tarotgirl99 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 (edited) In the bottle: This smells a lot like the released version of Underbed, but more heavily spiced. Not sure if it's cinnamon, cardamom, or clove (or all three), but it's red hot under that bed. Wet: This is a lot sharper and less sweet than the original. There's a definite edge and it's not nearly as chocolate-y, hazelnutty. There's also no buttery beginning. Dry: This has amazing throw and wear-length. As the hours pass, it smells more and more like the original on drydown. I like this version a lot, but the edge goes to the original. Champagne Report post Posted July 31, 2009 This version is Underbed without cocoa and the cassia of doom as dominant note that lightly spoiled my pleasure. This is cremy vanilla on the skin, followed by spices, maybe nutmeg and clove, and slowly sweetening into a foody drydown heaven. Every time I move I catch whiffs so good and comforting! Maybe someone could find this blend too mellow but for me it`s pure bliss
SurrealReality Report post Posted August 2, 2009 In the Decant: vanilla, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, & a hint of clove Wet on Skin: the spices become stronger, while the vanilla & butter fade a little. Also, there's a slight hint of something similar to spearamint Dry: cinnamon (sweeter), nutmeg, sugar, vanilla, butter (weaker), cake, & perhaps a slight hint of something spearamint-y, but it's barely noticeable. About 1/2 hour in, there's less nutmeg, and absolutey no spearamint After about 1 hour this scent changes dramatically on my skin. It becomes maple syrup, vanilla, and cake, with just a hint of butter and spice (cinnamon & nutmeg) The beginning is a little too spicy for me, but I LOVE the maple syrup drydown. It takes so long to get to that point though! I'm not sure it's worth the time and expense of hunting down a 5ml. I never use decants (except to test), so I may even swap my little vial away...... beachbabealways Report post Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) The original Underbed is one of my all time favorite bpal's so I really wanted to try this. No coconut (one of my favorite notes) and I don't pick up on any cocoa. Ok after wearing this the other day I have finally figured out what this smells like .... Snickerdoodle Cookies!! Suu4LC Report post Posted August 5, 2009 Mmmm...I have never sniffed the original so I cannot compare, but I am definitely digging this in the bottle. Rich cocoa-y cinnamon/cassia over white fluffy coconutty angel cake! Yum! On my skin, the cinnamon is VERY strong and fiery, over a dusty cocoa-y dry coconut cake. You know, one of the other reviewers got a spearminty kind of scent from this, and I kinda of get it this too.. On full drydown, there definitely is something dusty about this blend, which i'm not sure how I feel about...it ends up kind of feeling like dry, dusty coffee cake actually...like the crumbly part of the coffee cake, with the cinnamon and vanilla without the moistness or butteriness of the cakey part. Hmm...interesting. Not sure I love it-I wish I had the original to compare to!
angelicruin Report post Posted August 8, 2009 When I first sniffed the bottle, it seemed pretty much the same as the released version of Underbed. However, once on the skin, there are subtle differences. The released version is definitely more "cake-y" than the prototype. Wet on my skin, this is still a very foody scent with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and butter. I do get a bit of cocoa, but not nearly what is in the released version. I agree with a previous reviewer that this does smell a lot like the released version once fully dry. :love!:
zankoku_zen Report post Posted October 8, 2009 Actually, for me, there is one big difference between the released version and this one. For one, I don't think there's coconut in this blend, because I amp up coconut like no one's business and it wasn't present here. At all. Definitely strong vanilla cake, hint of chocolate (I don't think there's cassis on this). It almost veers into plastic territory, but not quite. Ends up smelling like delectable vanilla with a hint of cocoa. YUM!
papermaker Report post Posted April 8, 2010 This is wayyy more spicy to my nose both in the bottle and wet on my skin. I think it must be both cassia and cinnamon, because it is that hot red kind. Dry however it is delightful. There is a subtle cocoa note, but not as chocolatey as the released blend. This also isn't as sweet. While the cinnamon and cassia calm down, the released blend is much cakier and sweeter to my nose. Don't get me wrong, I still love this.
