    Juliet

Am I the only person who thinks this smells a lot like Alice? I get the same sugary smell from both of them, except Alice is a little creamier. It's odd, since they don't have any notes in common at all. Well. Suffice to say that Juliet may be a little too sweet for me to wear most of the time. I feel like my wrists have been transformed to solid cane sugar. There's nothing wrong with that, but I could really use something with a little more bite...

This one was in my wish list-- I LOVE rosemary, although I've never tried any bpal scents that contained it before, and rose blends have been working out great for me. I have a shaky history with orange blossom, based on the fact that my family had an indoor-orange tree for my entire life, from which I learned that orange blossom in the flesh always smells like bathroom deodorant. However, when I got the imp open, I found myself in one of those situations where you're almost too scared to put it on your skin. The smell was very harsh and prickly, very-- I'lll say-- poisonous. Appropriate. On my skin, the rosemary warms up a little bit, and I can locate the rose and that dreaded orange blossom scent (which still smells like air freshener...) I find this scent merely ok. Rather like air freshener, overall. I'll see how it wears, but as of right now, it's kind of giving me a headache.

    Ophelia

This is lovely! I hadn't given the oil much thought, since I don't consider myself to be anything like the character Ophelia, but I got this imp as part of a random imp pack (chaos becomes me). It's sweet and pretty, very much alive, and not overly sad-scented (definitely not a funereal oil). This is the first lotus scent I've tried that doesn't become bubblegum. In fact, there's a definite tang to it-- almost of very faint citrus, my guess is it's the white rose. I'm very excited the stargazer lily worked on me, since it's my favorite florist-shop flower. However, I will say that as far as floral blends go, I don't like it quite as much as I like Marie.

    Shattered

This is going to be the strangest connection to make, but this reminds me of something from a scratch 'n' sniff book I had when I was little. The book was "Billy Bunny Follows His Nose", or something like that, and featured a bunny having an exciting day by smelling things. I can't remember exactly what it was he was smelling that this reminds me of, but I think-- and this is going to sound really odd-- that it was a rose. All that speaks to is the inferiority of the scents in my scratch 'n' sniff book. Or maybe my memory. Maybe it was the pine tree that smelled like this, I don't know... Ok, anyways. I don't smell much champagne, which is I think what called me to this scent's description in the first place. There's a slightly spritzy scent of grapefruit, and the smell of sliced mint. The mint is prominent, but not over-powering. The blend is, indeed, sharp, and somewhat piecey-- things don't necessarily fit together perfectly, although they don't harm one another. It's very cold. I wonder when I'll wear this, what kind of mood I'd have to be in? I'm interested to see. I'll keep it for now.

    Mata Hari

This is pure jasmine on me, and nothing else. And I'm so disappointed! This had seemed like the perfect blend for me-- I love roses, I love coffee, I love vanilla, fig, mahogany sounded lovely... but this is nothing but the baby-pastel scent of jasmine. So sad.

    Shanghai

Wet, this smells sharply medicinal to me, like antiseptic. On my skin, the lemon verbena becomes more prominent. I'd looked forward to the lemon verbena in this, but now I'm really unsure about it. Yes, this is a clean scent, but it's also an emotionless scent. It reminds me of hospitals and disinfectants, a general fear of germs, of touching. It doesn't smell bad, at all, but the mood doesn't suit me at all.

    Danse Macabre

I got this as part of a random imp pack. It's not a scent I ever would have picked out for myself, since I'm not really interested in frankincense. It's certainly very different from any other scents I have. I get a really strong sense of pine-- this smells very much like pine pitch to me. I can't really smell all that much else in it. I'll probably swap this.

    Kali

In the imp, it smells boozy in a big way. Red wine and a hint of tobacco smoke, but mostly that alcoholic tinge. The red wine becomes richer and underlayed with a hint of chocolate when it's on my skin, but dries down very quickly to the nutty/creamy cassia scent. Occasionally there's still a boozy tinge to it, but it's kind of intermittent. I wish it was a stronger scent, there's not really that much throw to it once it dries down... I'd been hoping for something stronger.

    Alice

I needed to have Alice. I had to try it. It was a necessity. And... I'm a little disappointed. The sweetness of the milk and honey scent is a little overpowering on my skin, to the detriment of everything else. I get a faint, fuzzy spiciness from the carnation, but that's about it. The overall effect is that of pink frosting. I'm really disappointed that I can't smell any rose or bergamot. I don't hate it... I kind of like it... but I was expected a nose-gasm, and I didn't get it. I'll try wearing it for a full day sometime soon, but this honestly might be an imp that I swap...

    Seraglio

In the imp, it's marzipan, pure marzipan. Same thing wet on my skin. As it dries, the orange peel becomes a little stronger, and I suppose there's a distant hint of clove (or how clove smells on everyone else, it usually becomes the big, bad, evil clovemonster on me....) Oh wait, here comes the rose! And... now, a few minutes later, neroli! This one really likes to change. And I'm really enjoying all of these changes... I find this a very luxurious blend. The changing is flirty, sultry, sexy. Very enjoyable. I don't think you'll be able to get this imp away from me.

