Deep South, Southern belles, Gone with the Wind...

I would just like to add two more recs to the list: Eos and Twilight (but Eos especially). The South (to me) always smells like blooming honeysuckle, which is probably why both of these immediately sprang to mind.

 

Eos: The Rising Sun. She is Ostara, Easter, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of fertility and the dawn. She is a protector and friend to all children. Her scent is that of softly glowing skin, jasmine, buttercup and honeysuckle.

 

Okay, so no gardenia (and I'm not sure how you feel about jasmine, but it's not the dominant flower for me. If you're looking for eternally youthful perfume, you can't get much better than this.

 

Twilight: An enigmatic, otherworldly scent, brimming with power and mystery. Lavender and jasmine, with a touch of glowing honeysuckle.

 

Again with the jasmine, but the three flowers balance each other very nicely.

 

If you're looking to layer some gardenia with your Antique Lace, I might suggest Sacred Whore of Babylon -- it's very heavy on the gardenia.

I suppose it doesn't have to be Gardenia. It just seems so southen to me. Magnolia, Jasmine, Tea Olive, Lavendar and Honeysuckle would be good too.

I'm fairly new to the world of BPAL myself, but this is such a beautiful scent I just couldn't resist posting it for you. (I'm also a huge Gone With the Wind fan ) The scent is almost glowing, its all honey and floral with a touch of musk. Very sweet and lovely, but not overpowering. I can't imagine Scarlett wearing this, its not powerful enough, but its still very alluring! hahaha

Okay, so I am learning to layer scents. it is hard. I feel like Carrie on Sex and the City looking at my bottles "I love you all equally, but I really REALLY love you (insert latest sniffs name)" so it is hard for me to layer. But I have decided that Antique lace will serve as the base to my Charlestonesque scent. But I am looking for a floral. Pele is on the right corse, but it is lacking something....

Shadow Witch Orchid

Pele (on the fence about)

MonsterBait Bigger Critters (smelled like popcorn on me)

Hell's Belle

have you tried Hi'iaka or Ether yet? Those are two I always recommend to people who are loving Pele!

 

And a lot of Pele fans also end up loving Xiuhtecuhtli.

Well, Pele to me is all muguet and tropical blooms.

 

I got a lot of muguet from Lady of Shallot (Bold gardenia, crystalline musk, muguet, water blossoms, clear, slightly tart aquatic notes and a crush of white ginger).

 

And there's a similar 'blooms' note in Bayou (Spanish moss, evergreen and cypress with watery blue-green notes and an eddy of hothouse flowers and swamp blooms).

 

So either of those might work, depending on which aspect of Pele it was that you liked.

I recently tried New Orleans, and while I loved how it captured the humidness and decay of my favorite city, I have learned that my skin cannot tolerate honeysuckle. I like how it smells on the vine, and I like eating them, ha, but on my skin, it is a definite nope. Further, jasmine can be iffy, depending on what it is in combination with. Anyone got any recommendations for American Southern scents that avoid those two florals? I know it just seems egregious, but my skin doesn't like them!

Try Bayou! (A lazy, warm deep green scent with a thick aquatic undertone: Spanish moss, evergreen and cypress with watery blue-green notes and an eddy of hothouse flowers and swamp blooms.)

I can't pick out any specific florals in it, and although it is "aquatic" - it doesn't have that cologne smell that aquatics usually have (on my skin, at least). It smells of summers in the South to me.

Ziggystardust, how is the rum in jazz funeral? My skin is iffy about rum. Grog was awful on me, but Perversion was very good on me, and the rum in Santa Domingo didn't entirely put me off, but I do need to test it more.

I second Hell's Belle! Its definitely got that southern floral thing going on without the scream of Jasmine thats present in so many other scents. I think you should give it a try! Its pretty & sexy at the same time

And I totally dig Lavender. My second wedding (yes, this is lucky no. 3) I carried a bunch of lavender. Instead of rice, they threw lavender heads. Made the whole backyard smell like lavender for three months!

I didn't know that because in Louisiana we always refer to it as "sweet olive" and I've also learned its other name is "tea olive". It's pretty much my favorite scent in the universe!

I'm from East Texas, and grew up with a magnolia tree in my front yard, as well as a mimosa tree, and honeysuckle, and some scents that remind me of sitting on the front porch at home in a humid Southern night:

 

Lolita - It's a blast of citrus at first, but then the honeysuckle takes over, and really, really, really reminds me of southern nights with honeysuckle.

 

Give Me Thy Breath, My Sister -- there's no honeysuckle or magnolia listed in the notes, but I swear that that's what I get from this oil! Or mimosa blossoms, maybe. And I love it, even though it makes me a little homesick.

Y'all, I think I found my BPAL Southern Belle scent, it's the Bride from this year's Lupers. I am cross-posting my review because this is what I thought of when I tested it:

 

"Now, this is the Southern Belle scent I have been needing. Many of them are too heady for me (and too literally humid), but this is a non-sultry Southern Belle - the kind who makes chiffon pies and brings them to the church fundraiser. She prefers pearls to diamonds, and always makes sure her underwear matches her outfit, you know in case of car wreck or other such "accident."

Curious, is Old New Orleans different from New Orleans? Also, has anyone tried New Orleans v4? There aren't many reviews on it. I want them all!