pinkgyrl Report post Posted April 26, 2010 (edited) Whoa - even though I have trouble sniffing things now (hehe...err...not in that way) - this one is all in your face cinnamon! It actually felt like it burned my nose a little when I first sniffied too close to where I had tested it. As opposed to the original Underbed which is a buttery foody type of scent warmed with spices, this is less foody to me - a "dryer" and more subtle blend of vanilla and very strong spices. I do not get the coconutty vibe from this one either, so if that killed the original for you - this one may be a winner. It's still nice, but the released version wins hands-down Edited April 26, 2010 by GirlinDenial
samarablackcat Report post Posted May 22, 2010 OK, I am not a foodie at all, so here goes... I could almost swear there is caramel in this, as in the imp I get ewww. But It appears I am wrong. Sugar and cinnamon, not strong as in get it off me now, but more like making cinnamon sugar for your toast, sprinkled on top of a lot of butter (real butter, not margarine). The smell of these baking in the oven, over a coffee cake's crumbled topping. Not scary at all , hiding under the bed, well, except for all those calories . I still don't want to smell like food, but I am glad I tried this. Not anywhere near as fatal as I thought, lol. But I do want to go bake a coffe cake! Venneh Report post Posted May 29, 2010 (edited) In the decant, I'm getting cake batter, sugar, and cinnamon, almost like a coffee cake. On my skin, it's mostly cinnamon sugar, with a bit of the coffee cake underneath; we'll see how this goes. Becomes more cake battery-sugary with a hint of cinnamon underneath. Definitely getting a second test. Edited May 29, 2010 by Venneh
savage_rose Report post Posted June 7, 2010 Coffee cake! Yum! Caramel-sugared nuttiness, almost cinnamon-y but not quite. Delicious!
myth Report post Posted July 6, 2010 From the vial I thought this smelled more like buttery cake than the released version, but once it hits my skin it gets that dry characteristic that I get from the original, and smells pretty similar to it on me. I actually think I prefer the release, because there's something just a bit off about this one, it's harsher somehow, and has some jangly edges that I don't find in the release. Little Bird Report post Posted July 23, 2010 I like the released version of this a lot more than the prototype. The released version is more complex on my skin and I get a definite cake & cocoa smell from it. The prototype is pretty much all spices on my skin, like cinnamon, sugar, and more cinnamon. It makes me smell like red hots candies, which I don't really enjoy.
DangerInRed Report post Posted September 7, 2010 This is a lot spicier than the original. To my nose, this is strong cinnamon/nutmeg/clove spicy cocoa cookies. I may be imagining hints of coconut too, but I think they're in there, just buried underneath. Despite the spiciness, did not irritate my skin!
Penance Report post Posted December 10, 2010 (edited) Origin: Decant from dangerinred. Preconceived notions: I've tried the released version of MB: Underbed and thought it was nice enough but not amazing. Closet stole the show there. Underbed just doesn't wow me. But when I saw it mentioned that the proto version smells like coffee cake (or snickerdoodles), I had to have it. Even when I'd never get within 10 feet of a foody scent, I loved the smell of a very select few foody smells and coffee cake was one of them. God, I love the smell of it...it's making me hungry just thinking about it... Anyway, back to what I was saying. If Underbed v1 really does smell like coffee cake, it'll be a show stopper, I'm sure of it. Snickerdoodles are good, too, but I could take them or leave them when it comes to smelling like them. And I know, there's not a lot of difference between the two, but to me it makes all the difference in the world. Strange as that is. First sniff: Coffee cake! The kind with lots of cinnamon brown sugar crumbly topping on it. Which is the only kind of coffee cake I like. This smells soooo good. It's similar in some ways to Bedbug, but where Bedbug is more of a cookie scent, MB: Underbed is clearly a dense coffee cake/pastry scent to my nose. Plus, Bedbug has a bit of a citrusy zing to it from the ginger that's lacking here. I don't remember the released version of Underbed smelling anything like this, so it would seem that there were some significant changes between v1 and the release. I could be wrong, though, because the last time I tried it was around the time they came out and that was years ago. Wet on skin: I get a big blast of cinnamon and other baking spices as soon as this hits my skin and it starts smelling more like snickerdoodles. It's a very spicy scent when it's wet on my skin. In fact, it's almost all spice, with just a little (vanilla) cake or cookie in the background (it's hard to say, considering the fact that the spices are doing everything in their power to completely overwhelm it). I still like it at this point, but I'm hoping that the coffee cake scent comes back. Dry down: And...it's back! This smells like a combination of those little cinnamon crumb cakes that you get in vending machines combined with cinnamon struesel coffee cake. In fact, it makes me think that Aunt Jemima and Little Debbie somehow managed to get together and have a (delicious, delicious) baby in spite of their both being female (and inanimate and therefore unable to bear cinnamon-scented children, at least not without the miracles of modern science and/or a new, and probably pretty strange, ad campaign). It's just a little buttery, nice and spicy cinnamony sugary and cakey, all at the same time. And it smells awesome. The bottom line: I don't wear foody scents every day. Not even close. But when I do feel like wearing one, this is the kind of foody scent that I want to wear. Anything that makes me want to eat my own arm wins my foody stamp of approval. Now if this weren't so hard to track down, I'd be in self-cannibalism-inducing foody scent heaven. ETA: I don't get any cocoa at all from this, so I'm not sure if it's just my nose or a skin chemistry thing. Pure coffee cake, baby, no chocolate in sight! Gold Dust Kitten Report post Posted April 23, 2011 The Underbed proto really does smell like moist, crumbly coffee cake! It's heavy on butter instead of coconut, beautifully spiced but not as heavy on the cassia, and no cocoa at all...maybe white chocolate. There is a fleeting mintiness as well. I prefer the released version with cocoa and coconut, but this is still yummy.
