Help to find best scents for the Wicked Queen
alterosen replied to Titaniah's topic in Recommendations
I second Madame Moriarty (not currently available but supposed to return), Spellbound, Blood Countess & Blood Rose. Perhaps Blood Kiss (lush, creamy vanilla and the honey of the sweetest kiss smeared with the vital throb of husky clove, swollen red cherries, but darkened with the vampiric sensuality of vetiver, soporific poppy and blood red wine, and a skin-light pulse of feral musk)? It's very dark & slightly sinister from the vetiver. If you don't mind strong roses, I'm very fond of Dawn:Mother, All Saints & Rose Red for projecting a powerful vibe (all un-impable or LE but you should be able to find them on the Sales & Swaps Pages) -
Chaos Theory V: Recursive Self Similarity v4

And another one: Snake Oil (unknown #) bright fresh apples & then slightly spicy Snake Oil - I was hoping for something a bit more apple cider-y but the apples are too crisp or something, not really tart either. I'm not sure what to call it Nice but not for me. -

A few bottles that have passed through my hands lately & I don't think they've been reviewed here: Dorian (unknown # ) lemon verbena & strong tea with a melony vanilla finish, brief brown sugar phase Dorian CL (150) candy-coated fruits, possibly apples, berries, hint of melon - kind of pink feeling overall Dorian CXC (190) lots of resins, incensey with a vanilla finish - this one also has a bit of a clean topnote at first that I find familiar but can't identify -
I can think of a few LE's: Montresor (my favorite wine scent), Halloween: Las Vegas, Mason & Jenkins Port Wine Jelly, Gluhwein, Zadok Allen Vineyard. There's quite a bit of wine discussion in this boozy rec thread, too.

My vote is for Port Royal. Love it! I have a problematic relationship with woods & aquatics but this one works really well on me & the husband
-
I get a lot of hyacinth from this one (I have a few bulbs in my garden) but I wouldn't really like wearing it as perfume. Just not my kind of floral - I'm also not a big fan of jasmine & tuberose & though I'm not noticing those notes in particular, they could be contributing to my overall dislike.

General citrus recommendations - and discussion of all things orange
alterosen replied to UltraViolet's topic in Recommendations
I'll second the rec for Embalming Fluid & since you like the spices suggest Great Sword of War (mandarin, tonka, saffron, black tea, cocoa, tobacco leaf, sanguine red musk and five classical herbs of conflict) which is a spicy orange musk. Maybe Nyarlathotep - I thought it smelled like limes & wood. Veering away from citrus, You might like also like Port Royal for the spicy woods with a hint of aquatic. It's a bit on the masculine side. -
Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?

Have a look on the Sales & Swap pages for Dawn: Mother, Elizabeth of Bohemia, All Saints, Rose Red & maybe Red Rose. They're all LE or un-impable. From the GC, Snooty Rose might not be so sweet since it has woods in it. I find Peacock Queen to be similar to London on my skin though a bit richer but it might be different on you. -
Similarities Between BPAL Scents - GC and general discussion

I would give Hermia a try - it has that sweet pink pepper that makes Pepper so interesting but is a bit more golden in feel. -
Congrats! I don't like all vanillas but I do love Dorian so I'm hoping our tastes are somewhat similar I think some of my favorite summer scents would appeal to you: Lady Una (if blackberry works on you), Tattered Lace, Black Lace (the appley version is pretty rather than overtly sultry), Autumn Moon of the Mirror Stand (reviews are very mixed but I love it). I'm also one of those who likes Snow White as a bridal scent. Though it smells a bit like a Pina Colada on me, I still think it gives off a lovely cool confident vibe & your chemistry may be better with it than mine.

Also, the Lunacies are always 5ml bottles so you can't order imps of them from the Lab. Looking at the list on the left side of the Lab's Website only the things in the categories from Alchemists Local 93 to Wanderlust are available as individual imps. The other scents are "un-impable" but people do decant them & you may be able to find what you're looking for on the Sales & Swap pages later on.

Nom! I do like this one - it reminds me a lot of my beloved SawScaled Viper, all schmexy spices & vanilla musk. True, it doesn't last all that long but it's delicious while it does.

