I don't think it was available this year, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to find a decant from past years. Edited January 11, 2023 by VetchVesper Share this post Link to post

Also Mary Read, which is more in the Port Royal wheelhouse (Salt air, ocean mist, aged patchouli, sarsaparilla, watered-down rum, leather-tinged musk, and a spray of gunpowder), and Lyonesse (Golden vanilla and gilded musk, stargazer lily, white sandalwood, grey amber, elemi, orris root, ambergris and sea moss), which is a bit of a stretch but which I think goes with Dee and Port Royal. But so far my top 5: 1. Constellation...the amber and clove are DIVINE 2. Pandemic Vanitas 3. Mallow Flower, Honeysuckle, and Vanilla Bean 4. The Little Owl 5. Snake Oil There are a lot of variants on Snake Oil that might appeal to you- Tombeur from the vampire lineup (Deadly and seductive: vanilla-infused sandalwood, blood musk, antique patchouli, vetiver, lavender, bitter almond, amber, and a trickle of Snake Oil), and from the current Lupers, Womb Furie (Snake Oil and three types of honey) and The Serpent in the Carnations (Snake Oil-soaked carnation petals, spiked with a dash of clove and allspice) seem as though they might agree with you. I'm not sure how much longer it'll be up but Gossip, Slang, and Cuss-Words (Here’s to a kinder, gentler year: lavender and mallow with orris root, angelica, frosted vanilla bean, and osmanthus) seems similar to your ménage à trois scent. The Poinsettia Gown from this year's Yules is very sweet and creamy and you might enjoy it if you can do florals (Rose cream, jasmine cream, mallow, vanilla foam, and sweet amber) and The White Cat from the cat lineup might appeal to you too (A portrait of feline dignity painted in bourbon vanilla cream, mallow flower, golden musk, with eyes of lemon amber). My personal experience with Dee (leather, rosewood and tonka with a hint of incense, parchment and soft woods) was heavy on the tonka though that's not a universal one. Also you should try A Mouse's Long and Sad Tail (Vanilla, two ambers, sweet pea and white sandalwood) and Hellcat (hazelnut, buttercream, honey mead, rum and sweet almond). War from the Good Omens line might appeal to you too (Red ginger, black spices, patchouli, honeysuckle, and three blood-soaked red musks). Lastly if you can do ambergris Zorya Polunochnaya (Pale amber and ambergris, gossamer vanilla, moonflower, and white tobacco petals) is one of the most beautiful vanilla blends on the site, and you might also enjoy The Small Brown Cat (Warm brown fur, cardamom-infused bourbon vanilla, and a touch of cedarwood). However, it's not too dissimilar to Lyonesse (Golden vanilla and gilded musk, stargazer lily, white sandalwood, grey amber, elemi, orris root, ambergris and sea moss) in the general catalogue. If you haven't tried Tomie (A seductive and deceptively delicate blend of rose-tinted white sandalwood, ethereal white amber, voluptuous almond blossom, coeur de jasmin, and a gasp of bourbon vanilla), you absolutely must. The 2019 White Gardenia and Vanilla Cream duet might appeal to you, as might The Bride from 2016 (Vanilla chiffon, honey musk, and pale magnolia) if you can find it. If you like florals, you might go even more floral-y with Victoria from the Stardust collection (Graceful vanilla musk, tea rose, and stargazer lily), which has a really beautiful vanilla musk, and The Torture Queen from the Carnaval Diabolique sees up your alley (White amber, vanilla musk, white tea, ambergris, gardenia, and chrome). Additionally if you haven't tried them, A Mouse's Long and Sad Tale (Vanilla, two ambers, sweet pea and white sandalwood), Good (Shimmering celestial musk with vanilla, white honey, acacia, and sugar cane) and Tamora (Amber, heliotrope, golden sandalwood, peach blossom and vanilla bean) in the GC are just lovely ethereal vanillas. I haven't tried it but I've seen other Zorya P lovers enthuse about The Little Silver Scimitar (Foamy orris and ambergris accord pierced by a sliver of white fir needle, moonflower, and cypress), and I used to adore The Haunted Beach before my skin