    Spanish Red Carnation

Comparison of Spanish Red Carnation and the original Carnation SN of '04 Spanish Red Carnation In The Bottle: Heady, sweet, creamy, and just a bit spicy On Skin: Even less spicy than in the bottle.... sweet, creamy, and VERY heady. After a few moments though, a fairly prominent green note appears (leaves, stems, etc). The longer I have this scent on, the stronger the green note gets.... that is until about 1 hour in. At that point the green note begins to disappear along with the last traces of spiciness, leaving only that very heady floral scent in their stead. Carnation In The Vial: Dark, very spicy, almost resinous. Wow! I'm actually surprised the two are so different. On Skin: Still dark and spicy, but a hint of sweet heady floral develops in the background (not at all the same heady floral that Spanish Red Carnation has though.... this is much deeper and of course refrains from taking over the scent as it does in SRC). From beginning to end, I never smell even a hint of green. Two surprisingly different scents, but which is better? I don't love either one to be honest.... if Spanish Red Carnation smelled the same on my skin as it does in the bottle, I would say that one was my favorite. But.... I detest the green note it develops and it's way too boring after the spiciness fades away. And as a foody, the original Carnation isn't sweet enough for me.....

    Annurca Apple Blossom

Comparison of Annurca Apple Blossom to the original Apple Blossom SN of '04 Annurca Apple Blossom In the Bottle: I hate to say this, but.... it smells like a canned scent you'd find at B&B. It's sour (like a granny smith apple that's had every hint of sweetness sucked right out of it) and aquatic with just a hint of floral. I love apple blossom, but this smells nothing like any apple blossom I've ever come in contact with before (perhaps Annurca is a very different smelling species) On My Skin: Very aquatic, a bit sharp, still sour, and even less apply than in the bottle. I have an intense dislike for this scent. To zz: I thoroughly enjoy my heathen ways I can certainly see why you like it though. I think anyone who likes Snow Glass Apples would be pleased with this scent as well. Apple Blossom In the Vial: Sweet, apply, not nearly as floral as you'd think..... very pretty. On My Skin: Still sweet and apply, but unfortunately this scent has a habit of turning a bit green on my skin.... leaves, green branches, etc. I keep a bit 'cause I love to sniff it, but never wear it for that reason. Two very different scents. If you like aquatic scents, Annurca is the one for you. If you were hoping for something sweet and fruity.... the original would be a much better fit for you if you can find it.

Jonathan's Coffee House Atmospheric Spray v1

I don't know why I haven't reviewed this yet.... I love the smell of Coffee. Real coffee that is. The various coffee notes found in most perfumes.... not so much. Most have a plastic edge to them. Many smell stale. Some are so dark and unsweet that they almost smell burnt. I've tried so many eternally hoping for the real thing, but I am always disappointed. Jonathan's Coffee House is the one and (so far) only exception. It's rich, smooth, creamy, and sweet (but not too sweet). There's definitely a mocha note, as well as cream and sugar. It's strong and long-lasting... a few sprays i all I need The closest perfume I've found is IXHV4 (another prototype). I do like it, but it doesn't compare to the glory of J's Coffee House (too dark, not sweet enough, more... simple) Even though it's taboo to do so, I occasionally spray some in my hair. Probably not the brightest idea, but I've never had a reaction of any kind and it smells sooooo good. This prototype was sold only at the very first cobwebs, which happened over three years ago. The more time passes, the more I doubt the lab has any intention of releasing this (I've heard no discussion on it or any collection that it would fit with). But thanks to a swap with a friend, I do have enough to last me a very long time (probably more than I will end up using to be honest) :wub2:

    Batty

After noticing that several of the above reviews mentioned 'masculine' and 'cologne-like' I realized that Batty was probably doomed to fail on me. I am never lucky enough to amp chocolate or vanilla/tonka, but masculine notes seam to love my skin However, this appears to be the one exception! Smells like cocoa powder and oleander in the bottle…. pretty, but perhaps too sharp for me. On my skin it becomes a gorgeous fusion of cocoa, sandalwood, tonka, and just a hint of a very soft, furry musk. Sexy, dark, and sweet (but not quite sweet enough to be considered foody). Nothing sharp or cologne-like about it and definitely not masculine LOVE!!!

