THREE JACKS
at first: ooo...i don't think i like this. i picked it because, well, i'm going to las vegas in march. that isn't really a good reason to pick a perfume, is it? it smells a bit mannish. i hope it smells better on.
on: what IS that? there's something i really don't like about it. it smells like...a garage. you know, motor oil, smoke. it's a bit smoky, which i actually like. it kind of smells like vegas: slick, but dirty underneath. has a bit of a sweet kick to it. an added thought: this is what i'd imagine a really complex perfume would smell like after staying up all night in vegas gambling and drinking.
1 hour later: it was starting to give me a headache, but it seems to have aired out. it's sweet, but in a manly way. smells like a sweet men's cologne. definitely another one i have to let settle before wearing it out.
3 hours later: it's starting to grow on me. now, it's much softer. it's still masculine and sweet, but there's a bit of spicyness or mintyness underneath. i'm liking it.
overall: i'm definitely taking this to vegas with me. it won't be an everyday kind of scent.
update: this stuff works! i won $1000 at one time in vegas. this is definitely my gambling perfume!

Hehe, I kinda liked the smell of it, its Almondy, and woodsy, though I have yet to try it on. (I'm saving for my next trip to the blackjack table!) But I seriously can't wait to wear it . I'll sniff it some more when I get home. But I remember an almondy smell!

It does have that nutty smoky fire smell, can't place exactly what it is, maybe some myrrh or sandlawood too? I like it as I am wearing it right now... I'll let you know if I win the lotto!

This was the worst experience I have had with a BPAL...wet it was vanilla cake, not too terrible a thing except that it was cloyingly sweet with something bitter lurking in the background--not nice bitter like campari, but nasty bitter like earwax. Sorry if that was too gross an image! After awhile this throat-burning smoky smell established itself firmly behind the too-sweet cake. I tried to go a whole day, but I wound up scrubbing it off as much as I could and gagging when I did catch a whiff!

 

Here's the thing, though: I really slathered it on, because it was the last BPAL I tried in my first shipment, which was all light scents that needed a liberal hand. I think maybe, under very specific circumstances and applied correctly, that this scent might work for me. If I wore a white shirt with slightly poofy sleeves, my black brocade vest and my black silk twill trousers, with my hair in a loose bun on top of my head, smoked a Swisher Sweet and drank a scotch on the rocks or a snifter of cognac, and played poker with just a tiny dab of Three Jacks between my breasts, I think we might get along just fine. I don't do that sort of thing often, though, so until I have such an opportunity Three Jacks will stay nestled in the back of my box of imps.

In the bottle- Almond-like, Cedar like, and smokey.

 

On my husband- A bit like Tombstone on me, It has a deep deadwoods smell. Still a bit smokey- campfire smoke. Just a smidge of vanilla or something sweet. Not as much as Tombstone but a masculine counterpart to it. I like this on him.

I'd been wanting to play a game of cards, wearing this oil, before I wrote the review. Sadly, it seems that my friends who I can occasionally talk into playing poker with me aren't up for being beaten again (for some reason I have *really* good luck/strategy with poker, already), and I haven't been able to play a collectible card game since I got this stuff. Which is weird.

 

Initial Impression

 

Vetiver and cedarwood. It's got this woody, earthy smell, with a tinge of something sweet underneath.

 

Wearing It

 

Definitely vetiver. My skin really likes to bring that note out. What else is in here? Maybe, myrhh? It reminds me a bit of velvet and a bit of ...dana o'shee? Maybe there's almonds in here. I dunno, though. It's sweet, like vanilla or chocolate or almonds. Either way, though, it hasn't turned to baby powder on me, so that's a good sign. Overall, it's very woody and smoky. I think I'll have to get my boyfriend to wear this, since it smells very good and he needs more luck when he plays cards. On the other hand, I may keep it since I do like the way it smells....

 

Also -- I'm going to be taking a *very* difficult grammatical english test today, and I decided to wear this to the test, layered with Voodoo. (which is a very nice smelling combo.) Hopefully it will grant me some luck while taking this test, even though it isn't card related... I'll update later with results of the test, and whether this works out with some later card games.

Three Jacks was my scent of the day.

 

Kind of sad, I based the wanting to obtain this scent on the fact I really like the song "The Jack" by AC/DC.

 

Granted, I don't play cards very oftin, but who knows... maybe I'll pick up a winning lottery ticket.

 

Onto the scent -

 

In the bottle and wet, it sort of has a slight bit of that punky scent I detected in Wolfsbane, but with a sweet undertone.

 

Murky, yet sweet. Some sort of swirling darkness to glitz and glam.

 

Wearing it I found Three Jacks was sort of heavier than I usually wear. The strong scent stayed, but decided to hide beneath a sweeter vanillaish (maybe) overtone. Nothing too sweet, the sharp tone was a constant reminder to look beneath the glitzy shine and deeper into the truth and corruption hideing nearby.

 

I could see myself running off to Vegas to win with this scent!

 

I also find AC/DC "The Jack" quite a good lyrical companion to this scent. I'm glad I have it onhand when I need some luck.