chemistry changed (Pale, moonlit musk, sea salt, and ambergris), though that's also from 2016. For your darker side, I have fewer suggestions, but The Antikythera Mechanism (Teakwood, oak, black vanilla, and tobacco) seems appropriate, as do Tombeur (Deadly and seductive: vanilla-infused sandalwood, blood musk, antique patchouli, vetiver, lavender, bitter almond, amber, and a trickle of Snake Oil) and The Illustrated Woman (Skin musk, smoky vanilla, pine pitch, patchouli, Indian resins, golden honey, and tobacco). And it's nothing new but Haunted of course (Soft golden amber darkened with a touch of murky black musk) is a classic. 12 hours ago, ShadowEtienne said: I'm intrigued enough to try this. You might also look up Right Atrium from Lupercalia 2019 (Luminous amber and white tea, cherry blossom and cashmere wood). VetchVesper Report post Posted April 6 @ShadowEtienne Late to the party, but I thought I would add to Prince of Cat's excellent recommendations: Cascading Silks, Cock Stamen, Argento Sunrise, L'Agonie, Last Tavern at the Town Gate, and Worm Moon 2021. (Other years might also work; I'm just not sure if they all have the same notes.) The Gilman House Hotel is a great aquatic, if you can find it, and smells to me, how Cthulhu should have smelled if it hadn't gone straight to soap. Stargazing at Sea might also be up your alley. 🙂 Share this post Link to post

The Gilman House Hotel is a great aquatic, if you can find it, and smells to me, how Cthulhu should have smelled if it hadn't gone straight to soap. Stargazing at Sea might also be up your alley. 🙂 Ooh, some interesting ones! Thank you for taking a stab at this, I appreciate the thought that went into it, and it was interesting to look at the descriptions. - Cascading Silks unfortunately has lavender which I am major respiratory levels of distress allergic to - Cock Stamen I will have to see if a friend who's been into BPAL longer than me has around to sniff, I'm dubious of cacao, but everything else sounds amazing - Argento Sunrise, unfortunately has a musk, and I've had very bad luck with anything the lab labels as having musk giving me a nasty skin reaction - L'Agonie unfortunately has a hard no note of vanilla for me (and chamomile which usually makes me sneeze, but I'd still at least sniff something that was chamomile). The overall scent profile sounds up my alley - Last Tavern at the Town Gate, oh no musk again, otherwise sounds interesting, but I've learned not to test my skin that way - Worm Moon 2021 is unfortunately part of how I learned about the musk skin reaction (sampled from a friend), but you're right on the nose in that it smells amazing to me - The Gilman House Hote, ooh I am intrigued! Which of course means it will be impossible to find. I'm very interested in the Miskatonic Valley/Springtime in Arkham/Picnic in Arkham scents in general, and it's a place I'm often willing to try things a little out of my comfort zone. - Stargazing at Sea, if it wasn't for the musk, this sounds right up my alley. I love moonflower. And this is why I maybe should have included my hard no notes, you definitely had the scent profile in the right direction, but my skin and respiratory system are not kind to me. VetchVesper Report post Posted April 7 @ShadowEtienne Alas for your musk allergy! The cocoa in Cock Stamen is only perceptible to me now, after years of aging, and the vanilla in L'Agonie is also very much a background note. Of course, skin chemistry varies. To my nose, both have that succulent juiciness that makes me think of the BEST fruit punch. 🙂 Good hunting and happy sniffing. Share this post Link to post
