phantasmmysteria Report post Posted January 29, 2008 EBISU MAKING LOVE AS TWO OCTOPUSES LOOK ONOakmoss, skin musk, and nectarine. Well, unfortunately this scent was a pretty big disappointment for me. I was hoping for something both a little earthy and sweetened up by the nectarine. Well, the nectarine definitely adds a great deal of sweetness to this blend, but the oakmoss smells almost aquatic rather than adding any sort of earthiness. These two notes fight with one another rather than blending together, which results in an odd combination that's almost nauseating.I might put this away for a bit of aging to see if the scent melds together with time, but right now it's not looking so good with my chemistry. Jilara Report post Posted February 4, 2008 I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was definitely not this scent. However, that said, it was a pleasant surprise, anyway. It's very aquatic, very slithery, calling to mind frogs, octopi, and creatures of water. A slight fruity note, and a musky, almost feral note. It doesn't change at all from initial application to drydown. I think it's R'lyeh it reminds me of, but with a more land-based musky note blending in, that must be Ebisu's presence. It doesn't seem to last very long, though, with a little over an hour of scent before it fades out on me. But I like it!
edenssixthday Report post Posted February 7, 2008 Ebisu Making Love As Two Octopuses Look On - This opens up with a strong nectarine and musk scent. It's very fruity and has a touch of woodiness behind it. Within a matter of minutes, the fruit scent fades almost completely and the oakmoss comes out and it's woodier than oakmoss usually is on my skin. At this point, it starts to become a skin scent - I can't smell it at all unless I'm sniffing my wrist up close. After about 15 minutes on my skin, something in this blend starts turning to an odd plastic scent and by the 30 minutes point, the plastic smell is all that is left and it's incredibly strong - whatever that plastic note is, it sure amps on my skin. After two hours, I can still smell the plastic (and only the plastic) but at least at this point, there's zero throw and it's sticking to my skin and is very faint. I usually like oakmoss, but it's a bit too woody for my taste in this particular blend to even use in a scent locket or as a room fragrance, so I'll be passing this along. hkhm Report post Posted February 12, 2008 bottle: mossy tangerines. not two notes i would ever have figured could smell so fantastic together. wet: incredibly sweet tangerines. the musk and moss make this feel very sexy and the fruit fells playful and tipsy. incredible. dry: this fades only slightly to a sweet, fruity musk. i'm in love. dawndie Report post Posted February 12, 2008 Wet: sweet green On skin: orange and green and orange and green! Half-hour later: sweet garden greenery, like walking through an outdoor nursery full of fruit trees In conclusion: I was unsure of this blend, as I saw the first ingredient of oakmoss and imagined it would end up too dark green and aftershavey on me. How wrong I was! Bright and peppy and beautiful. This was a delight!
alhbooks Report post Posted February 14, 2008 I had high hopes. After all, I love fresh nectarine. sadly, this was bitter on my skin and that never faded. Sigh.
alicia_stardust Report post Posted February 14, 2008 This is a lovely, non-soapy aquatic blend. Something about it is tangy and fresh and green, and very watery. I find skin musk to be very light and sensual and it always has a sort of golden, breathy quality that sits close to my skin. When that combines with the earthy oakmoss, it turns into more of a musky, perfumey fragrance yet it is not cloying to me. It remains breathy and salty and the nectarine adds just the right amount of sweet nectar.
Delirium1009 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 In bottle/imp: This smells like biting into a fresh nectarine while being sprayed with men’s cologne. Immediately on skin: This smells of fresh, juicy, tart nectarines and the unisex scent of oakmoss, which I usually associate with men’s cologne. This is probably the truest nectarine scent I’ve smelled… it’s tart and slightly sweet and just so juicy. The scent itself is clean and fresh with that lovely fruity bite. After a little while: This scent has settled and smoothed out a lot. The tart crispness has disappeared, and has been replaced by a light, fresh unisex fruity scent. It still smells of nectarine and oakmoss, but I’m guessing it’s the skin musk has really come out now and is what is turning this into a blend that sits closer to the skin. But it’s not really a musky blend. Overall Impressions: I really like the fresh, crisp fruitiness of this blend. At first I was delighted by how much it smelled like real nectarine, but as it settled it still stayed rather fruity. The way it hugs the skin when it’s been worn for a little while is very pretty. This is going to be a great warmer weather fragrance for me.
slave1 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 EBISU MAKING LOVE AS TWO OCTOPUSES LOOK ON In Bottle: Earthy peachy nectarine On Skin: This is very pretty… wow. A very soft and close to the skin blend. This to me reminds me of peach fuzz… It’s not really peachy, but the tartness of the nectarine is sweetened by the skin musk so it takes on a peachy quality. For someone who thinks peach scents are too sweet, this is a great alternative. My mom always cut up nectarines and put them on her rice crispies… this totally reminds me of that. The oakmoss is very faint, just slightly earthy and more of a base mote. The skin musk is sweet, soft and velvety. I can’t imagine anyone not liking this scent since it is so faint and non-offensive. It could work on anyone, and give them a very gentle and inviting quality. An absolutely beautiful scent that I’d love to wear often, I just wish it had more throw and wearlength. Light throw and short wearlength on me.