Snake Oil CDXLIII (443): Strawberry Snake Oil - so delicious! A dark sexy strawberry, not a girly one. There may be a tiny bit of pepper of some sort as well giving it a hint of heat. This one is a favorite with the men-folk. -
To complicate things further, some of the Pumpkin Patch bottles are cobalt glass rather than amber. I'm guessing these are the 2005 ones since I have other 2005 Weenies that are cobalt, too (Samhain, Devil's Night & Harvest Moon) whereas the other 2006 Weenies I have are all amber. I could be wrong, though, since I didn't receive them new. Perhaps there was a mix of bottles used that year. Anyone?

BPTP (Hair Gloss, Atmo, Bath Oil) to BPAL Similarities/Reccs

I think SawScaled Viper is pretty close to Aphrodite Kypria though there's a bit more spice to it (bearing in mind that I have a cold). Worth a try anyway! -
I'm surprised by all the negative reviews for the Rat Speakers because I quite like it. Wet, this is fresher than I was expecting (from the sage & lemongrass) anchored by the patchouli & possibly some vetiver. Then the leather comes out followed by more sage on the drydown & a bit of stone. Earthy & interesting - need to test it on the husband because he often smells really good both in patchouli blends & in lemony/sagey ones.

I got this almost as an afterthought - though I often love roses in perfume, I rarely like floral room sprays (the Fainting Couch was emphatically not for me). I usually prefer spicy, warm scents but I've been looking for more Spring-like things. I must not have read the reviews because I am a big fan of Rose Red & this does indeed smell a lot like it. Lush red roses with just the right amount greenery for the win!

This was in heavy rotation at my house during December. I sprayed the entrance way so I was greeted with piney goodness whenever I came in the door. So far, this is my favorite room spray - I love the sweet pine with the hint of berries & smoke!
-
Cherry blossom, green tea, and sake. I didn't expect to like this that much because I'm not a huge fan of clean or green scents or Asian florals but it really is nice! Lots of pretty cherry blossom wafting through my living room. Perfect since it's Spring & I feel like something fresher than my usual warm spicy scents.
-
I find this much more earthy than the perfume. The apples are definitely secondary to the damp woods & patchouli. It is also way more smoky - still very evocative of the season!
-
I quite like this - it has a dense sweetness that reminds me of the Snake Oil soap (though not as strong). Sweet, thick & slightly spicy - nom!

I swear that there's some pear in Sugar Skull (a blend of five sugars, lightly dusted with candied fruits). Many of the reviews mention raisins but I totally get pear along with a syrupy vanilla (way nicer than it sounds). Alice's Evidence is the one with the raisins. Personally, I like Titania but only notice the pear in it sometimes. Symmakhia (vanilla, heliotrope, red sandalwood, pear, black lily, white wine grape, and white rose) was mentioned upthread & for some reason the pear & grapes combine to smell like baked apples on me. Nice but odd if you're expecting pears.

An allegory of Victorian melancholy and madness: tea-stained bourbon vanilla, with white cognac, coconut bark, Oman frankincense, and woodmoss over opium tar-stained silk. In the beginning, this is a bright citrusy tea scent that hovers on the verge of being too fresh for my liking, but then the yummy vanilla musk comes out & all is forgiven. It doesn't have a ton of throw or staying power but will be just the thing in warm weather when I don't want to be overpowered by scent. Reminds me somewhat of Lady Lilith in its light fresh complexity.

You might want to check out some blends that contain cypress - it often gives things a foresty feel without being all EVERGREEEN in your face. My husband realy likes Nemesis (cypress, ginger, fig, dried rose, red patchouli, tonka bean and cyclamen) on himself. It's sweet & foresty but not over the top.

If you like the sound of Pepper, you should try Hermia (pink pepper, golden amber, honeysuckle, passionflower). It's a lovely creamy spicy amber. Othello might be interesting, too, (Arabian musk with two roses and a bevy of Middle Eastern and Indian spices). I find it more spicy than rosy. Personally, I like to go for hardcore roses if I'm channelling the Grand Old Lady vibe: Rose Red or Dawn:Mother (impable close matches from the GC would be The Rose & Snooty Rose). Neither are particularly creamy though - maybe Roses, Pearls, Diamonds would do?
