Mandarin, Black Vanilla, and Patchouli
dancingchair replied to Seajewel's topic in Duets & Menage A Trois
Wet, this is realistic mandarin zest, like the spritz of citrus you get when you peel an orange. The patchouli at this stage is really good to me. Combined with the black vanilla, it's sweet and more incense-heavy. As it dries, the mandarin fades and the patchouli takes the spotlight. It morphs into a lighter, more floral patchouli, which isn't really my jam. The black vanilla is light and a little powdery. In the end, it's more delicate than you would expect from the opening. Lightly floral patchouli enshrouded in a cloud of black vanilla powder, finished with a spritz of mandarin. I adore the wet stage of this perfume, but the dry stage sillage too pretty for me. I think I was hoping for a dirtier patchouli, like the patch in Schrödinger's Checkmark. If you prefer a more delicate and floral patchouli and you like citrus, this ménage is probably a good fit for you. -
This is mostly a musky honey on me. I think I get the berries while the perfume is wet, but as it dries the honeyed musk takes over. The maple manifests more as maple syrup to me more than dead leaves. This is closer to Honey Taffy Smut than Bears of Berlin to me. This is not a delicate, powdery honey nor is it the honey you'd get from a plastic bear. The musk is a bit animalic, but I like it for that. I like this quite a bit and I'm glad I got to try it.

Wet, this is a blast of musk and opoponax. As it dries, the snake scales take over. The snake scale note is very leathery, like a black leather in particular. I was kind of expecting this to be wet and stony, but I don't really get much aquatic or stone from this. There is something a warm and spicy in here, but that might be the opoponax. I can't pick out the moonmilk in particular, but I think it's adding a smooth sweetness to the other notes. I think I'd sum this up as resinous and musky incense and leather. Not exactly my jam, but it was neat to try!

Sweet Amber, Praline, and Patchouli
dancingchair replied to Seajewel's topic in Duets & Menage A Trois
Echoing the other reviews to say that I also get mostly praline. On my skin, the gobs of brown sugar and pecans are overtaken by cinnamon, nutmeg, dusty clove. The patchouli is in the background, threading the sugar-coated spices with rich incense. This is a bit of a skin chemistry fail for me. I really amp baking spices and this is no exception. It was nice to try, though!- 5 replies

Almond Blossoms, Patchouli, and Sea Salt
dancingchair replied to Seajewel's topic in Duets & Menage A Trois
In the vial, I mostly get sugared, dark patchouli. On my skin, the patchouli is also the center of attention. The almond blossom is delicate, mostly only around to add a sheer nut tinge to the patchouli. After the perfume dries on my skin, I can smell the sea salt only if I sniff my skin up close. It's more like the salty aftermath of sweat dried on skin after a hard workout than salt from ocean spray.- 4 replies

In the bottle and wet on my skin, this is surprisingly fruity in a tropical way. I think there's coconut in there, but it's very green and fleshy. There's also loud notes of sugar and syrup that drown out the quiet coconut. Somewhere between the stages where this perfume is wet and has settled after drying, the weed note comes out. It's loud and grassy, but it doesn't stick around for very long. After drying, this perfume becomes a soft mango and coconut skin smell, intertwined with a delicate sugar note. Not at all what I was expecting. I thought I got a mislabeled decant at first because it's so fruity, but I think it might be how the oleaginous notes smell to me? It smells yummy, but it reminds me more of Gentle Hands than a coconut perfume.

This is a thick, fudgy cup of hot cocoa with a fat marshmallow bobbing in the froth. Very indulgent, but really delicious.

Sweet, buttery porridge. It does have a spice note, which is more nutmeg than anything else. There are nuts mixed in, evening out the sweetness a little bit. Pretty straightforward but quite yummy.

A sweet base of spiced vanilla taffy dusted with salt. The taffy isn't cloying, but it does read as candy-like to me. I think the spice leans more towards clove and incense than cinnamon and baked goods. The salt note doesn't really read as an aquatic to me. The spices are probably the strongest notes to me, but my skin tends to amp spice. I don't really get fruit at all. I let this settle for a couple of weeks and now it's pretty nice!

This is all about the incense on me. Billowing clouds of strong incense curling around a soft and fluffy base of sweet amber and lightly honeyed milk. The almond is barely there, flavoring the other notes.

Dry, dusty clove with an oakmoss backing. The splash of tobacco adds a bit of sweetness, but it's just there to support the clove. I can see bergamot in here, too. There's something in the fougere that's sweet and a little citrusy.

This is a lovely blend of aquatic and woods. It doesn't go laundry on me and I think it comes close to capturing that salty note that hangs in the air when you're somewhere on a coast. All the oceanic notes blend together well so they're hard to pick out individually. I do get wet stone under all the aquatics. The balsam contributes a flash of coastal forest, or maybe a washed-up piece of driftwood. The tobacco flower is the heart of this blend. Once the perfume settles on your skin for a while, it peeks out from between the waves. Because it's the flower, it's not as thick and chewy as other tobacco notes but it does still have that rich caramel sweetness that I adore. I don't really get the tea note, but it may be because the other notes drown it out. This is probably my favorite aquatic. I stupidly only bought a decant last year that I've been carefully rationing so I was really happy I could pick up a bottle this year. I love it for warm days when I don't want to wear something heavy.

