lady_pandora Report post Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) True love renewed by night in an English garden: moonflower, Nottingham catchfly, Casablanca lily, evening primrose, night-blooming cereus, Queen of the Night, muted by the sepia tones of tonka, tobacco absolute, bourbon vanilla, and costus. I get what I think is almost 100% moonflower from this, which makes it distinct from the other moonflower blends I have where it lets something else share the stage. Cool, ethereal, and very pretty, without much morphing. Edited June 5, 2018 by lady_pandora
Casablanca Report post Posted June 8, 2018 I don't know every floral note listed for 1868, but it's mostly moonflower and lily on me, with a breath of vanilla. It feels like an ethereal and vintage floral blend. Unfortunately, it was turning soapy on me soon after application, as some lilies do. Even though I feel like "Casablanca lily" should work on me. I thought it would be nice to try to fix it instead of rehoming it. So I tried it layered with Antique Lace on my arm, and they were pretty together. I used about a fifth of the 1868 bottle and added that amount of Antique Lace to it. This worked well -- no more soap, and the vintage vanilla feel of the blend is more than it was. Now the blend reminds me of a floral vintage wedding, even more than it initially did.
donkehpoo Report post Posted June 21, 2018 Wet: Very white, clean-smelling florals. Similar to other reviews; I'm not getting any tobacco, bourbon vanilla, or tonka. Dry: Count me in as another person with still no tobacco, bourbon vanilla, or tonka appearing on the skin. I was hoping those notes would ground the floral notes, but no such luck. Still all flowers, all the time; almost identical to the wet version, which is rare! I was hoping the moonflower would be more prominent (my favorite floral note!), but I can't seem to pick it out either. However, if you're a floral lover, I don't think you'd be disappointed by this! Just not a scent for me.
Lucchesa Report post Posted September 3, 2018 2018 version I can absolutely appreciate the beauty of June 23, 1868. It is a bouquet of beautiful, heady-but-not-cloying white florals, most of which I'm unfamiliar with, but it smells the way I imagine moonflower would. Lovely and ethereal. Unfortunately, I was hoping for those sepia tones of tonka, tobacco and bourbon vanilla to come dirty things up, and while I may get a touch of vanilla, I really get no tobacco at all. So it's a gorgeous floral, but I almost never wear a pure floral; it's just not me. This would be a fantastic scent for a bride in traditional long white dress and veil. If the lab ever made the reverse scent, tonka-tobacco-bourbon vanilla with a hint of moonflower, I'd be quite excited. I'm delighted I got to try this one, and if white florals ring your bells, don't miss this.
windbourne Report post Posted May 25, 2021 This scent, on my skin is a mess of flower hash. =_=; It's not surprising, I don't get on at all well with most of these big white floral fragrances. I have a moonflower SN from another company, and a similar note is very much present. I can tell the warmer notes are under there -- the slightly sweaty costus (and a need to give it a full chance) is about the only thing keeping me from just washing it off because that note is like catnip for me -- but mostly this is about pungent white florals. The hilarious thing about this perfume to me is that it encapsulates an experience I would love. Being in gardens full of night-blooming flowers is a wonderful experience and I treasure many of these notes as actual flowers. I just don't love those scents on my skin. Late, late drydown, I do get a hint of tobacco, and the whole experience is probably sweeter because of the tonka and vanilla notes, but overall, very fragrant white floral. Big throw, but I can't comment on weartime because I washed it off. ^^;
skyturtles Report post Posted August 4, 2021 As my second OLLA purchase (Blood Popsicle being my first), I thought I'd give florals a try, especially since it's summertime, and well, "June." Well, I tried. I've ended up gifting this to my sister-in-law whose birthday just so happens to be June 23rd. I've learned a valuable lesson, I believe... florals are maybe just not for me. I dunno what "moonflower" is in particular, but it smells like a white bloom. I like ~looking~ at flowers, don't get me wrong... I just don't especially want to smell like one. QueenProserpina Report post Posted January 19 (edited) Glad to have my thirteenth BPAL fragrance! An extremely elegant floral, dominated by an almost sharp lily that is slightly reminiscent of jasmine and gardenia, or even daffodil; the light pungency of spring flowers. Elderly lady church perfume in a good way. I’m getting the impression of other florals in a general chorus, and a small amount of vanilla and/or tonka, but fresh out of the mail, it is mostly a clean and elegant lily. Lasts all day! Update on January 26 with further considerations on February 2: the lily has softened considerably, making the overall fragrance much more balanced among a lovely chorus of sweet, almost dryer-sheet adjacent florals, although it still lends an almost citrusy freshness. As before, the florals stick to fabric and the softer notes of vanilla/tonka stick to my skin. Purchased in January of 2024.
