Credit for some of the first recorded accounts of eclipses are attributed to the legendary Drunk Astronomers, Ho and Hsi, circa 2137 BCE. Ho and Hsi were royal astronomers in the court of Chung Kang. They were in charge of predicting the celestial dance all movements of the Heavenly Bodies. They were also reprobates, and spent a fair amount of their time in debauch, drinking and carousing. In a drunken stupor though they knew an eclipse was imminent they failed to notify the emperor of the event, and they failed to perform the sacred rites that would prevent the celestial dragon from consuming the mighty sun. They were summarily decapitated for creating chaos and confusion in the celestial chain by leaving their duties unperformed. Here lie the bodies of Ho and Hsi, Whose fate, though sad, is risible; Being slain because they could not spy The eclipse which was invisible. Jasmine tea, blood musk, and pale yellow amber. I'm in the path of totality, and I'm wearing this. I'm not drunk (yet,) but I smell great. This is in general a perfect lighter summer scent. It smells sunny and indeed a bit boozy, as in a sweet, nectary liqueur. I usually can smell individual components jumping out at me, but other than the initial rush of amber, which is typical on my skin, the blend holds together beautifully. The dry-down is close to the skin and something that warms up with your skin and smells lovely, but not overwhelming. I'd say a bit more, but the eclipse is about to begin and the sun is shining -- thanks to Beth and Black Phoenix for giving me the perfect fragrance for the celebration!

By now it was about midday and a darkness fell over the whole land, which lasted until three in the afternoon; the suns light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus gave a loud cry and said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit; and with these words he died. Radiant golden amber suffused with holy incense smoke compounded from acacia, myrrh, cassia, balsam, frankincense, cinnamon, onycha accord, and galbanum. Cassia, cinnamon, galbanum, and amber and smoke. This one is a very spice-cassia heavy blend with amber and smoke. It's golden, and burning, and both a blinding shining sort of blend, and a dark smothering sort. I think its the heaviness of the spices that leads to an almost occlusive quality. Great throw and wear length.

Mabel Loomis Todd is probably best known as the first editor of Emily Dickinsons poetry and editor of publications of Dickinsons posthumous works. She was also a fearless and experienced adventuress, eclipse chaser and astronomer, and trekked over the globe locating unobscured sites to witness solar eclipses. She published Total Eclipses of the Sun in 1894, a list of past and future total solar eclipses, and recorded her experiences in her travels through painting and journals. Rose-tinted amber, golden chypre, ambergris, tobacco leaf, and clove. mostly a strong ambergris/tobacco combo, similar to Hag Grey hair gloss, only the tobacco is louder and grittier, enhanced by the spicy sidekick of clove. while I do get some rose in the bottle and when first applied, the floral sweetness vanishes during drydown and I'm left with something strong, dark and authoritative. powerful stuff! eta, after 5 days of settling, this dries down to a dark rich ambergris-focused perfume. the rose amber feels more emollient in spirit and the tobacco clove lend a dark gritty edge to the ambergris: aka ambergrit?

As when the Sun, new risen, Looks through the horizontal misty air, Shorn of his beams, or from behind the Moon, In dim eclipse, disastrous twilight sheds On half the nations and with fear of change Perplexes monarchs. – John Milton, Paradise Lost Star-touched blue amber, gurjum balsam, pale orris, Somalian myrrh, benzoin, red sandalwood, and ylang ylang. In the bottle: Misty blue. I dunno, that's what it is. Wet on my skin: I have no idea what this is that I'm smelling. It's REALLY STRANGE but I also can't stop sniffing the crook of my elbow. It goes on smelling a bit like a nice herbal shampoo, but quickly loses that and settles into something I can honestly only describe as "misty blue" as it dries. Dry: This is a very, very unusual, atmospheric, and honestly just WEIRD scent. It's definitely in the Oriental family, with soft woods and resins lending a lightly golden backdrop to the rest of the notes. The blue amber, orris, and ylang ylang just do this THING, though, and I'm having a hard time describing it in terms of actual notes, because it's exceptionally well-blended and one of those scents that is more than the sum of its parts. It's the colour of the blue-grey mist that rolls over the Midwest in the early morning, as the sun just begins to rise. Cool, soft, a little bit powdery, and very, very smooth. I haven't ever smelled anything even remotely like this before, but I already know that I like it.