saralaughs Report post Posted May 24, 2011 This is the first Bpal oil to ever give me a reaction. My skin, where applied, welled and turned red. It didn't hurt but it was weird to see. Anyway... Very much a coffee cake with crumble on top. But like a dry coffee cake that is on the discount rack at the grocery store because it is expiring within the next day. Very dry and spicy, I think cinnamon was a strong component in this one. Buttery as well.
cfrancesca Report post Posted July 2, 2011 This is really rich and strong. I get cassia, dark rich cocoa, buttery cake, plus something that smells burned, it could be a dark coffee note and caramel or brown sugar, I keep getting hints of blueberry too. This is a heavy, cloying, bitter mess on my skin.
neverything Report post Posted November 20, 2011 in bottle: Definitely foody. I'm getting primarily nuts and mint. A very "holiday" feeling. Average throw. wet: Mint comes out on top, with the nutty smell underneath. Both are quickly eclipsed by cinnamon. After a few minutes, a buttery, doughy smell can be detected under the cinnamon. Like snickerdoodle cookies, but really amping the cinnamon. Average throw, or slightly less. drydown: Continues to smell like snickerdoodles, coming more into balance as the cinnamon wears off a bit. Also getting a bit of cinnamon doughnuts and cinnamon rolls. Once the cinnamon disappears completely, what's left is similar to Midway. Average throw. verdict: A quite nice foody scent, if you're in the mood for cinnamon. Not a MUST-have, but would definitely like more.
gelfling Report post Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) Testing a bottle from Etsy. This. is. so. good. In the Bottle: A strong swirl of foody notes all fighting for attention - chocolate! coffee! vanilla! cinnamon! something nutty! something creamy! and is that coconut? Wet: All the notes meld and suddenly it smells exactly like walking into a really good Italian bakery: cinnamon-dusted cappuccino and chocolate-dipped cannoli. Amazing! (Close to the skin, the cinnamon is strongest and I get a hint of the Red Hots/Big Red gum others have mentioned.) Drydown: The scent continues to settle into a general spicy vanilla baked good. Very good, but I miss the initial creaminess. I love this a lot. Such a cozy, yummy scent! Edited January 17, 2014 by gelfling
porcelina Report post Posted September 3, 2014 mmmmmmm this smells sooo yummy. i have never gotten to try the released version of underbed, but v1 is delicious. i smell like cinnamon sugar cocoa-dusted cookies, fresh out of the oven. this works really well for me because the spices/sweetness/cocoa are there, giving the impression of "cookies," but it's not buttery or overtly foodie. just slightly toasted sugary spices and cocoa powder. it's so cozy and delicious. brilliantcat Report post Posted October 24, 2014 I haven't had the good fortune to try the released version so when I saw the proto on Etsy I grabbed it unsniffed. In the bottle, it's dry cocoa with spices (nutmeg or allspice?) and the cinnamon-y whiff of the cassia. It's very similar when first applied and I don't think foodie so much as gourmand. It doesn't have the gooey richness I associate with the foodier blends. But I take my foodiness straight up or in gourmand form, I don't discriminate! The cassia picks up steam and takes over a bit, though I can tell there are other spices in there, cardamom I think because I am reminded of masala chai. On the drydown, the vanilla and coconut start to peek through and it becomes a truly gorgeous blend. It feels cozy, like a giant cable-knit throw blanket that you've wrapped around your shoulders while you have hot chocolate with masala spices and read a beloved novel. I will definitely be on the lookout for the released version now to compare!
vanilla323 Report post Posted May 6, 2015 I've never smelled the released version. But this one is all cinnamon and cardamom and some buttery goodness thrown in too! It's actually very balanced between the three and very strong. Which I love and appreciate. It definitely had good throw and does last quite a while I my skin! Very foodie and yummy!