illuviel Report post Posted May 15 (edited) Showing up really late, but I'd welcome feedback if anyone's interested in giving some feedback. Five favorites, in alphabetical order - Antikythera Mechanism: Teakwood, oak, black vanilla, and tobacco. Oak works really well on me. - Bruised Violet Compound: crushed violets, red currant, patchouli root and spanish moss. I heart this and am interested in more violet-centric scents. Sybaris, The Raven, and The Velvets are on my wishlist. I have and enjoy Mokey but wish I'd been able to get an imp of it and had gotten a full bottle of BVC - Fae: white musk, bergamot, heliotrope, peach and oakmoss. Tied with its bolder sibling, Peach Chypre: red labdanum, oakmoss, 3-year aged patchouli, Italian bergamot, and peach. - Famine: black tea, tobacco leaf, frankincense, lilac, and white musk - Lizardfolk Park Ranger: pine needle, oak bark, sweet birch, stream-polished stones, lichen, dark mosses, nootka, hazelnut, rivulets of amber, and blackcurrant bud. Tied with BVC for current favorite - Peach Chypre: red labdanum, oakmoss, 3-year aged patchouli, Italian bergamot, and peach. Currently wearing Tiefling Therapist: incense of various types works well on me (but the moss blend in The Caterpillar takes over and I can't smell the incense on me for quite some time). Notes that work include violet flower and leaf, musk, tobacco flower and leaf, incense, spices (clove, nutmeg, cardamom), peach, hazelnut, wood (pine, oak, oud, sandalwood, cypress, rosewood), lavender, vanilla, petrichor, resins (dragonsblood, frankincense, myrrh, amber), vanilla, orchid, orris, iris, Things that *don't* work on me and why - The Caterpillar: The moss and/or vetivert turns to mildew and completely overpowers the lovely incense notes -- I'd be interested in more incense like in this one, if combined with other notes that worked (or on its own). Sadly, everything else in the Moss imp pack turns on me in weird ways, too. Why the moss notes in my favorites don't do this &/or why these do, IDK - BPAL's cedar turns to "pencil" on me - coconut: my spouse loathes it - rosemary: I'm allergic to it. Ditto mint. (Which is why Brusque Violet is not on my wishlist, nor a number of the fougeres in the catalog.) - Most commercial "women's" scents turn into laundry soap on me. If I want that, I'll wear Boober, which at least doesn't make me wheeze 😆 (but it does work better as a room scent than a personal one, IMO) - cinnamon: sensitive to it, both skin and respiratorywise - white flowers: gardenia, jasmine, orange blossom can all take over and turn sickly /rotten-sweet on me. Greensleeves Report post Posted May 15 Hi illuviel! I was just checking the notes you like, and I like a fair few of the same ones, namely: tobacco flower and leaf, incense, wood (pine, oak, oud, sandalwood, cypress, rosewood), lavender, resins (dragonsblood, frankincense, myrrh, amber) Sadly I also like a few you can't: like mint and rosemary. How are you with other herbs? Some of the scents I've tried in my top ten will probably not be for you, but the rest might be worth a look. I now have a list of about 30 things I know I would want more of, on top of what I want to try and haven't yet. I think you would really like Gaueko, though. (See notes below.) My top five: Envy (Green herbs slithering through mint, lime and lavender.) Villain (a lavender fougere, with hints of lilac, lime, and citrus musk.) Calliope ( lavender and bright mint with bergamot, verbena, thyme and a touch of sweet orange and warm almond. ) Arcana (Frankincense, rosemary, lavender, neroli, and verbena. ) Gaueko (Blackened sandalwood and misty lavender, with curling wisps of smoky tobacco, nag champa, and labdanum.) For those interested in more stuff I like, feel free to poke around the links in my signature. So what would everybody recommend for me? 👀💚 Share this post Link to post
illuviel Report post Posted May 18 (edited) @Greensleeves We do have a lot of notes in common! and I definitely think I would enjoy Gaueko. Yes, I can do other herbs, but seem to do better with spices, as a class. Based on what you've written in this post and the linked content in your .sig, I think, beyond the ones I already posted from my favorites, that you might enjoy: Famine being on your wish list makes sense. I really enjoy it and think you would too. Ditto Vicomte de Valmont and other fougeres. Have you tried Jareth? It's a lilac-based fougere to compare Villain's lavender base (both are currently on my wishlist -- which I'ven't posted [yet]). Sherlock is "a fastidiously clean scent, with a dash of pipe and cigarette tobacco". You may also enjoy: Boober - laundry and lilac, you say? This is that. freshly-washed laundry, linden blossom, soap suds, and a sprinkle of vanilla Bayou , maybe? - clean and green watery herbal, but does have white flowers that may be a turnoff for you. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Bat - smells nothing like Boober but seems like it belongs in a box with it. Green tea, melon, mint, lime rind, and champagne grape with lemon balm, mullein, and toadflax Tiefling Therapist - I know I wrote about it above, but think it bears mentioning again here for a good nag champa incense note, if you like that kind. Chimera -- cinnamon, myrrh, honeysuckle, & copal Edited May 18 by illuviel duplicated clause deleted Share this post Link to post

If that's the case, I have a sniffy bottle of it and 3 sniffy imps I could PIF to you. PM if you are interested. Thanks for the recommendations, I've noted them down for later. Some of those I've been curious about, like Jareth, for example, but I'm a bit leery of tonka since it hasn't agreed with me. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Bat has always intrigued me, although I'm leery of most non-citrus fruits in my perfumes, though I used to like The Body Shop's strawberry single note. Boober has vanilla, which I generally don't like except in Green Tree Viper, but if there is lilac in it to you I think I want it. I grew up watching Fraggle Rock, so I was a little sad that none of the blends really spoke to me. Boober is my favourite character. So neurotic, so me... Although I'm really a cross between Boober and Mokey. Edited May 18 by Greensleeves Share this post Link to post
illuviel Report post Posted May 19 16 hours ago, Greensleeves said: but if there is lilac in it to you I think I want it. [...] a cross between Boober and Mokey. There's also a lot of lilac in Mokey, but paired with violet, which you noted as an 'enh' note. I'm glad I can parse it as a lighter, sweeter BVC because if Mokey didn't work for me, I'd be an awfully sad Jim Henson fan. I haven't tried any other of the Fraggle Rock scents other than those two. I bought the bottle of Boober for my kid who I called Boober as a babe, but they live in a household with scent aversions and allergies so I kept it until I can pass it on to someone else. As for TTLB: you said, " I'm leery of most non-citrus fruits in my perfumes" -- there is melon in this, but it's blended in with all of the other notes pretty well and doesn't shout "MELON" at one. Jarek Report post Posted November 11 (edited) I am still very new to BPAL, I can put together a list of four that I want in bottles (or have in a bottle) but I will talk about other imps I have as well. Cthulhu - I just bought as my first bottle. (seaweed, oceanic plants and dark, unfathomable waters) Y’ha-nthlei - imp just tried the other day and though it's pretty close to Cthulhu I think I like it enough to get a bottle. (the deepest marine notes with bergamot, eucalyptus and foamy ambergris) Vicomte de Valmont - I have used up this imp finally and I am sad because I really really like it and now I have to wait to get a bottle. xD (ambergris, white musk, white sandalwood, Spanish Moss, orange blossom, three mints, jasmine, rose geranium and a spike of rosemary) The Apothecary - frimp that just arrived with my last order and I tried it today and I am very enamored with it. (Tea leaf with three mosses, green grass, a medley of herbal notes, and a drop of ginger and fig) Imps I like but not quite enough to get a full bottle (though I might change my mind): Ranger, Cairo, Scales of Deprivation, Famine (this is discontinued anyways), Whitechapel, The Black Rider, Dee, The Antikythera Mechanism, Iago, Fighter, R'Lyeh (I thought I'd really like this one, and it's very nice, but not as good as Cthulhu to me). Imps I have that I am less of a fan of but have still been wearing: Czernobog, Imp, Oberon, Sherlock Holmes, Mad Hatter, Scherezade, Bloodlust, Snake Oil (I really wanted to like this one, and it's kind of growing on me, but I don't know.) I have a few more imps that I bought & received to try out, and I have been going through some rec lists here for things & looking at stuff on the site that has notes I might like or want to try, and I've amassed a private wishlist of well over 100 scents in stock currently to try out . xD But I'm very interested in further suggestions, especially from LEs or discontinued or out of stock or whatever that I might look to obtain from BPAL collectors. :3 Edited November 11 by Jarek Share this post Link to post

