BPAL Madness!

Recommended Posts

Fear and fascination: blackened vetiver, amber smoke, clove, and oudh.

…It was a sooty-black animal that resembled a monstrous cat. It appeared to me about four or five feet long for it measured fully the length of the hearthrug as it passed over it; and it continued to-ing and fro-ing with the lithe, sinister restlessness of a beast in a cage. I could not cry out, although as you may suppose, I was terrified.

y'all, I am beside myself. this is way too good, like GOOD good. it's probably not legal! luckily laws aren't real and this perfume is, so we can at least all smell like the sexiest vampire versions of ourselves as the horrors of everyday life continue unabated.

like everyone else I was really excited about the Constellation blend for Haute Macabre, but I got my tester and realized I had an idea in my head of a much darker backdrop for the shimmering patterns of stars, so while Constellation was lovely, it was ultimately not for me. but Sinister Restlessness is bringing the darkness my little black heart had hoped for! I will admit that I love me a vetiver+oud pairing and I know they are both notes about which folks have strong opinions, but this particular blend, this deceptively simple list of four notes, is EVERYTHING. it's smoky sweet amber and clove posing seductively on satiny black sheets of pure sex. I'm not even sure I'm allowed to wear this, but I certainly aspire to be this alluring. the vetiver is just ever so slightly masc but the amber is just ever so slightly femme and ultimately I fear it's perfectly inappropriate for all! I would simply faint if I smelled this on someone, anyone. maybe I should print out disclaimers, liability waivers to carry with me when I dare to wear this in public.

This is delicious! A dark clove that dries down into an equally luscious vetiver, with sweet amber smoke threading through it all. Everything about this scent is chewy and rich. The vetiver is somewhat earthy, but not scary. I have trouble with several types of BPAL oud for being too indolic, but this is not one of those. All the good stuff, none of the bad.

Over time I've come to accept that as much as I would like to be someone who wears super dark scents, my comfort zone is actually more of a medium-dark. Sinister Restlessness pushes the darker end of what I find wearable, but it's a really balanced and approachable take on the dark notes within.

Instantly, a sweet, jammy clove with a hint of orange. Very holiday pudding.

I don't typically like holiday food smells as perfume, but this one is growing on me.

I get a pale orange honeyed note. It smells a lot like honeybush tea but I think it's the amber. The clove isn't super sharp. Right now this is dark but the throw isn't very intense. This should age well because of the vetiver and oudh.

If you're looking for an alternative to the disconnected "Covered Bridge" by Solstice Scents, Sinister Relentlessness is a a very good option.

I get a freshly dried burnt wood with traces of smoke and ash, laced with clove. Very autumnal in feeling.
