    Different smells/colors, same perfume

I just had the same thing happen- I am a mad fan of Bordello in all of it's lush plummy goodness, so I was stoked to get a frimp in my last lab order. However, I was shocked when I popped it open and it smelled like Graveyard Dirt! The same moldy soil smell almost exactly. It is most certainly not Bordello- not even close. I will have to jot a note down to test this next to Druid.....

    Harlot

This was one of the scents that broke my heart. It is like a bad relationship you can't stop trying to make work. I have swapped for this multiple times though the years, hoping that maybe this time it will be awesome.... but alas I think I may have finally learned my lesson. This is everything I look for in a scent- roses are one of my favorite notes by far, and I just LOVE cinnamon and spices in any form, so add them together, and it sounds like a match made in heaven. I was looking forward to a lush, juicy rose, spiced up with some serious cinnamony heat (LOVE!). But no. I get almost no cinnamon from this blend, and the roses just turn dusty and powdery on me. So disappointed in this one.

    Rose Red Candle

I agree with Herb Girl- this candle has enough throw to scent an area just sitting unlit. I actually just received a tea light as a Trading Post order sample, and I am in love! It is just as lush, juicy and beautiful as the Rose Red oil, and even the tiny tea light throws off incredible scent. I would love to get a full size of this one!

    Mermaid

This is absolutely the most beautiful aquatic type perfume I have ever smelled. I usually do not really care for aquatics as perfumes (more as bathroom scents ), but this is so beautiful and sweet and so well blended that it was one of my favorites of the Lilith's, which took me by absolute surprise. It has the faintest hint of foodiness (maybe from the vanilla), and none of the sharpness that I usually get from this type of blend. It vaguely reminds me of Selkie, but a sweeter, prettier version, like Selkie's cute little sister, or something. A big hit!

    (Not So) Penitent (Mini) Magdalene

This is just beautiful. It is a rich, sophisticated, woody/musky blend with a great smattering of beeswax and candle smoke playing along with some decadent spices and a touch of nuttiness. The red sandalwood (which usually takes over on me) is tempered nicely by the sweet vanilla playing in the background and rounds the whole thing out magically. This is love in a bottle. And by the way, I am shocked that nobody has made the comparison to Storyville. Granted, it has been years since I last sniffed me some Storyville, but this smells almost exactly like I remember it. E.T.A. This also smells very, very close to the Candlelight atmo spray.

    Eve

In the imp, this smells fresh and fruity, but with a touch of something odd (hairspray?) in the background. It is mostly apple in the imp. When wet, the ylang ylang makes itself a bit more known behind the delicious apple smell, and seems to lend a funkiness to the blend. On the verge of something smelling rotten with a boatload of good smelly stuff covering it up. Dry, this becomes a bit sharp, with the apple still in forefront. I get very little, if any rose from the blend at any stage. It smells like apple shampoo, with a faint touch of almost moldiness, or fermentation in the background. Hopefully this will work out a little better on someone else.

    Alice's Evidence

I almost didn't even try this one on, because in the vial it is a sharp cassia smell with something a bit unpleasant lurking underneath. I have learned through the years, however, that BPAL is not always what it appears on the surface, so I went ahead a took the plunge. I am glad I did- as it drys down, this turns into an almost-but-not-quite fruity cinnamon with a good shot of mulling spices on top. It is a lovely, warm scent that will be great for the cold days ahead. When dry, the fruitiness comes out even more and this smells simply yummy! Spicy and delicious, reminiscent of spice cake and sweet juicy plums.

    Le Lèthè

This starts out on me as a beautiful red musk, and almost instantly turns into an intense soapy smell. Straight up traditional bar soap over a hint of musky floral (orchid?). Like someone dumped a musky but yet floral perfume on themselves, and then roughly scrubbed it off with white bar soap. The soap smell fades a bit on the dry down, but not much. Not what I expected at all.....

    Madrid

While still in the vial, this has a gorgeous ripe cherry smell that just about sparkles. Once applied, it turns into a deep red wine, with the velvety cherry yumminess lurking in the background. Very soon though, this morphs into a powdery floral that is nothing like the smell when in the vial, though it does retain a touch of wine behind the powder, and a bit of the sparkle (from the mimosa?). It goes from bold and sultry when wet, to floral, and dare I say, almost grandmotherly upon drydown (with a touch of pizazz). Shucks.

    Voodoo Queen

I must say that for all of the spiciness this came out roaring with, this dried down and dimmed a bit to something very similar to the creaminess of Egg'd Mailbox with a bit more spice. It is a very rich 'skin musk' smell to me, and makes me envision dreadlocks and racks of Gypsy spices. Not one I can pull of wearing, but very exotic and beautiful

    Monster Bait: Underpants

Guh. This is just sooooo pretty/sexy/bold/sultry.... The sandalwood and saffron are perfectly balanced by the vanilla, which at no point tries to go plastic like it does in most blends on me. The butter rum scared me a bit at first, but was not to be feared, only adding a sweet buttery richness far in the background. Amazing.

    Midwinter's Eve

The '04 version of this is a nice, sweet but dry plum which did not blow me away, but was pretty enough. The '05 version of this is all sweet sugar and plummy goodness. It is likely in my top ten oils, and is just perfectly feminine. The '07 version though was very harsh and not sweet or pretty at all to my nose. The plums did not have the juicy fruitiness from the '05 blend, and I wonder how much aging plays a part in these differences.