(the deepest marine notes with bergamot, eucalyptus and foamy ambergris) Cthulhu is one of my absolutely beloved scents, I have it both as perfume oil and as beard oil (and if they ever made it as hair gloss, I would absolutely get that too). If I had to pick just one scent to stick with, it would be one of the ones I would seriously consider. I like Y'ha-nthlei as well, and agree with you that the two scents are very much cousins. Picnic in Arkham, and the original Springtime in Arkham from which they were derived have been really amazing on the scents list for me! Some other Picnic/Springtime in Arkham scents that you might want to check out if you haven't already: - If white florals are potentially of interest, available as imps in current Picnic in Arkham, Night-Gaunt might be worth a try. It's a different profile than these two, but it's got some of the same interesting biting elements, and I can see how they are a cohesive part of the same scent family. (something akin to yuzu, white grapefruit, and kumquat mixed with the snow-dusted flowers of Mount Ngranek) - Also current in Picnic in Arkham, Nyarlathotep smells like a storm brewing to me, and has some elements that resonate with Cthulhu and Y'ha-nthlei. (This is the blackest of ritual incenses charged with flashes of ozone) - Discontinued Picnic in Arkham (so a little harder to get but maybe not as much as ones that were never released in Picnic in Arkham form), The Deep Ones. This is very much the cousin of Cthulhu, Y'ha-nthlei, and R'Lyeh (which I saw that you tried), but it has a profile of it's own that is fascinating. (Black algae, drooping seaweed, salty brine, and crushed coral) - Going further back to Springtime in Arkham only scents, if you can find any Kingsport is also a fascinating member of that family of aquatics. (Salty ocean breezes touched by a numinous, incandescent mist) - Also from Springtime in Arkham, and one of the ones with some fascinatingly but appealing disconcerting notes for me, is Yog-Sothoth. It's definitely worth checking out the descriptions for that one in the reviews thread! (The perfume of eternity in vast, unknowable space. A glittering oil, ephemeral, iridescent, and horrifying in its immeasurable emptiness. This is the scent of air and darkness) As far as other GCs that you could easily get as imps, if you're good with ozonic notes, Lightning is probably worth checking out. (Lightning slashing the midnight skies over the endless reaches of the ocean. The electric tang of ozone, marine notes, and a drop of sharp rain) In the realm of long out of stock and discontinued GCs that might appeal: - In Wanderlust, Kumari Kandam (The hollow scent of a vast antediluvian civilization, now frozen and buried, smothered by a thick sheet of ice and trapped deep beneath the ocean. Thick incense, clay, stone, and hothouse blooms with a spike of frost, a hint of decay, and heavy, dolorous aquatic notes) - In Wanderlust, Windward Passage (Breezes blowing off of the waters of the Caribbean: marine accord, seaweed, and bladderwrack) In the realm of LEs that might appeal: - Talvikuu to me is Cthulhu in the winter woods (Skeletal limbs of birch and fir coated in a thick, impenetrable blanket of snow. This is the death of the year personified) - Halloween San Francisco is incredible at capturing the exact time and place that it describes, and really fits in with the Cthulhu cluster of scents for me while being entirely its own thing and very melancholic in some ways (Salt air wafting in from the bay. Rain falling on rain-soaked leaves) I hope that some of those are interesting to seek out! Share this post Link to post