Chaos Theory VI: Recursive Self-Similarity v7

#82 (no previous reviews here, but the the original owner described it as vanilla and cake) In the Bottle: Cream and amber. This is like Glowing Vulva WITHOUT the lotus blossom or teak. Even though GV isn't my thing at all, I think this is pretty in the bottle (probably because of the lack of teak... one of my most hated notes). Still though.... I'm not too optimistic about it since the amber in Vulva turned to weirdness once on my skin... On my Skin: The cream is still lovely, but as feared, the amber has begun to smell a little like play-do (as amber always does on my skin). However, after just a few minutes the amber disappears almost completely. And then, a very creamy vanilla note appears along with the cake the previous owner mentioned. The cake has no frosting though, so despite the notes this isn't an extremely sweet buttercream icing type scent.... it's more of a soft sweet scent. Like a more foody Glowing Vulva that doesn't turn nearly as funky on my skin.

    Crypt King

To be honest, I really really wanted to try this (I mean, 10 yr old patchouli.... I gotta know what that smells like), but I didn't expect to like it since I am mostly a foody girl In the Bottle: Pomegranate juice, oakmoss, coriander, patchouli, and lilac cologne.... masculine and a little astringent. Pretty much what I had expected On my Skin: Pomegranate juice and a soft, sweet lilac cologne with black ginger, black pepper, and a hint of patchouli. It's definitely less astringent/masculine than it was in the bottle. In about 5 minutes, this scent becomes pretty spicy. It's not a hot spice at all.... it's a softer, darker spice: black pepper, black ginger (most ginger notes turn to lemon on me, but there isn't even a hint of lemon in this... only spice), pomegranate juice, and a hint of patchouli. The lilac cologne is totally gone and the patchouli is, surprisingly, very soft. At this stage on my skin, I would call Crypt King a unisex scent I don't care for it in the bottle (too masculine), but I do like it after a few moments on my skin. I wouldn't say I love it enough to keep it (I only keep bottles I absolutely love and as I mentioned above.... I'm a foody), but this was a surprisingly pleasant scent

    Beaver Moon 2011

Wow.... that's quite a batch variation! First Bottle (the incense version) In the Bottle: very smoky incense and a generic men's cologne. Absolutely no cheesekcake or honey to be found. On my Skin: The lavender reveals itself, but the scent stays pretty much the same The exact opposite of what I was hoping for Second Bottle (the cheesecake version) In the Bottle: LAVENDER with a little honey and perhaps a crumb of cheesecake (but I have to really concentrate to notice it) . I was hoping for less lavender and more of the other notes, so I'm getting worried.... On my Skin: When first applied, the lavender calms down a bit, but it's still at the forefront. The honey is much stronger and I can definitely smell the cheesecake now. Things are looking up! In just about 5 minutes or so, the honey is victorious and swallows the evil lavender.... well, not completely. It's still there, but it's very quiet. A few minutes later, the cheesecake becomes stronger and is right there with the honey! Fabulous! I now have a honey/cheesecake scent, with just a smidge of lavender. I love it! It's actually reminiscent of Beaver Moon '05 / Beaver'versary (on my skin at least.... certainly not in the bottle)

Chaos Theory VI: Recursive Self-Similarity v7

#42 (previously reviewed here and here) A rich creamy vanilla, lime, cake, and fizz. This lime is a little unusual per BPAL limes…. it's sweet but not candied, a bit tangy but never sour, creamy but still light. It's like….. a lime smoothie note (too light to be key lime pie, but too creamy to be a fresh or candied). Lime tends to steamroll over other notes when on my skin, but not in this blend. Then there's the fizz. It's not champagne or any actual smell really. It's just effervescence. This scent stays pretty much the same on my skin.... definitely not a morpher. It has a decent amount of throw too (especially for a citrus scent) and has very good lasting power

    What Scent Is This?

