Dead Leaves, Lavender Buds, and Golden Sandalwood

In the bottle, it was mostly dead leaves — but on, it’s a beautiful blend of that trampled on green and brown, almost wet dead leaves smell mixed with a gentle, floating without being fluffy lavender and sandalwood. Sometimes BPAL uses a sandalwood that is a little harsh on my skin but this blends in nicely. I really love this one. I thought it might be too lavender for daytime use and enjoyed the thought of a sleepy dead leaves scent but this one works well for a cozy Fall day. Leans somewhere between androgynous and soft masc without feeling like you’re wearing a gentleman’s cologne. Would pair nicely with a rainy day doing laundry and listening to lofi. -
Roared out of the bottle like "we're barbequing tonight!" Almost immediately tempered itself to a dry leaf bonfire. Smells different than a campfire on me, but I'm PNW so maybe the type of wood we have around here makes our campfires smell different. But it reminds me of the Easter I spent with my aunt in the Midwest, where they set a bonfire in the backyard (Midwest things, I guess.) Dead leaves, sticks, just whatever you find in the yard after cleaning up the beds -- and then smoke. Gentle, warm, cozy.

Smells like a pumpkin spice maple bar, but just the icing. Not the donut itself. West Coasters, you know what I'm talking about. Not too sweet, not headache-inducing. Just perfect.

2023 Version Completely unwearable last year, all coffee and nothing else. But amazing after about a year of sitting and waiting. The espresso is the perfect foundation for the whirl of spice. I’m getting cinnamon and nutmeg, and it’s the most comforting thing in the world today. I’ve wanted to bust back into my Weenies and I’m so glad I did.

This one doesn't work for me until about an hour after I put it on. The teak note is aggressive and I wish I could give it to the people who want more teak! But after that calms down, it's just a beautiful cloud of something I can't quite put my finger on but enjoy.

I was really excited to try this one the minute I read the description and I’m very happy with it. The strawberry goes on strong and tart but has an immediate dry down to something sweet and fluffy and pink. This smells exactly like it’s described: it’s a glass of baby pink sugary sweet strawberry milk, not a seed to be found, topped with a dollop of thick marshmallow cream (stiff peaks!) It’s pretty and unpretentious, the olfactory equivalent of getting a fond smile with a little head tilt. Oh, you. I hope it lasts, otherwise I’ll need to grab another bottle because I know I’ll be reaching for this again this summer. Edit: It's been four hours and it's still going strong. I have the ceiling fan on and wow, it's wafting and beautiful. A second bottle is a must. This is just too pretty to imagine a world without Pink Moon in it. Edit: I'm nine hours in and it's mostly faded to a nice fluffy strawberry milk. I'm really impressed at the longevity. Unexpectedly my favorite blend this year. Pretty pink girl smells.

The smell of sleep, all bottled up. It’s mostly light lavender and tart vanilla on me. I wasn’t looking for a sleep scent but I keep reaching for this one and then falling asleep in record time.

Wow! I have been having great luck with the Shungas this year and this one is no exception. Full disclosure, I was not sure about it in the bottle or wet. This one starts more muted before blooming on my skin. The honey and coconut milk were the first to take center stage; it never got too sweet, though, which is great because my skin amplifies sweet things. The red currant was hard to pick out on its own and seemed to just lightly color the edges. It stayed very coconut milk-forward throughout the first few hours of dry-down. I put this on around 6:30 AM and now it's about 11 AM and now I'm getting a honeyed (Nepalese, possibly?) amber. Not too thick, not at all cloying. It's sexy and confident, without demanding attention. Grounded, effortless. Infinitely wearable, my skin but better. I am obsessed.

I absolutely love a citrus perfume, even if my skin devours it down. This one wears strong and sour when wet, and I was glad I only dabbed it on my wrists to start out with rather than putting it behind my ears. Yuzu straight to the face. The dry-down shift was very noticeable - it became softer and musky. If wet, it was a neon yellow, tinged a little with green, then dry it's more of a pastel lemon. The white musk and white tea really softens it, without adding any sweet creaminess. Really lovely, I'm glad I got a bottle. It's going to be great for spring and summer.