    Pinched With Four Aces

I am not a fan of coffee OR tobacco smells, HOWEVER, this oil is simply stunning. This is the smell of just laundered linens, fresh and clean in the morning sun, defiled by a spilled cinnamon/vanilla flavored coffee and a cloud of Morrocan tobacco smoke wafting across the breeze. This is love in a bottle...

    The Lurid Library

Wow, how one is to bottle the scent of incense-dust covered books, I may never know. Dry paper and leather bound volumes with years of incense seeped into them... This is such a novelty scent, but so lovely at the same time. I may have to find a bottle of this one somewhere down the road, and I am curious to see how this ages!

    Monster Bait: Tokyo Stomp

This is a lovely pick me up kind of vanilla-mint blend that is invigorating and refreshing without being overpowering. I swear I smell chocolate lurking in there, though I don't think I saw it in the notes. This reminds me of a peppermint patty, which I am a big fan of, though I did not find myself reaching for this blend enough to keep a bottle around. Very pretty though, and a tiny bit reminicent of Snowblind and the Lick Me series.

    Pumpkin V (2007)

I just love the way the pumpkin and red ginger play together in this blend. The neroli and lemon are background notes that help make this fresh and clean, while still being rich and dark from the pumpkin and ginger. The vanilla seems to smooth and round the blend out and add the little bit of added sweetness that was needed. I did not hang onto this because as nice of a blend as it is, I do not see myself reaching for it enough to keep it around, but I would be curious to snag a bottle after this has aged a few years...

    The Perilous Parlor

Oooh, this one was so pretty on me... all sweet pear and vanilla yumminess, and then *POOF*, it was gone. This has no staying power on me whatsoever, much to my dismay.

    Love's Philosophy

Wow, it is the funniest thing! At first, in the bottle this was a bit plasticky to my nose, which I attribute to the cream, as some blends with cream seen to do that on me (one of my favorites- Beaver Moon '07 comes to mind). However, I slathered away, and was immediately rewarded by the smell of... are you ready for this?? RED LICORICE ROPES AND VANILLA CREAM SODA! Seriously folks, this was dead on with my skin chemistry. This was a total flashback to those giant 3ft ropes of licorice I coveted as a child- I looooved red licorice in all forms as a child... no surprise that I lean towards very sweet and foody/candy like blends. This satisfies these cravings on many levels, and will become part of my ever growing collection. So pretty and sweet and girly and...mmmm...candy.

    El Dia de los Reyes

I am not a coffee fan. Never have been... HOWEVER- Beth just keeps surprising me in this area. Pinched was a dream on me, and this one was almost as nice. This is a real, dark, decadent chocolate melted into a shot of rich organic espresso with a little bit of whipped foam, cinnamon and sugar on top (but just a little). I keep frimping this one out and using it to enable friends/family just because this seems like a hard blend to resist, especially for the coffee/chocolate fans! As rich as it is, there is no bitterness lingering here in any of the note- just pure smooth indulgence...

    Gingerbread Poppet

Ahhh, so I had tried the original Gingerbread Poppet, and enjoyed it quite a bit, but it was very sought after, so I never invested much energy into finding a bottle of it. The '07 version though, seems to have that much more 'kick' to it, and it so full of gingery yumminess that I have intense cravings for gingerbread cookies whenever I break this open. The other spices (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg...) play in with it a bit, but the ginger takes a front seat the whole time, which it perfectly OK with me... This one is one to stock up on!

    The Clod and the Pebble

This one did just what I dreaded..... The cedar amped itself like mad and overtook the entire blend for the first 20 minutes or so. After that I did get a whiff of a lovely, unisex blend of a dusty incensey/patchouli sort underneath it, but it never quite surfaced past the cedar. This would probably smell great on a guy though, or someone who does not amp cedar like I do...

    Beaver Moon 2007

OK, so I held off reviewing this for a while because I had so many mixed emotions at first- In the bottle this is super sugary, sweet pink berry juice with a glimmer of cherries... mmmm Gak. Wet, immediately on it has a very odd, off plasticky strawberry smell. Not quite right... but then... As this dries down, it is the loveliest, most yummy, sweet berry tart that manages to balance the sweetness and tartness perfectly. This one will be very loved and appreciated.

    Sugar-Slathered Candied Apple

This is very strong, wet apple in the vial.... On and wet, the apple still lends a good amount of punch, and lets through a blanket of sweetness. Very rich and gooey smelling, but a bit too much apple for me. To me this is like the apple version of Rose Red, if that makes sense to anyone... The drydown lets a bit more of the browned sugar come through- turning this into something resembling a apple cobbler...

    Marshmallow Poof

Ah, so lovely and sweet and fluffy and chewy... Wait, where did it go? All I smell is powder... So very lovely. I wish my skin did not eat it within 10 minutes... ETA: This has aged over a month now, and is becoming much more sweet and rich- it has better throw and lasts quite a bit longer then when it was fresh. Mmmmm, marshmallows...

    TP'd Trees

This strikes me as a crisp clean linen scent. Like cotton shirts drying in the summer sun, and a breeze coming in off the water with a gentle touch of flowers within. Quite fresh with a bit of ozone- Try it if you liked Dirty, Katanyia the Clockwork Woman, Bed of Nails or Door 13.