It's probably Faeu Boulanger, a Carnival Diabolique scent. Here ya go - http://www.bpal.org/topic/45748-faeu-boulanger/

    What Scent Is This?

Asked on LJ quite a while back, but didn't get a helpful answer..... thought I'd try here. I received a partial decant as a frimp and the label is impossible to make out. Problem is, I absolutely love the scent. The girl I swapped with has no idea where it came from or what it could be. At the bottom of the label, it clearly says BPTP (so I suppose that means that it might even be a bath or message oil). But.... I looked through the BPTP reviews and not one single name looks similar to this label. Perhaps the decanter was mistaken and it isn't a BPTP scent? It appears to be 3 words. The first one starts with M or N with 3 or 4 letters following. The second word also starts with M or N with 4 letters following. The third word has 4 letters and ends in Y or G There's also a chance that it might really be 1 or 2 words split into 3 parts or that the name was shortened or abbreviated, because it was squeezed onto a small round label The scent itself is sweet and foody (I find this especially odd because I could swear I've tried every foody scent that BPAL or BPTP has ever created and I do not remember this one). It's kind of like a cross between Boo and Midway A big thank you to anyone who has time to take a guess....

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

Soooo..... Cabaret.Goth is the first BPAL perfume my boyfriend has ever liked. EVER. Are they any scents that are somewhat similar? Not just looking for GC recs here.... looking for ANYTHING (LE, event exclusive, discontinued, etc)

    Le Cafe Du Rat-Mort

I had heard about this prototype several years ago.... however, it seamed very few people had tried it at the time (it was only sold at the first cobwebs event and I don't think there were very many bottles to go around). The only description I'd seen was 'minty'. However, Puddin was a sweetie and sent out Goblin Squirts in several recent BPTP orders. Not sure whether they're the exact same version as the bottle though In the Bottle: anise and mint Sprayed and Given a Few Moments to Settle: mint, anise, sugar, and a faint white floral note Definitely more of a 'me' scent than it sounded by the other reviews. I like it, but it's still not quite my thing edited for spelling errors

The Second of the Three Spirits

In the Bottle: Holly, pine, sugared chestnuts, and hint of fruit punch (mostly orange) Wet on Skin: Holly, pine, sugared chestnuts, spice, and a hint of orange fruit punch Dry: Holly, pine, sugared chestnuts, spice, and hints of orange fruit punch and berry After about a 1/2 hr - holly, pine, pear (finally), sugared chestnuts (not as strong as before), orange fruit punch (stronger than before), spice, & a hint of berry After about 1 hr - pear (now the strongest note), holly, and hints of berry, orange fruit punch, and pine (the sugared chestnuts and the spice have disappeared) This is really not what I had expected or hoped for. I had thought it'd be a fruity/foody scent what with the pears, the plum pudding, the orange punch, and the berries. However, this scent is very green and nutty on me at first and finishes as very green and fruity. I never even smell a hint of plum pudding, which is the note I was hoping for the most

    Whoop

In the Bottle: Pine Cone!!!!! Lots and lots of pine cone….. also, there's a little amber, honey, and a touch of bayberry Wet on Skin: Pine Cone (not quite as strong as it was in the bottle), amber (starting to turn weird on me as usual), honey, cranberry, & bayberry Dry: Amber (oh god it's just awful on my skin), honey, pine cone (not nearly as strong as before), cranberry, & spice (no pumpkin pie unfortunately…. just the spice) Amber almost always does horrid things on my skin… sometimes it turns into powder, sometimes it turns into play-do, sometimes it turns into vinyl, and sometimes it turns into dirty socks. Unfortunately this has gone the dirty sock route. I gotta go wash this off STAT

    A World of Fools

In the Bottle: Dark fruit (not specifically fig though) with something sugary and a bit creamy Wet on Skin: Very dark fruit still with something sugary in the background, but the note is fainter and much less creamy than it was in the bottle Dry: Incredibly dark fruit with hints of sugar and holly The fruit note just continues to darken even after I think it can't possibly get any darker. After about 1 hr, it becomes an almost resinous note and both the sugar and the holly disappear completely I describe the fruit note as dark in my review for lack of a better word.... it's not at all sweet and it's not at all green. It's very heavy and devoid of light.... I would actually call it resinous. I can definitely see why Edens Sixth Day described this scent as she did.... I was hoping this would be a sweet foody scent. It's not

