work for me, it's easily rinsed off). I usually slather first and ask questions later. so to you I would say, be careful and be patient! do as I say not as I do also, I have noticed that the more complex a scent is, the more likely it is that I will get a headache in reaction to it. not always, but sometimes. it seems like if there are several notes fighting to be heard/ smelled, my head tends to more frequently get overwhelmed. so maybe try some of the more simple scents first... the calmer sounding descriptions. hope that helps, good luck! -
The essence of the most debauched hunger encapsulated into a perfume. Desire beyond love, anguish beyond sanity. Nutmeg, sassafras, black poppy and myrrh. ooooh, I love it! smells like myrrh, cherry cola/ opium, and darkness. I really should order a bottle. if only it was real opium on a day like today! oh lord

I haven't tried this one yet, but in the imp it kind of just smells like "the bar" to me. not really lovin that! we'll see...

I like this. starts out sweet but not cloying and fades into a very nice musk (soft and subtle but pretty). the best part, though, was that I went to whole foods this morning, and walking through the produce section, I heard a woman say "what IS that wonderful smell?!! it must be these pineapples! I totally have to buy one!" hee hee I don't think it was the pineapples!

Similarities Between BPAL Scents - GC and general discussion
jessamynit replied to Shollin's topic in Recommendations
I'm really really fond of alice and was surprised by that - I'm wondering if anyone has tried just the carnation single note? I have always loved bergamot but I think it's the carnation that really stands out for me in alice... now that they're phasing out the single notes I'm wondering if I should order a bottle... or just be happy with alice and not look a gift horse in the mouth kinda thing anyone? -
yeah, kinda smells like bubble gum. mostly I'm like "this is alright."

I'm loving this one! it barely lasts an hour on me (and I'm always scared to really pour these oils on as I never know when my sensitive boyfriend will end up with his head sticking out the window of the car) and reminds me a lot of embalming fluid (which I might like better, don't know yet) but it sure it gorgeous. it smells like something delicious but without being strictly a sugary scent (to me). yum!

reading these reviews, it amazes me that every note someone has mentioned sounds right to me. sage? yes. ashes? yes. metal? yes. lemons, cardomom, incense, burning, yes yes yes yes. I couldn't pinpoint any of these myself but I agree with all of them. djinn has a nice, dark, spiciness to it that reminds me a bit of tears but with a lot more OOMPH to it (tears is a little too, I don't know, wispy for me). I have so far been very partial to the floral/ sweet scents from BPAL, which surprised me since I normally love musky ambers as well... but this one really stands out for me. something like opium, frankincense, darkness, power, sage, evil... I like it! that said, I still don't know if it's a very "me" scent, but the imp is terrific, particularly on this overcast october today... it feels like a great october scent. ADDED Oct. 17: OK, I changed my mind, I MUST have a 5ml of this one! delicious! all day long I was just sniffing and sniffing my wrists, not caring who saw then a friend said "are you wearing vetiver? it smells amazing". the lasting power is great but I felt no headaches or overpoweringness... I felt powerful! LOVE IT!

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils
jessamynit replied to friendthegirl's topic in BPAL FAQs
verrrrry interesting. I usually apply scents right after the shower - but maybe cordelia is a *special* scent like that it did cross my mind too - I'm flying on an airplane tomorrow - quite a nervous flier - maybe my extra sensitivity crossed over to my skin a bit! in any case, I liked the smell but clearly cordelia is not for me. call me gunshy. if anyone wants this imp, just pm me! thanks for the advice, the hives are starting to die down (phew!) -
I loved the scent in the bottle (and I agree, it smells nothing like its description). so I slapped some on my neck and arms and within 2 or 3 minutes I was/ am completely broken out in hives wherever it touched my skin! I'm not sensitive to most things (nettles, poison oak, any other essential oils ever) so I'm really confused as to why this one chose to f--k me up so badly. I'm just hoping it goes away in time for the wedding I'm in this weekend if anyone wants this pretty full (tarted) imp, let me know. we can do a swap or I can just send it to you - I want it out of my house! yikes...

