Pumpkin Spice Halo-Halo

Recommended Posts

With apologies to my ancestors. Ube halaya and ube ice cream chonked with mango jelly, flan, boiled taro, evaporated milk, sweetened kidney beans, dried coconut, kaong, gulaman, tapioca pearls, and a copious shake of pumpkin spice.

GOODNESS! This is good! :thud:

The the bottle I get the creaminess of the flan and evaporated milk and the richness of the ube.

Once it warms up on the skin, the show *really* begins, with that mango note coming out to play and the dried coconut coming in for a quick "hello". (This coconut is NOT a big star, so the "dried" aspect is apt here- it's a nice supporting character, but definitely no stronger than the creamy notes, for instance.)

The yam notes here are really blowing my mind. They are elevating this from what might otherwise be a scent that would mostly appeal only to foodies and gourmand lovers and transforms it into something else. Beth has been playing around with these earthy-food notes this year (like the *exquisite* use of Red Bean Paste in a peach hair gloss a month ago for D-Con) and these new fragrances are showing that her range just gets more and more complex, interesting and exciting. Here the ube plays with the mango and milk in a way that leaves me just wanting to huff my wrist for EVER. Literally, every time I pull my hand away, I immediately feel loss, and need to sniff again.

A low throw scent, test before slathering because this is a scent that will be for YOU, not for your companions. Not that they won't want to snuggle in closer, but that this is one of those fragrances that feels more intimate, more personal, and you might just want to keep it all for yourself ;)

In all: DEFINITELY worthy of a backup bottle- or two!

This is a very creamy blend, but also very ...earthy? Velvety ribbons of milky jam weave through wobbling mounds of coconut custard. Lumpy dollops of an almost figgy milk jelly jostle jiggingly aside pillowy palm sugar flan. But there is also the starchy nectar of sweet rice, beans boiled in fruit syrup, and the subterranean, geosmic sweetness of mashed tubers. This fragrance has all of those things...plus a tiny spoonful of salty, nutty, browned butter.

I'm not going to be able to analyze this by note like I usually would. I love ube, but I've only had a halo-halo once, and I didn't love it... there was just too much going on in it for me. Yet, I was curious to see how this would translate as a perfume, especially with the addition of pumpkin spice. Let me just say that the starchy, creamy ube and taro notes are on point, and so are the beans and the jellies. The mango jelly is one of the notes I felt was a little jarring when it emerged (and maybe the sugar palm?) because to me, it didn't really go with the other creamy, starchy, earthy notes. And I didn't love the coconut with these notes, which was a main player on me by the end of the day. But I'm still impressed at how Beth nailed the various textures of all of these things.

If you're worried about the pumpkin spice component, don't be. I tend to amp spice and did not get much of it here.

Although this isn't a scent that I could see myself wearing, I think it is very interesting. I really love how all of the textures of these halo-halo ingredients come through. If you are a fan of halo-halo and want to smell like it, here's your chance!