    Changing the Shadows

In the Bottle: Very strong tea (or perhaps it's the mate...). I really hate this note because it's overpowering and very bitter. There's also a hint of orange blossom Wet on Skin: Soooo much better - orange blossom (sweet, but a little green), vanilla, carnation, & tea (still just as bitter, but it's waaaay less noticeable) Dry: Orange Blossom, carnation, & vanilla. The tea (or mate.... whatever it was) is totally gone now!!! So, I'm a foody all the way. Since this isn't a foody scent, it's not quite my thing. A full bottle is a bit too much for me, but I would like to have a low partial lying around for the rare times when I'm in the mood for something outside of my norm

    Bob Cratchit's Hearth

In the Bottle: Fruity (mostly orange, but there are definitely a few other fruits in here as well) & alcoholic with a hint of.... I could swear cinnamon Wet on Skin: The cinnamon is a lot stronger on than it was in the bottle, firewood (but no smoke), alcohol, & a hint of fruit Dry: sugary sweet cinnamon and lots of it, firewood, & hints of alcohol and fruit The cinnamon was unexpected.... since there's no cinnamon listed in the notes (and it doesn't look like sherry cobbler is meant to contain spice), I have to assume that I'm not really smelling cinnamon, but rather something else that my nose is reading as cinnamon. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of smoke, but this scent is too spicy for me For those of you who aren't sure what Sherry Cobbler is, it is NOT a dessert (as I originally thought before reading the whole description ). It's an alcoholic beverage usually made with sherry wine, sugar, and oranges

    The Soldier

In the Bottle: Leather and red musk (very similar to one of the musk notes used in Smut) with hints of black pepper, pastry, and vanilla cream Wet on Skin: vanilla cream, leather, red musk, pastry (I'm not getting anything really specific here… just sort of a pie dough type note), & black pepper Dry: Pastry (again, nothing really specific… just pie dough), vanilla cream, leather, & red musk After about 1/2 an hr or so, the leather and red musk become stronger and the vanilla cream & pastry fade into the background This smelled strongly of leather and red musk in the bottle, but for a short time, this actually smelled the way I wanted it to on my skin - more foodie, less red musk/leather. However, that lovely foodie confection didn't last nearly long enough before the red musk/leather took over again I see that several other people have mentioned anise, licorice, & sarsaparilla. The blending of these notes does give a slight impression of those (personally I would say it's closest to sarsaparilla), but I don't think there's actually any in here
  19. SurrealReality

The First of the Three Spirits

In the Bottle: Vanilla (not quite foody, but almost), white musk, and amber with a hint of earthly florals Wet on Skin: Earthy florals, white musk, and something sour…. really not sure what it is. Amber almost always does odd things on my skin, but sour would be something new….. Dry: Earthy florals (which I am now assuming is zdravetz), lighter florals, white musk, still with something very sour…… After about 1/2 hr the something sour pretty much smothers everything else It was pretty in the bottle, but really bad on my skin
  20. SurrealReality

    Harlequin and Columbine

In the Bottle: Balsam, sage, & lemon peel with hints of vanilla and pomegranate Wet on Skin: Whoa! Something in this is turning incredibly powdery on me! Sweet powder, lemon peel, balsam, sage, & a hint of pomegranate Dry: It's mostly sweet powder with hints of lemon peel, balsam, sage, & pomegranate After about 1/2 hr, the balsam and sage disappear leaving tons of sweet powder with hints of lemon peel and pomegranate After about 1 hr - pomegranate (stronger than before), red currant (can finally smell this note!), & sweet powder (considerably less prominent); the lemon peel has disappeared After about 1 1/2 hrs - pomegranate, mandarin (it's about time you showed up....), red currant, & a hint of sweet powder It was too masculine for me in the bottle, and while it was much sweeter and more feminine on my skin, it was also far too powdery during the first hour or so. Pass Edited because I can't spell....
  21. SurrealReality