In bottle: Musky and...musty. It reminds me of walking into a house that's been abandoned for years and years. Everything's still there, pristine and as the owner left it, but because nature has begun to take the place back there are dry leaves on the floor, mold crawling up the walls, water damage everywhere, and creaking floors and stairs. Maybe some cinnamon?

 

On me: Nutty. It reminds me of those jars of mixed nuts. It's also very smoky. It's like I'm in the house I just described, and in the center of the room some older men are playing cards with cigars hanging from their lips and an ancient ashtray with a mountain of ash sitting in the middle of the table. I get very heavy whiffs of some sort of wood, one of the ones I pick up in Cathedral. Sandalwood o perhaps cedar? While I like this scent - it is strangely comforting - I don't know that I could wear it, even to Vegas to test its gambling charms.

Bottle (Imp): Incensy.

 

Just On: Quite incensy and perhaps woody.

 

An hour or two later: Vetiver!

 

Around 6 hours: Vetiver incense.

 

12 hours: It's gone bye bye.

 

Overall: I like it more than I thought I would.

 

After reading other reviews: I was rather surprised at how this wore on me, vetiver and I don't always get along.

It's an orangey colored blend.

It's foody, and sweet, then at about 3 seconds this smokey and camphor like smell comes out as if to say "hehe". This is a playful little bugger too. I see thick black curtain of smoke as if it's hiding something, then in the middle a bright orange little gleaming jewel in the middle. I think I smell civet as well maybe?

 

30 minutes

The leather is primary now with the smoke in the middle and the spilt whiskey smell in the background.

Summary

It does kind of remind me of smokey old dance halls with the smell of leather, spilt whiskey and men playing cards with guns hidden under the table.

Not my thing to wear at all but it's certainly evocative, bravo on that count.

In the bottle I smell tobacco.

 

Wet, it smells foodier. Maybe a little sweeter, no tobacco.

 

Drydown - foody gone. Still slighty sweet - but now sweet like pipe tobacco. A little smoky.

 

Not sure about this one yet. Maybe I'll be more sure after a trip to atlantic city? or Vegas? Or...?

 

I only have an imp, but I'll hang on to it for now.

I almost wonder if my wee half-imp decant of this has gone bad or something. It has a strangely sour bitterness to it. Smoky almond, smoky cedar, perhaps some vetiver, and a generally unpleasant sour note. In the drydown it takes on a musty quality that makes me think of damp, moldy wood.

 

This is strong and has a lot of throw... but I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing in this case. The smell is making me a bit nauseous. The sweet almond mixed with the heavy earthiness of the vetiver and the charred woods note is not working for me at all.

 

I won't be scrambling to find more of this any time soon, lol.

Three Jacks - Mmm...imagine the sweet herbal quality of TAL Perpetuum Bonum combined with the wooden notes of Anne Bonny combined with the spiciness of Port Royale, and there you have exactly what Three Jacks smells like. It's highly herbal, as many of the Voodoo Blends are. The scent has the perfect amount of throw, but is not something I'd personally choose to wear as a personal fragrance -- it's too herbal for me. I can't really comment on its use as a gambling aid, but my husband is talking about going to Vegas with a buddy of his, and you'd better believe that before he goes, I'll be anounting all the cash in his wallet with Three Jacks (and making sure I surreptitiously remove his credit card before he hits the casinos -- ha ha!). If he indeed does go gambling and I do a little ritual with Three Jacks beforehand, I'll definitely return with an update as to its intended usage.

on me this smells a lot like Tombstone without the sassafras - all rich cedar and warm vanilla. I think it's wonderful, an opinion in which I seem to be a minority. I don't gamble so I won't be able to test if its voodoo properties work. I'll try to remember to put some on the next time I play cribbage with the boyfriend, maybe.

This one smells like vetiver and woods. It's a really nice, almost powdery vetiver, not that dark dank kind. It's the smokey kind of vetiver that I like. I'm pretty sure that the wood in it is cedar, because the scent reminds me of Tombstone. It really warms up after it's been on the skin for a few minutes and becomes almost creamy and sweet. I like it. I wish it were still around -- I'd probably buy a bottle of it, and I'm generally not usually all that keen on the scents of the Voodoo Blends. This was a good one.

This smells like swarthy, strong vetiver. Behind that there are woods, dry smoke, oil, and LOTS of patchouli. This isn't a wearable scent for me, but then this is a Voodoo blend so that takes care of that. I should keep this around until the next time I'm in Vegas.

Three Jacks on me wet is delicious. It's got a strong apple/apple blossom note to it, and it kinda makes me think of Lamb's Wool, minus the milk.

 

As it dries however, there's an almost 'motor oil' tinge to it.

 

Despite it all, the only offputting thing I find about this blend is its rarity.

Yes, I'm getting lots of vetiver here, with woods and patchouli and smoke. This is actually sweetening considerably on my skin as it dries, and it is getting a little hazier in feel. This started out pretty aggressive, but it smoothes out as it dries, so it's definitely worth keeping on to see how it morphs. I like this. It's tending towards the masculine for me, but it's still wearable.