Brianne Report post Posted February 18, 2008 This is more of what I was expecting than Butterflies and Plovers were. A sweet but watery nectarine, backed by an oceany moss smell. It's not too salty or ozoney, it's very soothing and soft. It's a wet, pale green and peach scent. It's close to the skin - this is very lovely and subtle. This will be my Spring scent for sure! AEris Report post Posted February 20, 2008 orange and green and orange and green! haha that's perfect : -D A crisp, fresh, fruity peach scent. It's interesting because it's clean while being peachy, and peach is usually cloying and humind for me. The nectarine dominates, but I can sense the musk and mossy base. It's very interesting, and not exactly bad, but it's a bit giddy for me. (maybe I've just got the winter blues : -P* ) 3.6 out of
sookster Report post Posted February 23, 2008 straight sniff from bottle is earthy musk... once applied this is mostly just musk and oakmoss...the slightest hint of nectarine... rather odd; another bottle that needs to be aged to get the full experience.... fairnymph Report post Posted February 28, 2008 In the bottle: Herbs and fresh, juicy nectarine, a hint oakmoss. Clean and aquatic. Wet: Very similar, but fainter. Lighter on the nectarine, sadly. This is a slightly green nectarine, not a fully ripe one. Overall, quite a green-herbal scent. Sadly low throw. Slow to dry. Dry: Okay this one takes ages to dry - wow. It's not morphing much, though a hint of faint musk has emerged. The oakmoss is quite light. Summary: The oakmoss emerged completely, the nectarine returned, and the musk is very light and natural. The throw stays very low, sadly, but the lasting power is excellent, so if I slather properly, all should be well. I adore all these notes so much...and it's a slatherer, so should I get 2 or 3 bottles? Egads!
siddal Report post Posted February 29, 2008 I love this! so far it is my fave of the Shungas. A creamy soft nectarine skin musk. It really reminds me of something I have smelled before but I can't place it. Anyway, it's a welcome surprise because even though I love the tart citrus of Butterflies and Plovers, the patchouli, my arch-enemy, destroys that one for me. I'm definitely getting a bottle of this one!
UploadedLobster Report post Posted March 3, 2008 A grassy and herbal nectarine. It's an underripe nectarine, though, still very tart. And there's a faint salty aquatic flavor underneath everything. It's strikingly bright and fresh. An extremely clean scent. Not sexy as such, but bracing and vigorous. This is the scent of Ebisu sitting up out of a tangle of crushed foliage and chucking some green fruit at those pervy octopus voyeurs. Octopus voyeurs...in little hats. Fades kinda quickly tho'. Lobster Rating better than: omg little hats
alterosen Report post Posted March 7, 2008 I was surprised by the green aquatic-ness of this wet. I was expecting something along the lines of Fae because of the notes but they're really not similar at all. I'm not sure if it's my cup of tea but my 4 year old son wanted to wear it, so there's some support for this one in the household I'll have to revisit it later. PurringPulsar Report post Posted March 7, 2008 Ebisu Making Love as Two Octopuses Look On In the imp: really sharp nectarine! Wet on skin: very sharp nectarine, not a sweet nectarine scent. Also, a hint of moss. Dry on skin: whoa, this nectarine bites! I was hoping for a sweet peachy scent but this is very tangy, tart, dry nectarine, too sharp for me…it’s almost acidic. It’s got a really high-pitched feel to it, a little too shrill. It reminds me slightly of Angeronalia’s nectarine but I much preferred it in there, tempered by the other notes in that scent. In here, I barely even smell the musk, and the moss is very quiet as well. After a while: still the same, that shrill nectarine note which smells a little perfumey now. I smell a hint of the powdery skin musk or moss, but it’s not changed much from before. Maybe it’s a bit drier, lacking the juicy scent that came before, and it’s a bit fuzzier (like a peach). The scent becomes very perfumey at drydown. It’s now a skin musk-nectarine scent but there’s no sweetness to it at all, which, I think, is what this scent needs. It’s much too strident and shrill on me. Verdict: I thought I liked peach and nectarine notes, but this one has the sharpest peach scent I’ve ever smelt, in BPAL at least. It’s all nectarine, all the time, and it’s such a tart, sour note, almost like an unripe peach, no sweetness here whatsoever. It’s so sharp it almost shrieks, it is a piercing note. And it also has a perfumey tone to it which I don’t like. I get hardly any moss or musk here. this scent, despite promises of octo-porn, was a disappointment on me…at least Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife is a keeper! Emoticon rating: Is it a keeper? No. If you like this, try: Angeronalia, Tamamo No Mae, Butterflies and Plovers, Croquet, Silence
azhriaz Report post Posted March 8, 2008 I am madly in love with this scent. It smells like a fresh nectarine and the skin musk and oakmoss create the perfect undertone. I wouldn't classify it as aquatic because that description makes me think of ozone and cologne, but it does have a watery element. Loses a bit of the magic on drydown (the nectarine becomes more perfumey than fruity)... I think I will have to get a bottle so I can slather this.
