Guttering Candle

I found this scent to be almost eeriely realistic. Gently sweet beeswax and a hint of smoke at first, and then as it dries the smoke becomes more prominent, as if the candle is continuing to burn out. Plus that ineffable just extinguished candle scent which isn't quite smoke or wax.

 

I feel quite wary of smoke notes and so while I felt curious about this one I didn't initially want to get it. I am so glad my partner did, because wearing it is such a cool experience, and it's amazing to see how the lab is able to capture this kind of fleeting moment. The smoke is definitely there, but it's clearly candle smoke, contained and sweetened by the wax. Much to my surprise, I love this. I hope it gets a lot of appreciation.

This is going to be my first contribution to this board… So, I hope I didn’t click the wrong thing lol. I am so incredibly unfamiliar with this format and all of its buttons. Anyway, I recently received my order of six full-size bottles. All blind buys except for one, and I think this one was my favorite. I can’t wait to wear it! It truly does smell like the perfect and accurate representation of a guttering candle. And what a great word, guttering.

At first this was too similar to my memory of The Light of Men's Lives for me. However, there's a stronger sooty note that I'm really enjoying.

Just gonna throw in my agreement with everyone. This is like Light of Mens Lives slightly spookier sibling. That creamy, glorious beeswax note but just dirtied up a bit with the extinguished wick and waft of distinctive candle smoke. Super wearable and very comfortable tbh. I've been wearing it a lot this holiday season. Pretty solid throw and great longevity! Layers superbly as well ♡

This one starts off soft, but I caught regular whiffs of it for several hours. It hits the nail on the head for me; a little smoke, a little soot, and a pool of wax. I suppose it could be seen as sweet in the way that beeswax is, but this candle is unscented. I had a few friends sniff it for funsies and none of them "got it" (not surprising to me, it's a pretty niche smell), but one of them found it "untrustworthy" and "definitely not something you should eat".

 

I did compare it to Endless Corridors because I'm not sure I need both. The vetiver in Corridors gives it significantly more strength, especially in the opening. The drydowns are pretty similar. The smoke/soot in Guttering Candle is stronger through the entire wear, and it's definitely more "atmospheric" just by virtue of being such a good portrayal of that smell.