    Lilith's Tea Party

In the Bottle: strawberries (I'm very picky with strawberry notes, and this is too fresh for me), cake, and hints of red rose and tea Wet on Skin: strawberries, red rose, and hints of cake and tea Dry: FLOWERS!!!!! Which is of course, exactly what I was hoping to avoid. I can't tell you exactly when they are, but I am sure the mixture includes white florals and probably daisies. Oh, and um…. also, there are still hints of strawberries, tea, and cake. Not for long though. After just a few minutes, the flowers overtake the entire scent When I first read the scent description, I didn't even wanna try it. The 'one-thousand imaginary flowers' scared me off. But then, I read the reviews and a lot of people said they could barely smell the flowers, so I decided to take a chance. Shoulda gone with my first instinct

    Anne Beany

In the Bottle: Not what I was hoping for. I've never liked the smell of rum (in perfumes anyway) because It reminds me of banana flavored bubble gum. I thought that since the rum in this is meant to be virgin, it might be ok. I was wrong. Sooo..... in the bottle banana flavored bubble gum (aka rum), butterscotch, and ice cream Wet on Skin: Rum, butterscotch, ice cream, & a hint of cheesecake crust (not the actual cheesecake mind you, just the crust) Dry: Lots and lots of rum, lots and lots of butterscotch (I like butterscotch, but this is just too much of it at once), cheesecake crust, & just a hint of ice cream. After about 1/2 hr, the cheesecake crust get far stronger and the rum gets considerably weaker. After about 1 hour, I can finally smell just a tiny hint of cheesecake, but it never gets stronger than that I had wanted an ice cream and cheesecake scent with a little crust and butterscotch and only a touch of rum. What I got was a rum, butterscotch, and crust scent with only touches of ice cream and cheesecake

    Mabon 2010

Side by Side Reviews of Mabon '04 & Mabon 2010 (hope this is allowed in the 2010 thread) Mabon '04 in the Bottle: Smooth, sweet (but not sugary) blackberry, apple cider, and a hint of apple blossom Mabon 2010 in the Bottle: Hops, chamomile, and sage are the strongest notes, followed by sweetgrass, nuts, apple, a few other herbs, and a tiny hint of blackberry Mabon '04 Wet on Skin: Smooth, sweet (but again not sugary) blackberry, apple cider, and hints of myrrh, oak bark, and perhaps a tiiiiny hint of sage Mabon 2010 Wet on Skin: Sage and lots of it, hops, chamomile, sweetgrass, ivy, nuts, & oak bark.... I'm barely getting any apple now and I really don't get any blackberry at all Mabon '04 Dry: Apple cider is the strongest note now, followed by blackberry, myrrh, oak bark, and a hint of apple blossom. After about 1 hr on my skin, blackberry is the strongest note again, followed by apple cider, with only hints of myrrh & oak bark Mabon 2010 Dry: Any hint of apple is definitely gone and the nuts and oak bark have faded too. Now it's just herbal and green. About 1 hr later though, the nuts and oak bark return I have to say I'm surprised. There is almost no similarity between the two scents. If you're looking for a moderately sweet fruit & woods scent, you want '04; if you're looking for a dry herbal/green woody scent, you want 2010

What do bottles and labels look like?

It sounds like it; here's the description of 05: Thoroughly revisited. This year's Hearth is warmer, sweeter, and more traditionally comforting. This is the scent of candied chestnuts, buttered, covered in brown sugar and honey, alongside the scent of cedar smoke and soft pine. 04' s description: Sweet pipe tobacco, cherry wood, the warm, worn leather of an easy chair and a pleasant, subtle waft of fireplace smoke I was looking for pics of the labels, but i can't find any, only Hearth V2 proto. And now I can't turn off the italics! I'm not entirely sure what the '04 label looked like, but as for as I know all of the other '04 yules had a plain (GCish) label. The '05 version does have a fireplace, however it should say 2005 on the top left corner