In the sixth year a battle took place in which it happened, when the fight had begun, that suddenly the day became night. And this change of the day Thales the Milesian had foretold to the Ionians laying down as a limit this very year in which the change took place. The Lydians however and the Medes, when they saw that it had become night instead of day, ceased from their fighting and were much more eager both of them that peace should be made between them. – Herodotus, on a prediction of by Thales of Miletus Red amber and leather, patchouli, champaca flower, frankincense, oudh, castoreum accord, and black musk. In the bottle: chocolate and herbs? Drydown: leather and black musk ooze out from the back. There's a bit of pungentness from the castoreum accord and a hint of champaca flower. It's going a high-pitched bitter on me. Dry: I seem to amp all the wrong notes on this one. I'm thinking the castoreum is just not working for my skin because everything else in this list is fine on me. I'm hoping that someone with a different skin chemistry can help the notes blend together better. Edit: Hours later, the funk has worn off. Now it smells like a nice, incensey light leather sitting around a heart of amber. It took quite a while to get here, but it is pretty when it eventually calms down. Maybe I'll try this again tomorrow.

On this date, the first wet plate photograph of an eclipse was taken. Shimmering amber, collodion, silver nitrate accord, and white lavender. Bright, herbal, not-sweet lavender with a bit of the lab's magic-metal-smells over amber. this is big, rich and smooth. I'd kinda hoped that this would take me back to darkroom days by evoking those lovely funky developer/stop/fixer chemicals but it doesn't smell like them. this is a blessing I think for most people, who might not enjoy that level of chemical funk. this is a beautiful perfume, one that I recommend for fans of the lab's lavender scents. eta, having read the haute macabre review of this, I'll just add that to me/on me, I don't get anything even slightly soapy.

The elements manifested their sorrow at this great man’s departure from England. For the Sun on that day at the 6th hour shrouded his glorious face, as the poets say, in hideous darkness, agitating the hearts of men by an eclipse; and on the 6th day of the week early in the morning there was so great an earthquake that the ground appeared absolutely to sink down; an horrid noise being first heard beneath the surface. – Historia Novella, William of Malmesbury on the death of Henry I Golden amber and ambergris, sage and white cedar, rockrose, bourbon tobacco, and vetiver. This is predominantly tobacco and ambergris on my skin. The tobacco is the note from Bulgarian tobacco single note. It's a little chewy, in a good way. The ambergris is in support, less perfumy than usual, adding a bit of sweetness and salt. Drying, I still smell tobacco mainly but the amber and rockrose make a nice base. This is earthy and sweet. The cedarwood is quite mellow, there is an absence of the hamster fluffy material, for which I am grateful. Overall, this is very well blended. The vetiver and cedar are quite restrained. I am enjoying the tobacco and ambergris pairing with the earthy resinous under layer: Like leaves of drying tobacco strewn over a forest floor. I'll be keeping the bottle. It should pair well with Hag Grey hair gloss, but the gloss is heavier on the ambergris and the tobacco in the gloss is floral, whereas this is exactly like the dried plants.

Eclipses be predicted And Science bows them in But do one face us suddenly Jehovahs watch is wrong. Emily Dickinson Rose amber, carnation, and clove. How has no one reviewed this one yet? I've worn it 2 of the last few days since I tried it! Now 3 while I give this short review before work. It just smells like warm happy days! It is a bit drier than the usual scents I don. The scent is incredibly well balanced. It kind of gets that glowy feeling to it that some scents get. Where the scent is radiating off your skin in a warm subtle way that is difficult to describe. On me, the carnation is the strongest note. The rest of the notes balance and enhance the carnation. The amber giving additional body, the clove bringing out the spice notes of the carnation more. It's a bit heavy and fall like, the luckily plays well with heat in the summer as well! I am in love!

And the moon in haste eclipsed her, and the Sun in anger swore He would curl his wick within him and give light to you no more. – Aristophanese, Chorus of Clouds A withdrawn, seething red amber spiked with dragon’s blood resin, black pepper, red musk, and red oudh. The descriptions for all of The Great American Eclipse scents have been spot on, and this blend is no exception. All of the reds come on strong; amber, musk and oudh pulsing with a deep, bloody tang. The dragon's blood is a light floral soapy note, balancing out the very present black pepper. This reminds me a LOT of the Deluge of Blood from The Song of Creation, but more bloody and less sweet (which is a great thing, imo). This scent is angry, red, not spicy per say, and absolutely perfect. If I already didn't have 3 bottles of Deluge, I'd be picking up several backups of this (and may anyway)!