Hayet Report post Posted March 10, 2008 This is really, really pretty- mostly nectarine on me. It reminds me a lot of Tamomo no mae, with that faint hint of skin musk and fruit that doesn't dominate the blend. I don't think this one is distinguishing itself from Tamamo, however. Which is a shame, because I'd love to wear this scent simply for the octopus in the bowler hat. HEHEHE!
meeow712 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Oh I'm in love. On me, it's a creamy skin musk with nectarine undertones. I'm not getting any moss, but I'm totally fine with that. It has a strong throw and VERY long wear.
steelxrose Report post Posted March 11, 2008 (edited) Ebisu Making Love As Two Octopuses Look On was a real surprise for me. This one didn't even register on my "hey, I'd like to try it" list, except that I got all the Novel Ideas scents for no particular reason. After first sniff: instant love. I adore nectarines, and that is exactly what I get from it. For the first few hours after applying, I get the nectarines as well. Only after a few hours does it fade to musk, which I have no problem with at all either. Bottle worthy? I think so! carbide Report post Posted March 14, 2008 This is the first of the Novel Ideas I've tried, and it was a kind frimp with some decants. Way out of my usual scent preferences - aquatics don't work and I amp sweetness too much for fruity - so I was delighted to try it but wasn't expecting a success. In in the imp: Predominantly nectarine with something aquatic. Sweet, but not cloying. On skin: Cloying! Syrupy nectarine, thick and sticky. Stronger by the minute, too. I imagine the throw is significant but I'm afraid I had to wash it off before I got to see if other people picked up on it - I have a bias against sweetness that makes it easy to pick out. Fun to try, but I'll pass on the decant!
blu° Report post Posted March 14, 2008 (edited) Ebisu is much more green to my nose and on my skin than I had expected. The nectarine is none of the fully ripe dripping juicy sweet orange nectarines that come from Italy around August to September. Maybe it is a white nectarine, or it's just not ripe. The fruitiness in Ebisu reminds me of Tweedledum which I think has a similar fruity green feeling. The oakmoss, which usually is a big promoter of throw on me, seems to be held back by what I guess is the skin musk. I can't really make out the skin musk, but the whole scent sticks really close to the spot where I put the oil. I, too, have the impression that the ingredients are fighting against and surpressing each other. The nectarine doesn't fully develop before it's toned down immensely by the skin musk, the oakmoss is held back, too. And the skin musk itself looses some of the roundness I love about it by the tart and the mossy of the other two. I keep sniffing the spot where I put it, and sometimes I get a light whiff of something deliciously fruity, but I really have to search for it and it's embedded in a rather weird mishmash of competing notes. So, I think Ebisu doesn't really work for me. I'm a bit sad as it sounded so interesting. I love to eat nectarines, and I usually love skin musk and like oakmoss depending on the dosage. forspecial_plate Report post Posted March 15, 2008 This scent is kind of shifty for me.....not in a bad way. When I first tried it, I thought it was the other octopus scent....because I swore it smelled minty. Not sure where the hint of mint was coming from. But this is an attractive scent. To be honest, it reminds me of shampoo, but a really nice, high quality shampoo. It's somewhat similar to 'Sunrise With Sea Monster', which I also like a lot. Somewhat aquatic. I personally don't get a strong fruity vibe from the apricot, it's just a sweet hint. Come to think of it, none of the notes really stand out, it's more of a nice blend of notes. I like it! Little Bird Report post Posted March 15, 2008 All of the Novel Ideas are very light and subtle on my skin, not having much throw at all. And I have trouble pulling off a lot of the Asian themed blends, but Ebisu is actually rather nice on me. It's my definite favorite of the Novel Ideas. Ebisu isn't at all what I was expecting from the three listed notes. Nectarine is usually sharp and citrussy, but the fruitiness in this is watery, soft, and sweet. I agree with others who have mentioned that the fruitiness is almost peach-like. There's nothing really earthy or green or mossy about this on me either. I really like bpal's skin musk in a lot of blends, and the musk here is like clean, lightly powdered skin. Very sexy, I think. That's what Ebisu smells like on me... clean skin and a hint of sweet fruitiness. I really like this. It's interesting in that it manages to smell so clean and sensual on me at the same time. I might even upgrade my decant to a full bottle.