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils
jessamynit replied to friendthegirl's topic in BPAL FAQs
I'm somebody who is lucky to have almost no allergies (just to sulfa antibiotics, something that most people have a reaction to) - I've even been touched by stinging nettles and poison oak and nothing! however! this morning I slapped on some drizzles from my new cordelia imp (smells so lovely!) and about 3 minutes later my boyfriend said "why is your neck all red?" I thought I had just scratched myself with the imp wand (something I do a lot) but then I looked in the mirror - every SINGLE spot where cordelia touched my skin is completely red and puffy and totally hived-out! as you can imagine I freaked out and jumped back into the shower scrubbing myself off but the red spots are still here - it's the strangest thing. it looks like cordelia was a red skin-staining dye, every tiny amount that touched my skin is completely swollen and red. you can even see where I put a droplet on my arm (it looks like an oil drop, but bright red!), smeared it ALL OVER MY NECK (nice), and rubbed some in up and down my arms. so I'm not sure what to do except look "cool". it doesn't itch too much but it's very freaky looking and frustrating. also I have no idea why I would have such an instant strong reaction to this one - I've tried lots of other scents with rose and others with cinnamon and had absolutely no reaction. this is very disconcerting. phew. thanks for letting me ramble. any advice? thoughts? -
very sweet and nice. when I smelled it I thought "this is okay". then when I tried it I realized it smells divine on! I'm totally sold on it. sort of creamy... rich... usually I hate vanilla scents on me but this has just a tiny touch to round the scent out. recommended!

ooh, this is nice! it smells just like honeysuckle (we've got plenty here in northern calif.). I don't know if it's something I would wear much as it's pretty light, bright, flowery (and lovely) and I'd like to have a bit more edge... but it's sure nice to have the imp and it smells divine! how do they do it?!
-
this one I really wanted to try even though I thought I wouldn't like wearing it. I'm really not into cinnamon scents. BUT the honeysuckle idea intrigued me... getting the imp I was like, "oh yeah, smells like big red". I'm so glad I made myself try it though. after I put it on I felt it was a very NICE big red kind of smell but still much too strong for me. then I put it tried to swap it for a danube with someone - luckily the swap fell through because an hour or so later I was like, "what IS that wonderful scent? oh, it's ME?!!" the cinnamon got much less powerful (and smelled more like nice cinnamon bark, instead of intense undiluted cinammon oil) and suddenly got very complex, dark, smokey, and mmmm. I want to try it a bunch more for sure - I still don't know if it's something I'll wear frequently but I can definitely see finishing the imp and figuring out what friend would like this scent (I know someone will love it!). good job with the chimera! very mysterious and lovely.

I also feel undecided about katharina... some momentsI really like the sweet and fruitiness with a bit of seriousness to it.. sometimes I feel like it's a bit too peaches n creamy.. and yet other times I find myself thinking "this smells fantastic, but not for me". I think overall it's a very unique and lovely scent, just not sure if I want to "rock" it quite yet

I traded for this one without really knowing if I wanted it or just wanted to smell something new. when I got it, I thought, ugh, way too cedary for me. so it's been sitting here on my desk and I've been trying to re-trade it, and occasionally sniffing to reconfirm, oh, yeah, too cedar. then today I was bored and put some on and went for a bike ride - it was so much different on! still cedary, but much softer than I would've suspected, and mixed in with so many nice, green, foresty smells. I can sort of smell the olive and raspberry if I try but mostly it's a soft, cheerful (where does the unceasing anger come in?) mix of dirt, trees, flowers, and I really like it. it's not something I would wear every day but it's now on my list (oh boy). even my highly selective boy likes it, saying "it smells like a REAL flower, not just a flower scent; like the whole flower, including stem and dirt". plus a bunch of cedar

this reminds me of drinking way too much bombay sapphire gin : ) delicious but kind of crazy too. still not certain how I like it...
-
oooh I like this one! I didn't think I would (who thinks they're going to want to smell like a "cathouse"?) but it's delicious. very fruity-sweet without being sickly or cloying at all, like a strong deep dark dessert. I had to go around sniffing arm all day when I wore it, so I'm thinking it might require buying a bottle. oh, and my cat couldn't stop licking my arm either : )
-
I like this a lot, didn't feel it was too "gentlemanly" nor chemically (i.e. cleaner, bug repellent, etc - though I can see why people got that) for me. I agree that it's sort of aquatic but it also seems bright and cheeful to me. I can't quite tell what I smell in there, it's very tricky for me to identify, but I do know I like it, it seems to brighten my mood up a bit. I'm thinking I'll try another day with it and may order a bottle! I liked it right away.

my first review! this is (so far, and I've only tried 10 or 12 scents!) by far my favorite one. the sour milk thing is just in the bottle, once I put it on it just smells... sweet but not cloying... slightly powdery but not old-ladyish... like milk & honey with something deeper... and the spice of carnation just makes me go around sniffing myself all day. I really do love it! my only complaint is that it seems to fade very quickly on me. delicious, though, my favorite!