These late eclipses in the sun and moon portend no good to us. Though the wisdom of nature can reason it thus and thus, yet nature finds itself scourged by the sequent effects. Love cools, friendship falls off, brothers divide, in cities mutinies, in countries discord, in palaces treason, and the bond cracked twixt son and father. This villain of mine comes under the predictiontheres son against father. The king falls from bias of naturetheres father against child. We have seen the best of our time. Machinations, hollowness, treachery, and all ruinous disorders follow us disquietly to our graves. Find out this villain, Edmund. It shall lose thee nothing. Do it carefully. And the noble and true-hearted Kent banished, his offense honesty! Tis strange, strange. William Shakespeare, King Lear Amber, bergamot, and honeyed saffron blackened by smoked oudh, patchouli, ti leaf, scorched thistle, leather, and yew. freshly applied, i'm getting something leafy and green...perhaps the ti leaf? it seems to be combined with honey, and maybe some bergamot, with something smoky. after a few minutes, the scent warms up with some amber and a little patchouli. the honeyed saffron is gorgeous in this. i don't seem to get any leather in this. it ends up mostly amber and honeyed saffron with hints of greenery during the drydown.

It has been known since antiquity that looking directly at an eclipse can cause serious damage to the eyes. Islamic scholar, Al-Biruni, observed that you could minimize the damage by viewing an eclipse reflected in the surface of still water. In his Naturales Quaestiones, Seneca observed, Whenever we want to watch an eclipse of the Sun we set out basins filled with oil or pitch, because the heavy liquid is not easily disturbed and so preserves the images it receives. Amber swirled in opoponax, black labdanum, and poplar tar. Amber + Opoponax are the major players in this scent It's a rather thick feeling resin fragrance and it's rather sweet on me (not sugar sweet), it last ALLL day. I could see people who are a fan of the amber from Haunted and love opoponax really enjoying this one The labdanum is probably in there, I'm not sure what it's supposed to smell like and when I looked it up it said "animalic" and my skin completely drinks up animalic notes...or I'm anosmic to it. The poplar tar seems to add a density to the scent, even if I don't find it to stand out on it's own. While I could wear this scent on a warmish day, I know it'll shine in all it's glory on those cold/brisk days that are coming to Canada soon enough Other note: This one got me complemented a couple times by my boss, she had to know what it was called because it was so lovely. I didn't feel confidant enough to give her the bpal spiel so I told her "Amber and Opoponax"

and the Sun has perished out of heaven, and an evil mist hovers over all. Homer, the Odyssey An evil mist hovers over all: Tunisian amber, wilted asphodel, myrrh, and smoke. the lab's beautiful asphodel over a base of smooth myrrh. some ambery sweetness, very subtle smoke (leans frankincense and not tobacco). a feminine sibling/lover to orpheus charming animals from last year's unicorns. I love this and will be wearing it on monday for the big event. eta this has had about five days to settle, and currently dries down to a asphodel over frankincense with myrrh/amber swirling in the background.

Nothing is unexpected, nothing is foresworn and Nothing amazes now that father Zeus the Olympian veiled the light to make it night at midday even as sun was shining: so dread fear has overtaken men. From this time on everything that men believe will be doubted: may none of us who see this be surprised when we see forest beasts taking turns in the salted field with dolphins, when the echoing waves of the sea become Dearer to them than the sand, and the dolphins love the wooded glen – Archilochus Red amber and heady red wine, benzoin, ash, and bourbon vanilla. I can smell every note in the description, it's kind of amazing. Wet, this is a GRAPE CHERRY POPSICLE SURPRISE, and initially I was worried that it wouldn't work for me. But (as with other BPAL containing wine/cherry notes) it quickly mellowed into a deep incense-y red wine when drying on my skin. Think old vine Zinfandel, with a *slightly* lighter fruitiness than usual, sipped while a warm spicy incense is burning a little too close for comfort. The ash is surprisingly present, and I can detect a wee hint of bourbon vanilla lurking in the background. This smells exactly how I would expect a carnival fortune teller's tent to smell, and I'll be hanging on to this one for sure!