I tried this fresh out of the mailbox and it was much more candy-like. A week or so later and this has settled into something more like a delicate sugared watermelon white floral. The sugar note is complex yet fragile, like a lace doily made out of spun sugar. The watermelon is more like salty watermelon taffy to me after spending some time resting. I also get a nice, smooth gourmand vanilla note in the background. Something about how the notes come together reminds me of a white floral, but it's not stinky or overwhelming in any way. It's very pretty.

The cacao in this reminds me strongly of Muddy Armadillo, but here it's paired with a lovely smoky vetiver instead of a sticky sweet tobacco note. The vetiver lends this perfume a grassy texture. This would be pretty dry and dusty (and smells this way in the bottle), but the patchouli sweetens everything up nicely. I can't really pick out the musk on its own but there is a fuzzy aura about this perfume. Overall, I think this is the grassy counterpart to Muddy Armadillo. This is probably how you wish a buffalo wallowing in mud on a hot summer's day smelled.

I made the mistake of trying this right out of the mailbox and it was 1000% loud nag champa. It's been a couple of weeks now, and luckily it is a much different experience. I get quite a bit of fresh and snappy black leather. The sugared patchouli is a strong supporting note, threaded with the nag champa that works to pull back the sweetness. The patchouli reminds me more of brown sugar than the delicate sugar in the recent Dried Cherry Incense trio. It's thick and chewy and it plays off the leather pretty well. I get the barest dusty whisper of the clove. Usually my skin amps spice so I'm not mad that this is more balanced. This is nice! I'm glad I picked up a decant and I'm happy with how it's developing.

This combo is as good as I'd hoped. The tobacco is indeed yummy and chewy. I get quite a bit of the scorched oak, with a big emphasis on the "scorched" part, which reads more as a smokiness swirling around in the background for me. The goat milk adds a sweet creaminess and a little bit of funk to this. This goat is pretty tobacco-heavy and it is sweet without necessarily being foody.

First and foremost, I get a lot of dry clove with a backing of cinnamon. I can't really pick out the carnation very well, but that's probably just because the other spices are so loud. The cedar and hay work really well with the spices, supporting them rather than taking over. I think the sweet black musk and amber tie everything together nicely, keeping it from being a dusty spice bomb and adding a layer of soft fur that's just a little mysterious. This is really nice and I think it evokes the image of an amorphous void cat very well. Seems like it'd be great for cool autumn days.

I never get much cherry in this. It's mostly clove and spicy myrrh. I'm not sure what dragon's blood smells like, but there's something sinister and smoky in the background that might be it? Seems like this would be great for layering if you want to add some spicy incense to a perfume. Spice really tends to amp on my skin, though, so maybe the clove wouldn't be so loud on someone else.

Wet, the cherry is strong and sweet. As it dries, the incense comes out more. It's not super strong, but it is dark and smoky. The spun sugar is balancing everything out and keeping everything light. I didn't pick this up right away because I'm pretty picky about incense notes, but this is really nice.

Sugary sweet cherry and another note that I can't pin down. To me, it morphs from a fluffy marshmallow note to the scorched milk note from Snake Milk. Maybe it's a combo of both? It did just arrive in the mail yesterday so it might need some time to settle.

Caramelized Pecan Rum Cake
dancingchair replied to Silvertree's topic in Gifts with Donation or Purchase
Wet, I got a lot of cherry-like rum. Strong and boozy! As it dries, the caramelized pecans come out more and take center stage. The cake note is rich and packed full of brown sugar. This would be great for a cold winter night. It's fairly straightforward after the rum fades away so it'd probably be good for layering if you want to add a sugar/pecan bomb to anything. -
This is a lovely atmospheric aquatic, beachy without veering into sunscreen or laundry territory. I'm not sure that I can pick out the crushed pearl accord in here. The oceanic notes give the impression of whitecapped waves blowing into a shady cove. The coconut adds a tropical flair without running the show. I get a light floral waft from the immortelle and orris, but it's not sharp or overwhelming. I'm super picky with floral notes and the florals here add to the atmospheric effect of a beach paradise rather than amping to an unpleasant sharpness on my skin. I want to go to this beach! I will definitely enjoy the rest of this decant, it's a lovely aquatic.

This is gorgeous, even though I'm not sure it's really me. The rose is perfect, intertwining with the Snake Oil patchouli and musk. The vanilla is hard to find here, though maybe it will come out more with age. All the Snake Oil spices are amplified and they pair very well with the patchouli/rose combo. This is spicy rose Snake Oil. The throw and longevity are big, so a little goes a long way. I'm happy with my decant, but I can see why people enjoy this one so much.

2023 version Wet, this is some incredible birthday rainbow sprinkle cake smeared with pink frosting. As it dries, the cake tones down and you're left with the pink cotton candy frosting and cardamom cake crumbs. I don't get a lot of cardamom, it's just there to spice up the cake a bit rather than being a main player. This is really yummy, but I wish that good cake note stuck around a bit longer.

2023 version Something is going really weird with this one on my skin. Wet, it's quite minty, probably the mintiest perfume I've ever tried. Unlike other reviewers, I don't really lose the mint as the scent wears on my skin, it just quiets down. The mint combined with the other notes becomes an odd, mildewy scent. I don't get pistachio and it's not particularly sweet. Maybe I'll have to try this again after letting the decant rest more? Really strange skin chemistry fail.