I went back and forth on Cat Stealing a Fish because vetiver and I don't always get along, but this blend is perfect. I'm getting mostly salty driftwood (emphasis on the salt) and ocean spray. It's aquatic without going too soapy or floral, and it's anchored well by the driftwood, ambergris, and vetiver. I am delighted by this one. I am a coastal person at heart and this makes me feel like I have a little bit of it with me.

This one was far too sweet for me to wear when I got it last year, so I bundled it up and put it in the closet. After aging for about a year, it's still syrupy sweet when it's wet, but I can smell more of the components after the drydown. It's very much a sandalwood buttercream on me, with a splash of fig. I've been wearing it for the last 8 hours and it's still going strong. I am glad that I held onto it but I am going to have to make a note to myself not to slather. I am really curious to see where it's at next year -- ideally, it'd tone down just a notch or two. I might just amp sweet notes.

Startlingly beautiful. I wasn't sure how it would go, but it's amazing. I love it when coconut smells a little rainy, and that's exactly how this coconut wears on me. The lavender is soft without being too sweet. Infinitely wearable, I'll be popping it into my shopping card for my next Yules order.

Fuzzy and comforting, but oh so very fleeting. The lavender is my favorite type, almost astringent; it burns off pretty quickly and then it's a lovely fur, ambrette seed, and brown leather. I kept sniffing my wrists while grocery shopping and sighing happily to myself. It's about 4 hours later and it's entirely gone. A lovely weekend scent, made for fluffy socks and coffee.

Delightful! This is my first Lick It variant and I am loving it. It goes on a sweet peppermint and then dries down to a sugary vanilla mint. I would have preferred a stronger peppermint (I'm a straight Dr. Bronner's kind of kid) but the vanilla mint is lovely and lasted on me from early afternoon until bedtime. I can see myself wearing this through spring and maybe even in the summer on especially hot days.

Out of all of my Yule purchases, this was the one I was most excited about and it lived up my expectations. The honey cream is light and sweet, whipped rather than thick and dripping. I don't get a lot of butter but the amber rounded it all out deliciously. All together, there's something almost translucent; it feels like a "my skin but sweeter" scent, very intimate and cozy. I am so glad that I picked up a bottle! (I know it says sebaceous and slimy, but this scent comes off incredibly clean. I feel like I took a really lovely bubble bath and have come out all warm and clean and relaxed.)

I slathered this one, and definitely had a moment of "oops, that was a mistake" when all I could smell was the patchouli but the gingerbread has become much more pronounced and the sugared vanilla bean is in there. Altogether, it's almost effervescent, incredibly beautiful, spicy and warm. A very comforting scent--if I went to hug someone who was wearing this, I would probably find myself pressing in closer. I am not a huge Snake Oil fan, but this is a lovely variant, and I am thrilled I picked it up. I think this will age very nicely and be even better next year.

2023 Version Wet and on the arm, it’s all green, almost camphorous sap. Very quickly, that dies down and I get hit with leaves — red and orange leaves, not yet dry and crunchy. The smoke comes later but when it does, it’s absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of walking slowly through my old neighborhood, with fires in the fireplace, stomping through piles of leaves before they get swept up. This perfume has very little throw on me, and lingers for about 6 hours close to the skin. It’ll be a neck pulse wear for sure since I can’t smell it to save my life on my wrists. I am a little concerned though because I can smell the sap even with the bottle closed tightly. My cabinet was super sappy this morning. Hoping the cap is okay!

I had to look up “evaporated milk” to see if I had made a mistake, because this one is…sweet. Overly sweet, to the point that I’m not getting any musk, nothing milky. Just syrup, almost floral, intense throw. I’ll need to let this one rest for a bit and try again, because I feel like the notes have potential.

This was an immediate purchase based on the promise of lavender and loam. Do you like Zombi? Is it because of the dirt? Me too. Unfortunately, there’s only a hint of dirt smell in this perfume. The creamy, milky notes dominate; I was expecting a sharper lavender and dirt scent. Slumber Ghoul is very gentle, sort of a soft lavender cloud. Not sweet, just a hint of depth that is quickly gobbled up by my skin. I cannot stress it enough that I would pay good, good money for a lavender Zombi.