    R'lyeh

I'm with everyone else who was pretty surprised that "unfathomable darkness" smells like fruit. I claim it's melon, not grapefruit, and it sticks around, which grapefruit doesn't. Of course, I love grapefruit, I love fruit scents, and this one is an interesting version. It definitely smells wet, and I get a sense of sea-spray, maybe churning up from a whirlpool. Yes, the melon continues, but sometimes it becomes just sweet ocean water. I'm a fan. Very much so. I'd actually be craving some aquatics to help me feel better about the heat here in the summer, and this is a perfect summer blend.

    Akuma

I like citrus, so I'm really surprised I never noticed this blend before. I never even glanced at the description-- no matter, I got it from a random imp pack. I like the fruitiness of it, but I also like the sharp edge the neroli gives it. It's very different from my other citrus blends, and I'm really happy with it. It also appears to be lasting a lot longer than my other citruses, which is much appreciated.

    Color associations?

Is there another post somewhere that collects scent associations that people have for each color? If not... What scents do you associate with what colors?

    Color associations?

    Thanks.

    Days of the Week BPAL

Of my collection, probably Cockaigne. It smells like pie... warmth and sweetness and closeness. ETA: (I said this in reference to what scents making me feel loving, which would be associated with Friday...) I love Marie, so I'm always inclined to recommend it (though it's sorely under-rated!). I find it flirty, which is pretty glib, and the violet has that "now you smell it/now you don't" thing, which seems good for quick changes. ETA: This is for Wednesday
  16. Both Antique Lace and Devil's Night are on my (admittedly, huge) wish list, but I'll have to add Dorian. But... one question... what is fougere? In a lot of oil descriptions, it says "lavender fougere", but in Dorian, just "fougere". Does fougere always smell like lavender?
  17. Hey, I have a sexy-scent question. I've noticed that a lot of the blends that people consider sexy include and in fact draw their general sexiness from notes that I don't like, like dragon's blood, patchouli, or amber. So... are there notes besides these that people consider sexy? Are there sexy blends that don't include any of them?

    Envy

There's a harshness to this scent that I like, a coldness from the mint and the green herbs. I smell the green herbs first, followed by the lime, and then the mint bursts forth on my skin. Right now I'm getting a lot of mint (Like fresh, green spearmint, by the way, not like toothpaste mint). The sappy scent is really nice. Also, no lavender offending my nose. Yay! Any blend that includes lavender without making me sneeze/scream "Gross!" is a triumph.

    Forbidden Fruit

Um, yeah... gum. Juicy Fruit? Sure. Yeah, I agree, at the age of six, I would have been all over this. Which, in combination with the name, is pretty creepy. Swap!

    Black Dahlia

Mmm... I'm liking this. I like the jasmine in it-- it's very innocent, it reminds me of being very, very young and with my grandmother. The amber gives it a much more grown-up tone. The magnolia also conjures up childhood, since I'm a southern grrrl. I don't smell much rose. I like rose a lot, so that's a little sad, but I don't think the blend really needs the rose. I'm very satisfied as it is. It's a very floral blend, but does not induce headaches. I feel like many perfumers would have gone a step further and thrown in some lavender, but as someone with an intense hatred of lavender, I'm pleased to say Beth saw that discretion was the better part of valor. It reminds me of a meadow on a hot August day...

    Black Rose

When I first opened this imp, I said skeptically, "Does this have Dragon's Blood in it?" I checked the notes, and no Dragon's Blood. I started to worry that maybe amber and musk just aren't for me. Then I put it on. And... that awful drippy Dragon's Blood tang went away. The amber became something I could deal with, the musk made a nice light back appearance, and finally-- after it completely dried-- I caught a whiff of rose. I LOVE rose blends. And I think I'm going to like the rose/musk combo in this one. It doesn't smell like I am a rose, it smells like my skin sweats, and my sweat smells like roses. I like that idea. Wait. Wait. It appears to be drying into powder. Yeah. Goodbye, Rose. Hello, powder. Murfle. Ah, well.

    Kuang Shi

Um... am I the only one getting bubblegum from this? Ok, maybe that's only wet, but... tropical bubblegum, with fruitiness from the mango and orange, and a powdery sort of feel from the musk. Ok, it's drying and I'm getting more sandalwood, which is good. But what an odd scent... I'll try wearing this for a full day sometime, but so far, it's... mm, a reasonable try, but not a keeper.

    Ave Maria Gratia Plena

Err, no. It smells very perfumey to me, and is almost a dead ringer for the perfume my grandmother used to wear. The nostalgic feeling was kind of sweet, but there's not way I'm wearing this.

    Swank

When I first tried this on, the boozy scent was almost too much for me. I think I have to be in the right mood for that smell... Today, I was, so I slathered it all on. The fruitiness is lovely and it has some lasting power and a fair bit of throw. However, all in all, I find the scent kind of simple. I wish it was a bit more complex. I can see myself getting bored with this scent by the end of the day. Hm. Not sure if I'll keep this imp.

    Umbra

I expected to hate this, given the general trepidation over vetiver and my own distaste for patchouli and most of the things I've smelled that involved cinnamon. But on me the strongest note is the cedarwood, which I like. The scent is woody and slightly dusty (in fact, that was my first thought when I opened the imp: "Dust!") It smells kind of like the back of an armoire (A wardrobe, anyone?) And vetiver? Not that I know what it smells like, but thus far, no problem. This is actually my favorite "dark" scent thus far (aside from Les Fleurs du Mal, which is a pretty dark floral). ETA: I've found that Umbra can be really good for darkening other scents. Appropriate, no? I like using it to cast a little shadow over something brighter.
