BPAL Madness!

Recommended Posts

When love beckons to you, follow him,

Though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,

Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

And when he speaks to you believe in him,

Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,

So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Tender branches, clinging roots: plum cognac, vetiver caramel, red labdanum, tobacco root, Turkish rose, and nutmeg.

Sniffing the decant, I get the plum cognac, vetiver caramel (in the imp I don't really get the vetiver part, more just caramelized sweetness underneath the plum), rose, and tobacco. Lightly fruity and floral, mellow sweetness, and a bit of dark base notes from the tobacco. While I'm familiar with most of these notes, the combination feels unique, not quite like anything in my collection or memory.

On my skin it is similar, a bit more blended and even more mellowed out. I think I'm getting the vetiver -normally it goes harsh on my skin but I think it is blending nicely with the tobacco root and just adding an earthiness, sort of roughing up the sweeter notes a bit. Sniffing deeply I get hints of the nutmeg with its sweet woodiness. It is sort of resinous, rich and dark. I keep saying sweet but it's not a candy or particularly fruity sweetness. Addicting to sniff, I feel compelled to keep coming back to it.

In The Bottle: I don't pick out any particular notes, but there's a verrrry strong sensation of walking around outside on a wet, chilly autumn day. I have NO objections to this synesthesiac experience!

Wet On Skin: The scent starts to reveal its components a bit, and I'm able to get glimpses of the plum cognac and a slight rind of that vetiver, though not the usual smokiness.

Dry Down: This shows...promise. But with the density of the notes involved, I'm not surprised it's just not there yet. I suspect strongly that when I retest in a month or two I will be in love. For now, it's a nice "like", and will be a delight in autumn.

Editing To Add:
Okay, so it's a number of hours later and while much of the above remains true, I am also now *quite* excited about this scent in the present. It took an unusually long time to really bloom, but the payoff is SO worth it. The Turkish Rose and I think the Labdanum notes are combining to be beautifully reminiscent of OLLA Eve, which is one of my favorite all-time scents. So if that's true for you as well, run -don't walk- to snag some of this beautiful scent!
